The New York Jets went to Miami on Monday night and played a 1-3 Dolphins team that is better than its record indicates.
The exciting, back-and-forth, 31-27 affair resulted in the home team doing what it couldn’t do in Week Two against the Colts on Monday night — driving down the field with the game on the line and getting a touchdown for the win.
Against the 1985 Bears Jets defense.
New York coach Rex Ryan said after the game that it was a “complete embarrassment by our defense and by me.”
“I didn’t have the defense prepared the way they should have been, and I take full responsibility for that,” Ryan said. “I’ve never been involved in a game like that in my life; our offense did tremendous and gave us every opportunity to win the game. At the end I thought about using timeouts but I said you know what, they’re not scoring. I was wrong.
“I’m just kind of at a loss for words with our defensive performance. We made that quarterback look like Dan Marino. He was pretty good though, he deserves credit. We have to do a better job at defending that long pass.
“It was just a horrendous day for our defense. You know, we’re a hell of a team and I believe that. I think we have plenty of talent, but we just have to play a hell of a lot better than we did today. Again, that’s my responsibility, and it’s also my responsibility to get the team ready to go against Buffalo next week. We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves; we’re going to play a hell of a lot better than we did today.”
ESPN’s Steve Young, whose aversion to brevity often makes us wonder how he was ever able to get a play called in the huddle before the 40-second clock expired, summed the situation up with uncharacteristic conciseness after the game: “If you’re gonna talk a big game like Rex does, then you need to bring a big stick. And tonight they didn’t bring a stick at all.”
Indeed, the Jets allowed 413 total yards and 31 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter.
Though the final drive, during which Chad Henne led the Dolphins down the field in a way that Chad Pennington couldn’t when the Colts game was in the balance, delivered the win, the eye-opening play came when Ted Ginn got behind Darrelle Revis, supposedly the best cover corner to lace up a pair of cleats since Deion Sanders.
Ginn, who previously had four yards receiving for the entire night, streaked past Revis and the safety arrived just in time to watch Ginn manage to catch the ball for a 53-yard score.
And so the Fins won in Week Five, and every other team in the AFC East lost. Miami is now 2-3 — and the Jets and Patriots are 3-2.
Miami gets a week off to prepare for a visit from the Saints before a rematch with the Jets and a trip to New England. It’s a tall order, but if the team that showed up last night shows up in each of those games, the Dolphins could be in good position to make some noise in 2009, after all.
Look up “overrated” in the dictionary and you will find a Jets logo and a picture of Rex.
Asomugha > Revis
Was anyone else getting a little sickened by the love affair the commentators were having with Mark Sanchez? It was just as bad if not worse then the gushing Brett Farve got last week.
Rex said it best. Just absolutely embarrassing for the NY defense. Braylon and Sanchez played well and the running game was functional against a team known for stopping the run. They were over aggressive on defense and it caused them to be fooled by simple misdirections and counter plays. When a sub-par Dolphins team was getting 5-6 yds on every first down from the get-go I knew there was going to be problems.
Jets really need to re-evaluate. Having Lito Sheppard and Strickland back will help and probably could have helped prevent the long Ginn TD, but the front 7 need to get to the quarterback and force mistakes more than they did last night.
Next is Buffalo, Oakland, Miami, bye, Jacksonville, NE. Jets need to be 6-2 going into the bye, 7-2 going into NE since the Pats will likely be ready for the Jets this time around.
Sad performance by the Jets, but they are still first in the AFC East. The Dolphins will lose to NO next week and fade away.
About coaches taking responsibility for a loss, the fans know who’s to blame!
It’s more noise pollution. The fans just want a win!
Ted Fing Ginn. Huge.
The only thing bigger than that play was Rex Ryans chins.
I really like what the Jets are doing, but I found myself rooting for Miami the whole game. Tony Sparano doesn’t get enough credit for what he has done in Miami. No offense to the Tuna, but Sparano has had this team playing very competitive football since he arrived.
Does he ever like… you know… shut up?
“Ol’ blood and guts” reverse psychology sometimes works.
Ryan basically said that his defense sucked when it was he that didn’t prepare them for three different quarterbacks in one game? Who could prepare for that? It was an awesome site.
