Rumors fly of Josh Cribbs to Miami

Carlos “Big C” Holmes of the Dayton Daily News reports, citing an unnamed source, that the Dolphins are “showing interest” in trading for receiver/punt returner Josh Cribbs.

Cribbs has wanted a new contract for weeks and, despite some huffing and puffing about a holdout or a walkout, Cribbs has continued to honor his deal, despite a firm belief that owner Randy Lerner promised last December to adjust a contract that Cribbs has outperformed.

But Holmes omits one key factor regarding the team supposedly interested in Cribbs:  Why would the Dolphins want him?

They shouldn’t, unless Ohio native Ted Ginn would be moving from Miami to Cleveland.

The question then becomes whether Cribbs for Ginn would be a straight up deal, or whether a pick would have to be added on either side in order to even it out.

It’s an interesting question, and we’ll yield the remainder of our time to PFT Planet on a topic that, unlike the recent subject of sharp debate in the comments section of the site, actually relates to the game.

Did Cribbs put his home up for sale also?

  2. Hap says: Oct 15, 2009 4:27 PM

I need to know the source of these rumors to see if it’s a credible source. Name it.

  3. BX says: Oct 15, 2009 4:31 PM

I’m sure Cleveland wants Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Chris Johnson, or Adrian Peterson, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
If that deal went down straight up, Mangini is crazy. I wouldn’t trade Cribbs for less than Ginn and a 1st round pick. Cribbs is THAT important to the return game. When your offense is as horrid as Cleveland’s is, you need a guy like Cribbs.
Since when does Bill Parcells hand out big money to a kick returner? That being said, I bet they feel he could be a huge part to their Wildcat offense.
Now if the Fins wants to throw Ronnie Brown in the deal, then we’re talking.
That being said, I think Mangini really likes Cribbs, so I don’t see him going anywhere.

  4. Tiz says: Oct 15, 2009 4:31 PM

Now that Teddy Ginn is finally in a position were he has the opportunity to maybe succeed (Miami has a qb with an arm) I am hoping/speculating that the fins would be looking to use Cribbs to replace Cobbs on KR duties.

  5. Jay says: Oct 15, 2009 4:31 PM

Makes no sense. Why would Miami trade their top wideout for a guy who can only return punts and kicks?

  6. alpod says: Oct 15, 2009 4:32 PM

I think it would be a good deal for both sides. Cribbs is better than ginn now but ginn has way more upside.

  7. goetta-head says: Oct 15, 2009 4:34 PM

As a bengals fan that is welcome news

  8. Desides says: Oct 15, 2009 4:34 PM

“a topic that, unlike the recent subject of sharp debate in the comments section of the site, actually relates to the game.”
Then why did you write multiple posts about it, Florio?

  9. ButchD says: Oct 15, 2009 4:35 PM

I dont see why miami being interested in Cribbs means Ginn would go anywhere. Ginn hasnt been as special as hoped on returns, and giving that to Cribbs may help Ginns development as a WR. Cribbs has more rushing yards than receiving and would fit in more in the wildcat than as a receiver.
Cribbs for a pick makes more sense.

  10. DukeOfDway says: Oct 15, 2009 4:36 PM

Despite your faulty assumptions, the two players are not mutually exclusive. Ginn has not been at all impressive on returns. Since he is now (unfortunately) the Phins number one receiver, they really don’t want him handling returns anyway. Cribbs would improve the return game immensely, take return pressure off of Ginn, and add another potential speedy weapon to the Wildcat formation.
I’m not saying Ginn couldn’t be part of the deal. Nothing the Dolphins do surprises me anymore. But you make it sound like that’s the only way it makes any sense.
You should probably stick to reporting facts instead of pretending that your guesswork is gospel.

  11. Opie says: Oct 15, 2009 4:37 PM

What, the hell, does this have to do with Rush Limbaugh & George Soros or Liberals v. Conservatives?!?
Shouldn’t we be devoting more time to the factors that influenced ……oh……wait……..my bad, this isn’t NBC News is it?!?
I’d be interested to know if this is a real possible trade? Does it work out monetarily or will compensation have to be added or salary cap considerations made?

