Whitlock chimes in on Rush

Our pal Jason Whitlock of FOXSports.com has finally offered a take regarding the ongoing flap over Rush Limbaugh’s bid to buy the Rams.

And Whitlock, as usual (excepts when he’s criticizing us), nails it.

He thinks that it’s all a publicity stunt

And he’s right.  Limbaugh knows he’s never going to own all or part of any NFL team.  But he has gotten plenty of free P.R. over the past nine days, and he’ll continue to get even more until his bid is rejected or withdrawn.

Then, the guy who is bombastic and polarizing and really, really rich and really, really smart will receive something that a guy that bombastic and polarizing and rich and smart rarely receives.

Sympathy.

He’ll paint himself as a victim of the same intolerance and bias of which he is routinely accused, and the NFL will have to find a way to placate the Limbaugh supporters who think that he has been screwed.

Meanwhile, Whitlock again cites “the quote.”  You know, this quote:  “Let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100
years because it was a bad thing.  Quite the opposite: Slavery built the
South.  I’m not saying we should bring it back.  I’m just saying it had
its merits.  For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.”

On Monday, Limbaugh offered a tame reaction to the words that, if he’s telling the truth, others are jamming into his mouth.  As we said it last night, he needs to project the same kind of aggressive, incredulous, and pointed denial that any of us would be shouting from the roof of our houses if someone was trying to say that we said something like that.

Unless, you know, we actually said it.

UPDATE:  In the first segment of his Tuesday show, Limbaugh promised to address the “general full-fledged smear campaign” that he finds “breathtaking.”  He points to “fake, totally made up quotes” that are being attributed to him and “repeated without any fact checking at all by . . . liberal sports writers.”  (Rush needs to realize that there’s a possibility that he’s disliked not only by liberals, but by moderates and/or conservatives who happen to think he’s a big jerk.)

Whitlock has no racism issues. He’s a completely unbiased source of opinion on the issue.

Damn Florio, you really hit a gold mine with these Limbaugh posts. As long as you keep grinding out these “hit generators”, there’s really no need to write about anything, you know, sports related.

This is all a publicity stunt. Limbaugh does not have the cash. He will be as much of an owner of the Rams as all those goofy celebrities are owners of the Dolphins.
It is one thing to have a disposable 10 or 20 million on hand but 500 million to a billion is some serious money.

Man…ever since you’ve gone somewhat mainstream affiliating with NBC, you sure do kiss a lot of @ss now. You pimp Whitlock whenever you can and the guy’s been on every sports website on the Web, unable to stick with anyone because he’s hard to work with. Ask anyone in the Kansas City sports media.

    FROM RUSH:
There’s a quote out there that I first saw it in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last week that I somehow, some time ago, defended slavery and started cracking jokes about it. And, you know, you say a lot of things in the course of 15 hours a week, over the course of 21 years. We’ve gone back, we have looked at everything we have. There is not even an inkling that any words in this quote are accurate. It’s outrageous, but it’s totally predictable.
GET THE TRUTH OUT FLORIO BEFORE QUOTING THOSE WHO TELL LIES.

  8. ballhawk1 says: Oct 13, 2009 12:21 PM

I can tell you this much if we start to regulate business on the basis of opinion, political affiliation, religion, or race this country is screwed. Because i guarantee it RIGHT NOW every single person on the planet is guilty of saying or using a racially charged remark at one time or another. Worst of al is we let the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, Black Panthers, KKK, or other known racial radicals dictate to us what is ok and not ok we are worse than screwed. That said any chance we get back to football??

If Limbaugh said what you are claiming he said (You’re claiming it by posting it) then let’s see the proof of the quote.
Oh-Bama specifically said that he was going to take money away from “White America” to give it to his “Black brothers and sisters” as payment for slavery.
Why no focus on that racism?

The problem with that theory is that by fighting it, you run the risk of bringing more attention to the issue than it would have gotten on its own. On the internet, this phenomenon is generally known as the “Streisand Effect” after a similar situation blew up on Babs.

As a lawyer, Florio, you should know that libel suits often backfire on the plaintiff for similar reasons.

Florio, your logic on Rush is so far off it’s incredible. As an attorney, you should know that a libel or slander claim is one of the toughest cases to prove. And what would be the point of doing it? To clear his name? Even if his name was cleared from saying this, every individual that hates him now won’t change their mind. In fact, more people will hate him because he’s got all the money in the world and he’s attacking a few reporters? I mean, if he has the $ to be in a group to purchase a football team, I don’t think he needs the law suit. Defending himself here legally would be an absolute waste of time.

