Cowboys snag Allen Rossum

How bad are things in Dallas?  Sufficiently bad that they’re picking over the 49ers’ trash heap.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News), Rossum has agreed to terms with the Cowboys, and he will sign a contract on Wednesday.

Rossum, who was cut by the 49ers when they lifted the roster exemption from rookie receiver Michael Crabtree, is expected to handle punt and kick returns for the Cowboys.

As Archer points out, receiver Patrick Crayton fumbled a punt on Sunday against the Chiefs, and cornerback Terence Newman misplayed another punt, which was downed inside the five.

As to the kick-return function, running back Felix Jones has been injured, and receiver Miles Austin will be getting an expanded role in the offense.

Rossum spent three seasons in Atlanta under Cowboys special teams coach Joe DeCamillis.

Because ya know, getting a special teamer shows things are just so bad.
You’re starting to sound like Ed Werder, Florio.

You know you are having a terrible year when he gets replaced by a TE on kickoffs.
Maybe the Cowboys can get something from him. It should be pretty telling that the 49ers, who desperately need a quality returner, thought they were better off without him.

  6. ipeefreely says: Oct 13, 2009 8:01 PM

Erm.. A. Rossum is an established veteran return man. Every team can use a guy like this, especially over Crayton. Felix and Miles need to focus on their respective roles in the offense without the potential to get hurt on special teams.

There is gonna be some upheaval in Small D by season’s end!

You’d think that it would be pretty telling that they haven’t had a winning season since 2002 even though they have the luxury of playing in one of the worst divisions in the NFL over that time along with the Seahawks, Rams and Cardinals. Probably because they whiff on so many draft picks, especially first round picks. And free agents. Yup, great talent evaluaters over there in Pelosiland.

Funny how Eagles fans always have something to say. How many Superbowl rings do the Eagles have? 0, None, Zilch. At least Dallas has glory years DVD’s. All Eagles fans have is a movie about a bum special teams guy. The talent on the team was so bad they had street tryouts and a bump beat out pro’s. Beside Rocky Balboa having a statue. What does Philly have?

  15. cowboys1 says: Oct 13, 2009 9:07 PM

Things must be very slow in NFL news land to try to make a big deal about some team churning the bottom of their roster. Clear sign of impending disaster.
I guess the fact that Dallas hasn’t won a game this season is what merits this ridicule, oh wait, they’re 3-2 with the only loses being close (2 pts to the Giants 5-0) to two teams that haven’t lost a game – and they have the #1 offense in the NFL, yeah, things are really bad in Dallas.
this has to tie ofr at least the most lame post you’ve ever made here.

Crayton needed to be replaced. What did you Mensa candidates think was better option? Put Felix at more risk to get hurt? Leave Crayton in the game? Newman, please. At least the Cowboys are finally showing displeasure with a player and not preparing an excuse for the poor play. Too much sunshine pumping and not enough accountability. Good move. If the players start worrying that they will lose their jobs when they eff up then maybe they will perform better.

  25. Boyzfan94 says: Oct 13, 2009 9:50 PM

You dummies need to do some research…Rossum was cut by San Fran because they needed to make a roster spot for Crabtree or he would still be on the roster….Crayton stinks as a PR and Dallas wants to keep starters Newman and Felix Jones healthy. Rossum has plenty in the tank and should help with our return game..

  26. jrd8523 says: Oct 13, 2009 10:09 PM

You should do some research yourself. Rossum was a healthy scratch before Crabtree was even signed. Singletary was not happy with his returns. He “might” have something left in the tank. He definitely doesnt have “plenty”.
Cowboy1s, you are the idiot. Rossum hasn’t played DB since he has been in SF. He returns kicks, he returns punts. He hardly has played a snap on defense. The fact that you have no idea what you are talking about and call someone an idiot is scary.

What kind of idiotic question is that? It’s right up there with “when did you stop beating your sife?” /sarcasm on Why yes, of course I’m comfortable with that. Who wouldn’t be? /sarcasm off
I am however comfortable with the fact that when KC had the ball 1st &10 from the 50 in OT that the D you seem to think sucks so much allowed KC to gain exactly 1 yard. I am comfortable with the fact that the team came together at the end of that game, that the team was able to overcome all the mistakes, bad calls, stupid breaks to win a game under extreme pressure. I’m comfortable with that.
Dallas has issues right now no doubt, but, if they get their s*it together during the bye, you and every other team in the NFL had best watch out. If they don’t, then they’re looking at 9-7 again. We’ll just have to see.

