Cerrato: Zorn will coach rest of the season

The Redskins players asked for an endorsement of their coach Jim Zorn last week.

After another loss, Zorn’s playcalling duties being stripped, more reports that Mike Shanahan was approached about Zorn’s job, and a near resignation, the players have what they wanted.

Speaking on his radio show, executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said that Zorn would be staying for the rest of the season.

“Let me start by making a few things very perfectly clear,” Cerrato said.  “Jim Zorn is the head coach of the Washington Redskins and will for the
rest of this season, and hopefully into the future.”

Wow?

Cerrato’s statements supports the notion written about by Mr. Florio last week that Zorn and Cerrato’s fates are tied together.  Cerrato also disputed the notion of internal turmoil within the organization.

“The relationships internally within the organization quite frankly remain the same,” Cerrato said.  (Well, except that Zorn is no longer calling plays for the offense that he installed.)

The news is rather surprising and may quiet the daily speculation surrounding Zorn’s job security, but it probably won’t end it. Cerrato’s statement reminds us the quotes from teams that completely denied any interest in Michael Vick over the summer.

If Zorn and possibly Cerrato are fired during the season, the story won’t be what Cerrato said on October 23.

Get every cent you can come up with and bet on the Eagles on Monday night. This team is falling to pieces, and it has yet to hit rock bottom. Sell your blood, sperm, whatever it takes but this game is a steal!

Come on, hasn’t the guy alrady suffered enough? This is just inhumane. Fire the guy and put him out of his misery for Pete’s sakes, so he can move on to a more normal team.
In reality though, Cerrato can make all the statements he wants; it won’t help Zorn one bit if Snyder decides to can them both after the next loss.

Seriously, I hope Zorn has the guts to stick it out and not quit. What a turd Snyder is for trying to publicly humiliate the guy into quitting just to save some money.

See, this is what you get when you are the smartest person in the world. As much as you say you are going to hire people who know football and let them run the show, you just can’t help yourself. So you actually wind up hiring people who will do what you tell them to do, even though it is killing the product. And if by some chance you do hire someone who has the guts to tell you that your ideas suck, well, you just fire him and replace him with someone who will do what you want, because, after all, you are way smarter than anyone who would work for you. This, my friends, is the heavy burden that Danny Boy must shoulder.

  18. Branephood says: Oct 23, 2009 10:04 AM

We can only pray that Zorn and Vinny stay this season and beyond. The Redskins are a bunch of chumps and bitches that the rest of the division can whup up on to prepare to play real teams like the Chiefs, Lions, Bucs, and Raiders.
    FAIL!

  19. Patsfan1776 says: Oct 23, 2009 10:13 AM

It is a tough economy. Snyder can’t afford to be paying for a fired coack and a new head coach. According to recent comments, Zorn almost quit so I think the Skins front office is hoping that after a little more humiliation he will quit and they won’t need to pay him.

  20. Doohickey says: Oct 23, 2009 10:14 AM

Zorn is safe until the Redskins lose to Dallas. And since the Cowboys love to self-destruct against inferior teams, there’s a good chance Cerrato is right.

  25. Bill In DC says: Oct 23, 2009 10:30 AM

“Let me start by making a few things very perfectly clear,”
Funny how people use modifiers on definitive statements like that. ‘Very perfectly’ doesn’t add any more clarity to the statement that making it ‘perfectly clear’ doesn’t. Things can’t be more than ‘perfect’, can they?
I expected him to hold both hands in the air making ‘V’ sings and say “I am not a crook”.
Oh, he’s a tricksy one, yesss, he is”
The internal relationships being the ‘same as before’ doesn’t mean there isn’t turmoil, it could mean that there has always been internal turmoil.
How is Zorn the HC? He doesn’t call the plays, which implies he doesn’t control who is on the field, doesn’t have control of personnel, doesn’t have any say over the defense.
    Very perfectly sad.

  26. oldschoolfan says: Oct 23, 2009 10:33 AM

enough already! let the soap opera play itself out. in the meantime I’m putting my Redskins shirts, jerseys, hats on the shelf until this thing plays itself out for the sake of being laughed at in public. Some may say I’m not a true fan but quite the opposite, I’ve been around since the George Allen days. Hey! maybe we could try and resurrect him and at least try to have some FUN on both the field and in the locker room. Bring back the ice cream!! Maybe Zorn does have too much on his plate and needs a bit of support, why not give it to him and see what happens. Dan, take your celery and carrots, sit back, and be quiet for a time. It’s obvious the decision is made so stand by it to keep Zorn until the end of the season. “With the #1 pick in the 2010 draft the Washington Redskins select…”

  31. oldschoolfan says: Oct 23, 2009 10:47 AM

By the way, please make sure that the 1st pick IS a qb and not a tight end(Tebow) who can throw a bit. Also, one very good season by an unknown does not instantly make them NFL material. Look at their entire college career before jumping the ‘HYPE’ gun and go after a kid with a good, single, junior or senior year. Campbell with have a decent career as a back up like Todd Collins but he just isn’t starter material. Why not just plain and simple give Colt Brennan the reigns and say “go for it”, what do we have to lose? oh, that’s right we already have been losing so what does it matter? At least we’ll put ourselves possibly closer to that 1st draft pick next year. And what would be wrong seeing if June Jones would want to try the NFL coaching ranks again. At least his offense is exciting. and bring jerry glanville along for the ride, he’s a hoot!

