Rex Ryan defends his big-talking ways

One of the most important duties of a football coach, at any level, is the management of expectations.

If the fans and the media and other interested parties (e.g., the dude who signs the checks) are led to believe that the team will be just OK but it ends up being better than OK, the coach isn’t criticized for not properly gauging the quality of the team.  Instead, he’s praised.

But if the fans, media, and check-writers are led to believe that the team will be better than OK and it ends up being just OK, the coach looks like a buffoon.

And so it is that Jets coach Rex Ryan is now spending time talking about the disconnect between his words regarding the 2009 Jets and the team’s current reality.

Though Ryan said he has no regrets for the things he has said, he admits he possibly “look[s] a little foolish” because of the team’s current 3-3 record.

“I believe in this team and I haven’t wavered one bit on it,” Ryan said in comments distributed by the team.  “I think we’re a good football team.  We just have had some tough breaks.  The fact that we’re in a game when you throw six interceptions is pretty good.”

Right, but it’s also pretty bad that the game wasn’t a blowout win for New York, given that the Jets rushed for 318 yards against the Bills, who were relegated to backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for most of the way.

Still, Rex Ryan recognizes that “big talk” can be a problem for team that isn’t winning games.

“That’s probably true,” Ryan said, but he remained resolute.  “It can’t be an issue for me.  I’m not flinching one bit.  That’s who I am, that’s what I believe.  I think you open yourself up for criticism, but my thing is, I’m trying to establish a mentality and a belief in this football team, so with me, I’m never flinching.  If I came in here to look good in the papers, I would have undersold myself and our football team and we could be raving about how great that we’re 3-3.

“That’s not what I came here to do.  I came here to win Super Bowls and win championships, and if that puts added pressure on our team, maybe so.  I will say this, I don’t think you can win it without having that mentality.  I know my family has been through a few of these Super Bowls [and] won a bunch of them, so I think that’s how you get it done.”

But having that mentality and putting it on display for the world to see are two very different things.  Most head coaches who have won Super Bowls don’t thump their chests and/or shake their poms poms at the podium.

So Ryan isn’t putting added pressure only on the team.  He’s putting it on himself.

And on G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, who avoided getting fired in January after a season of high expectations became a campaign of unfulfilled promise.  If it doesn’t turn around quickly this year for the Jets, Tannenbaum could be the next one to go — and then if Ryan doesn’t get run out the door as well he would be working for a General Manager who very likely will be counting the days until he can hire his own head coach.

The mental image of Ryan, “beating his chest”, makes me chuckle but with a little barf coming up in my mouth.
I picture his fat little arms trying to get around his big tits to find his chest. That move doesn’t work, and he looks like a fat penguin trying to climb up a snow bank.

Or if he wanted to look half-way decent, he’d drop about 200 – 250 lbs. Seriously, dude makes Tony Sporano look like Calista Flockhart.

Jets are infamous for a classless bunch. This loud coach problem is not his big mouth but lack of respect for his opponent. This culture is evident when Calvin Pace calls a clown Chad Hene and a gimmick the wildcat. Too much talk and little action. A sign of a bad team. Nothing beats like being graceful on defeat.

All rivalries and team loyalties aside, Ryan his the kind of pompous ass many people naturally love to see fail badly and get his comeuppance.

Well one thing’s for sure, nobody ever won one by putting a Ryan in charge.

Translation: “I’m a blow hard, so get used to it.”
Should suit all New Jerk fans just fine.

