Cowboys move the video board, temporarily

When the conundrum regarding the video board at the new Cowboys Stadium erupted in August, one of the primary pieces of evidence in favor of moving the monstrous, four-sided drive-in screen up came from the fact that the band U2 would be playing at the venue in October, and that the contraption would be elevated to accommodate the even more monstrous U2 stage.

But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants the video board to remain at its current height.  The fact that the league office approved the configuration before the place was built bolsters his case; the addition of his son on the Competition Committee means it likely will stay where it is beyond 2009.

Still, the thing was successfully moved to accommodate Bono and friends, and there’s a video at the U2 web site regarding the challenges involved — along with video of the mammoth U2 stage pressed up against the bottom of Jones’ giant television.

Once it is moved up, why don’t they do the smart thing and jus leave the damned thing up?

  2. Hugh G. Rection says: Oct 14, 2009 8:55 AM

Jerry Jones whined that it would cost him millions to move the board, but he can do it temporarily (ostensibly for much less money) for a silly rock concert? Is it just to rub the NFL’s nose in the fact that they approved the mistake? I think the monstrosity should be moved.

thats like the two biggest over-compensator’s of the sports and music world going head to head

  4. chapnasty says: Oct 14, 2009 9:07 AM

As a Cowboys fan this makes me hate Jerry Jones that much more. If this was about the money then it’s already been moved, the money has been spent, just leave it there. This now proves that it’s more about JJ flipping the bird to everyone who thinks it should be moved. He is just saying “I’m Jerry Jones and you can go to hell.” It screams of lack of professionalism or class. While JJ isnt quite on the level of Dan Snyder he is close to becoming Al Davis.

  5. penguininbondage says: Oct 14, 2009 9:09 AM

    Maybe they’ll drop it.

  6. AirlineGuy says: Oct 14, 2009 9:10 AM

In a real game, when some idiot rookie isn’t trying to make a name for himself, not one single kick has even been close to the board.
This is a non-issue, but the talking heads and Dallas haters just love to keep trying to make it into one.

  7. Rickah99 says: Oct 14, 2009 9:10 AM

Just another example that all things Dallas are back-asswards!!

  8. Zaggs says: Oct 14, 2009 9:10 AM

But, but, it costs MILLIONS to move it……at least thats what Jerry said.

  9. lezmaka says: Oct 14, 2009 9:17 AM

Didn’t they say it would cost $1 million to move it or something like that? Somehow I doubt the concert was able to bring in an extra million to cover the cost of moving the TV, or that U2 would pay for it…

  10. VoxVeritas says: Oct 14, 2009 9:20 AM

Nobody has hit the video boards since Jeff Fissure decided to forego making his mega-crappy team better in favor of making a failed non-point and had his jag punter hit them.

  11. Count Sacula says: Oct 14, 2009 9:23 AM

Jerry Jones and Bono, the two biggest egos on the planet collide.

  14. Leviathan says: Oct 14, 2009 9:29 AM

You have eighty-seven posts on this subject now…how many punts have hit the board since the season began?

  15. Bill In DC says: Oct 14, 2009 9:30 AM

Yes, it was moved, but had to be disconnected to do so.
So why are we recycling non-news from two months ago? Fact is at its present height through 4 games (2 preseason, 2 regular season) there has been exactly one punt hit the board (out of 50+) and that guy tried to hit it, if he missed he would have had a 25 yd punt.
    It isn’t an issue, period.

  16. tv says: Oct 14, 2009 9:46 AM

Jones is an obnoxious tool who needs to spend a good amount of time trying to extract his head out of his ass.

  17. Quagmire says: Oct 14, 2009 9:48 AM

The amount of urine & vomit on Jonestown’s floor, from the U2 concert, was less than for Cowboy games.

  18. urinal mint says: Oct 14, 2009 9:48 AM

I was there Monday night for the show.
They couldn’t successfully get the screen moved up high enough to accommodate the stage, so what ended up happening was U2 placed their choreographed corporate monstrosity toward one endzone and even off to a corner of it a bit.
It looked awkward to say the least. Then again, so did Bono’s boots with 4″ heels to make him the same height as a 14 yr old boy.

  19. urinal mint says: Oct 14, 2009 9:50 AM

It’s time that Florio started a separate page on here for Cowboy-hating non-news items.