  12. bobbye says: Oct 15, 2009 4:39 PM

But Holmes omits one key factor regarding the team supposedly interested in Cribbs: Why would the Dolphins want him?
UUUHHHH Maybe because their KR P. Cobbs is out for the season, and both PR/KR are a joke

  13. Kalamari says: Oct 15, 2009 4:39 PM

What does Ginn have to do with Cribbs? – Ginn hasn’t returned a kick or punt all year -

  14. Pudge Heffelfinger says: Oct 15, 2009 4:42 PM

Patrick Cobbs had been Miami’s primary return-man, but he suffered a season ending knee injury against the Jets last week. Thus the need for Cribbs.
Ginn Jr. never became the great returner that they hoped he would be, but he’s not a bad receiver, so I doubt they would give up on him so soon.

  15. SirSuperSouthern says: Oct 15, 2009 4:42 PM

“Why would the Dolphins want him (Cribbs)?”
Why wouldn’t they? And why would you assume they’re danging Ginn for him? And why do Cribbs and Ginn both have a conspicuous extra letter on the tail end of their last names?
In all honesty, it’d make sense to trade Cribbs to anybody willing to give a bounty of draft picks for him. Cleveland is going to be doing some serious rebuilding in the off-season — why not be realistic and start now?
If I were a Browns season ticket holder, I’d act like a big-shot and donate them to some sorta kids’ charity and look like a hero and write it off (literally) as a good deed…

  16. daffy87 says: Oct 15, 2009 4:43 PM

Josh Cribbs is a class act on and off the field. A great team player. Never gets in trouble. I would hate to see him go, he is our best player. As for Ted Ginn, he might be a good WR…we saw with Henne that he is a legitimate deep threat so that makes sense and gives Derek Anderson someone to throw too down field. So I would understand the move from the Browns standpoint…but why would the Dolphins want rid of Ginn for Cribbs? To add another page to their wildcat playbook? Cribbs played QB at Kent State and he does throw…didn’t they just draft Pat White to do that? Kind of mind boggling from the Dolphins standpoint. I’m not sure it improves the Browns. We’d have to have Ginn start returning kicks for us. And Cribbs is a beast at covering kickoffs and punts. He isn’t a great reciever. I dunno if this were to happen I’d be angry … but only a little.

  17. raybin says: Oct 15, 2009 4:47 PM

So “rumors fly” = one guy no one’s ever heard of working for a small market media outlet citing one unnamed source?

  18. smo05d says: Oct 15, 2009 4:54 PM

You do realize that if the Browns do that they would be in last place even in the UFL?
More and more I like the idea of the bottom two teams becoming amateur teams and the top two amateur teams becoming pros.

  19. rasalas says: Oct 15, 2009 4:56 PM

Patrick Cobbs has been returning most of the kicks for Miami this season, not Ted Ginn. (Geez, Florio — do a little research.) And Cobbs was doing just average work. With Cobbs now out for the season, the Dolphins would be looking to replace him and juice up a return game that doesn’t pose much of a threat.
For the record, Davone Bess has been returning most of the punts for the Dolphins — again, not Ginn.

  20. phileborn says: Oct 15, 2009 5:01 PM

I just read an article on the Herald or the Sun Sentinel yesterday mentioning the fact that Miami would like to have a player on its roster with the sole purpose of returning kicks. This is NOT an attempt to swap players whatsoever.

  21. StevieMo says: Oct 15, 2009 5:19 PM

I like the leap of faith: Miami might be interested in Cribbs and therefore it must be for Ginn so this is how it’s all going to happen. That’s funny, Mike.
How about “Miami might be interested in Cribbs so Jennifer Lopez probably wants to buy the Brown so here’s how that’s going to work….”
Cleveland doesn’t need Ginn, but they need about 37 picks to rebuild that mess. I greatly doubt we’re talking anything more than a draft pick or two.
And, yes, he’d be dynamite on end-arounds with Brown and Williams in the Wildcat.

  22. Babylonian says: Oct 15, 2009 5:19 PM

I think this makes perfect sense for Miami. Cribbs is a former QB and has been taking direct snaps in Clevelands “Flash” package for years. If Miami has White, Brown, Henne, and now Cribbs all taking snaps, well lets just say that would be an impossible offense to prepare for.

  23. Jdog says: Oct 15, 2009 5:25 PM

Cribbs for Ted Ginn straight up? Seriously? Wow Florio, can you atleast make your ficticious reporting remotely plausible?
Cribbs is a better return man than Devin Hester and the stats from the past 4 years back that up.
The Browns already traded away a receiver who can’t catch. Why would they pick up another one?
Drugs are illegal Florio… say no to crack.