TRex is looking more and more like a snake oils salesmen.. There is tremendous first round talent all over that D and they are not performing up to par.. yet.. its to early for most of this talk but give him a full year to see if he is a coach or just a cheerleader

I think Rex Ryan has every right to talk as much as he wants and shouldn’t feel foolish about it. He’s a great coach. He took over for a completely inept moron who only won 9 out of 16 games, and through his attitude, and hard work, has molded them into a solid .500 team.

realityonetwo………… Sorry to disappoint you, most of us Jets fans wish he would just shut his mouth!
He’s hard to listen to day after day on radio and TV.

only thing Rex Ryan ever gonna win -
    APPLE PIE EATING CONTEST
    classless dbag
another one good coordinator, bad headcoach

If the Dolphins beat them at home next week and New England keeps cruising the PANIC button will be fullly depressed in New York. Media will be all over them. And they will limp into another 3rd place finish. This game is huge for them in many ways, divisional, a team(Dolphins) that physically dominated them, and inexperience at QB/HC…..that’s alot to ask down the stretch.

Maybe treating the second game of the season like the superbowl wasn’t a good idea afterall.

The Ryan family has won “a bunch” of SBs????
So not only is he a blowhard, he sucks at math?

    Rex-DC for one SB win
    Buddy-DC for one SB win
Rob-LB coach for two SB wins.
Not one as a HC which is all that’s germane to this discussion.

That is what you get for hiring a bean counter and not a football operations guy. (Note to Owners)

Tannenbaum fired? Do you have something against this guy Mike? Every negative Jets story you slide in there some reason for Tannenbaum to get fired. Why? He’s a pro-active GM who makes trades to make the team better. Every fan wants an aggressive GM. If not for him the Jets would still have Pennington. I think you’re way off base with that little jab. But you’re a lawyer, so sneaky shots are your forte.

you know the good & entertaining thing if you swing a big lip and you suck is like..
being 5’6 and 100 pounds and calling Mike Tyson a face painted fag
what im saying is – opponents wont just give 120%, they will do it for the entire game and have no mercy and make you pay, emberasse you. thats going to be a fun season to watch
Can anybody go and see if fireman Ed got him self concred socks and is about to jump into the Hudson????

  19. finsbooyah says: Oct 22, 2009 12:04 PM

I never thought I could hate the Jets any more, and then this fat ass comes waddling up to the podium, spewing out arrogant nonsense as his face jiggles. He has no-respect for his opponents (or himself apparently, considering his lack of discipline at the dinner table). But the best part about his attitude is his sense of entitlement, as if he has actually accomplished something as a head coach.
I can’t wait to watch this team fail. Fat f*ck, jiggly face Ryan can hold fireman Ed’s hand and watch this ship sink. It’s going to be beautiful.

i have to admit, i wouldn’t nearly loathe the jets as much if they didn’t run their damn mouths all the time.
disrespecting all the opponents you lose to won’t win you many fan points either.
i guess, ultimately, rex ryan suits the jets. they haven’t exactly been the “epitome” of class themselves….

The Jets, due to them being in NY I guess, have a history of over hyping. Ryan is a perfect cherry on top of the hot sundae.
Fade to 2002/03 when the Raiders played them in the playoffs. They took the field in the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum with these two little water/towel boys running around snapping towels and trying to incite the crowd, from a safe distance. Nice touch Herm. They believed all the ESPN hype about Pennington being Joe Namath. Nevermind the Raiders were 8-0 at home, the arguable best team in football, and had beaten everyone at home that year by 20 points.
Looking forward to welcoming them back to OAK.

His family membes have won a “bunch” of Super Bowls? Really? Name one SB won by a Ryan as a head coach? That’s right, not a single one. In fact, the entire Ryan history as HC is a disastrous one filled with failed teams. And yet this meathead goes full steam ahead in the face of his own abject failure as a coach and vows to keep doing things exactly the same despite losing consecutive games to 2 of the worst teams in the NFL. What a fool.
To quote Albert Einstein: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I couln’t be more happy that this guy is coaching the Jets. :D

  23. Crowder911 says: Oct 22, 2009 1:30 PM

rexy boy, even if you go 3-13 there are three things for sure
    - you won the 2009 preseason
    - fastest HC ever winning the super bowl (took him only 3 games)
    AND
no mater what, you know that your dad will always be your BUDDY loooool
what kind of family is that??? Buddy? Rex? i dont wanna speak my mind right now…. that to me sounds like my mom & dad are brother and sister…
