Ray Ray gets fined 25K

Ray Lewis' late hit on Chad Ochocinco last Sunday may go down as the costliest of the year.

First, the head hunting maneuver cost Baltimore 15 yards and a first down during Cincinnati's game-winning drive Sunday.

Now the league has stepped in and fined Lewis $25,000 according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

Lewis will appeal the fine for a reduction, but Mort says that's unlikely to happen.  Skip to 3:00 of this video and you can see why.

Lewis sized Ochocinco up and went at his head despite the ball clearly being past him.

(Perhaps Lewis got fined extra because he also took out teammate Fabian Washington.)

A suspension is what should have been given out.

  2. dtrance says: October 16, 2009 11:41 AM

Whether he led with his shoulder or helmet is moot. It was a LATE hit. The fine is deserved.

I'm sure Ray Ray's checking account will survive.

Think it hurts him more to have lost to the Bengals on home turf, and that he had a big part in blowing the game.

    Dance it off, 52.

  4. Johnny Ryall says: October 16, 2009 11:43 AM

If it was anyone else, I'd say Lewis should be fined more. But with all of the crap that Ocho was slinging before the game, he had to know that he was going to get teed up at some point. The little b1tch got slapped.

He's made a career out of playing dirty... I'm only surprised he doesn't get fined more often.

Take it easy on Ray Lewis. It's not as if he has a history of being involved in double homicides. Oh, wait. Never mind.

  10. Cubanation says: October 16, 2009 11:50 AM

For the record Mike, there is only 1 "Ray Ray", and he plays for da U. And eventually, all of America will know of him for all the right reasons. But for now, Oklahoma knows who he is.

Ask about him next time you talk to Joe Rose. Ed Reed #2? We're hoping.

Waaaahhh….Waaaaahhh…cry me a river…..this guy still hits harder than most MMA fighters after 13 years in the league. In my opinion, negative comments about Ray Lewis simply show jealousy that he is not on your team.

Ochocinco is a pussy. Maybe it was late, but there is a reason for it. Sometime it is better to take the 15 yards and maybe a fine and have a pussy like Ochocinco be afraid to go down the middle for the rest of the drive or rest of the game. Unfortunately Bengals prevailed. But I love how Ochopussy gets up like he would fight RL. RL would mop the floor with Ochopussy.

  13. HATERADE says: October 16, 2009 11:53 AM

everybody gets a little dirty at times, especially in the nfl.

i like ray ray, he is a true future hall of famer.

with all that being said, i hope he never plays the game EVER, again!

I will never forgive him for wearing such silly, ugly clothes... and that freaking, disturbing, shitty @$$ hat he wore a couple of weeks ago on national television should had been enough to ban him from the nfl and all televised networks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. rize says: October 16, 2009 11:53 AM

Ray is such a classy guy... It is a shame something like this could happen to a guy who represents the game so well.

The way he produces such inspirational, nonsensical, gibberish in front of 10 NFL Films cameras before every game exemplifies the person he is.

  17. texasPHINSfan says: October 16, 2009 11:59 AM

yeah i have to think part of the reason this happened was because chad flaps his gums so much.

doesn't make the hit right though, the fine is fair.

countdown until ray complains publicly in 3, 2, 1....

  18. goetta-head says: October 16, 2009 12:02 PM

Actually, the little bitch got slapped with a big ass fine!

And word in tha nati is Carson knows thats what the Ravens do when the game is close at the end. They lose their cool and start stabbing....er...I mean, making stupid mental errors and thats why he threw it in to Chad.. To give the Ravens an opportunity to make their predictable mistakes.

    Good Luck this Year Chumps!

  19. Ravenmaniac says: October 16, 2009 12:02 PM

He did deserve to be fined, but $25K?

