Week Five Morning Aftermath

Well, now that the thing has been pimped on national television by Bob Costas at the end of NBC’s Sunday Night Football, it looks like we have to keep doing it.

Then again, if we didn’t do it today, only the handful of die hards who were still watching the coverage of the Colts’ 31-9 dismembering of the Titans would realize that something was amiss.

Still, we like this new feature.  We think.

The bigger question is whether you like it — or more accurately whether you don’t.  And since few of you have demonstrated a reluctance to speak your mind when it comes to articulating complaints, we figure you’ll let us know.

Here’s how this works.  We’ll use this page as the launching point for specific takes and quotes and other stuff from every Sunday game, with the contests ranked from best to worst pursuant to our complex and detailed formula based on the same premise as pulling folded squares of paper out of a hat.

So here we go.  Keep checking back until all 13 games are posted.

Bengals 17, Ravens 14:  It was a close call for the top spot on the day, but the circumstances surrounding the Bengals’ successful trip to Baltimore and the stunning outcome justify the top spot for Week Five.

Broncos 20, Patriots 17 (OT):  In this year’s best servant-master return game, Josh McDaniels turned Bill Belichick’s face to alabaster, which was hard to notice with Belichick wearing Costanza’s Gore-tex jacket and McKenzie Brothers tuque.  But the compelling outcome was fueled by the one NFL rule that needs to be changed more than any other.

Cardinals 28, Texans 21:  The defending NFC champs flirted with a blowout, and then flirted with falling to 0-3 at home after the offense-heavy Houston team finally discovered its defense.

Cowboys 26, Chiefs 20 (OT):  The Cowboys limp into their bye after finding a way not too lose, thanks to an unwillingness by the Chiefs to try to win — and an unlikely wideout who came up bigger than T.O. ever did.

Panthers 20, Redskins 17:  After the ‘Skins blew a 15-point lead, the real questions are when Daniel Snyder will fire his head coach . . . and whether Jerry Richardson will.

Falcons 45, 49ers 10:  Atlanta needed this one more than the Niners, and now the San Fran players individually need a swift kick in the ass after the collective one they absorbed on Sunday.  We hope coach Mike Singletary saves the steel-toed boot for Dre’ Bly.

Vikings 38, Rams 10Brett Favre is talking big about his latest new team, but maybe he should be concerned about a defense that is suddenly porous, and a tailback who suddenly isn’t Jim Brown reincarnated.  (If Jim Brown were, you know, not living.)

Colts 31, Titans 9:  When does flex scheduling start again?  What appeared to be an epic showdown a month ago was an on-paper stinker, and even though some predicted a correction from Tennessee, it was another systematic dissection from the greatest NFL player of all time.

Steelers 28, Lions 20:  Though it’s ordinarily impossible for both teams to be happy after an NFL game, the Steelers got the “W” and the Lions feel like they’re on the right track after losing by only eight.

Seahawks 41, Jaguars 0:  In other weeks, this one could be last on the list.  But with the rest of the games involving some of the worst teams we’ve seen in recent years, Seattle’s convincing win stands out for what it might tell us about the team’s overall prospects, especially if it can get and stay fully healthy.

Eagles 33, Buccaneers 14:  As we move toward the bottom of the barrel for Week Five, let’s look at how the coming-out party of a first-round rookie wideout conjures memories of a similar experience the Bucs endured more than a decade ago.

Giants 44, Raiders 7:  After playing the Chargers close and beating the Chiefs, the Raiders were regarded as a team with potential.  Since then?  Not.  They were picked apart by the Giants, and the slide somehow continues.

Browns 6, Bills 3:  The saddest part about this battle of two bottom-feeders is that it was the worst pro football game of the weekend, even when factoring in the two UFL debut contests.

That’s all for this week.  If you haven’t clicked the links to read each entry, what the hell’s wrong with you?

That hit Ray-Ray put on Ochocinco was as dirty a play as you will ever see and I will be pissed if he isn’t fined for it.
The Ratbirds showed their true colors yesterday-a young, albeit improving, offense and an old, cheap shotting defense led by the biggest thug of them all, Ray Lewis.
Props to the Bengals for putting them in their place.