  24. RexRyan'sStressedLapband says: Oct 15, 2009 5:27 PM

First off, just like with the supposed “almost trade” of Braylon Edwards for Ronnie Brown, if the Fins deal Brown for anything other than a basement team’s entire draft for the next two years then I will seriously stop watching. Brown is the best player on the team, and one of the best players in the NFL. I am no expert, but I don’t see the Fins ever trading him. I know they better get his contract renewed ASAFP.
That being said, I would love to see Cribbs come to Miami, as long as it doesn’t cost us too much.

  25. BradyQuinnsCodPiece says: Oct 15, 2009 5:29 PM

    This is idiotic.
Its more like why would the Browns want Ginn????
Horrible trade for the Browns unless theres like a first round pick involved. Cribbs is that important to our team and Ginn blows.

  26. dybzinski says: Oct 15, 2009 5:29 PM

So they presumably don’t want to renegotiate with Cribbs but would trade him for an overpriced former #1 pick’s salary?
    That’s logical for this site.

  27. DanSnyder says: Oct 15, 2009 5:31 PM

Fins are a smashmouth team. Ginn does not fin into their offense. Ginn’s value just went up because the first time hes had a qb with an arm in his NFL career he had a solid game against the jets and beat darrell revis on a play. Ginn’s value is up, browns could use an explosive wideout, and the fins need a kick returner that could also be explosive in their wildcat. It’s not far fetched at all and if the fins feel like ginns value is high but deep down they really aren’t high on him then I believe parcells would do what he can to make the most of the situation.

  28. 2brauneyz says: Oct 15, 2009 5:32 PM

“a topic that, unlike the recent subject of sharp debate in the comments section of the site, actually relates to the game.”
I disagree. There’s been nothing sharp about that ‘debate’. Mike, your following is comprised mostly of morons. But because I actually understand the concepts of the 1st Amendment and ‘free market’, I’m thrilled you’re making a buck off these idiots.
For the morons: There is no free market in the NFL! It is a private business and closer to a monopoly than you are capable of grasping. How you folks make it through life is amazing!

  29. dwaynerudd says: Oct 15, 2009 5:33 PM

I assume Miami’s interest (if any) in Cribbs would be due to his wildcat potential, rather than strictly his returning abilities. The Brown’s have been trying half-heartedly and failing to use his potential for years. I think he could become a bit time offensive player with the Dolphins. The Browns would be chumps to take less than Ginn + a third round pick.

  30. RK says: Oct 15, 2009 5:47 PM

Why is this headlined ‘Rumors’? It appears to be one, from a market that isn’t the home for either team being discussed?
    Just Florio trolling for hits.

  31. Rmbay says: Oct 15, 2009 5:48 PM

Cribbs is not a polished receiver, and even though Ginn hasn’t yet totally proven he’s one either, he’s still quite a ways ahead of Cribbs in that regard, so a swap makes no sense for a Dolphins team with an already dubious receiving corp. It would have to be some other type of deal.

  32. iusedtobeteddybayer says: Oct 15, 2009 5:52 PM

BROWNS, FLOFLOFLORIO.You might mention the Browns.

  33. ebr362 says: Oct 15, 2009 5:59 PM

How bout the fins give pat white for cribbs?
The qb situation in cleve is a mess and if they want to give the wildcat a run, why not? We have thigpen as backup. I think the fins found out PWs hands might be too small for an nfl fball hense all the poor passes. Dump him now before anyone finds out.

  34. mistakebythelake says: Oct 15, 2009 6:01 PM

The Browns have tried to use Cribb’s for purposes other than kick returns…but the fact is, he ain’t that good at anything but kick returns. he’s great at that.
File Cribbs being traded under the “not gonna happen” category.

  35. longrodvanhungendong says: Oct 15, 2009 6:03 PM

I say trade em Pat White and Matt Roth for Cribbs. With Cribbs you would have a return man, so so WR and he can throw/run the ball from the wildcat.

  36. Chase says: Oct 15, 2009 6:10 PM

As a miami fan i would be pissed if the dolphins gave up ginn for cribbs. Ginn only seems like a flawed receiver because hes a speedster that has been playing for a QB that can throw the ball 30 yards. How do you think Desean Jackson would look if he was playing for a qb like Chad Pennington. Dolphins would want Cribbs strictly as a KR/PR and maybe to throw some screens to. Cribbs hasn’t really done anything as a WR.