  20. mbbrazi says: October 16, 2009 12:03 PM

Ray Lewis has been real good at trying to mesh in since he got away with a murder charge back when. Then he stuck it to the Baltimore Ravens fans by trying to go to Dallas (literally texting Jerry Jones and begging for a job) and then thought he was a shoe in to go to the Jets because of Rex Ryan. I can't believe how much the Raven's resigned Ray Lewis for especially at his age-it's ludicrous. Most people don't realize that Rex Ryan protected Ray Lewis by calling defenses where Ray Lewis did not have to fly to the ball because he has little or no range. Ray Lewis's days as an NFL linebacker are numbered. He's gotten away with plenty and snow jobbed his way in and out of situations but the evidence is he basically sits in the middle hoping to read and try to cheap shot somebody.

  21. Tecumseh says: October 16, 2009 12:05 PM

  22. Hap says: October 16, 2009 12:06 PM

  23. Quagmire says: October 16, 2009 12:06 PM

Not that he ever was involved in, or witnessed a murder.

  24. ignoringthehaters says: October 16, 2009 12:07 PM

So talking smack warrants a cheap shot that was not only illegal but dangerous? Like the Ravens didn't talk any smack at all right? Ocho is a tough dude and notice he did not cry like Ray Lewis after the game. Ray never shuts up, he is always whining about something. I LMAO when he singlehandedly cost his team a victory. He is a dirty player and a murderer. Ocho is twice the player and twice the man Lewis will ever be.

  25. Hugh G. Rection says: October 16, 2009 12:10 PM

Questionable call in my mind - looks like Ray lead with his shoulder. I could have seen it go either way but have no real beef with him getting the fine. Tip money for Ray.
Agree with Johnny that if Ocho wants to taunt the bull, he'd better expect to catch the horns. Too bad it was a pivotal play for the Ravens.

    I loved the hit

  27. Crushitlong says: October 16, 2009 12:13 PM

This is the kind of hit that SHOULD take place every Sunday. The NFL needs to get back to being Football, not two hand touch below the waist, girl scouts selling cookies on a sunny day, brand of football the league is trying to legislate. Every mouthy a@# wide receiver should be drilled in the head until they learn to shut up and play ball. What we need is players like Ray Ray, George Atkinson, Jack Tatum and Lambert to lay down the law. If you don't want to be hit go play soccer

  28. shaunypoo says: October 16, 2009 12:14 PM

I would love to have had Ray on the team during his heyday, but this cheap stuff, and those who defend it, do not deserve a place in the NFL. I personally never thought that Ray was particularly dirty, but shots like this change minds. He may be losing it physically, but with big fouls in crunch time, it shows he is losing it mentally as well.

I thought he should have been ejected at the time, but that was more outrage speaking. Having seen the video a bunch and taken the time to really think about it, I now think he should have been ejected.

Now he is going to go to the media and complain how they protect the wideouts too much, too. If you can't beat'em, complain.

I am the farthest thing from a Baltimore/Cleveland (OK we can throw in Stealer as well) fan, but the fine was for two infractions, according to NFL.com:

"Posted: October 16th, 2009 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Baltimore Ravens, Ray Lewis
Ravens LB Ray Lewis was fined a total of $25,000 for actions during Sunday’s game against the Bengals, according to a league source. The fines were the result of two infractions during the game.
On a pass play, he unnecessarily kicked an opponent. Additionally, during the fourth quarter he unnecessarily struck a defenseless receiver (Chad Ochocinco).
The fines for those two actions amounted to $25,000."

  33. crex43 says: October 16, 2009 12:28 PM

I'm sorry - who are we referring to as the little bitch again? Because I'm pretty sure the guy that got beat in his own house and had to pay $25k for making a late cheapshot would be the bitch in this particular instance.

  34. realityhater says: October 16, 2009 12:30 PM

As a Steelers fan, watching Ray Lewis slam Ochocinco and then get penalized and fined for it is like watching Iran and Afghanistan get in a war. No matter the outcome, everyone's a winner.

  35. tuckerm83 says: October 16, 2009 12:31 PM

I don't like the Ravens much at all, and am not a really big fan of Ray Lewis either. My personal opinion is that the Ravens are a bunch of thugs :-) Still, can't argue with results from a defense that has been top notch for 10 years now. Anyway, this was NOT a LATE hit. He hit Ocho-Stinko with his shoulder, helmet to the side - TEXT BOOK hit. Both guys were in the air - it's not like anyone could've stopped themselves. If Chad had worried more about the catch instead of the impending hit he was going to take, this could've been REALLY ugly. Fortunately for him, he saw what was coming, and decided to protect himself as best he could rather than make an effort to catch the ball. Just because his helmet flew off doesn't mean Lewis should've been penalized OR fined.