The Bengals are for real – at least in the clutch. I have never seen anything like Carson Palmer. He is not this “threat-to-score-on-every-play” type of QB, but he delivers like noone else in the 4th quarter.
And their defence! That pair of USC linebackers are montrous – Rey might be the next Ray. Hope they can keep up the good work!

Did anyone else notice the ever classy Bill Bellicheck run off the field and not congratulate McDaniels after the game? Same with Tom Brady. Why does the media not point out the manner in which the Patriots behave?

If you think about it, the Patriots are just a couple of plays from being 1-4. Buffalo and Baltimore should have beaten them, if it weren’t for a couple of bonehead plays. The Patriots definitely don’t have the huge margin for error that they used to.
As for the Broncos, they play the Chargers next week. If the Chargers lose, IMO, they are done for the year. Rivera needs to get that defense to play better. I don’t understand why he has the Charger defense playing so soft. I thought once the Chargers dumped Cottrell, that the Charger defense would all of a sudden improve under Rivera. For whatever reason, that hasn’t happened. Norv isn’t to blame for that.
I am also a bit surprised that the Chargers didn’t make trade during their bye week for some d-line help. In particular, they need a nose tackle to replace the injured J-Wall.

Ray Lewis is a thug and will always be a thug….nfl needs to fine him. Baltimore is a good team, but the Bengals played inspired. Prayers out to Coach Zim’s family. Who-dey!

    ChapNasty,
As a Steelers fan, few people hate Belicheat more than myself, but he clearly was looking for McDaniels and spent a decent amount of time out there looking for him. A huge effort for a man that hates to be on the field after a losing effort. That being said, great job by the young coach. Loved it!!!!!

  13. Kyle Orton's Beard says: Oct 12, 2009 9:09 AM

Chapnasty, did you happen to watch the game? The entire game? Did you happen to see Bellicheck searching for McDaniels for several minutes after the game? The announcers sure did, because they pointed it out several times. Bellicheck actually turned around and walked backwards to look for him as he was leaving the field.

I am no fan of either of these two teams, but have to admit, I do love seeing the Ravens “D” lose! Still pissed they stole our team in the 90′s and if the Browns are gonna suck., which they quite obviously do, I would rather have Cinci win the division than Baltimore or Pittsburgh.

Bigger question is like it or not like it? What are we talking about? What is a specific take? Pursuant. Pursuant? Premise. Squares of a paper. It is true that even us stupid people choose to get drunk now and then, but when you see an attorney on a binge it is scary. Then again, I’m sure this makes sense to smart people.

Yeah it was pretty obvious that Bellicheck was looking for McDaniels but McDaniels was too busy doing an end zone celebration for the fans. Who’s lacking class now? He should have shook hands with Bellicheck before he started his shananagans. But of course, Bellicheck is the one being blasted as always. Before long McDaniels will be wearing an “H.O.F. 20??” jacket on the sidelines.

  19. chapnasty says: Oct 12, 2009 9:26 AM

I dont know what games any of you were watching, Bellicheck ran off the field so did Brady. Coaches meet at the 50 at the end of the game. If Bellicheck was at all classy he would have done it. Instead he waited until no one was watching.

Are you really that clueless that you didn’t see BB stop running looking all over the field for McDaniels, which the commentators pointed out repeatedly that he couldn’t find him ? McDaniels shook hands or hugged every single Pats coach and many of the players, before looking for Belichick and then ran around the stadium giving the Donks fans waves and fist pumps.
I keep telling you retards, you want to hate the Pats that’s fine, just actually use your brains.

  21. Mike says: Oct 12, 2009 9:34 AM

To all the Patriot and Belichick haters out there. The 2 coaches met before the game on the field, agreed to not shake each other hands at the end of the game. And Belichick actually went into the Broncos dressing room after the game, and congratulated McDaniels in his office.

The Non-Handshake – It’s in the Denver Post that Bellicheck and McDaniels met before the game and decided not to shake after the game on the field to avoid the publicity that would come with it. They didn’t say whose idea that was, but I’m guessing it was Bellichecks. They did meet after the game as well, in a coaches office somewhere in the stadium. They didn’t say anything about Brady.

