Flacco's ankle keeps him out of bye week practices

The Baltimore Ravens' bye week comes at a very good time, given that quarterback Joe Flacco has a swollen ankle.

How swollen is it?

"I think he's about four shoe sizes bigger right now than it was before so it's really swollen," coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday, according to Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.

Flacco didn't practice this week, but he's expected to be back when the team commences preparations for a November 1 visit from the Broncos.

"I could play today if we had to," Flacco said.  "It's no big deal."

Flacco has been a very bright spot for the 3-3 Ravens, who could be 6-0 but for three straight games in which late breaks didn't go their way.

Joe “Cool” Flacco is a bright upcoming quarterback. While last week’s game against the Vikings spotlighted superstars like Favre, Peterson and Ray Lewis; Joe Flacco was refreshing. I look forward to seeing the QB mature and I see him being associated with one of the great QBs and that’s Dan “the man” Marino. I look forward to seeing you recover and get back into the game Joe. Rest up during this bye week. Let that ankle recover and then get back to the reins at the QB position. You’re a fine straight drop back passer. Pick em apart Joe!

it will be interesting to follow the careers of flacco and ryan as they were both #1's last year. ryan got all the "manning" hype, and his stats were marginally better than flacco's last year but didn't get anywhere in the playoffs. flacco's stats outshine ryans this year, but the team isn't playing as well. i do know this; there are at least a dozen teams kicking themselves for not drafting this kid. he is going to be good and for a very long time.

Looks like someone is trying to audition for a job at PFT.

It seems like other teams are trying to hurt the guy, and I'm hoping we can keep him healthy. I would like to see them use Troy Smith on a few snaps against the broncos, not only to keep Joe from doing too much, but to throw some monkey wrenches at a good broncos defense.

I have to admit, last year, I wasn't too impressed. But watching him play in year 2, Flacco can really be something special. Still too early to induct him into Canton, but Ravens fans should be excited and fans of other AFC teams, like myself, should be a little concerned.
