The Saints put nearly 50 on the board in each of the first two games of the 2009 season, before winning the next two with a far more modest output.
After a week off, they're back to flirting with 50.
And it came against the team previously regarded by many as the best in the conference, if not the league.
So in two games against the two best teams from the supposedly best division in the NFL, the Saints have put 96 total points on the board. So before anyone starts talking again about the NFC East being the top quartet of teams in the NFL, that fact can't be ignored.
With 369 yards passing and four touchdowns, Drew Brees is back at the top of the MVP list. And by holding Eli Manning under 200 yards (and also somehow getting under his skin), defensive coordinator Gregg Williams remains near the top of the "A" list for head-coaching jobs in 2010.
Still, the Saints can't afford to get comfortable or complacent. The Falcons remain only one game behind in the NFC South, and the two teams still play each other twice. The Saints also have to play the Patriots, the Dolphins, and the Cowboys.
For the Giants, the question is whether they can recover from the blow to their presumed invincibility. They did a great job of building a 5-0 record after having last year's No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs evaporate on a Sunday afternoon in January against the Eagles. (Other teams haven't been able to recover so quickly . . . like the Titans.)
Still, the challenge was to secure home-field advantage again, especially with three dome teams destined to invade the postseason party. For now, it appears that any rematch between the Giants and Saints will be played back in the Superdome. And that reality could be enough to get some members of the team to begin accepting the possibility that this year might not be their year.