“but at least I can spell.” – Wow, I left off the i. You were still able to understand what I was talking about, right? I know that can be hard for you. I’m talking about you totally misunderstanding something simple and you are talking about a mispelled word. Talk about someone who is looking to focus on any little trivial thing he can. “But can you honestly say you’re comfortable with the fact that KC marched down the field with just over 2 minutes left to tie the game?”
Why should it make anybody uncomfortable? Consider the circumstances. The D had been on the field for like 8 minutes on that drive that ended with the Ratliff FG block, then the offense came in and scored in three plays, roughly 50 seconds and the D was back out there. They made some plays against a gassed prevent D, happens all the time. I know that relatively speaking, the Chefs suck but this is still the NFL and there’s not a whole lot of difference between the best teams and the worst teams. I’d love to think that the Cowboys can score that quickly all the time because I’d risk a gassed D for that, but I just don’t see it happening all the time or even a lot. They went out in OT and shut the Chefs down twice and they deserve credit for that.

Someone explain to Dallas Cowboy fan that FOOTBALL in NORTH AMERICA has been going on much longer than the last 43 years!! Philly has won 3 championships!
Here are some BRILLIANT Dallas Cowboy fan observations:
    Vox says:
“Well gosh, isn’t it obvious? The 49ers blow at evaluating talent. Why is this news to you?”
LOL, and Dallas is good at evaluating talent??
    Vox says:

OR tow the line with Wade…good luck with that!
    Vox says:
“Yes, I am. Would you like to compare the two teams’ draft records? I’ll even let you go first. ”
Why pick on the Niners…how about you compare draft picks with Philly…yeah that’s what I thought!! Philly has probably released more Pro-Bowlers than you’ve drafted in the last 10 years!

“Why pick on the Niners…how about you compare draft picks with Philly”
Sure. How are Jerome McDougle, Broderick Bunkley, Mike Patterson, Freddie Mitchell, Shawn Andrews and Corey Simon working out for you guys? We all know that you guys thing that Lito Sheppard sucks. That’s seven of the Eagirls last eight first round draft picks. The only second day pick I can see that has amounted to anything since 2000 is Trent Cole. I’d add Celek but he’s never caught more than 27 passes and 2 TDs in a season. Martellus Bennet did better than that last season as a second stringer playing behind the guy that the Eagirls passed up to take LJ Smith… Jason Witten (3rd round pick, by the way).
I’ll counter with Jay Ratliff, Tashard Choice, Patrick Crayton, and Bradie James as Cowboys second day picks since 2000, but I could have stopped at Jay Ratliff. Demarcus Ware, Felix Jones, Terence Newman in the first round.
    Your turn.

  64. jrd8523 says: Oct 14, 2009 4:18 PM

Last year is last year, especially when you are approaching your mid 30’s. That avg has dropped 5+ yards and he has started to show a serious reluctance to take contact and run upfield (enough to get him benched).
But he can field a punt clean, which is better then what the Cowboys have now. I dont really get Cowboys fans. You point out something obvious like how Rossum has really been a dissapointment this year and is running out of gas (which is expected given his age) and you get posters getting super defensive just because the Cowboys signed him. Relax.

    VoxVeritas:
Cowboys Talent Evaluation? How many draft picks for Roy Williams? Your first and second round picks from ’09 are playing great . . . oh thats right . . .you did not have any. Other Cowboys highlights:
    – You tampered with Crabtree
    – Only pro bowler in the last 4 drafts . . . a kicker
    – The obvious one . . . how many play-off wins in the last 12 years?
    – Besides ’02,’03, and ’05 . . .your drafts suck.

That’s so stupid, right? I mean, it’s not like we’re bragging about the VERY RECENT year of 1996!

Seriously – every time Vox makes a comment on this site, refer PFT to his Myspace Page.
Every time I’ve done it, he’s done for the thread. No more Vox comments. Doesn’t say a single word. Probably goes off to cry in his pillow and rub one out, imagining that one day he’ll find a woman who will both sleep with him and play Magic: The Gathering afterwards.