  36. schism says: October 16, 2009 12:35 PM

I love both Ray and Chad, but htat hit was late, but Ocho was back on his feet as soon as he hit the ground. You can't hate on that.

  37. Sicknature says: October 16, 2009 12:35 PM

  39. Mikebrown_suckit says: October 16, 2009 12:42 PM

I agree the nfl has gotten really bad with protecting people. It will never be like the old days, because the guys playing now are twice the size and hit twice as hard than back in the day. Everyone sayin chad deserved the hit are idots. The ball had already hit 10 yards past and he still hit him. Does chad talk too much? Yeah, but to say he deserved that is stupid. Your just bitter he is killing it this year and the Bengals are in 1st place and no one on the police blotter like everyone tries to bring up. That easily could of ended his season. Say what you will, but chad got right back up and oh yeah the Bengals won the game.

Doesn't Matter, the Vikings are about to put the steak in this teams heart. I hate to say it because I like Ray Lewis and the Ravens but they are about to lose 3 straight. There is no way Joe Flacco is going to beat our Defense at home. Better yet, there is now way Brett Favre/Adrian Peterson/Percy Harvin lost to this defense at home. Vikes Win by 10. Ravens try to keep it close, but cant run the ball there for relying on 2nd year Joe to beat our D...NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! Vikes go 6-0 and take the trip to SH*TSBURG and beat those POS Steelers! 43. Harm City Homer says: October 16, 2009 12:46 PM

That was a bull job call.

Ray could not track the ball and the WR, and Chad jumped up like he had a chance to catch a pass in Ray's area.

Ray sized him up and delivered a legal hit with his shoulder as Chad was on the way back down. By that time Ray had his helmet behind Chad's 5 on the back of his jersey, but the shoulder to shoulder contact along with the angle forced Chad's helmet to fly off. That is the only reason it only looked that bad. It did look bad, but on NFL.com they have a still photo of the point of contact, and although the argument could be made it was late or Ray should have known the all was uncatchable (even though the WR jumped p and reached for it) the bottome line is that was a clean football play for the last 50 years, but now it is a flag and a bull job fine insult on top of the game changing injury. Not to Ocho, who jumped up ready to act like he was going to fight, but to the Ravens D who were hit with 15 yards and a free first down for what should maybe be a fine, but never be a flag.

The hit is only unneccecary if Chad did not come down with the ball, but it is not very often that a WR jumps up and exposes themselves on an uncatchable pass.

Ochocinco explained better than any video could though on his own webcast, which was hillarious (although in need of editing) but true.

As long as Wrs come accross the middle and jump up for the ball, they are going to get hit, unless we are just going to start playing Soccer or field hockey out there.

That's a joke lewis left his feet the same time OchoStinko left his and they hit, while BOTH were still in the air! There was no time to "size Ochostinko up" it's instinctive for Ray and any NFL defender! This thinking is the same type of thinking that's created these stupid rules in the first place. Ray put a hit on him just like he should have. If mr. stinko, who the nfl is so worried about, would actually buckle his chin strap the hit would not look as bad as it was. Considering Mr. Stinko has been laughing ever since the hit I'm sure he's ok.

I don't want to see anyone get hurt but the protect the players and pass interference calls DEFINITELY make officials look a lot like NBA refs with these very subjective calls. Does the NFL really want the refs to be considered in the same sentence as NBA refs, which are the worst in professional sports!

Can't wait to see how many roughing calls the Ravens have this weekend against Lord Favre! Touching that old man on the foot will bring about a 15 yarder in today's NFL.

    -------------------------------

Yes, I do feel the same way about Wines Hard... he seems to be the first in line to lay people out from behind, but the instant he gets hit, he wants a flag immediately.