I’m a republican and despise Rush Limbaugh, along with the rest of his intolerant ilk. Whatever happened to centralists?
At it’s core, I feel I’m in concert with Republican ideals. That being said, goofs like Rush have hijacked things and taken them so far to the extreme that the “party” no longer resembles what it claimed once to be. I’m ashamed to be affiliated with that lout.
Ron Paul, warts and all, is 10x the thinker and more representative of what Republicans need to be….and yeah, I know in his heart of heart’s he’s Libertarian, but he’s a damn smart man and closer to the middle than anyone they prop up.

  26. PhillyHouse says: Oct 13, 2009 12:44 PM

If Limbaugh wants to own a team, it’s his American right. But I have the right to boo and “hate on” the Rams every chance I get. NFL free agents have the right to choose other teams besides the Rams.
@ Ballhawk: To lump Sharpton and Jackson with the KKK is appalling. I don’t recall either of them hanging any white people from trees. The KKK are just like Al Qaeda. They are terrorists who blaspheme God’s messages.

  27. FootballFan says: Oct 13, 2009 12:44 PM

Look we all know how polarized the country is right now. I am for all the principles that everyone has. But having said that, the things Limbaugh has said and believes in and the fact that so many Americans agree/like/follow him, tells me more about the people of this great country than him. And it is a sad reflection on this great country. Many things said by the people on the opposite side of Limbaugh are a sad reflection too. I am with neither side.
But when you think more about it, have the people changed? Or have they found a voice in Limbaugh?

  28. williamsbros says: Oct 13, 2009 12:44 PM

The reason people have a problem with the mainstream media (and PFT you are mainstream now via your affiliation with NBC), is that quotes like this supposed slavery quote are posted with no audio to back it up, which would be really easy to find if it were true.
Florio, you are doing the same thing here that you condemn other writers for doing, if you’re going to print that quote you need to make crystal clear every time that it’s nothing more than an unsubstantiated accusation until proven otherwise.

So now that he is “shouting from the rooftops” that he didn’t say it I suppose you’ll drop this nonsense?” Also, what a brilliant P.R. move you and Whitlock unconvered – getting branded a rascist by hack sports bloggers with phony quotes. Brilliant! So, Dave Checketts is in on this P.R. stunt too? This is surely Pulitzer material. I come to this website for football news and links. More and more it’s being overcome by uninformed and inane commnetary and analysis – even on football issues, such as questioning why no replay was done on a field goal without the basic knowledge that the rules don’t allow it, which would have taken all of two minutes to discover. This site is truly becoming NBC quality.

Florio needs to realize that it is Rush’s assertion that most of the sports media consists of liberals, which is why he said that the media had been very desirous that a black quarterback succeed back in 2003.
The fact that sportswriters are piling on Limbaugh with a fake quote as a bludgeon ought to be pretty good evidence that he’s on to something.

Mr. Florio, the two posts about Limbaugh’s involvement in Rams’ ownership bidding show low standards–even for a lawyer.
Why is the burden of proof on Mr. Limbaugh with these quotes?
I’d challenge Byran Burwell (himself, with a questionable history of supporting free speech) to produce the dates of his quotes and his sources. Shouldn’t the burden of proof be on the accuser?
But instead, you look to join the smear by jumping to the court of public opinion–not being satisfied with Mr. Limbaugh’s response–and not seeking any interest in the source of the charges.
    Unfortunate, even for a lawyer.

The quotes from DoomsDay are easy to find and Limbaugh definitely said those things. As a supporter of Ron Paul, I agree with Mindworm. I think a lot of Republicans are more of the Ron Paul camp, but our party has been hijacked by right wing nut jobs just as the Democrats have been hijacked by the Pelosi left wing idiots. I think most people tend towards being centric-left or centric-right, but those people don’t have the money and/or don’t make for interesting tv.

Until then any argument over Geneva conventions is a waste of Oxygen. Florio’s rants on Rush are so rife with hypocrisy that his pic just might end up on Dictionary.com as the most recent and best example. Anyone who worships at the Olbermann Altar has ZERO place whining about mean spiritedness or dragging down the quality of discourse especially when said rants are based on 100% fabrications. Nice try on spinning out of that one BTW Florio (“he didn’t deny vehemently enough” Pfffft) but no one with a pulse is buying it. This site has been doing it for years going back to the “Lord Favre” obsession -sooo classy!- and beyond (hell he did it recently enough to have a player threaten to kick his ass and have you whining about avoiding the guy). Considering how cheap the shots are taken around here on a pretty regular basis it’s pretty amusing to watch the source of that lowbrow approach get his panties in a bunch over a guy doing basically the same thing but from the other side of the coin. I mean seriously….you espouse to Olbermann and expect anyone not to scoff at this load of tripe?

