Cutler's deal accelerated his $12 million bonus

Jay Cutler’s rookie contract included a $12 million roster bonus due and payable on the first day of the 2011 regular season.

With the possibility looming that there will be no 2011 season (or, at a minimum, that the first game will be delayed), Cutler’s new deal from his new team moved the $12 million roster bonus into 2009, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

So the $20 million in guaranteed money includes the $12 million that he would have earned in 2011.  Which means that the $30 million in new money includes only $8 million of the guaranteed money.

We still need to see the full deal before concluding whether the contract reflects the value of a franchise quarterback for whom the Bears gave up two first-round picks and Kyle Orton.

Wow 30m extention after only 5 games and a 3-2 record. Whos his agent?

Just at face value, it seems to be right about in line with where he stands among his peers….somewhere along the upper middle, lower top, above average, below elite. Nothing special but enough to “feed his family.”

is he even good? He’s never won a playoff game, I dont even think has been to one.
this guy gets a free pass at everything because he’s coined a gun slinger. If it’s eli throwing picks like that or rothleisberger, even romo they get crucified. he throws a ton of passes and is always wreckless, especially in the red zone but since he has a good arm is considered good, please.

I wonder what Vince Young’s and Matt Lineart’s second deals will look like?
I think this is a good move for Chi-town. Jay will work out for them once he gets a new OC and some better WRs.

I’m pretty sure he’s got Bus Cook, funny enough.

meanwhile Orton is set to make $975k this year and is doing MUCH better than Cutler would have. I think he would have found ways to blow a couple of those close Broncos games.
Somewhere Pat Bowlen is tapping his fingers together and laughing to himself. Mwahahahaha.

    RIP,
Cutler isnt a rookie, and these arent the first 5 games hes ever played. Both the Bears and Cutler had to know something like this was going to happen as soon as trade talks began.
Cutler has earned that money. And depending on how the Bears do this year, he may deserve even more.

Damn, Florio, you shyster lawyers really know how to count beans!

You’re on crack. Orton almost gave the Patriots game away just before the gw kick. Did u, or did u not see him throw the ball right to the cb in the endzone, only to be saved by his wr. Or the td he threw to Moreno, that went right through the arms of the Dallas defender? Orton is still the same as he was in Chicago, decent. Luck has been on his side so far, and as long as his O-line keeps him safe, and the D is doing their thing, they’ll win. Orton isn’t the reason for their impovement, its the fact they have healthy rbs, one of the best 0-lines in fball, and defense that went from the worst to first. Lets put credit where its due.
Plus, I’m sure you were one of the guys ripping the deal originally. Have some balls and admit to it.

Pat Bowlen only signs the paychecks. Getting Orton was all McDaniels idea and he got pummeled for about 5 months over that – but he stayed with it and didn’t crumble under the pressure the Denver press and fans put on him. 5 months ago McDaniels was destroying the franchise, now he’s a a savant in Denver.

you seem to forget a certain person the bears also received in return….we received Cutler AND Johnny Knox, whose proven to be a steal in the 5th round and putting up better numbers than most of the rookie wideouts this year….scored a TD in each of his first 4 games as a chicago bear….

  16. LionsFanSince84 says: Oct 21, 2009 7:00 PM

Cutler is about as Overrated as Jeff George, Look at the Broncos without the crybaby QB, they are 6-0 and the Bears look worse than last years squad, they went from a team built to win in the playoffs with Forte running hard and a Nasty D to a Passing offense that has no true #1 WR. Cutler has 7 ints already, he will have triple that by the end of the season. Hope he has fun watching his Ex-team go to playoffs while him and the Bears are at home on the couch.

  17. LionsFanSince84 says: Oct 21, 2009 7:06 PM

Johnny Knox is “average” all he has is speed, have not been impressed with any of their WR. Now that they mortgaged their future away , they will be a wreck of a team in a year or 2, Lovie will be fired and Cutler will be traded again!

Cutler 3rd on MVP list below Manning and Brees.

  19. Pastabelly says: Oct 21, 2009 10:36 PM

Cutler should shut his pie hole until he actually wins a playoff game and that isn’t happening any time soon.