  20. Twiz says: Oct 14, 2009 9:57 AM

    @Bill In DC
Try to pay attention in the future. The punter tried to hit it in practice, not in the game.

  21. ballhawk1 says: Oct 14, 2009 9:58 AM

this has never been about money…this is a pissing contest that Jones refuses to budge on. If it can be moved for a concert, then why not permanently? No one can give a good a reason for that….Oh wait it is with in league guidelines….I get that but to end it all it is move leave it! it isnt like Jones can say people wont be able to see….christ the thing is bigger than a drive in movie screen.

Jerry has trouble keeping it up.

  23. Patsfan1776 says: Oct 14, 2009 10:08 AM

I am just shocked that you can’t trust anyone. Jerry said it couldn’t be moved but it is moved. The NFL said it lowered the height requirement from 125ft to 85ft by guessing that it would be ok. Jerry’s architects had no input, it was just a guess. Why not guess 100ft or 90ft?
The scoreboard looks massive and if it is truly adjustable I don’t think I would want to be working under it.

Yeah it’s about being inoperable at the higher level. Seriously you’re gonna hate Jerry Jones over a freaking video board? I mean I can see many reasons why somebody might hate the guy, but seriously, the fricking TV is what does it for you? You deserve Mike Brown.

“Try to pay attention in the future. The punter tried to hit it in practice, not in the game. ”
Oh yeah, that guy was definitely trying to hit it during the game. He punted the ball and his eyes followed the ball right up to the boards and when it hit he started yelling and pointing. He didn’t even attempt to run downfield to cover the punt.

Whoa…. Sir I hate Jerry Jones because of his arrogance and destruction of the greatness that Jimmy Johnson once built. His arrogance is the real reason why a lot of people hate the Cowboys, they just don’t know it yet.
If you want to be a kool-aid drinking Cowboy fan, then fine. I am a good enough fan that I can judge my team on it’s merits and truth. Keep coming up with cleaver names like “Eagurls” rather than understanding your team and its management or the NFL for that matter.

  29. AirlineGuy says: Oct 14, 2009 10:59 AM

Ok everyone saying “just leave it up there”, do this little test. Take your computer screen and move it 20 feet up (may need you to go to your roof or the next floor). Then come back to your computer and tell me what happens. 1) the monitor is no longer attached, thus useless, and 2) you can no longer see it comfortably if at all.
Now imagine you paid MILLIONS for that monitor and did everything to code and by the law of the land. Are you going to just say, “ok, you all made a mistake so I’ll live with it” or are you going to tell everyone that isn’t even affected in the slightest to get lost?
I’m betting it is the latter. If it isn’t then you are just looking for a reason to bitch and hate Dallas/Jerry.

jesus, where are his priorities? and this just shows he CAN move it. why not, uh, just leave it up once it’s up?

I saw a photo of this move and the caption stated this thing weighed 650 tons, which sounds like an awful lot but still, why hang this thing over the top of some 26 people for three hours at a time while they’re trying to earn their living? Engineers are human and make mistakes in weight distribution. Didn’t their practice facility collapse?

  33. russrpm says: Oct 14, 2009 11:29 AM

Everytime this starts up, someone starts screaming about how Jones ruined the great Cowboys team that Jimmy Johnson built. Get real. What built those teams was the lack of a salary cap. Whatever player they needed, Jones went out and got, regardless of price. Then Johnson, with the best players available, was able to coach them to the super bowl. It took both of them, working together. And, if you notice, neither has been as successful since; no more superbowls in Dallas, and mediocre success for Johnson in Miami. If I were the other owners in the NFL, I would do my best to get the players union to the table, and lock in the salary cap as soon as possible or there could be another dynasty in Dallas.