Before you try to blow your wad on me, I personally think Rush is an idiot and has no business even thinking about buying an NFL team. Just the rumors alone have polarized the NFL fan base and one would think he would be smart enough to realize that actually making an attempt would make things worse for the game he “claims” to love.

VoxVeritas-Under your logic, OJ would have to prove he didn’t kill his wife. If the words were said by Rush then they were said at a specific time. All you have to do is name that time. That’s the problem with charges made by ignorant sheep such as yourself. You only can repeat the liberal talking points. It would probably make your head explode if you had an original thought.

Hey Florio, cite some actually examples of Limbaugh ever painting himself as some sort of “victim” ???
Come on Mike, show us some !
This just more made up bull$hit by Florio. Just like the supposed quotes on Monday that were attributed to Limbaugh, but “magically” no one in the media has a single sound bite of.
Gee, you’d almost think someone here had an “agenda” or something. Like making more money for HIMSELF, or something. Of course hypocrite Florio will keep up this nonsense so that there are 75 more posts on Limbaugh over the next few days so that HE (Florio) will get more money by getting more clicks.
Typical liberal hypocrite phoney – criticize others for what they THEMSELVES do.

I’m lovin’ it, Florio. Even though there are a few too many lame political diatribes, it’s great reading. Personally, I can’t wait for the “When will the other owners force Al Davis to sell” article. That would be a great liberal vs. conservative debate. Could you imagine some of the lows and highs wandering down that road? Laughing my @$$ off.

REALLY last time I checked the Fairness Doctrine (censorship of media not agreeing with liberals) was sponsored leading Senate and House Dems!
Finally for perspective: There are 2 forms of liberal. One is the Laissez Faire form the other Socialist! I will let everyone in here decide for themselves, but I believe the Liberal Dems we have today are Socialist. When you want govt to control almost every aspect of your life (Education, Health Care, Sports, Affirmative Action, ACLU, NAACP, Welfare/WIC, and so on) that is the defining role of a Socialist/Communist society. C’mon people wake up we are turning this into a political problem, it isnt Rush says things that are perceived as racial by those who want to make them racial, just as those people say things to anger others….it is a stupid cycle that wont be broken!

if rush has the money, libs who arent in the voting group have no say. it is up to the owners.
i do support ron paul, and dislike how the major media including faux news, ran him off the stage WHEN HE WAS GETTING LOADS OF VOTES.
and the establishment wing of the GOP just had to have loser mccain run.
i dont see rush as doing that much good with a republican in the white house but he is doing some good these days.

The burden of proof is on the accuser not the defendant. A man is innocent until proven guilty. Anyone claiming a law degree should know that.
Why does Floro participate in this libel, this drive by media, that assasinates the character of a good man without any evidence or cause?
Florio was anti-American enough to endorse an anti-capitalist like Barack Husein Obama in this very blog. The destroyer who is nationalizing a free market evconomy and doing everything he can to ruin the economic status of this nation.
    WHY SPAWN LIES, FLORIO??!!
Florio you have not found one quote by Limbaugh, you cannot cite one broadcast where any was said by Rush that would cause the NFL not to accept his group’s bid.
Just like Satan the great accuser, you only throw forth lies. Nothing can stick because there is no substance in any left wing commie anti-American attack.
    >Rush Limbaugh is not a divider or polarizor. His words defend this nation and unite us in our common heritage!
This garbage spewed forth in this blog is the division, the turning of Amercians against their shared values and great heritage. What is more divisive than an ambulance chasing lawyer making up theories on how to bring lawsuits against the maximum number of citizens?
->Rush’s workforce is more varied than PFT’s!!
    >Rush’s program is about the issues of the day and discussing various viewpoints in an effort to unify the nation.
->Rush’s program he gives Left Wing liberals head of the line priviledges so that varied viewpoints can be heard.
You lefties will not discuss differing points of view and seek to silence anyone with a differing point of view.
->Rush is far more diverse and tolerant than PFT and any other left wing organization.
Just look at the comments here. There is no left wing commie offering any concrete reason why Rush’s bid should not be considered.
They just childishly call him names.
    As Florio has done.