  33. Tony Alexander says: Oct 23, 2009 11:23 AM

I put zero faith in anything that comes out of Vinny’s mouth. Unfortunately, Danny views Vinny as some sort of football guru when in actuality he is an idiot.
The Skins will beat the Eagles Monday night, I don’t say that because I am a fan, I say it because it will happen. Why you ask? Easy, they will win because they should not. It is the NFC East boys and girls and that is how things go…
I also believe, win (or lose) Zorn will be ousted during the bye week. Most likely the team will promote Danny Smith as interim head coach and rely on Sherm to aid in things until seasons end. I also think Snyder’s move to bring in Smith was calculated. When a replacement Coach is hired at years end the Redskins have to satisfy the Rooney Rule and give due consideration to minority candidates. Sherm will be “one” of those candidates…

Why is it so simple that everyone (read: EVERYFREAKINGONE) can see that the Redskins need to fire Cerrato and that Snyder needs to take a backseat on running the team. Hire a top notch GM; let him run the team.
But, for whatever reason, Snyder does not see this. How is that possible?? It’s beyond frustrating as a fan to see your favorite team operate like this for almost two decades, one of which is under Snyder’s ownership/leadership.

  36. DanSnyderSux says: Oct 23, 2009 11:38 AM

Here’s the quote from Vinny that really gets me:
“Later today Dan and I and Jim have our weekly Friday lunch, like we always do, and like Dan’s done forever with the head coach, to go over the upcoming game. You know, we’ll sit there, we’ll have lunch, we’ll bring in our pizza or Dan’s health food and all this, and chitchat about, you know, ‘All right Jim, tell us about the game, what do you think about Philly, what are we gonna do, how are we gonna do this?’ You know, and that’s what we’ve always done over time.”
REALLY? The biggest game of the year on “Monday Night Football” and instead of having your coach prepare his team for the game, you pick his brain over lunch? This organization has become a freak show!

At best, making this announcement is either wrong, overdue, and/or a pathetic attempt to stabilize a ship that’s near sunk.
At worst, he’s a piss poor liar. When Zorn does go, I hope this asstard is not long behind him. Should’ve never been here.
Instead pursuing avenues to patch up a damaged team, we’re making b.s. comments like this, asinine operational moves like complicating the play-calling (I respect Sherm Lewis, but come on).
    What a continual foot-in-mouth parade.
Congrats, Redskins, the organization is the worst-run in any of the major sports imo.

This is just Danny’s way of getting Zorn to quit, so he doesn’t have to pay Zorn’s salary.
If Danny fires him…he’s on the hook for the contract.
If Danny makes it such a miserable experience for Zorn, that Zorn quits…Danny doesn’t need to pay him anymore.
    It’s very simple.

However, maybe Snyder is keeping Zorn on, to ensure he gets one of the top three picks. I bet Sam Bradford is on Snyders speed dial right now. Combine Bradford with Holmgren or Shanny, Skins would have a hire powered offense for years to come.

  51. Steve says: Oct 23, 2009 12:55 PM

Daniel Snyder is becoming the next Al Davis. Soon no one will want to sign with Washington. Like Oakland it will be the last stop of NFL coaches and players. Who cares how much money Snyder throws out there. It will be a career breaker for most players if he continues to own this dysfuntional franchise. Daniel Snyder is the dysfunction.
I wish I had Snyder’s money and owned the Redskins. I would hire the right people and let them do their job. I would not of signed Albert (under achieving) Heynsworth and the team would be in the hunt for the playoffs.

Well, any decisions yet as who to let go and who to bring in? I come back from being gone all day and I see this nonsense about Sam Bradford!! At least he has an O-line but he is a fragile pup, remember the year before the Heisman? wasn’t he injured that year or am I mistaken? Get your heads out of the clouds. It’s the system he’s in!!! Maybe Stoops is available and wants to go Pro! NOT!! Just let the season goooo, away hopefully. It’s over people. Until Snyder grows some b…s, puts his foot down (if it can reach the floor), and finally puts some football people in charge, we will all have to wait and suffer until he sells the franchise. Again, get a QB in a pro style system from college who is durable. What about that kid from the U. of Washington? Has anybody thought about Rick Neuheisel as a QB coach or even Head Coach? He did it with Baltimore and lets look at their QB’s stats while he was there. Yes he is ignorant about gambling rules but he does have a proven track record with Colorado and the Univ. of Wash. His QB’s at UCLA were starting to look pretty good until injuries took over. Billick must have seen something worthwhile or he would not have brought him in. Until the saga ends we will have to endure. What are Sonny, Billy K., Ron Dole, Chris Hanburger and the like doing these days? Maybe they and the Hogs could come by and stir up things to motivate the bunch of baby millionaires to know what it’s like to play for the love of the game and not the almighty dollar. God Bless the Redskins and their suffering fans.
