California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill on Thursday that will pave the way for a new football stadium in Los Angeles, saying a stadium that could lure an NFL team to the area would provide an economic boost to the area.
"This is the best kind of action state government can create: action that cuts red tape, generates jobs, is environmentally friendly and brings a continued economic boost to California," Schwarzenegger said. "This legislation allows us to move forward with the construction of the nation's greenest football stadium and create thousands of jobs."
Schwarzenegger had already announced that he would sign the bill, which exempts the $800 million, 75,000-seat stadium from state environmental laws. Schwarzenegger says the stadium will create more than 18,000 jobs.
It's still not a sure thing that the stadium will get built, as developer Ed Roski Jr. may have trouble securing construction loans given the current economic climate. But Schwarzenegger's action was a big step toward making the stadium a reality.
If the stadium does get built, the Bills, Jaguars, Vikings and Rams all could be considered as candidates to move to California. The three teams currently in California -- the Raiders, 49ers and Chargers -- have also been mentioned as potential tenants for a new L.A. stadium.
Schwarzenegger says L.A. stadium will bring jobs

Great that Shwarzenegger is embracing a return to aggressive, thrill-seeking capitalism in California. Here's hoping one of the Wilson, Wilf, Brown etc. families are attracted by the high risk lure he's baited. Build and they will come, baby!
After all, who really wants to rely on current levels of government hand-outs...?
an environmentally friendly deal that exempts the stadium from state environmental laws.
how does that work?
I know it is a big TV market but what makes people think Los Angeles will be able to support a NFL team when the Raiders and Rams had to leave and the Chargers are constantly on the verge of home blackouts? Seriously?
Does it really take 18k people to run and service a stadium?
Yes, listen to the gov-anator. How far in debt has he but the state?
GO CHARGERS GO!!
Once the construction is over, most of those "thousands of jobs" will turn out to be minimum wage hot dog vendor positions. More corporate welfare - just exactly what this country needs.
Great, i'm sure Cali needs more jobs...my guess will be the L.A. Browns....even more jobs lost in ohio, wonderful!
How much is the state/city going to have to throw in for a new stadium? California is broke the way it is..
You dont NEED environmental laws in order to buld an environmentally friendly stadium. That's how that works.
I dont believe hot dog vendors make minimum wage. I'll bet most stadium employees make more then minimum wage. But regardless of the wage, do people really believe its better tonot have the jobs?
On a more football related note. I was in Orlando earlier this month. They were speaking of the ticket sale issues in Jacksonville. There appears to be an effort to get the team to move there. Of course given the choice I can't see an owner opting to be the third team in south Fl over LA, but .......
Read the book "Sports, Jobs, and Taxes". These new stadiums are never profitable for the tax payers.
Government can not create jobs by taxing some and giving to others. Obama found that out. Any job created by the multi millions it take to make the stadium, has to come from somewhere. So you must take 800 million out of the economy to create these jobs. Does anyone really think taking 800 million out of an economy through taxes will not destroy jobs?
If not, take a 100 million out and give it to me and I will create 10 minimum wage jobs tomorrow.
There won't be any worthwhile jobs (economically speaking) until we start building and making things again.
It won't be the 49'ers.
It won't be the Bills while Ralph is still alive.
Th low revenue vikings are the the best candidate to move and most in need of a stadium so they can start pulling their weight in bringing in revenue.
Jerry Jones doesn't want the NFL to be paying corporate welfare to the vikings every year when they have done very little to get off welfare.
Good to see California throwing out environmental laws for something important.
I just wonder who the AFC team will be that goes with the vikings.
LA can support an AFC team as well as the vikings in this new stadium.
That Colesium was built for the Olympics long ago and not 21s century football.
good way to distract the public from the fact they're footing a lot of that bill, eh Ahhhhhnold?
::whispers:: "If you build it, they will come.".....then leave again.
hell those jobs will go to illegal aliens, not actual americans.
the governator is a rockefeller republican, that is, to say, a democrat, and he is sweet on illegals for cultural and economic reasons.
Four NFL teams in one state? No, I don't think so. They can move one of the three teams they already have.
L.A. has two NBA teams, two MLB teams, two NHL teams, etc. enough is enough. There are many states without an NFL team that would love to have one.

