Gruden: Don't believe everything that's out there

Last night, Mr. Florio shared a report that linked Jon Gruden to the University of Louisville, a collegiate addition to the rumor mill that usually links Gruden to the Redskins and other NFL jobs that might be coming open at some point in 2009 or 2010.

Gruden appeared with Mike & Mike on the radio this morning, helpfully transcribed by Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post, to address those rumors.

“I’m really respectful of the people that have those jobs,” he said. “I
got a job. I just got fired from a job, I’m trying to hang on to the
one I’ve got, man. I’m gonna stick to my guns here and do my job, and
don’t believe everything that’s out there. Just do the best you can,
finish the job that you have, and that’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna
work hard and try to do better at the broadcast this Monday night.”

You’ll note that none of the above serves as a denial of interest in either direction on the Louisville job, the Redskins job or the night manager job at the local Dunkin’ Donuts, for that matter. One can be respectful of the person that has a job while still wanting it for themselves, especially if there are the right amount of zeroes on a check.

Gruden also touched specifically on the situations in D.C. and Buffalo while answering a question about what rumors of imminent firing can do to the guy who has the job.

“Oh, there’s no question it’s tough on your wife, your family,” Gruden
said. “It’s tough on your assistant coaches and their families. There’s
a lot of people on the support staff also that struggle with
negativity, and when you lose, unfortunately in the NFL or in major
college sports these days, there’s plenty of negativity to choose from.
That’s one of the things I really don’t like about this business.
There’s a lot of reports out there that are just trying to make news
instead of reporting news, if you want to ask me to be honest. But I
just hope that both of these teams get it together, because you won’t
find better people than Jim Zorn and Dick Jauron, I do know that for
sure.”

You also won’t find two people more likely to be unemployed, which is why, no matter how tasteless he finds the discussion, Gruden keeps getting questions about them in the first place.

He is dammed if he answers truthfully or falsely. This is truly where the media has to be respectful of all involved.

Try telling that to the Limbaugh dittoheads.

In a dream world …. as a Skins’ fan I would first like to say that I really hope Snyder keeps Zorn and fires his puppet Vinny Cerrato. Than I hope he hires a real gm, who could (with zorn) find an acceptible replacement at OC (this way Zorn wouldnt be stretched so thin). After hiring “a real gm”, Synder can take a LOOOOOOOOONG vacation (about 25 – 30 years should do) and leave the team and personel operations to these new, qualified employees.
In the real world we know that Synder is going to fire Zorn at the end of the year, and when he does that I really hope he hires Gruden. Gruden has shown that he doesnt need a ton of talent to be successful. He gets the most out his players.
And although Gruden may be a complete nut on the field but he has shown that he is a class act off of it.

Gruden is awesome on MNF. Much better than Kornholio. He should just stay where he is.

It would be nice if Davis could somehow talk Gruden into coming back to Oakland. I don’t see it happening though.

ESPN just reported that Gruden would have to forfeit 5 Million over the next 2 years should he take an NFL job. Sounds like he definately won’t be coaching in the NFL over the next 2 years. Sounds like these coaching rumors in college might have some legs. I have heard that his brother played at Louisville before. There really isn’t another program that I could see him going to other than Notre Dame. But, Charlie Weis isn’t going anywhere.

I was hoping someone was trying to talk some sense into Florio, Demaurice Smith, Roger Goodell and the liberals on this site. Should have known better since no one can penetrate their wall of Hope&Change! Disappointment? Yes I am!

That isn’t going to happen. The Danny would never survive the surgery required to remove Cerrato’s headquarters from The Danny’s hindquarters.

Why do I get the feeling that the author of this post is flying by the seat of his pants? Why would this same writer have scoffed at the idea of Howard Schnellenberger going to Louisville in the eighties after he had won a national championship?
Probably because he doesn’t know Louisville well and clings to the old stereotypes that things can never change in the tradition-bound world of college football.
Do some homework and then do a followup article when you have some facts. We enjoy the notoriety.

ya gruden is going to sit on that 5 mil for free, and plus he was never lead the mediA on in any way or hint them in any direction. i know ive read the st pete times the last ten years. and read grudens comments the last 6

  16. bigbillnocmd says: Oct 15, 2009 5:26 PM

news for you pimpfred. The 5 million he would have to forfeit is chump change to the 7 million/year he would be making as the next head coach of the skins.
If Vinny is still involved it will be all for nothing though. As long as cerrato is involved the skins will be dirt. Blackout with-in 2 years. They won’t be able to find 90,000 people that will pay to see anything Vinny Cerrato puts together in the near future n live action. D.C. is over the Snyder and Vinny show. they both make terrible decisions with Snyder’s worst one of ALL-TIME being the hiring of V.C.

If Gruden gets the night manager job at Dunkin’ Donuts I’m heading over there. He would run a tight franchise.

There is going to be a college opening after this year I hate to say it but looks like Mark Richt maybe on his last leg depends on how he finishes. So Gruden if this happen come on down to Athens GA and help GA with its Three Quarterbacks that would start any where else in country. We all know you love Quarterbacks especially if you have 3 potential great Quarterbacks with 3 different styles. Georgia is awaiting.