The lack of adjustments on defense at half time bothers the hell out of me. Sheridan has to prove to me he can "Coach" this defense. Rolling over the previous teams does nothing in terms of my confidence in his abilities.
Oh Florio your poor poor Giants...
The only people who thought the Giants were the best team in the NFL, NFC or NFC East was the mainstream media (which you are now a part of Florio, even if your a VaGiant love at heart anyway).
The one thing that baffles me is Sheridans scheme yesterday - he did the exact same thing that McDermott and the Eagles did - mostly 4 man rush and drop everyone into coverage - and ended up with the exact same result (how about this stat for ya - Kevin Kolb did better against the Saints the ShEli did...but don't worry, Eli is elite, just not as elite as Kevin m'fn Kolb).
Eagles fans expect stuff like yesterday, because we all know we'll be there in January. Doesn't matter how we get in, as long as we get in. But people are so quick to forget, or maybe they just don't follow it all closely enough - the Eagles put up a few stinkers every year, and struggle against teams they should beat every now and then (Cincy and the 2nd Skins game last year for example). It's hilarious how people assume that the Eagles are done, and they won't be able to beat the Giants or any of the other East teams; yesterday was typical Andy Reid Eagles - just when you start showing them the love, they slap you in the face; and just like every other year, when all hope is lost, and it looks like the season is over, the Eagles will become the hottest team in the league. Peters and Herremans will be back so there won't be all this left side pressure like we saw yesterday. I give credit to the Raiders for mixing up their scheme and going to zone and blitz when they mostly just did man coverage in all the other games this season.
well said NZYME. this loss is on the coaching staff on both sides of the ball. gilbride panicking and abandoning the run which was rolling, 40 yard passes on third and a foot, and Sheridan looks like craps his pants every game. no adjustments, nothing. dont tell me our personnel are that bad.
The Giants got blown out by the Cowboys and Packers the first to games of the 2007, and guess where they went on the road to beat both teams.
I'm not worried about New York, the Saints were pumped up and rested. They played out of there minds. Bree was insanely good yesterday.
New York will be fine.. they just need to get healthy on defense.
The Ants could have made all the adjustments in the world and it would not have mattered. The Saints are an O juggernaut and the D, under Williams, is right on their heels.
In short, the Saints have a highly talented and experienced team and that is hard to beat no matter what adjustments are made.
Geaux Saints!!
"And that reality could be enough to get some members of the team to begin accepting the possibility that this year might not be their year."
Or, just maybe, they will remember that Minnesota took them to the toolshed near the end of the 2007 season, Florio and all the rest of the media declared them dead, and they went on to win the Super Bowl. The Saints won. They deserved to win. It's October. The one game that really matters is in February. If NY has to play NO in Superdome in playoffs, I would like to remind Florio that over the past two years NY's record on the road in the playoffs is perfect. The game they lost was at home. Kudos to NO. Pardon me if I'm not prepared to declare the season dead over one game, especially since Philly and the Skins lost as well. I never expected NY to go undefeated nor has any Giants player said they would be undefeated. It's one loss. I'll worry if Zona wins by 20 plus. Otherwise, it was a solid butt whooping and NY moves on to the next game. Not the end of the world.
Why do all Giant threads end up with Eagle fans posting and whining?
"Eagles fans expect stuff like yesterday, because we all know we'll be there in January. "
Huh? Yeah, another Superbowl win I guess.
DildoBaggins says: "Eagles fans expect stuff like yesterday, because we all know we'll be there in January."
Notice how the Dildo didn't say "February". Even the scummiest of Philthy's fans know better than to say they will be there in February.
Simply put the Giants are overrated. The Cowboys dominated them and would have blown them out except for the fact that Romo cracked under pressure again. And other than that game they've beaten the Raiders, Redskins, Bucs, and the Chiefs. They finally played a decent team in the Saints and got their asses handed to them.
Eagirls, Giants and Skins all lost yesterday, gotta love it. I will say I do think the Giants are a good team but the Eagirls and Skins are what I thought they were, terrible....Lose to KC and Oakland??? Laughable. It was a good week for my Cowboys....
"So in two games against the two best teams from the supposedly best division in the NFL"
Highly debatable.
hochuli question
how can ball come loose from your hand BUT you still are considered in possession?
east96street
this is sheridan NOT spagnuolo of 2007! remember when tim lewis was there?
yes 4 giants starters were out- phillips, ross, canty and boley. and they need 3 of them back bad with phillips is lost for year. cc brown a terrible signing by reese. phillips should have been stopped by giants doctors instead of letting him play hurt for 2 games and breaking him down.
BTW, one of the worst officiated games i have ever seen
"how can ball come loose from your hand BUT you still are considered in possession?"
When it's still pinned against your body by your arm.
I can't believe Tony Romo turnovers helped the team lose another big game to a...oh wait, never mind.
Reality sets in....The Giants arent the best team in the universe. And how about them skins and eagles?
All you dirtbags were on here last week TRASHING the cowboys for slipping by the chiefs, and thats fine, but come on here now and explain to us what exactly happened to the eagirls against the worst team in the history of the NFL?????????? Please do tell. I cant wait to hear this load of bullshit.
Skins fans, even though i hate each of you personally, I will say this-Losing yesterday might have been the best thing you could've done. The sooner zorn is gone the sooner you guys start rebuilding. Be glad the chiefs crushed your heart and soul yesterday. hahahahahah.
Giants fans-I have a feeling you guys are in for a roller coaster year. Jacobs is the second best RB on your team and no longer the nightmare runner he was the past two seasons. Sh-eli is the same average passer he always has been, david carr looked as good yesterday....hahahahaha. And how about that vaunted defense????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Those bitches got SMOKED yesterday.....Where were tuck and osi? Did they think yesterday was a bye week???
All i can say to the lot of ya is-bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahs892wuefnj02

