Steve Smith thought he might be traded

Panthers receiver Steve Smith, who said after Sunday’s win over the Buccaneers that he’s no longer an asset to the team, coincidentally began to hear chatter regarding the possibility that he could be traded.

I heard multiple teams I was going to,” Smith said Wednesday, per Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com.  “You hear the stories about waking up
and being traded.  You never want to be a guy who wakes up Carolina and
hears there is a flight for you going somewhere else, so when you hear
that you ask people.  I asked my agent if there was anything going on.  I
got a few texts from different people in different states, so I had to
make sure and investigate it.”

But nothing was happening, according to G.M. Marty Hurney.

“We had no conversations with anybody about trading Steve Smith,” Hurney said.

Then again, why would Hurney say anything else?  After Smith’s comments from Sunday, anyone looking for a receiver would have been stupid not to call the Panthers and explore whether Smith might be available.  And it would be stupid for Hurney to acknowledge it, since if the season continues on its current path, Smith’s offseason plans might include trying to run a permanent out route.

Come on Steve, you were hoping that flight might be to Indy, Minny, New Orleans, New England, hell, anywhere but there. Well.., maybe not St Louis, Tampa Bay or Oakland, but you wanted out of Carolina in the worst way. And I don’t blame you. Too much talent going to waste.

@ MattMoore For 09 -This is the second story I seen where you say to move on,nothing to see here. Why don’t you just get that dumb ass of yours moving along and let us decide if we like what we see!!!

    PervyHarvin,
There isn’t anything to see in Carolina, so he’s right. Move along nothing to see. No defense, no quarterback only one stud wide out and two running backs that manage to get things done on their own. 5-11 at best this year.

Steve, i didnt hear any trade rumors on you, you are an asset to the team, the problem is Delhomme cant get you the ball, once Delhomme gets it or we get a new quarterback, you will be back to your old self.

My take is that Steve Smith is the player who Jerry Jones didn’t identify when taking about the super-trade that Jones didn’t make.
Perhaps, that’s why Jones pumping up the Roy Williams transaction of last year.

Clearly he needs to go to the Giants, just to confuse defenses.

Any trade involving Steve Smith should have Julius Peppers attached to it. Let ‘em both go and get some young hungry talent through the draft. The money will come in handy after the current union contract expires next season.
Free agency is going to strangle the league.
I can see the scrubs and union line crossers taking snaps now.