Sanchez played great, but a couple quarterback draws or bootlegs can really keep the chains moving once in a while. Miami proved that. Otherwise, Sanchez is really gonna be great with Edwards now. Edwards was obviously sucking on purpose in Cleveland. Playing with a purpose can really make a player. Edwards was fantastic!
Then Ryan said that Penne played pretty good. No sh*t! But, who could have predicted a quality start from that guy? He had some fantastic throws last night. You simply can’t do anything against perfection sometimes when you came with the intention of stopping the run only…..
Sanchez could have won the game for the Jets in the end, but he needed one more possession….and dumass Ryan didn’t bother to stop the clock. Shoulda conceded the touchdown to get the ball back immediately. Then he would have been considered a genius if that had worked. Holmgren used to do that with Farve ((or try to do it). The number one roll of the head coach during the game is to know when to call timeout!
Ryan will have to figure that out if he ever wants to win big games. And ironically it will be with his mouth.
Excellent time management by Miami at the end, and Ronnie Brown is a stud, as is Ricky Williams. You can bet that Parcells was on the headset down the stretch.
That was a great game last night!
Give J-Lo some credit!
Rex Ryan is an arrogant SOB ain’t he ? Henne played awesome and made some big time throws under pressure when his Team really needed them. I thought it was a great game between two Teams on the rise. Both these young QB’s look like they have bright futures.
Florio actually called for a Miami win, I guess it’s true what they say, even a blind pig snorts up a truffle every now and then.
Some times the better team doesn’t win. But even if you believe that’s true you’re still better off keeping your mouth shut.
Ryan had best pray to the football gods that they keep winning. Because his act is going to get stone cold real fast if they don’t.
Most of you guys must be to young to remember Rex’s Dada Buddy, lets just whip out the ole acorn falling close to the tree thingy.

wow the Miami over NY pick is almost as bad as the Reskins to the superbowl pick florio..Pick with your head not your heart…

J-E-T-S– Suck-Suck-Suck
Good thing they won there SB
Sanchez played great?? Jets homers are ridiculous. Sanchez was 12-24 for 172 and a TD. 50% completion and a 172 is hardly a great game. Henne outplayed him by a mile and wasn’t even on the field half the time cuz of the wildcat. I don’t get this love affair with Sanchez and the media. F the Jets and their loud mouths. Can’t even lose with class. Scott called Miami’s offense a “gimmick”. Well that “gimmick” offense just handed you your a$$ big mouth.
Rex Ryans will need to consult with Buddy Ryans before going to NE.
Hell yeah!
Rex, I don’t quiet understand how you can disrespect the Dolphins (Henne) by stating that your defense made Chad Henne look like Dan Marino. It was very obvious that the better quarterback in this game was victorious and it should also be pointed out that it takes a total team effort in order to produce a victory. Yes, Chad Henne played an excellent game, however, in order for any offensive play to be successful, each offensive player has to carry out and execute his part in a successful manner. It appeared that every sports caster, media and Jets’ fan, had aready placed the “W” in the Jets column prior to the initial kickoff for the MNF game. We all know that you people desired so much to see Mark Sanchez (Jets) out do Chad Henne (Dolphins) and all the hype associated with it but the entire nation (world) has twice seen on Monday night in the last few weeks that the Dolphins are a much better team than their record would indicate. You know, it never ceases to amaze me that regardless of who the opposition may be for the Dolphins, that anti-Dolphins “Berman” (ESPN) will always perdict a Dolphins lost. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll stop being a Dolphins hater and stop predicting with his heart and start doing so with his head. One word of caution, Drew Brees and the N.O. Saints, better prepare themselves to play a prepared Miami Team that will ready to pounce on the prey like a ferocious lion. Lets go FINS……………..
“Revis says:

When a sub-par Dolphins team was getting 5-6 yds on every first down from the get-go I knew there was going to be problems. ”
Last time I checked, Skippy, the Dolphins beat your ass the last game of the year last season to win the division. Sub-par? If the Dolphins are subpar, then I wonder what the Jets are? I think both teams are right there, neck and neck. Their games have been decided by 1-2 plays the last few so they aren’t much different. Stop being a little bitch and give respect where it is due. your douchebag coach stopped the Fins Wildcat with his Raven’s D and now he says that he didn’t get your D prepared? Bullshit, you guys don’t have the horses that the Ravens do.