ballhawk: Have you ever heard of Birth of a Nation? That was the first blockbuster movie in American cinematic history. It depicted blacks “ruining” American society. Hundreds of thousands of Americans at that time loved it. The director was a KKK sympathizer. Even President Woodrow Wilson supported the movie. After the movie, Jim Crow was heightened, and the Klan’s membership dramatically increased. Have you ever seen Emmitt Till’s face? Have you ever seen pictures of blacks hanging from trees? If you have seen these things yet still believe the histrionics of Jackson and Sharpton are tantamount to these atrocities, you, sir, are the true “mental idiot.” By the way, I didn’t mention the Black Panthers because I don’t recall them dressing up in hoods murdering thousands of innocent white people. Promoting “Black Pride” is not saying “Down with Whitey”, just as Irish Pride, Italian Pride, or Jewish Pride is not a denouncement of other cultures.

Jason Whitlock as well as other so called journalist have opened themselves up to some liable charges. Was Mr Whilock being lazy, or just another shark in the feeding frenzy. Not only did he not source any of his information about what Mr Limbaugh said, he was repeating fabricated quotes that can in now way be sourced back to Mr Limbaugh. The orginal source for the qutoes used by Mr Whitlock and others was from a get this “Wikepedia” article about rush, and were put there and noted by Wikepedia as not being sourced.
It is one thing to repeat absurd statements just in a conversation about a media figure you disagree with, but when the context in which those words are spoken is an attempt to influence a business decision affecting that person, then it becomes a very serious legal issue.
The lesson here Mr Whitlock, is this, if your going to write something, research it, check your facts, and for goodness sakes have a legitimate source for any thing you are going to attribute as a quote to someone else.