Dude, this state is ungovernable, unless you're a leftist radical liberal. Then and only then will you get what you want. Otherwise you're hamstrung by the unions and special interests. The teachers union is the worst of all.
Two years ago the Governor put some measures on the ballot that would have helped to stop a lot of our problems. Those measures included caps on state workers pensions, a re-drawing of congressional lines to prevent jerrymandering and caps on state budget spending.
Not really a lot that can be done when your aim is to control spending in an environment where spending is all anyone wants to do.
The unions made sure they got shot down.
IIRC, Roski is building the stadium with private funds, not tax payer money.
For the idiot above that says it will be the L.A. Browns, thanks for the flashback nightmares...but that won't happen. If any team should move there it should be Jacksonville. Only thing is, they aren't drawing in J'ville and nobody draws in L.A. Just leave everything as is or give a team to Utah or Boise.
Get To The Choppah!
I remember going to Raider games in the 90's in L.A. They might fill the new stadium at first, but when they start to lose that place will be empty.....plus there are a million other things to do in L.A. than watch a shitty team and get stuck in horrific traffic. Can you imagine the traffic on the 60 and the 10 if they build a stadium in Industry?
Here come the Los Angeles Raiders......
Vikings and Chargers will share the stadium.
No public financing on it yet, only believe that once all of the financing is finalized.
Lot of hoopla for merely bypassing environmental regulations.
Other than the construction of the stadium these jobs will be low paying, no more than once a week and with no benifits.
I worked for the Chicago Park District at Soldier Field for 3 years and the pay sucked.
The only reason I did it was for the free Bears games and concerts.
I had a real job working some place else to make money.
If you build it NO one will come. What they will give those 19K jobs to the illegal aliens.

True, but it is unlikely Roski would pay for intrastructure so the county would have to fork the bill for that. (i.e. taxpayers money)
I'm from LA,
And 4 sure we don't want NO sorry azzzzz Chargers in LA...
The Bills suck, The Viking don't a have a LA Fan base and the Jags are no good.
We talk about the Raiders, but at least they brought LA A Superbowl Ring IN 84.
Those teams listed never ever ONE a superbowl. Give LA a new team or least bring a team with a winning style.
If the Raiders come back, at least it will be sold out. Because RAIDERS FANS RULE LA.
GO RAIDERS!
You're right, none of those teams ever ONE a SuperBowl. So what? If you get a team, support it. 2 teams have left LA for greener pastures.
didn't obama also say he was not going to use public money? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
"It will bring jobs" is a great cover that politicians use. Big deal it brings low paying jobs, the cost surely outweighs the gains. California is completely and utterly, 100% flat broke. They dole out billions to illegals to every year, yet they feel they need ANOTHER football team in California because well, hey San Diego, Oakland and San Francisco has one.
California has to come to the government with it's hands out begging because they had $0 saved in their "rainy day" fund. When the economy was doing well, they spent and spent and spent and spent.
L.A. fans won't embrace a team if it moves there. Too many are Raider, Charger or 49ers fans already. Not nearly enough people will go to the games. This is a terrible idea by a complete moron. The only state who elects someone because they were in movies. Ca is the perfect example of a loony, left wing state that is the model for the current administation. Let's spend and spend and justify it later or not at all.
The Rams left LA in 1979. They had almost all sell outs before they left for Anaheim. Repeat after me, knuckleheads...ANAHEIM IS NOT LOS ANGELES! ANAHEIM IS NOT LOS ANGELES!!
When a team actually moves back to LA, they will sell out, so long as it is not in the Mausoleum.