He's a pretty good #2 receiver, but nowhere near a #1 receiver, which is why in the years without Plax or Santonio there, he was pretty average in terms of yards. His highest yardage AND TDs in a year ever was 2002, the same year Plaxico had his highest yardage of his career.

Funny how fans love extremely violent and physical sports then criticize players for being too violent and/or call them "dirty".

What Ray did is part of the game. It's sad but true. It wasn't smart at that time of the game but just as Ocho said afterwards in his press conference, I'll think twice about going over the middle of the field again....

for all you idiots that dont understand it, look at baseball as a perfect example! A pitcher beems a batter to brush him off the plate and/or send a message... is it dirty? maybe, but its part of the game and theres a reason for it...

Ray has the respect of the entire league. Coaches, players, owners, everbody! Even ocho has so much respect for him that he didn't want him too be fined... pretty impressive to have all that love and be a "dirty" player huh? idiots!

First off. Chad and Ray are friends. Ray has been putting hits on soft players for years. And about the murder charges you all have to let that go. Yeah Ray was the only one found guilty for obstruction of justice. The guys who allegedly stabbed the two guys were found not guilty because the guys who were stabbed tried to rob them. Self defense.

  54. NelsonLRodriguez says: October 16, 2009 1:30 PM

  55. st.michael says: October 16, 2009 1:31 PM

You guys calling Ocho a little bitch should watch the video again. He took that cheap shot, then stood up and got right back in Ray's face.

Ray Lewis was still stunned and dazed. Looks like Ray Lewis is the bitch...and a murderer.

  56. frox says: October 16, 2009 1:33 PM

Ray has no history whatsoever of being a dirty player. That is what makes him such a great player. While a lot of guys fly around out of control, he has always hit people cleanly and to my knowledge, has never been fined. The picture in the link clearly shows he did not hit him helmet to helmet. Could he have avoid the shot? Yes. Does he deserve a fine? Sure. I would rather see the fine than the game altering penalty but this is the NFL now and it's a league for pussies.

Oh and for all the people saying he has a history of playing dirty, let us know one other example. Was the clean shot on Mendenhall last year that broke his shoulder dirty?

People will always hate Ray, but those that actually watch him play on a week to week basis, and true football fans, know the guy is simply a great football player that has the type of passion for the game that few have any more.

And good call by itlstl7, Ray does have the respect of the entire league. Even Ocho said it was not a cheap shot and to my knowledge, he has never been on the dirty player list with Rondey Harrison and Hines Ward.

  57. chowdahead says: October 16, 2009 1:35 PM

Ray Ray should get fined, all he does is run his mouth when things dont go his way....not to mention do we not remember he SHOULD NOT be playing he is a murderer. 58. TuffGonG says: October 16, 2009 1:40 PM

  59. htaylor90 says: October 16, 2009 1:42 PM

Its a shame, he should be suspended for the helmet to helmet contact.

  60. footballrulz says: October 16, 2009 1:46 PM

I haven't even seen the play but the fine was undeserved. He got flagged, team got penalized and likely lost the game because of it. If it weas that bad he should have been ejected. In the Old NFL that would have been the end of it & should have been the end of it in today's NFL.

Players should not be fined unless they have been warned previously that they will be fined the next time they are called for a certain play or if the penalty was flagrant & caused injury.

It's football. It's a violent game that these guys have been playing their whole lives. They deserve to be able to play football. If they wanted to play soccer they would be in shorts. Goodell is ruining this league. These arbitrary, inconsistent fines are BS and have no place in the game.

  61. goetta-head says: October 16, 2009 2:08 PM

Ravens are going to shock you at home. AP is not running on the Ravens. As much as I hate them, the Ravens are not allowing themselves to be dominated on the ground two straight weeks. Just not happening. Much like Polamalu, Ed Reed's style of play fits right in with with Favre's gunslinging style of play. Then on to next week. You're not winning at Heinz Field. Game. Set. Match. Unlike many arrogant superstars, Ray learned from his mistake of hanging with the wrong crowd and he has been squeaky clean for ten years - an exemplary citizen. As for you people who say Ray plays dirty, you know nothing about Ray or football. You confuse sheer toughness and playing with extraordinary energy and abandon with playing dirty. Ray is an extraordinary football player who will knock your dick in the dirt but he is NOT dirty. Don't take my word for it- ask CHAD.The fact that he can deliver a hit like that in his 14th year speaks volumes for his toughness and tenacity. Quite simply, Ray is one of the top 5 defensive football players who ever lived. He's not a murderer. He's not a thug and he's not dirty. 69. bspurloc says: October 16, 2009 3:09 PM

It was a legal hit just a few seconds late......

