A year ago, the Steelers chose to deactivate wide receiver Santonio Holmes for one game after he was cited for marijuana possession.
They won’t sit kicker Jeff Reed down this Sunday, however, despite his citation for public intoxication Sunday night, among other charges. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says the situations are different.
Holmes’ arrest came later in the week (Thursday) and Tomlin said they sat him down because they didn’t want him being a distraction that week. The move was “not punitive.”
Since Reed’s arrest happened Sunday, the team had “an opportunity to address it.”
They also might not want the opportunity to carry two kickers for a week.
Nice knowing you Jeff. No way the Stillers try to bring you back after this season.
the steelers* are hypocrites. just like when their linebackers were beating up women in the offseason and they released a scrub and kept harrison and lied about the charges. despicable.
Good. I love Jeff Reed…he’s a great kicker who’s won countless games for us over the years, and he’s got some personality to him. I mean, fighting a towel dispenser? Awesome. As long as he keeps making kicks, which outside of the Chicago game (1 bad game in 7 years is acceptable in my book), he needs to be a Steeler.
“They also might not want the opportunity to carry two kickers for a week.”
That’s without a doubt the ACTUAL reason for this double-standard. Very astute Gregg.
When it comes down to it, business trumps everything else in the league…
How about mentioning the obvious difference? Because pot is illegal and alcohol is not.
Both broke the law, but I think we all can agree that possesion of pot is a more serious offense than getting drunk and acting like an idiot.
I’ll bet Sebastian Janakowski who drinks and smokes on the sideline during games and drives home drunk finds this whole story amusing.
Between this, the stories coming out of bars on the South side, the paper towel incident and his semi naked pictures, Reed has alcohol problem written all over him. They need to either get him into treatment or get him out of town.
“They also might not want the opportunity to carry two kickers for a week. ”
Rosenthal has officially graduated from the Mike Florio School of journalisim/comment baiting.
Not to nit-pick, but shouldn’t the days without an arrest read 2 instead of 7 since this just happened Sunday.
Or do kickers not count as football players? I could see this arguement too.
Why don’t the Stealers buy a case before the game for Reed. Maybe that’s the only way he’ll realize the two posts in the middle are his target.
ronry: I think the linked article states he was cited with a notice-to-appear being sent; I don’t think he was technically “arrested,” but what do I know?
ronry, the reason why the “days w/o arrest” meter reads 7 instead of 2 is because Reed was not arrested (though the headline would make you believe otherwise).
That’s the reason why Reed is playing Sunday. He got a citation, not a visit to the hoosegow.
shocker
This type of behavior won’t be tolerated by the Steelers.
Wife beating and drug charges are OK, but peeing in the open air- absolutely not!
Chuck Noll is probably rolling in his grave.
How dirty is your team when your kicker gets into trouble and the most emotional guy on the team, Wines Hard, is the biggest cheap shot artist in the NFL?
Yeah getting hammered and threatening a cop outside a bar isn’t nearly as illegal as possessing some pot.
It’s official……. The Steelers are the new Bengals.
Strange articles sure inspire strange posts.
Consuming alcohol is legal; smoking marijuana is not. It’s logical that the Steelers would handle a citation (not an arrest) for intoxication differently than an arrest for marijuana possession. No hypocrisy here. Move along, folks.
@crex43 … A team isn’t dirty because the kicker has a drinking issue. And Ward has been hailed by other team defenses as the toughest wideout in the game. Only the Ravens whine about his “cheap shots.” They can dish ‘em out (see last week’s fines) but can’t take hard hits.
@TheRuralJuror… A weird attempt at humor? Coach Noll is alive & kicking.
Tomlin is a racist, plain and simple.
Shocking. Only bad players get suspended by the Steelers.

The light given off by the collection of Lombardi’s & SB rings tends to blind people.
I love the Steelers!!!!!!!!
let the drunk kick! From one drunk to another I can’t do football (Steeler football at that) w/out a beer so why rob the player AFTER HOURS!!!! ok he needs to keep it in his pants in public but wait not meet too many men who keep thier pants on in public or private. Football players are men who could care less and if half you guys made the funds Jeff makes and have the rings he does you would be pissing out car windows. I know I would and I’m a female. Until he kills someone LAY OFF!!!!!

So Santonio Holmes is bad and Jeff Reed is good?

You are correct, this type of behavior won’t be tolerated by the Steelers. Reed is acting like a moron in his contract year (and wants to be one of the highest paid kickers), he’s not going to get the deal he wants…if he gets a deal at all.
Reed didn’t pee in public, that was Spaeth…read the story. And they are not ok with wife beating and/or drug charges…if you knew anything about either Holmes or Harrisons case, you’d know they were both dropped.
Chuck Noll probably isn’t rolling in his grave…since he’s not dead.

Why would he get suspended?
Your scumbag head coach and owner got fined 3/4 of a million bucks for their despicable acts against football, and neither of them got any kind of suspension. How does pissing on a car top that?
Skippy Reed is a great kicker, but he’s an ass.
He’s is one of the Steelers greatest place kickers. But he’s an ass, plain and simple.
Emphasis on ASS
Tighten up Skippy!! DAMN!!
Reed is proof that you can have two Superbowl rings and still be a loser…
I hope the steelers keep him on the team…You can only be “functional” for so long and it appears his off the field lifestyle is catching up to him. His f/g percent has dropped quite a bit this year…
A career 83% guy is down to 70%…
