Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable got some good news on Thursday when he learned that he would not face charges in connection with the accusation that he broke former assistant Randy Hanson’s jaw. But that doesn’t mean he can completely put the Hanson case behind him.
For starters, as Mike Florio previously noted, Hanson seems intent on filing a lawsuit. Indeed, Hanson’s attorney, John McGuinn, told FanHouse that the
district attorney’s decision not to file charges won’t have any impact on Hanson’s plan to file a lawsuit.
“As we have said all along, whether [the D.A.]
files or not, it makes no difference to us,” McGuinn said. “We have our civil case and
we will proceed accordingly.”
There’s also the possibility that Cable could face discipline from the league office. The NFL released a statement on Thursday saying it would review the matter, and Commissioner Roger Goodell last week left open the possibility that Cable could have violated the league’s personal conduct policy even if he didn’t break the law.
So, for Cable, the news of the day is good. That doesn’t mean the news next week won’t be bad.
Haters still clinging to their lies and innuendo, praying for a bad outcome. Schadenfreud.
Yeah, there will be an extremely weak civil case, that will be settled out of court for convenience to both parties, but I bet you Goodell stays 100 miles from this one. He has no grounds, and he better have his ducks in a row to tussel with AD.
Bottom line, Scoreboard.
Well even the DA basically said Cable was responsible for the injury. He tried to hedge by saying Hanson had his feet propped up but Cable threatened Hanson, move towards him and it was the result of that movement that caused Hanson’s broken jaw.
I don’t know what California’s work comp rules are, or how that affects the Raiders.
The NFL will have to do something about “workplace violence” or their insurance carrier will go crazy. My guess is that they will simply issue a sternly worded warning.
The difficulty the NFL faces is that the players will see any lack of action against Cable as hypocritical considering all of the fines issued against players.
If Hanson’s injury was an accident, what about defensive players accidentally making contact with a quarterback?
The NFL should create a four-person fact-finding commission composed of two league representatives and two representatives from the NFLPA. The NFL should compel cooperation with the commission. The commission should investigate and release a public report.
Maybe that glass-jawed sissy would feel safe working for the Titans. Nobody fights on that team, except Keith Bullock!
Hell……People have sued when they spill a hot cup of coffee on their dumb asses…..This is hardly news…Did this lawyer make these comments while chasing an ambulance?
Im so tired of hearing about Cable. If I was Hanson I would break Cable’s jaw and call it a day.
DUH!! By the way is also possible that Cable will file a suit against jaw boy.
So, Michael Smith, you are choosing to continue the “pot-stirring”. No charges filed, the D.A. states Hanson contradicted himself numerous times, there is not a shred of evidence that Cable physically touched Hanson, yet your report here almost reads as YOU begging for the NFL to do SOMETHING based on nothing. Hanson of course is free to file a civil lawsuit but in light of this investigation, one would wonder what NEW evidence he could bring to the table, against Cable. LOL. (Sorry, couldn’t resist that one.)
Anyway, why not leave the story where the D.A. and NFL left it and ONLY go back if anything NEW happens? Why continue trying to MAKE something out of NOTHING? Why not end your report with the next-t0-last statement? (So, for Cable, the news of the day is good.) Slow news day?
I’ll try not to fall off my chair…
Nothing will happen. How bout them Raidazzz!!
Isn’t the term “league discipline” an oxymoron?
Where is the Nancy Gay Story? That’s go back and read her breaking news on Cable. I bet we all get a good laugh.
“In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a
shame, two is a law firm and three or more is a congress” – John Adams
What jumps out is the multiple accounts Hanson gave of the same incident. The D.A. carefully chronicles how Hanson changed his story over time. They even brought Hanson back in yesterday to give him a chance to resolve the inconsistencies, to no avail.
A prosecutor has zero chance of success when the victim has changed his story several times.
How is the NFL going to discipline Cable? Against which set of facts? It’s true, Hanson has laid out a Chinese menu of facts to choose from. But I somehow doubt that the NFL works that way.
leatherneck:
Using your line of reasoning, every time a player accidently runs into an official, there should be a suspension. And if the official is injured, there should be charges filed against the player. Right (rolling eyes)!
Being a level-headed, well-behaved woman, I hate to go all Neanderthal, but this is making me long for the Old West when men just whacked each other, dusted themselves off, and went their separate ways. You mouth off in a tense situation, your coach lunges for you, and you fall out of your chair and crack your jaw. The cops say there’s nothing to it, but you’re going to sue anyway. It just sounds so whiny and … sissified.
I’m not saying people should get physical to settled their differences, but if Cable had hit Hanson … I’d understand.
Great reporting right from the start. Almost everyone had Cable guilty and in prison right up until those nasty little facts thing came up and ruined everything. Watching the NFL network they seemed disappointed in the D.A. report probably having to scrap all the stories they had planned for trashing the Raiders. Good to see that justice can still be served by our legal system rather than the lynch mobs. Now all the Raiders have to do is go out and win about four or five games in a row and really piss off the sports media .
Using PFT’s rational every time players push and shove each other on the field or in the locker room they would be subject to suspension. If that is true then every player might be suspended by the end of the year.
What is your guys obsession with negative press against the Oakland Raiders. This went through the legal system and no charges against Tom Cable. Now leave the guy alone!
It’s almost like there is hourly updates on this subject. Like: NO NEWS YET ON CABLE. or CABLE SCTATCHED HIS BUTT, POSSIBLE CHARGES PENDING.
Until there is REAL news, leave the subject or any subject alone for that matter.
Why don’t you change to your obsession or BROMANCE with Brady or Farve instead
I don’t understand the love for Coach Cable. What has he done?
People are all over the Hoodie if he doesn’t shake hands after a game but this guy held a coaches’ meeting in which one coach left the meeting with a broken jaw.
if hanson’s lawsuit was up for grabs, lawyers would kill each other to get a chance at this lawsuit.just on the basis of hostile work environment is enough to get a slam dunk on this suit.imagine if the suit was tried in a federal court in san francisco,my god, that touchy feely group would award hanson the frannchise.
This may be a question for Florio, but of the information available between Hanson v. Cable, would Cable/Raiders have a valid motion under FRCP 11 for sanctions against any attorney that would file the civil complaint for Hanson? Not sure on the elements of battery in California but usually having a harmful/offensive contact that resulted in injury is the basis of a claim, if there wasn’t contact how can their be a claim?
Sorry Patsfan you apparently your logic boards have short circuited. It is not love of Cable but love of justice. Also if you can find the articles that displayed all of this so called love of Cable please forward them to me since almost everything I read had him guilty and jailed. Hoodie was at least proven guilty of the charges of cheating leveled against him. Cable was convicted as soon as the story broke.
Roger, just because your name is spelled with the letters god doesn’t mean you are one. Dude is pansey you got beat up & you were Al’s little snitch & it backfired on you. If you were truly a man, you would own up to it move on. Hanson is a little weasel.
As far as the league is concerned, I’m not sure they can do to much to Cable. No way they can suspend him, maybe a fine and mandatory anger management classes, but I don’t think anything else would/could happen.