but when it was "loose" he was out of bounds!
ie- it was loose before it was pinned!
--------------
all the browns game comparisons this year were wrong except this one yesterday
1- Giants unbeaten heading into that week 6 game
2- On the road
3- apply no pressure on QB
4- GET BLOWN OUT by Saints as they did by Browns
BUT they rebounded last year after that game!
i mean 'down' not out of bounds.
Sheridan is no Spagnuolo... that's for sure.
i dont understand, from non giant fans why eli is to blame for this and now since they lost a game its "hahahahahahahahahha he sucks" or how hes being compared to kolb's game vs the saints. kolb threw the ball over 50 times and had 3 picks. eli's turnover both the fumble and int came from missed assignments and picking people up. Bradshaw both times didnt pick up the defender, he got hit on his blind side and the pick happened when they hit him and his throwing arm while he was releasing. they lost a game in october, the fact cowboy and eagle fans are on here blasting the giants is a joke. last i checked eli doesnt play S and CB...this is the first week all their injuries are setting in. ross, canty, sintim, boley phillips. the main reason we got boley were for games like this.
giants are LITTLE
saints are disgusting
I'm still laughing.......
Cowboys move one spot closer to the east crown.
Thanks saints and raiders for the ego crushing you did yesterday. It was much needed.
How much fun would a Saints-Patriots Super Bowl be?
The Saints had 2 weeks to prepare and were healthy. The Giants were missing their #2 corner, their best coverage linebacker and a key D-lineman. Even with that against them a couple inches here and there and the refs not redefining pass interference or possession (Ed Hock on the hot seat yet?) on two awful calls the Giants could have won the game (as the two calls cost 14 points).
The NFL has been very, very kind the New Orleans the last few years. I'm sure its pure coincidence that all the New York teams were played against in summer?. THey only have 1 cold weather destination in their entire schedule. Pathetic.
Plenty of people said the NFC North is the toughest division this year, at the beginning of the year. Time to jump on the bandwagon.
NFC Least is past its prime. I'd take the AFC North over NFC Least. Bears and Vikings both won games against their AFC counterparts. Lions beat up on Steelers, but lost.
Look for the Lions to win a non division game in convincing fashion this year. Once Stafford is healthy and they play 4 quarters of ball instead of 2-3 they'll start winning.
"eli's turnover both the fumble and int came from missed assignments and picking people up."
Right, because only Eli Manning has to deal with teammates not doing as they should have done.

--------------------------------------------------that was to that weird eagles rant up top, how that game was eli's fault and how kolb is better and the eagles knew they were going to lose against the raiders and now will coast into jan. That was in response to that dope going on a manning rant.
Despite rolling over all 3 NY teams, and handing the G-whiz boyz heads to them, the excuses just keep rolling. Accept the fact like a man. Your "NFC Best" defense got run over by a far superior team. The Saints didn't get "hot" yesterday. They've been playing at this level all season long.
Ya know I really, really hope the Giants come back to the dome for the NFC CG so the Saints can humiliate them AGAIN! Losers.
WE Sucked we lost but we lost to the Saints not the Raiders nor KC
It was an eye opener we will bounce back and get better
The Cowturds and the Egals are sub par the redheads well come on now how many 0-and what ever teams have they made right this year ?
Zaggs:
I am sorry, but take off the glasses and watch the game.
"...the refs not redefining pass interference or possession (Ed Hock on the hot seat yet?) on two awful calls the Giants could have won the game (as the two calls cost 14 points)"
Just before the Manning fumble the Saints appeared to score a TD with Fred Thomas on 4th and goal, according to people on the sidelines in looked like Thomas broke the plane of the goal line with the ball in his left hand, but there were too many bodies to see it from the camera angles. Did you also notice that the Saints had a pick 6 from Manning that was called back by a roughing the passer call? The Giants went on to score on that drive. A 14 point swing that could have gone to the Saints. Most QB's in the NFL don't get that call unless their last name happens to be Manning, Brady and maybe Brees. But I don't think the Giants touched Brees all day so there was no chance of a roughing the passer call.
The facts are that the Saints took their foot OFF the accelerator in the second half and could have probably scored 60 and maybe even 70 points on the Giants if they had tried. How many people would have been complaining about the Saints running up the score if they had laid 70 points on the Giants?
The facts are that the Saints dominated the game on Offense and Defense and a couple of special teams kickoff returns kept the Giants in the game. (If you call 48-27 being in the game.) But, I guess you have to expect a couple of good kickoff returns when you have to kickoff 8 times during a game because you scored 7 TD's. The Saints gunners on coverage were a little winded. The way the Saints offense was playing, they would have needed a second string set of gunners to help cover the kickoffs because they were scoring TD's so easily.
The Giants are a very good team and hopefully these two teams will meet again. I juts hope it is at the Superdome. This game gets played 10 times the outcome is 5-5 or 6-4 either way.
And to the person complaining about the Saints schedule being easy the last few years..... You may have forgotten that the Saints played an entire season away from home one year and one of those games was a Saints "Home Game" that was played against the Giants in Giants Stadium. The Saints have also lost a "Home Game" that they played in London. Let me know when the Giants get that "Home Game" in London in the next few years and I'll give you some sympathy. But, I forgot about the no "London Home Game Rule" for the "special" teams, like The Giants, Cowboys and Patriots. Don't expect to see them playing any "Home Games" in London anytime soon!
Bob S. says: "this is sheridan NOT spagnuolo of 2007!"
First, spags D lost the first two games of 2007 and there was the Minnesota blowout. Second, they are essentially running the same schemes. I realize anyone, such as yourself, that cannot form simple sentences, would not be intelligent enough to recognize that. But if you listen to interviews with the defensive players, they will all tell you not a whole lot has changed. The defense gave Sheridan a gatorade bath after the first win, so clearly they don't find the guy objectionable. Third, I missed the part where the Giants forced Spags out. The guy took a head coaching job. Personally, I think he will regret his time with the Rams, but the Giants offered him lots of cash to stay and he wanted to be a head coach. What were they supposed to do? Lock him in the Meadowlands and post a guard on him 24/7? Everyone would have loved to have Spags stay, but he had every right to pursue a head coaching job if that's what he wanted and, clearly, he did. The stupidity of your posts continues. We all know you lost your season tickets because you couldn't afford the PSLs. As I told you before, go get your GED and maybe your salary will increase a little bit. You're all bitter towards NY? Move to Dallas or Philly or DC and be surrounded by people who share your dislike. It shouldn't be too hard for you to sell your trailer, even in this economy. What's so funny about you Bob, is I have been reading your Giants "conspiracy" posts on the Daily News website and everyone is in agreement there, that you are a jackass. You even changed your login name and everyone knew it was still you. Everywhere you post, people perceive you as a psychotic, rambling dolt. Might be time for you to learn something from that.
"And that reality could be enough to get some members of the team to begin accepting the possibility that this year might not be their year."
Geez Florio, they're 5-1. Let's not put the nail in their coffin just yet.