However at least Ray knocked him on his ass like a man instead of tripping him like flozell the fatty fat.

Let us see flozell try to hit someone like that so his stomach follows through and pops off his own head.

Why would they put meat in its heart? Its "stake" you moron.

I'm from Pittsburgh, so I say "bring it" to Vikes.

  71. bspurloc says: October 16, 2009 3:13 PM

Yeah for real stop crying about Ray lewis....

There should be more dudes out there knocking people on their asses and less people like TO who cries 24/7 makes no effort for the extra yard.....

There should be weekly stories with top 10 pussies of the week show, dudes making no 2nd effort to stop interceptions making no effort to get that extra yard making no effort to complete a tackle.

i don't think the case for a fine should be based on whether the hit player was injured or not.

the fact was the hit was late and on a "defenseless" receiver going over the middle. the fact is that hit could very well cause injury. everyone is lucky it did not this time. but just because it did not, doesn't mean it warrants no fine.

hopefully ray lewis will make his presence felt on the field in better, safer ways. you don't have to make big-time hits on defenseless receivers across the middle to be a good LB. ray knows that. he was trying to get away with something and just got caught, that's all.

What does "Crines Ward" even mean? Do you mean "Crimes Ward" or "Wines Hard"? If you are going to slam a player from the steelers at least have it make some sense. Oh yeah, you're a Raven's fan so you are probably having a hard time making the switch from crayons to a keyboard.

  74. Attitood says: October 16, 2009 3:22 PM

    Haters......get a life!

#1 Ray would never kick a player and even idiots here know that.

#2. Stop with the damn thug talk. The man was never even charged.

  75. CurseofBoJackson says: October 16, 2009 3:29 PM

"Ray was never convicted of murder!!!!" Right, neither was OJ

"Chad's a pansy!!! HE talks SOOOO much, he deserved to get blasted a full second after the play was over by someone who claims to be his friend!!!!"

"You all want Ray to be on your team, and would never say this stuff to his face! You all have the same man crush on him that I do, admit it!!!!!"

"Chad's lucky he didn't make it to Ray, he would have......."

what, killed him? HAHAHA, couldn't resist

My god, this is really sad, the hit was BLATANTLY late and BLATANTLY helmet to helmet, Ray is a great LB, yes one of the greatest to ever play the game, but guys, blow softer, it's pretty obvious. And to do some speculating, if Roy Williams blew Derrick Mason up like that, the same people would be on here "crying a river" just like those of us with two good eyes are doing right now.

  76. Ravenmaniac says: October 16, 2009 3:31 PM

Gbalt.....nice!!! The sad part about it is that you put together a truthful post and now steeler fans galore will start coming out of the woodwork to talk even more smak.
The problem is that their team has women beaters, pot-heads, etc...
So when this starts, just remind them that they have a rapist on their team and then stand back because they will begin telling you that big jen is not guilty...blah-blah-blah....Which we should all accept, but none of them can acknowledge the fact that Ray did not commit murder and was not charged with murder and has never had any other problems on or off the field!

  77. GRpatriot says: October 16, 2009 3:44 PM

Tsk, Tsk Ray! Now you have something to complain about!
The big Bad Raven defense! The refs are not fair. They like Brady more than Flacco. Well, considering this is only Flacco's second year, maybe the refs don't know him yet!
Ray, next game just corner all the Refs and throw thier flags into the stands, like 2 years ago!

