Browns won't be trading Joe Thomas

There has been a surprising amount of fan speculation that the Browns are willing to trade left tackle Joe Thomas.

Possibly sparked by the fan speculation, some league insiders have been to take the possibility seriously.

Per multiple league sources, it’s highly unlikely to happen.

For starters, we’re told that coach Eric Mangini “loves” Thomas (not in that way — but that possibility would have made for a compelling episode of Playmakers . . . not that there’s anything wrong with it).

More importantly, there’s typically only one way to get a 10-year left tackle:  through the first round of the draft.  Few teams that have one will be willing to give him up — especially when he’s only in the third year of his contract.

That said, any player could be had for the right offer.  To get Thomas, however, someone would have to absolutely blow the Browns away, possibly with a Herschel Walker-type package of picks and/or players.

    Great sentence Florio.

Weird. I read every browns blog, sports page, rss feed, you name it – this is the first I’ve heard anything about Joe Thomas mentioned in a possible deal. I mean we’ve all seen the Cribbs stuff, Quinn’s house, etc…not a mention of Thomas anywhere. Please key me in to the fan speculation to which you refer. A link would do.

You have got to be kidding me. More bogus rumors debunked by PFTs crack team?? You sure this wasn’t ghost written by that hack Curran?
    This ship be sinking Florio.

What is this ? The fifth grade ? This entire “paragraph” is stupid.

I would like to see the link to the fan forum where these rumors are located. FYI, Joe Thomas at 24 is more valuable than Herschel Walker at 27.

This rumor has been started by genius Packer fans who think that a straight up trade, Joe Thomas for Aaron Kampman, could easily be done. Kampman had one good year and 2 other above average seasons, so using Ted Thompson logic, that makes it a fair trade, with the Browns maybe having to kick in a 2nd round pick.

    Florio,
I’ve read your site since it’s inception, and this is probably in your top 5 of worst “news stories” ever. Seriously, I haven’t read this anywhere. This is amateur armchair QB blog stuff right here.
With the whole Packers rumor, why would they trade Kampman to another 3-4 team when the reason he needs to get out of Green Bay is because he’s not very good in the 3-4?
Thomas is going nowhere. Despite the Browns being terrible, he’s 24 years old. No way they let him get away.

Yeah, you guys want to know where these stupid rumors started. By all of those STUPID packer fans suggesting they trade Kampman for Thomas (yeah, that seems like a good straight up deal) on PFT…on Vikings threads. They are seriously DELUSIONAL. Most like the rest of the crap they post!!!

Tecumseh — That might be the funniest comment I’ve seen on PFT. Bravo.

So it’s news when some fan says something moronic on a local talk radio show? Joe Thomas is a top 3 left tackle in the league, he’s the best player the Browns have…he”s not going anywhere.

    Florio,
Your “league insider” is you. You also started the “fan speculation.”
    From last Sunday’s chat,
9:51pm ET – Do you think the Packers will make the playoffs this year?
They need to trade for help on the offensive line. I’d be doing everything I could to get Joe Thomas from the Browns.

  15. GoBrowns19 says: Oct 18, 2009 9:23 PM

This isn’t even a story. A few disgruntled fans wrote to various media outlets WHY DON’T THEY JUST TRADE THOMAS TOO! and the national media took it and ran. THAT is the true story. You guys are disgusting.