    2. Bubba Caldwell and Carson are something else in the fourth quarter, how do you let the guy loose over the middle of the field in that situation if you’re the Ravens?
    3. Bengals D is no joke, can’t wait to play the rest of the schedule, not seeing anybody scary anymore, maybe Minnesota, maybe the Jets for the last game.

  25. east96street says: Oct 12, 2009 9:37 AM

chapnasty – I’m no NE fan, but unlike the Super Bowl, Belichick tried to do the right thing here. NFL Network and ESPN all showed footage of him coming onto to the field and actively looking for McDaniels. It was McDaniels who was missing because he was on the sidelines pumping his fist over and over and yelling, “Yeah!” over and over. It appears it was nothing more than a rookie coach getting so pumped up over the win that he just forgot to go to midfield. If you’re going to rip anyone it should be McDaniels, although by all appearances it was just a harmless mistake.

Hey retard, by “run off the field,” you must mean “wandered around searching for McDaniels for a good five minutes before giving up and going to the locker room.” If McDaniels had managed to go find Belichek instead of doing his Rod Tidwell dance routine, then they would have shaken hands. If either of the two acted inappropriately, it certainly was not Belichek.

Way to work in a digg on T.O.. Yeah, T.O. has never came up big. You know, unless you consider “The Catch”, or coming back from a broken leg to play in the superbowl, or the 147 touchdowns he’s scored in his career.

Thank god you aren’t a member of the media.

PLEASE please Please!!! Don’t do what I think you’re going to do…
Look, as a Bronco fan, it was amazing to see the team beat a very tough Patriots team. I thought for sure that after weeks of questioning how good they are that this would finally earn some respect for the team and we could leave it there. The last few weeks Denver’s opponents had their excuses made for them: It was a miracle tip, the opponent was such a terrible team, the other team was much worse than we had thought… and now you guys probably feel compeled to suggest that the Broncos only won because they won the coin flip and got to score first, and sudden death didn’t give the Pats a chance to respond. The rules held the Pats down, not the Broncos…. geez. What does a team have to do?

The next two weeks will be the telling tale for the Vikings. Personally, I think the Ravens will be a tougher team to beat than the Steelers, as opinions go, I’m entitled to mine.
The Ravens are coming off a HUGE loss to Cinci and I think the Steelers are going to be overconfident.

That porous Vikings defense gave up 10 points!
Up 14 in the 1st quarter and never really threatened after that. This game was virtually over early in the 3rd quarter. Yet you expect them to keep the hammer down all 4 quarters?
4 turnovers……What more do you want Florio?
    They won by 4 touchdowns!!
They didn’t need Peterson to be Jim Brown, hell he only carried 15 times! It was actually smart to lighten his load, save him for games that matter.

I love it. This story isn’t even fully about the Patsies and yet it is just overidden by their fans. I know a lot of it has to do with Chapnasty’s comment, and as far as that goes I didn’t see the end of the game, so I don’t know what really happened, but you Patsy fans get so defensive so easily.
And the one thing Chapnasty said that is correct is that nobody mentioned Tom Brady walking off the field without shaking hands (if that’s in fact what he did, because as i said, i didn’t see it.)
I do agree with what someone else said though. The dynasty is over.

  45. copes cabana says: Oct 12, 2009 11:21 AM

Living in Columbus I love that the Bungirls are doing well. Because now I actually have Cincy fans to say “talk to me when you win the division, or are the last AFC North team in the playoffs” to. Normally that is hard to do because you never see Cincy fans anywhere unless they are winning (which is rare). Steelers fans, oh yeah I see black and gold everyday. Browns fans, I don’t know a day has gone by without that little elf making an appearance in the OSU hosptials. Bengals fans, the past two weeks I’ve seen more of them than in the past three years. So I say to all of you that just pulled your Palmer jersey out of the mothballs and taped OchoCinco over the back of that old Johnson jersey, come talk to me when you win a playoff game.
(they do look good though, and was happy to see them win for the D coach.) They will not beat the Steelers or Ravens twice this year and will not see a playoff win.