Whining, makes your D seem lame. Some of the best talent around on that side of the ball. How about a little disciplane and restraint? Think first, will this cost the team? If the answer is probably, stop it. If I were the Ravens coach, I'd start fining players in addition to the league! I'd also tell them any penalty on D that cost us a win...start packing your bags, you're heading to trade land. Otherwise, this will continue and the playoffs will be unattainable. (stupid penalties will not be tolerated)
Teams that win regurally, don't beat themselves! Encroachment, offsides, roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct are unnesseccary and cost games...

Wow. Your jokes keep getting better.
Has anyone ever met a foreigner who has little grasp on the English language and tries to tell a joke? Now you know what its like.

PLEASE tell me you are a product of the Baltimore school system. I have a $10 bet riding on your answer.

I love how everyone brings up hines ward when there is a good solid hit in the NFL. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Hines is a possesion reciever that goes across the middle every game. He gets hit more than any reciever in the league, usually gets up smiling not whining for a flag. Just because he knocks the snot out of linebackers that outweigh him by 50lbs because they do not know how to keep their heads on a swivel, does not make him a cheap shot player. He hits people the same way he gets hit.

And to say that Hines is not a #1 reciever is ludicrus. the man leads the steelers in every recieving stat there is.....if that doesnt signify a #1 than I dont know what is. jealousy is a sin

  82. Ravenmaniac says: October 16, 2009 4:56 PM

Tleg...I am not arguing hines is a #1 receiver and he is a good receiver! He does a have an NFL rule named after him as well!!

reality...I am going to stop now...once again you got me. you the man...

  83. AugustusMcCrae says: October 16, 2009 5:23 PM

Ray Ray has to pay pay, I guess. The Ravens should fine him, too, for the assist to Cincy.

The Ravens let people in their heads too easily sometimes. (See Hines Ward.)

At least we're not Redskins fans!

  84. JJohnson says: October 16, 2009 5:34 PM

Kick him out of the game and dock him his entire salary for that particular game. 25Ks is chump change to those guys.

    --------------------------------------------------

What a DUMB statement! Lewis would hit like a girl in MMA and MMA guys not like him in football. Two different worlds max,I know.

Does this make Ray Ray pissed for the Vikes Sunday? Hope so. My Vikes are getting little respect but you will all see who the smashmouth team is Sunday. Tired hearing Ravens so physical . Like Allen,AD,Williamses,Henderson and Winfield not? Please. Were gonna punch the bully right in the mouth. Undefeated going to Pitt.

  86. Vox's Mommy says: October 16, 2009 6:15 PM

Percy, where aren't the Vike's getting any respect? Just asking. Their D-Line is crazy, and they have a good secondary. Favre is still a beast, and you have the best RB in the League. Don't know where you're not getting any respect from (other than from GB fans LOL). I hope the Vike's win, but I hope the Ravens beat you up just a little. It's a bummer that this game is the same time as the Steelers game. Even though this game will probably be better I'm not going to miss my Steelers. It should be an exiciting game nonetheless.

  87. PervyHarvin says: October 16, 2009 6:34 PM

Vox, LOL Maybe I have been in the trenches with the Packer fans too long! Every day a war. Still hear a lot of the Vikes have played soft teams and need to prove they are good. First of all,I don't care who you play,to go 5-0 in the NFL takes good team execution. I do respect the Ravens, think that a win over them would give us more cred. I do like Ray Lewis too, like tough players. Should be good. Hoping to come to Heinz Field 6-0! Glad Favre gets some good practice with Ed Reed(a player I highly admire,a freak) before facing your freak Troy!

  88. tleg81 says: October 16, 2009 7:02 PM

Ravenmaniac, that comment was meant for bleedgreen not you, I dont believe you said anything about Hines being a #2 at best.......and about the rule, get over it bro, crack backs are still allowed and if rivers didnt have a glass jaw there would be no rule made......I will not even begin to debate recievers and the value having a blocking reciever has on your team because you wouldnt know.

  89. comment_submission_error says: October 16, 2009 8:12 PM

Tom Cable should get fined for breaking that assistant's jaw. Either that, or Lewis should be prosecuted for that hit on Chad Cerocero. It was a sweet shot, though. That example of perfect timing guarantees Lewis a spot on Dancing With the Stars after his career is over.