Hey SF Saints Fan, the Patriots play in London next weekend you idiot. All your previous comments/opinions are now null/void.
That was a brutal game to watch, but I think the Giants are built to bounce back. If these teams face again, even if it is back at the Dome, I doubt Brees and Co. will be hanging anywhere near 48 on the Giants' D.
That said, however, the Saints certainly appear to be on a mission, and lucky for them, they avoid the cold and inclement climates for the final stretch of the season. I don't see any reason why they won't end up with home field, even if the Falcons are playing great.
JerrysWorld: The Pats game in London is NOT their home game. Doofus.
"It was an eye opener we will bounce back and get better...."
We??? What are you going to improve on this week to help your team win? Chip eating and beer drinking?
SF Saints Fan says: "You may have forgotten that the Saints played an entire season away from home one year and one of those games was a Saints "Home Game" that was played against the Giants in Giants Stadium."
And, clearly, you have forgotten that there was no "local" stadiums available for that game against the Giants because of the hurricane and it's aftermath and that all the proceeds from that game were donated to Katrina relief. Your beef over that fiasco is with the Army Corps of Engineers, not the Giants.
Definition of "loose"
a: not rigidly fastened or securely attached
b: having worked partly free from attachments
c: having relative freedom of movement

If it was "loose" it could NOT be "pinned"

Simple ENGLISAH vocabulary obviously not taught here.
BESIDES the ball was loose and out before he hit ther ground and the result would have been a touchback and Giants still would have been in that game when 2nd half started. Just another game Hochuli or the refs manipulated using words that they have no idea really means as it is another county's language.

"I'm still laughing.......