I did watch the game and admitted that I was wrong in my claim about Bellicrap but that comment isnt showing as of the time I am writing this. However, Brady did not in any way shape or form look for, or approach McDaniels after the game. And if he did then he did it in private as well. But something tells me that he didn’t. The man who can have his bodyguards shoot at people and get away with it is apparently proving that yet again he is untouchable.

Last year he had 452yds. and 3 tds. in first 5 games. Seemed to me he was the NFL rushing leader last year wasn’t he? Ahead of pace. He’s getting 4.9 a carry but we don’t have to make him hump it 30 times. We’ll pull that card out when we need to. All well in MN.

Actually as a Packer fan, I don’t disagree. The Vikings played the Packers with a O-line that was in complete disarray due to Clifton’s injury and everyone playing out of position and lining up a safety that’s been on the team for only 4 weeks. I’m more surprised that they only won by 7 points, especially at home.

What ever happened to playing football? These QB’s today are pussys. The biggest pussys of them all are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady asking, and getting, aflag anytime a defender gets near them! They should put an astereck next to Manning and Bradys stats because they dont play football. They have an invisible red shirt on evidently. Nobody should put these 2 QB’s in the top 10 of all time! They dont play football they play dress up with forrtball uniforms! Pussy’s! Bradshaw,Young.Montana,Stabauch,Marino,Tarkinton, these guys played football. The NFL,Tom Brady,And Peyton Manning have ruined the defensive game of football all for $. NFL dont forget people like me pay big $ to see the QB take a hit and not go to their “daddy” a.k.a. the official crying for a flag cause a big mean defender hit the poor wittle babies. You have a $100 contract Peyton BE A MAN!

Since when does Brady have to make a handshake after a game. Players go off the field all the time without shaking hands especially in a game that ends in a walk off. Why isn’t anyone getting on Jabar Gaffney for not shaking hands with anyone on the Patriots? Seriously who cares about stupid after the game hand shakes?? They mean nothing.

  54. chapnasty says: Oct 12, 2009 11:59 AM

Your premise is on point but Manning and Brady were pretty successful before the rules got as bad as they are. But that being said, no one tries to take advantage of if more than those 2. And no one does it more than Brady. I would never wish ill will on any human but if he missed the rest of his career with an injury that wasnt life threatening or something I wouldn’t care at all.

Brady is a spoiled, selfish, little prick and a cry baby when things don’t go his way. He’s proven that time and time again by failing to congratulate a team that just beat his ass.
I’m not one to take up for Bill the Cheater, but he did look as if he was trying to find Mcdaniels after the game, but Mcdaniles was too busy doing cheerleading stunts up and down the sideline to meet in the middle of the field.
Sure he should be happy, should celebrate, but god damn Josh, act like you have been there before and don’t be so over the top.

Its not so much of it being a big deal but more of it showing leadership and class. Brady was playing against a former coach and should have had some sort of a relationship built up with him and should have been happy for him. There is a reason why young kids shake hands at the end of their sporting events. It teaches respect for your opponent, class and sportsmanship. Unfortunately the NFL lacks those things right now because of people like Tom Brady.
And to compare Jabar Gaffney to Tom Brady is nonsense. Gaffney was their #4 WR.

hockref says: “Don’t want your chances of winning to hinge on a coin toss ? THEN WIN THE DAMN GAME IN REGULATION OR YOU TAKE YOUR CHANCES.”
    @everyone else … Didn’t see the Pats/Broncos game so I’m curious:
If (as some have posted) Bellichick made a deal w/Daniels before the game to skip the on-field handshake and meet in the office, then why was he making such a big thing of looking for Daniels on the field? If Daniels thought they were meeting in the office, he wouldn’t have planned to go to the center of the field to look for Bellichick so instead he celebrated with the fans. The two stories don’t mesh.

