Rumors fly that Pats have cut Joey Galloway

We’ve just picked up an unconfirmed rumor from a league source that the Patriots have released receiver Joey Galloway.

Galloway had been inactive for the past three games, despite not being injured.  He has been a disappointment during his short stint in New England.

Galloway, 38, been linked to the Ravens via trade talks.  It could be that the Patriots tried to move him but were not getting offers from Baltimore or anyone else, even if (as it appears) they tried to create the impression that he would have been cut after the trade deadline, and thus exposed to waivers.

If it’s true that Galloway has been cut, the fact that the Patriots have opted to give Galloway a chance to pick his next team instead of his next team (probably a bad one) picking him should go a long way toward promoting goodwill in the locker room.

Sure, the NFL is a business.  But that doesn’t mean players still on the team fail to notice when the front office gives a guy the shaft gratuitously.

UPDATE:  It’s confirmed.  Galloway is out.

Yeah, but what the hell do the Patriots get out of cutting him? It does not add up. Why cut Banta-Cain and then Galloway? What is the point of opening two extra roster spots unless they are going to trade Thomas for two players and then bring back Banta-Cain.

They were tring to make it look like a team wanted him so they would get a better/if any offer.
Didnt work out so they will resign Banta-Cain and move forward. No harm no foul

My guess is cutting Banta-Cain was precautionary move in case they were able to say trade a pick for a player…just basic thinking ahead and giving themselves some ability to do things, in case the possibility arose.
But I guess we will see.

The Patriots have a couple guys who need to be activated off the PUP list within the next 10 days or so…..including WR Brandon Tate who they are very high on. Galloway wasnt a problem child or whiner……so why not just let him go and allow him the freedom to play wherever he wants. No one has any hard feelings this way. It wasn’t a “Seymour situation” where the guy held out once and had no intention of re-signing.

Who’d they cut in training camp again to keep him? Wasn’t there some controversy?

Speaking of Seymour, I can’t express how thankful I am that you guys gave him up, I really can’t.
    Again, thank you.

They cut Greg Lewis in training camp to keep him.
The guys coming off the PUP list – I think they have 21 days of roster exemptions before they have to be added to the 53 man roster.

They cut Greg Lewis and that was surprising because Galloway had done nothing and, although Lewis had done little or nothing during games, Lewis was getting better “practice press”. Not to mention that Lewis is younger, cheaper, and had a contract that went through 2011.
None of us know how Lewis would have worked out, but it could not have been worse than Galloway. Of course, veteran or rookie WR evaluation has been one of Belichick’s weak points (Donald Hayes, Doug Gabriel, Chad Jackson, Bethel Johnson). And, yeah, Belichick has hit on a few with Moss and Welker being the top of the line (Patten, Gaffney and Caldwell also had some productivity for the Pats).

Actually, I think those guys need to be activated today. Pretty sure that is what Belichick said yesterday during his conference call.

They can start to practice with the team today, without being counted as part of the roster. But within the next three weeks they would have to either be activated, or put on IR for the season.