How charitable of you to assign reasons to people. What, you think that people can’t think for themselves? You spout your conservative garbage, but that’s definitely a liberal trait. I bet the NFL is lining up at your door hoping to snag your talents of perception. You’re a legend in your own mind.
I reserve my hatred for people that jack with me in my real life, scrub. Not some damn NFL owner. Again, you deserve Mike Brown. Or worse, you deserve Bum Bright, though I think that Bum Bright’s ghost might run a team better than Bum Bright ever did.
By the way, Jimmy Johnson fell flat on his face when he was in total charge. The Dolphins were a 9-7 team the year before he took over. The season he left, they were still a 9-7 team. Talk about talent evaluation, the best offensive player Jimmuh drafted in Miami was probably Rob Konrad. He blind-squirrelled a few good defensive players with a shotgun approach. How can you not hit on a few gems when you spend 22 picks on defensive players in four drafts?
And we all know that Jerry won a Super Bowl two seasons post-Jimmy.

  35. VoxVeritas says: Oct 14, 2009 11:35 AM

By the way, Chapnasty. YOU are the one that didn’t know that the boards are inoperable at the higher level. I’m the one that had to inform you of that fact. Remember that the next time you try to bag on somebody about a lack of knowledge and understanding. I dropped more knowledge and understanding about the Cowboys and the NFL in general in the toilet this morning than you’ll ever possess.

  36. AirlineGuy says: Oct 14, 2009 12:05 PM

And for the rest of the story, the entire board was disconnected and U2 paid to have it moved up.
And the FUNCTIONING BOARD didn’t move up. They had to break it down. Where it is moved up to, it will NOT work as a scoreboard.
Everyone worry about their own team and their own stadiums. This is a NON-EVENT.
It is right up there with injury report omissions and other BS that Florio tries to champion.

    @ Vox
Where to begin. Taking on you is like a rite of passage on this site. I have waited because you were a Cowboys fan so I could appreciate you a little more. I have seen unlimited amounts of garbage spewed out of your mouth (or hands since its typed) with hardly an ounce of evidence ever. However I don’t say much because you know what, you are a Cowboys fan.
Obviously that isn’t the only reason people hate the Cowboys but it is certainly one of them and possibly the biggest. But Cowboys fans like you are also a main reason people hate them. If you would like I could run a quick poll to prove it.
Your comment on Jimmy Johnson proves you know very little about football if anything that isnt a story posted by eastman or any other cowboys website columnist. If you think that Jimmy Johnson fell on his face because he is in charge you are a moron. What would you say about Ditka when he went to New Orleans? I mean are you serious? Are you that football ignorant? And then to think that the 2 Superbowls won by the Cowboys after Jimmy left werent a direct result of him building that team? Come on man. Keep proving to all of your haters that you nothing about fotoball.
As far as me “spewing conservative garbage”, that is saved for political posts that Florio taunts us with and then a bunch of uneducated morons like you comment on without any bit of knowledge of the topic. I provide facts that prove their opinions wrong. Then, when people realize they are wrong, it turns hateful much like you. I don’t care if people belive what I do but when it comes to things that are backed by factual evidence they lose. If I am accused of being a racist, which I take very seriously, I defend myself. And will continue to do so. I anxiously await any of your responses. As does everyone else who has waited for someone to put you in your place.
Florio, I want to get paid for the hits I generate….

  39. chapnasty says: Oct 14, 2009 12:30 PM

    @ Vox
Sorry your second moron response was posted after I rebutted you…
I am going to do a little reasearch because I don’t see how the thing isnt inoperable at a higher height. It might now be as easy to view but I am smart enough to know that A TV that size can be seen from anywhere. You didn’t show any NFL understanding or understanding of anything really.

  40. Abe Froeman says: Oct 14, 2009 12:34 PM

A friend of mine went to the Giants/Cowboys game and said that board would be harder to see for those in the lower (better and more expensive) sections to see. Jones followed the rules and this thing was approved. If I were Jones I wouldn’t move it either. Also my friend said that during the game there are 6 people inside it. They go up 2 before the game, and come back down 2 after. And the thing has no plumbing. So I guess they have to use pecans.

Jerry was right, the league wanted it at 85 feet, he placed it 5 feet higher, and one lousy kicker in preseason hit it, and since, nothing has come close, go bitch about something else,……

With the exception of a few of the posters here, it needs to be made clear that while the current design of the video-boards does, in fact, allow for the screens to be lifted higher, the result is that the screens must be disconnected in order to do so.
The raising of the video-board for the U2 concert was planned a long time ago. Please read this Aug 28 ESPN article mentioning the raising of the video-board in anticipation for U2’s concert stage and how the screens are inoperable when raised.