The problem with the late hits on QB’s isn’t the fact that Brady/Manning get calls. It’s the fact that the other QB’s in the league aren’t getting the same calls. (Jarmarcus Russell was hit pretty bad two weeks ago against the Texans and no call)
Look, the NFL is a man’s league. You have to take a hit in any position. But the NFL has an obligation to protect all of their players, regardless of their position. This includes all unnecessary hits that may cause injury (see Warren Sapp lay out the Packer offensive lineman about 8 years ago, Hines Ward blowing up Keith River last year, or Ray Lewis taking out Ochocinco). There needs to be an increase in the consistent protection of all players in the league from injuries that are from late or illegal hits. If a player hits the QB in the head or below the knees after the play, then the player must be flagged.
Imagine your team’s QB makes a throw then a second later is hit in the knee, tearing his MCL/ACL/PCL. That franchise is now without their starting QB for at minimum a year, and that is ignoring at least a month of regular season that the QB plays hesitant with the injury. Fines for late hits only work as an after-the-fact measure. If you punish the event on the field; not only does the player immediately see their mistake but that mistake is felt throughout the team (loss of yardage, coach aware, benefit for the team that had it happen to). Look at Flozell Adams, in three straight games this season he tripped D-linemen, one of which injured Justin Tuck. First time he was fined, second time he was fined, third time fined with the threat of a suspension. Fines don’t work against players who commit acts on the field, a fine of $5,000 is nothing more than a token gesture.
While the body of work from historic players who took these hits may be impressive, keep in mind that years ago, players were not as athletically gifted nor did we have the quality of medical research to correlate the injuries to future health issues.
If you want to watch quality football, watch the NFL. If you want to watch football that with unnecessary hitting, go find tapes of the XFL.

Granted, the O line was pretty beat up, but if that and claiming bad calls by the ref’s are the only excuses you can come up with, its gonna be a long year!

    2. No, I do not think that the Steelers will be overconfident.
Have you read any articles on the Steelers.
The Offense is not happy with the way they played yesterday agaisnt the Lions. Yes they scored 28 points but they know they could have scored more and should have scored more. They admit that they struggled in the second half and I know they will get that adjusted. Any Steeler fan knows that they are good at making adjustments and I so not see AP running like a demon as he has of late against weaker teams, and you left another component out of the equation, Troy will be back against the Vikings, and I dont forsee Farve getting all of them passes off with him in the backfield. You remember Troy, every quarterback nightmare, I am not saying that the Steelers will win , I just dont think it will be as easy for the Vikings as their past 5 games..

On to your next post … I’ve also been frustrated by the inconsistency of roughing calls. That’s why it was good to see Ed Hochuli call roughing against Detroit yesterday. Ben doesn’t usually get those calls. Good call? Well–it is supposed to be a contact sport. But if you’re going to call it for Brady, you need to call it for everyone.
On the other hand … people may not like the block Ward put on Rivers, but when he did it, it wasn’t illegal, so the refs couldn’t flag it. (Some) defenses whine about Ward because they don’t like a receiver who hits back. They scream and make “we are men” speeches about refs interfering with THEIR game but they whine about getting hit by a hard-blocking receiver. Please.

All teams will scream for any calls that go for their team but then grit their teeth at calls that go against their team. Just the nature of being a fan.
I’m not saying that what Ward did was illegal at the time; I’m saying the NFL is taking a more serious approach to player safety and the quality of product put on the field on a day-in day-out basis. The increase of calls aimed at protecting players also falls in line with the approved league changes for the year including the “Hines Ward rule” the Onside Kick formation, the prevention of the wedge for kicks (underrated dangerous formation that saw it’s share of major injuries last year), and any hits with the helmet, forearm or shoulder to a players head. This also goes along with the ban of the horse-collar tackle a few years ago.
The calls for player safety must go both ways. Defensive players must have the protection from injuries too as well as offensive players, including chop blocks, tripping and illegal blind-side hits.
All of these calls are aimed at keeping a high quality product on the field and diminishing major injuries from crippling a players life beyond football. The NFL is a better league when their star players are healthy; and like any business they must take a strong motion towards protecting their future potential.

I wasn’t questioning the validity of your argument, only the inclusion of Ward in that paragraph because his hit wasn’t illegal at the time. Of course it is now, so the point is moot. I can’t disagree with anything you’ve said, and in particular, think someone needs to tie Flozell’s shoelaces together. But I love defensive football. Yes, I want clean hits and for all the players to walk off the field on their own power. But I don’t want them to be afraid to hit or block their opponents. Too many flags destroy the rhythm of the game. The NFL has to find a balance.