I don't know that I'd be laughing too hard when your team's best week is the week that they don't play.
Jerry's World:
Of course I know this. That is why I wrote what I wrote. The Patriots are playing in London, but it is an "Away Game" for them and a "Home Game" for the team they are playing. The Patriots did not lose a home game like the Saints did when they played in London.
Read what I wrote, idiot. (I usually wouldn't call anyone else an idiot, but you called me one and I was very clear in what I wrote.) I wrote no "Home Games" in London for the Giants, Cowboys or Patriots in the near future. They may play "Away Games" in London, but that is an advantage to them because they don't have to play another NFL team in their home stadium. (But calling Tampa an NFL team right now may be a stretch.) The teams that will lose "Home Games" to play in London will be the usual suspects, Saints, Bucs, Detroit, Bengals, Bills, Rams, etc. All of the "non-chosen ones" among NFL teams. When the Giants, Cowboys or Patriots lose a "Home Game" to play in another country then we will have some fairness in scheduling. You play who you play, but the system is set up that certain teams will not lose home games to play in another country.
2007 London Game:
Giants vs. Miami (Miami Home Game)
2008 London Game:
Chargers vs. Saints (Saints Home Game)
2009 London Game:
Patriots vs. Bucs (Bucs Home Game)
2010 London Game:
????? But I would hazard a guess that it will not be a "Home Game" for one of the preferred franchises (Patriots, Giants, Cowboys, etc.)
I am going to guess that the 2010 London Game will be the Colts "at" the Broncos.
i am enrolling myself in stoney brook university so that i will be as smart as you. easty

Wow a high scoring offense looking so good in October. Where and when have we seen this before. Ohhh yeahhh every damn year. Wow the Giants are done being 5-1 with 10 games left. A team that won the superbowl and were number one in the NFC last year. Done after 6 games...being 5-1. Explain how this works again?
I did a little research of these high powered offenses that led the NFL in scoring through out the years. Last year it was the Saints, year before that the Patriots, year before the Chargers, year before that the Seahawks, year before that the Colts, year before that the Chiefs, Year before that the Chiefs, Year before that the Rams. You know how many of these teams won the Superbowl? NONE OF THEM!
Good luck Saints. ROFL

So if the Giants get to get two plays/calls back do the Saints as well?
Chill out about the Giants....some history...In 2007 The Giants finished the regular season 10-6, improving upon their 8-8 record in 2006 in which they finished third in their division. They qualified for the playoffs as a wild-card team at the number 5 seed, and beat the #4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the top-seeded Dallas Cowboys, and the #2 Green Bay Packers to become the National Football Conference representative in Super Bowl XLII, in which they beat the AFC Champion New England Patriots 17-14 (After the Patriots perfect season). The 2007 New York Giants became the 9th wild card team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl and the 5th wild card team to win the Super Bowl. It was the 7th league championship season for the New York Giants. They're better now than they were then. The Saints could have their day too....
Yeah, the NFL gods have been kind to the Saints. That's why they scheduled them to play the three toughest divisions in football...the NFC South, the NFC East, and the AFC East. There was only one team in those three divisions with a losing record last year (WAS at 7-9). There were five playoff teams and one team with an 11-5 record that missed on a tie breaker. You may have heard of them, the Patriots.
So far, they have blown out 50% of the NFC East and beat 50% of the AFC East by double digits with zero TD's from Drew Brees. They still have the top two (from last year) teams in the AFC East and all six games within their division, so they have a long way to go.

