Browns cornerback Eric Wright flipped over in his Mercedes several times in a one-car accident Friday morning, according to Cleveland police.
Florio wrote this morning that Wright escaped serious injury, and he has since been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. A police spokesman said this afternoon that Wright is “lucky to be alive.”
“It was a blessing that I came out period, really,” Wright said. “It puts
a lot of stuff in perspective for me and it’s definitely a huge event
in my life at this point. Luckily I’m here to see y’all.”
The police said that Wright probably would have died if he wasn’t for his safety belt. They also said they had no cause to suspect Wright was drinking or under the influence of drugs.
“I was very sober,” Wright said.
Wright hasn’t been cited for the one-car crash and Browns coach Eric Mangini won’t discipline him for being out so late. (The accident happened at 2:10 in the morning.) If he’s feeling healthy enough, Wright will start against the Packers Sunday.
Hey sometimes accidents happen. And who is Eric Mangini to discipline an adult for doing what he wants in his off hours? Short of there being a clause in his contract saying he can’t do certain things, discipline wouldn’t have stuck.
Wright did nothing illegal except driving too fast for conditions. I’m assuming it was rainy and he just lost control of the car.
That’s great news… but what happened? Cars just don’t “flip over.” I know. I’ve been driving for a lot of years and my car has never flipped.
I’ll be curious to hear the explanation on this one.
Seriously, thank God he’s okay, and I do believe he was sober. But, it’s like the Big Tuna says, nothing good happens after midnight.
what a city, what a franchise, just glad he wasnt seriously hurt. Hint to Lerner, move to LA.
Well he has branded himself as either a dumb person or a liar.
“very sober”?….hmmm…
He’s either lying about the degree of his intoxication, or he is admitting that he was intoxicated at some level with the word “very” (which prompts a f/u question to ascertain at what level he was intoxicated), or he is a real dumb person for how he chooses to speak. You have to pick at least one of these 3 choices.
Too bad (________) wasn’t riding with him.
Fill in the blank.
Obviously the adrenaline is still pumping.
When he realizes he still plays for the Browns, he’ll start shaking and crying.
He was probably coming back to the hizzy after performing a little “service work.” Let’s leave the guy alone. He didn’t hurt anybody else…
Glad he didn’t hit anyone else.
Wear your seat belts, kids.
D* mn I had money on him coming back as a Pigeon.
That’s great news… but what happened? Cars just don’t “flip over.” I know. I’ve been driving for a lot of years and my car has never flipped.
I’ll be curious to hear the explanation on this one.

Wet road and he was speeding, never a good combo.
Though he won’t be cited, WOIO reports that the police determined Wright was driving too fast under wet and slippery conditions.

Not enough info to really comment on whether he was stupid or not. That’s even true about ridicule about his very sober comment. I’ve heard that used many times meaning “I’ve had nothing to drink.”
But really, “no one got hurt so give the guy a break?” No, give the guy a break if it was just an accident caused by a simple error or mis-judgment. He gets no break from me if he was acting recklessly and putting himself and others at risk and just got lucky no one got hurt. If I’m on the road with a dangerous driver, I want the driver punished for putting me at risk of getting injured. I dont want him punished only after his actions cause me injury. I and everyone else should be free to drive the roads without some yahoo making it un-neccesarily dangerous. Punish the people who put us in danger and less of us will suffer injury.
Opposite is also true, leave the guy alone who hurts me, but was not acting wreckless.
I will say from the info we have, it appears Eric Wright justg had a simple accident and was not wreckless.
Let’s see. Fast car, incident happened early a.m., alcohol was not involved. Hell I think we got the second coming of Nick Hogan. Good thing there wasn’t a passenger in the car.
How was he not charged. I thought that any time there is an accident that police have to respond to, they almost certainly have to write a ticket, especially if the guy flipped his car. So unless the guy strained his shoulder after his car broke down, got pissed off, turned into the Incredible Hulk, picked the car up and through it on its roof (could explain the strained shoulder), there should probably be some sort of charge here: Reckless driving is usually the charge.
Also, somebody claiming to be “very sober” is very different that saying they are “completely sober.” Very is a word that expresses the opinion of the user, how do we know that Wright’s “very” isn’t somebody else’s “mostly or nearly” or the law’s definition of “not”?
Maybe a Browns or Fresno St. fan can help me here, but as I recall, Wright came into the league with a ton of baggage. I can’t remember if his baggage was due to injuries in college or the trouble he got into while in college. Anybody care to fill us in?
