The headlines that said that Bengals tackle Andre Smith finally returned to practice Wednesday weren’t exactly true.
Yes, Smith was on the field in pads and showed up on the injury report for the first time as a “limited participatant.”
But Smith didn’t actually do anything new. Smith performed some individual drills, just like last week.
”He can’t do contact. What is that? We saw him do the same things as
last week,” offensive line coach Paul Alexander said. “I don’t know [how much progress he has made]. I have to see him do something. I wish
I knew. I wish I had some more information.”
Alexander’s line has played exceedingly well without Smith, but the coach still sounds impatient with his star pupil’s progress.
“They say ‘Go ahead Paul he can practice but he can’t do contact.’ It’s football, it’s not badminton right?” Alexander said.
At least Smith is “noticeably lighter” than when he made his cameo on Hard Knocks before injuring his foot. First weighing in with the team at 364 pounds, Smith risked forfeiting half of his weekly game check if he stayed over 350 pounds.
He weighs somewhere between 330-345 now, but wouldn’t tell the Cincinnati Enquirer his exact weight. The Bengals are hoping to have Smith back for a Week 9 game after its bye week.
It’s all fun and games for other teams until the behemoth starts pancaking DE’s and LB’s.
You don’t get the title of best run blocker in the SEC for nothing.

If Smith starts at RT, can we move Collins or Roland to LT? Collins performed admirably at the end of the season last year at LT, and Whitworth is a holding machine there, he belongs at LG.

Andre Smith has the potential to be a beast. Would have been interesting if he hadn’t of held out forever and missed all of camp and pre-season….then he managed to squeak in a practice before smashing his foot. Lost half of his rookie season over money, more importantly…money he didn’t get…he had to settle for what the Bengals were offering…he should have fired his agent immediately…gave him a bad reputation, didn’t get him the money he was asking for, and he isn’t playing….Whoever his agent was is a real winner lol.

CurseofBoJackson, I would love to move Whitworth back to LG. Like you said, he gets way too many holding calls at LT. However, Collins has been terrible this year. Roland seems to be getting better, but I’m not sure about starting him at LT. And at LG, Mathis has been doing well, and Livings did very well at the end of last year. And depth on the O-line was supposed to be our problem…

Thats right I guess 6 games in and he’s a bust? Hhhhhmmmm i guess they said he is already out for the year and will never play another down in the NFL. If he does what he did for bama and we can fix the left side you can say bust all you want while we march up and down the field.

ravensblo thats funny that you knock on cincy for drafting andre smith, considering smith is came from alabama where ozzie newsome is an alum and was one of ozzie newsomes favorite players in this last draft, in fact i think his exact words in an interview i saw was “best OT in the draft, if not the best player.” you dont get tagged with being the best run blocker or only give up 1 sack in the sec for no reason, cant wait for him to get up to speed and start pan-caking guys.
While I don’t think Smith is or will be a bust, I find it ironic and funny that Smith and “bust” are used in the same sentence, given the fact that he does have a massive set of b!tch tits.