EXACTLY what I have been saying the whole season. But we, The Cowboys (yes I said WE thats what real football fans who ride for their teams say) have been dubbed mediocre by losing 2 close games to good football teams which I admit the Giants are, they are just so OVERRATED. Now Im well aware that we still have to travel to N.O. in December, but still having two games against the Eagles and the Skins have me licking my chops.
And please, Giants fans, have some CLASS and do not blame a 48-27 loss on some stupid fumble call or the refs period. You LOST BAD, so man up and take it like men, if you are one.
Oh yeah, GO COWBOYS.
I've been a Giant fan since the late 50's and always watching them it's always been defense and a bit light on the offense. Their record of 5-0 was rather untested since 3 of the wins were against teams that were 1-14 collectively. The beat a mediocre Cowboy team by two. I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants lose 6 games.
Bob S. says: "i am enrolling myself in stoney brook university"
Stony Brook is a University Center. You wouldn't get in.
"giants would have won yesterday if the idioto doctors of the giants didnt break down phillips playing him while he be hurt"
idioto doctors? playing him while he be hurt? Overlooking the atrocious grammar, haven't you been humiliated by your asinine conspiracy theories enough already? Phillips is an unfortunate injury. It's football. Happens to every team. Saints were missing one of their starting O lineman yesterday. Kareem McKenzie went off in the cart because he twisted his leg on a loose football. That the doctors' fault, too?
"tomorrow is the trade deadline - should the giants do anything?"
I would love to see them get some secondary/LB help. I don't see anyone on the roster, of value, that they can afford to trade to get a player with significant enough talent to help. No one is going to give up an All Pro LB for Sinorice Moss. I'm not sure NY can get a case of beer for Moss. Next year's draft is supposed to be one of the best and deepest in years. Seeing how Jerry Reece has had above average success in the draft, I would be reluctant to give up an early pick unless some one outstanding was available. I'm not aware of any DB/LB that is available being an upgrade. Lots of scrubs for sale, but that won't benefit NY at all. Besides, if they were to make a deal, it should have been last week. You trade when you're 5-0 and just pounded a team. That's when you get your best deals. It didn't happen, so either Jerry wasn't looking or he didn't care for what he saw. My money's on the latter. We know he calls around because of the Braylon Edwards trade talk before the draft. Given what the Browns wanted, Reece made the absolutely right move in turning it down. They asked for way too much and Edwards salary demands were and are ridiculous.
bezee23 says: "The Cowboys (yes I said WE thats what real football fans who ride for their teams say) have been dubbed mediocre by losing 2 close games to good football teams"
Noooooo, Dallas has been dubbed mediocre because Tampa Bay hung 450 yards of offense on them, they needed OT to beat KC, and they haven't been able to stop anyone in the last two minutes of a game. Funny how when you're media darlings, you use it to "prove" how good you are (and send 11 players to the Pro Bowl when the Super Bowl winner sent one) and when the media turns on you, you're all victims. Take your own advice and "take it like men, if you are one".
G-men got their butts handed to them. Plain and simple, hell... Dallas RAN for 250 yards against them. OVER RATED clap clap clap clap clap......
Stop the whining and excuse making, Giants fans!! Terrible officiating, missing defensive players....... you want a tissue! You got beat by a much superior football team. Plain and simple! Time to get over it and move on. Excuses are for losers and that's what you were on Sunday!!
Saints 37
Chargers 32
That was the final score in London... What game were ya'll watching???
I don't know why people are jumping on the Eagles in this thread, but let's be clear...
When the Eagles lose, Philly fans admit that they sucked.
When Dallas loses, Vox cranks out meaningless stats.
When New York loses, all I hear are excuses about hurt players and the game not mattering.
Okay. So the Skins and the Birds looked like crap this week. At least we're men enough to admit it. Excuses are for girls, and Dallas fans all look like Vox Veritas.
Google "Vox Veritas" and click on the first link to see what I'm talking about. The real joke is his face.
Gregg Williams an A-list head coaching candiate? Is everyone forgetting his terrible head coaching stint with the Bills where he looked completely lost and was pretty much outcoached every week? A great d-coordinator, but a horrible head coach.
Dale:
You hit the nail right on the head with the comment about Gregg Williams being a great Defensive Coordinator and a terrible head coach. Two other prime examples of this are current Defensive Coordinator of the Broncos, and former head coach of the Niners, Mike Nolan. The second prime candidate for a great D coach and not so great head coach would be Wade Phillips who has done a good job as a defensive coordinator, but not so great a job as a head coach.
As Clint Eastwood would say, "... sometimes a man just has to know his limitations." This applies in all facets of life, including coaching in the NFL.
I hope Gregg Williams decides to go the route of great Defensive Coordinators who stay put and live the good life, sorta like Monty Kiffin did for so many years in Tampa and Jim Johnson (RIP) of the Eagles. You can live a long and productive life as a Defensive Coordinator and maybe even accomplish some great things Coach Williams, (i.e. Super Bowls) if you just stay put. Ride this horse until it's legs fall off!
And Gregg Williams is a great compliment to Sean Payton. They were meant to be teamed up together and should remain that way for a long time. They are both aggressive with their respective specialties -- Payton on Offense and Williams on Defense.

When the Eagles lose, Philly fans admit that they sucked." Ocelot138
Give me a break. I've yet to hear a single iggles fan man up and admit that the Saints beat them. It's always been excuses about McNabb being hurt. Got news for you. McNabb doesn't play defense. And neither did your "defensive" players. But I'll let you man up now, since that's what you claim to do. Admit it. The Saints whipped you ass!