Maybe if Sanchez had looked for someone other than Braylon Edwards more than once or twice…. what a fool.
Miami is underrated. They have been tough even in their losses. They were the better team plain and simple.
and can someone tell Jaws how to say Sa’nchez (not Sanche’z).
We have to give Chad Pennington a lot of credit for getting Chad Henne ready to play NFL football.
what a good game to watch, I was expecting the jets to be dominant on offnese, but that offensive scheme the dolphins were running was incredible, it felt like a progressive college programt. Henne is going to be somthing special, or at least above average, the wildcat is impressive (I hadn’t seen it done live beore, to that extent), I love3d how they were sw2itching up personelle and they were able to keep up their rhythm. good game by both teams.
Two things I think summarized the game:
1. The Jets D couldn’t stop anything in the 4th quarter. The Dolphins could have put my grandma back there running the offense and Miami would have been able to drive for the winning TD.
2. Chad Henne outplayed Sanchez by a mile. Sanchez was mundane (at best), if not for a couple of truly spectacular catches by Edwards (props to the Jets for getting him) Sanchez’ stat line would have been borderline horrific… sub .500 , probably under 150 yards and (at most) 1 TD.
And one final thought…
It’s looking like a 3-horse race for the AFC East. All three teams show promise; all 3 teams have holes. In situations like that, I’ll take the team that has done it before and has proven they know what it takes to win. Patriots for the division title, with NYJ and (perhaps) the Dolphins in the fight for a wildcard.
Wow, there are some really long blurbs here, kinda scary. I’ll keep mine short. I like Rex. I like his attitude and his talent. He’s a latter-day, defensive minded Martz. It remains to be seen if he is as good as Martz, but I’m in his corner. Win, Rex, win.
Rex Ryan needs to go on a diet. Henne and the Dolphins looked great. That Wildcat offense is fun to watch, especially when it is carving up fat Rexy’s team.
Except for a few successful fake punts and a bad P.I. call, the jets weren’t sh!t last night. Edwards was a different story.
Against the 1985 Bears defense. Low blow.

wait…one loss…in a tight game…away and everyone says the Jets suck…typical fans…I still pick the Jets to win that game every week if it happened.
Defense wins superbowls not Wildcats and if the jets have a defenses that will be lights out 4 out of every 5 weeks…i’ll take it.
And Chad Henne…congrats you threw one ball deep and got lucky and the rest were check downs! Atleast Sanchez was taking it down field. Miami didn’t impress me, just told me that they do not have an offense except college plays. If anyone things that Rex Ryan and every other coach in the league are going to design for this, please. One dimensional team that will be exposed pretty soon.
Three Weeks…in NY…new game…Jets take the Dolphins out of the picture!
“And the home of the JETS…”
nce going rex,yea that was real smart putting everything you had for the season in 1 game against the pats!so now that they are playing bad and losing so are you instead building on that game and moving past them.think when you have to play them in n.e. later and are tied or even behind they are not going to remember that game?just like your old man fat and a big mouth who never won anything on his own!
By the way…Marc Anthony and J-Lo…celebrating for the Dolphins and buying part of them…NONSENSE…they are from NY…Marc Anthony if i remember correctly is from Washington Heights and J-Lo or Jenny from the “block” is from the bronx…
so grow up!
well nobody thought that Miami was going to win. Especially with a quarterback thats only started one game against the shittay Bills. As Joey Porter says the AFC East Title still runs through Miami.
oh and how bout the guys in the both pretty much sucking off Darrelle Revis and then him getting burned by Ted Ginn. That shut ‘em up real quick…. i guess he isn’t the greatest corner to ever play the game Jaws
Actually, that’s back to back losses. You live by the blitz ……..you die by the blitz. Chubby Ryan needs to learn the lessons his Daddy never did. Gonna be a fun division race.
I like the way the Jets play defense, they’re fun to watch.
The 85 Bears they are not though, that’s for sure.
That was an amazing 4th quarter, though. Wish I’d seen the rest of the game.
Florio writes “ESPN’s Steve Young, whose aversion to brevity…” Of course PFT never goes on and on about the few NFL things its writers actually about- right Florio?