    Jason.
I read you on MSN and all I could shout was, “Oh no you didn’t!!!” You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are mightily deceived. You open your mouth regularly as if you attain to a higher moral and ethical standard while your published moral and ethical content is consistently at a very low standard. As George used to say, “You are so low you could play handball off the curb.” It is rather obvious, that at best, you still don’t listen to anything R.L. says or writes. Neither do you pay attention or even acknowledge anything his black friends (who actually know him) say or write. You quote some dumb “hate R.L.” book w/ fake quotes. Your source is about as credible as relying on Pat Buchanan to show us the way on how to love Jews. Attacking while denying (I doubt you are truly ignorant of the) facts (B.C. & M.L.K.,Jr would be ashamed of you) shows who the real hatemonger is. As someone who has spent years helping our folk in the same inner city that you ALWAYS ignored, your remarks are not only mean spirited, they are very hypocritical.
Quick Jason: What is the name of that fine young man (who was on CNN a few days ago) who is actually doing something in and for our people in our city? No cheating. You can’t look him up on the web to find the answer. Don’t claim you know a higher road, when you have no interest or pulse on what it’s really like down here where good folk live.
We are NEVER going to get anywhere as a culture or people w/ pretend leaders like J.J. or A.S.. Neither are we going to get anywhere with mean spirited “journalists”. You condemn another journalist for committing a “1” or a “2” on the hatemongering scale, while what you have written for years consistently earns “6’s” or “7’s”!
Where I work, our (white) manager tunes in R.L.’s show in the warehouse so we all have to listen. None of us tend to agree with much of what Limbaugh says. What we hear is a lot of humor, excellent rhetoric and our response to most of Rush’s comments is, “Yeah, but here is what is more important…” or “What you’re not saying is…” He never tells the whole story. Based on what I hear, he doesn’t seem to have a clue as to what the other side even is. R.L.’s “hatemongering” is many levels below yours. Anyone who has followed your column and R.L.’s over the years can easily see that. He is usually wrong, but never ignorant (of his side at least), never mean spirited. Our manager thinks we love R.L. because she hears us laughing and cutting up so much during his show. We laugh at the insensitivity and ignorance. That response is infinitely preferable to the screaming in frustration and cussin’ and carryin’ on that we could so often easily choose. My girlfriends and I have decided to live above that.
R.L. often makes small-minded comments. Anyone who has to talk for hours every day is probably just as guilty. Is anyone’s brain 100%, 100% of the time? This is not the first time R.L. has made a less than brilliant comment. Probably won’t be his last. I’d take bets on that one, but it is much more fun at the boats. When someone makes a small minded comment, it is the perfect opportunity to take the highroad. Anyone else who gets targeted can simply answer w/ a kind, classy remark and show grace and mercy. That kind of a comment speaks volume as to quality, character and everything that will lift us up as a people. Bill Cosby has been leading for decades. There are countless books you could read on MLK Jr. Do you still not get it at all?!?!
It don’t matter that Jay-Z owns a basketball team. That don’t help our people. If R.L. owns the whole NFL, how can that hurt us? R.L. is greedy. He wouldn’t trade one fast black a** if it will make him money. Aren’t you a sports journalist? Is that one too hard to get? It is if you are blinded by hatred & bigotry. R.L. hasn’t hurt our people and he hasn’t held us down. Whoopi Goldberg with what she said on Hollywood Squares holds us down. Evander Holyfield w/ his 900 children holds us down. Wilt the Stilt claiming he done everyone who ever lived holds us down. (Why couldn’t he had some class like Bill Russell?) James Lofton raping all those babies up in Green Bay. He holds us down. (Do a little homework on him, Jason, and you can print something of worth)
For generations whites held us down. Most don’t now, but many still do. I have met many and worked for several. They are sad, but they didn’t shoot my babies. But now we have many folk of color holding us down. They pretend to lead and act like we can’t take responsibility. They scream about injustice wherever they can find it and it doesn’t help us — at all. Empowerment is not about entitlement. It is about freedom to take responsibility. Am I going to follow pretend “African-American” leaders who have their own agenda that benefits them and no one else? Not a chance. Am I going to choose to live at their level? No. Have they ever benefited anyone, ever?
    They hold us down.
Jason, when you talk like them, you hold us down too. I seen you in person. You can eat a lot more chickens than I can. You haven’t backed off the table in a long, long time. If you’re holdin’ us down, that’s a lot of holdin’ down. (Oh, no you didn’t! Oh, yes I did!)
It should be obvious that I chose differently than many and am well educated. I take a lot of pride in that. I work at a warehouse because of discrimination and closed doors I encountered at other job (non) opportunities for decades now. But it does give me the freedom to spend time w/ those I care about. Opportunity hasn’t knocked and it probably won’t tomorrow. Denzel probably won’t call tomorrow, either. Oh Hell. I seem to not have had the breaks that others and obviously you have had. Don’t get me wrong, Jason. You have worked hard for a long time to get where you are. But you have had some breaks too. Some of us will never see those breaks. Being held down by our own folk is worse than never gettin’ the hookup. A lot worse.
R.L. owning an NFL team and continuing to say ignorant things doesn’t hold us down. What do atrocities of slavery have to do with a mild (possible) bigot owning a sports team? The atrocities of slavery in the past do hurt us. A lot. Still to this day. But not nearly as much as the current slavery we are in. Entitlements that keep us alive but down at the bottom. A justice system that rewards thugs with probation for raping babies but puts a brother in jail for years because he fought dogs?!?! Little opportunity. Few good jobs. Slavery hasn’t ended, it has just morphed and most that claim to speak for us can’t even see the problem. It is easy for an “African-American” to get a job at Sprint. That helps their government mandated quota. But see if they ever get promoted. That’s real injustice. That’s real slavery in the 21st century.
I don’t even understand why R.L. upsets you. Well, maybe I do. If you live in the hypocritical world of elite, silver spoon people who don’t know what real life is like in the real world (folk like R.L.) then maybe he could upset you.
Jason, you are more like the bigot you hate than you realize. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.
I will say this plain so any who can’t see this clearly will get it.
    R.L. DOESN’T HOLD US DOWN.
And Michael Vick fighting dogs doesn’t hold us down. One of my babies feeds his babies by fighting dogs. Hollywood bitc*es and lawyer elitists (who have no clue what it is to really work) who say it’s ok to kill our babies but not a damn dog, hold us down. (If they had their way, my baby would turn from his wicked ways and do something much more respectable like smuggle 9’s or deal weed.) Serena’s thug attitude on the court holds us down. They should have thrown her fat a** off the court immediately for what she said. Her apology wasn’t. I was shamed. You were shamed. We all were. Her momma should have shoved the bar of Ivory right in her mouth on national TV and then slapped it.
Jason, you need some old school edumacation and common sense!!!
    1) Stop being such a weak-minded elitist.
    2) Be a true liberal and open your mind to new ideas.
    3) Pick real ethical and moral battles that matter, not pretend ones that elitists pick to get ratings and press.
    4) Truly care about our people and do lots of volunteer work in the hood (out of the limelight of the press).
    5) Then you will be a true leader and spokesman for us. You certainly have the work ethic. Just bring your lens into focus.
Living in fear or retribution has never brought anything good.
Standing side by side and lifting up the oppressed does.