  37. Foreverdolpfan says: Oct 15, 2009 6:14 PM

If this deal is made between the Dolphins and the Browns, the rest ot the AFC East opponents will start sweating bullets. This would be a tremendous upgrade (providing that we don’t how to give up too much) and it will only advance Miami light years ahead to where they want to go. Just think, with this transaction, the Dolphins could be the first NFL team in history to play a super bowl at home. Cribbs is an addition to this team that enhances the wildcat even more. In addition, we could use him as a receiver along with Ginn and one could only imagine the fear this would put in every defensive back in the league. This would bring back those glorious days of the Mark Brothers. Look out everybody, here come the wildcat and two receivers that will stretch of the football field from one end to the other!!!!!!!!!

  38. ^mile^high^ says: Oct 15, 2009 6:22 PM

Not sure why so many people hate on you Florio, you make me laugh…that’s why I keep reading (and so do they).

  39. Tim says: Oct 15, 2009 7:31 PM

Foreverdolphan I like your enthusiasm. Let’s just not get ahead of ourselves thinking this guy is a receiver. In 5 years in the NFL, Josh Cribbs hasn’t even had a total of 100 yards receiving in an entire season. In fact, he has 192 yards receiving for his career.

  40. The Coop says: Oct 15, 2009 7:44 PM

Here’s a better question – why would the Browns want Ginn?
And all you people commenting that all Cribbs can do is run back kicks are completely ignorant and should be posting on a topic they know nothing about. He’s not a very good receiver, but he’s the BEST cover man on kicks and punts in the NFL.
I’m not saying that makes him a Hall of Famer, but the notion that kick returning is all he can do is just plain wrong.

  41. FinFan says: Oct 15, 2009 7:47 PM

Pull the trigger! Trade speedy (no hands, no punt returns, no kick returns) Ginn for Cribbs.
And while your at it, give them Ginn’s Family!!!

  42. Browns_fan_in_therapy says: Oct 15, 2009 8:09 PM

Go ahead. Trade Cribbs and add the Browns to the UFL schedule. The attendance will match those games if you get rid of the best player on our team.

  43. BluntMastermind says: Oct 15, 2009 8:41 PM

Josh Cribbs for a second rounder and Joey Porter? Or two second rounders? I would love to have him on the team. If he was here then the Fins could end up winning the division since they’re only a game back now.

  44. callmecougar says: Oct 15, 2009 8:53 PM

I shaved my balls for this?

  45. daffy87 says: Oct 15, 2009 8:53 PM

People need to calm down. This was all over tv earlier. It was multiple teams who contacted the Browns with interest in Cribbs, not just Miami. And Kokinis told all of them that Cribbs isn’t on the block. That the Browns are trying to renegotiate his contract to keep him in Cleveland long term. People needs to simply relax and not believe every rumor that comes out. Cribbs is arguably the best player the Browns have and he isn’t going anywhere.

  46. lilmbm31 says: Oct 15, 2009 9:02 PM

Let me guess, Cribbs to the Jets for another back-up defensive player…I’m putting my house up for sale, ManJettie is embarrassing an embarrassing team.

  47. HBOilers24 says: Oct 15, 2009 10:24 PM

that would be the dumbest thing ever. Cribbs is a much better football player then Ginn. I wouldnt take Ginn and a 1st rounder for Cribbs.
Cribbs is pretty much the only guy who shows up to play every game this year. He’s not only one of the most dangerous return men in the league but top to bottom he’s the best overall special teams player bar none.
he shouldnt be anything more then a #3 WR on offense but his value on ST’s and to the team in general is huge.
cleveland will have the cap room to sign him to a big contract next year and that what i expect to happen.

  48. Dawgpound2009 says: Oct 15, 2009 11:56 PM

Cribbs to Miami for Chad Pennington ? Even with a busted up arm he can complete more passes than Derek Anderson ?

  49. BENACCI says: Oct 16, 2009 1:08 AM

So after reading all of the comments above I would say that the source is not reliable…. just my thought…
JOSH CRIBBS HOUSE IS NOT FOR SALE….

  50. ebr362 says: Oct 16, 2009 6:11 AM

I think ginn is going to surprise us now. Yea I know one catch does not make a recvr, but did you see the seperation on reevis? Reevis is touted as one of, if not the top cover man. Ginn had a few yards on him, it was classic burner wr, thats what we need, let camarillo/hartline/bess take care of the possession stuff. If Ginn builds on this, with hennes arm, mark my words we will end up loving him.

  51. finsbooyah says: Oct 16, 2009 10:41 AM

The only way I can see this happening is Matt Roth OR a mid-round pick for Cribbs. But, what no one has seemed to point out is that the Dolphins just signed Kory Sheets and they are excited about his ability as a kick returner. He’s even been taking snaps under center in the wildcat during this week’s practice