Lets see- an intellgent, and respected Hall of Fame QB with a good knowledge of the game vs a blogger with access to a few disgruntled players and coaches and a average knowledge of the game. Who would you want to hear from….
reality is:
1- jets D got run the hell over
2- Henne was only on the field about 65% of the snaps and put up a 130 rating making Sanchez look… well … like a rookie
3- Phins special teams got brutally embarrassed
looking carefully at the plays…. this was a heartbeat from a 30+ point blowout… the Jets were barely catching screens and wildcat by a toe saving sure TDs, and a about 30% of Jets supposed rush offense and 10 points was due to Phins special teams blowing 2 plays….
to cap it off Ryan pukes at the press insulting himself, his team, the other team… everyone… bad day to be a jet fan… I hang my head in shame
News Flash…News Flash….News Flash
Everything is better today in Jets land. After his morning meeting and after all eyes were dried, King Rex ordered BK Triple Cheese Whoppers and Extra Large Milkshakes for the entire J-E-T-S coaching staff.
Next week King Rex will line-up at Nose Tackle and throw his considerable weight around.
Go J-E-T-S…….(puke here)
Two special teams fakes and a phantom interference call and this game isn’t even close.
The Dolphins ran the ball great and kept the Jets defense guessing. Three guys took a snap on the final drive.
Buddy Jr. made a few calls early, but late in the game, he got out-coached.
Without the two trick plays and a couple of broderline pass interferance calls this game is a blow out!
i think rex should have given more credit to the miami offense and less to his defense “collapsing”.
i was completely sick of the media’s masturbation over the jets for the entire 2 hour pregame, and during the telecast. everything was about sanchez, washington, revis.
i don’t want those guys to fail, but hell, can we get some more even reporting? bring those expectations down to earth guys. Miami is far better than their record indicates. they were one play away from beating Indy two weeks ago in MNF.
Pennington deserves my game ball. seriously. He mentored & coached Henne the last year and a half, turning Henne from a turnover gunslinger into a smart manager with a heck of an arm. glad to see ginn finally get that bomb TD he’s supposed to get. the future looks bright in miami.
ronnie brown is pacing peterson in both yards & TDs. i smell another probowl for ronnie if this keeps up. ricky is the unheralded running back, dude deserves a lot of credit. the last TD was big – ricky was injured and put it in for one more play to sell the fake on the end-around. you’ll see right after ronnie fakes the handoff ricky goes down on that ankle. big game for them.
I like coaches that want to win with strong D’s.. they usually bring more wins and championships over the long run than the flying cirucus’ Im just not convinced that RR is a head coach.. great D coordinator.. yeah.. but so was/is Mike Nolan.. RR seems awfully like a rah rah, snakeoil salesmen coach.. they usually get no more than two contracts in this league.. RR is workin on his first.. not sure what Rex is yet.. and beware of all the new Rexchise fans.. they love you quick but will turn just as quick when the L’s pile up.. One thing for sure the NYJets have lots of first round drafted talent on their D.. lets see what happens..
Before some people send Henne off to Canton, check the stats. Only 1 of his first 14 passes went for more than 10 yards and that one was a screen in the backfield that Ricky Williams ran for 59 yards. Granted, he did a creditable job but it wasn’t as mind-boggling as some suggest.
Ryan is an idiot, runs in the family. Just give credit where it’s due asswipe. After saying it’s an embarrassment he gives the other team credit. It cant be both ways sexy Rexy. And dont give this “didnt have my D prepared” crap. You knew EXACTLY what the Dolphins were bringing on offense, your defense just couldnt stop it. It wasn’t a matter of wether or not they might use the wildcat, you damn well knew it was coming. Time to go back to daddy’s drawing board.
Don’t be hater Jets sucks. Miami Dolphins are number 1 regardless. Go Dolphins all the way to the super bowl.
“F the Jets and their loud mouths. Can’t even lose with class. Scott called Miami’s offense a “gimmick”. Well that “gimmick” offense just handed you your a$$ big mouth.”
It’s the same crapola we heard when the Jets lost to the Saints. Rather than concede that they got beat by a better defense, they blamed it on a rookie QB. The same rookie QB they were praising before the game as “Sanchise”.
The Jets just need to get over themselves and accept the fact that they are just an average team with a loudmouth coach. Just like his dad.
