Raiders try to keep Michael Silver out

Several weeks ago, the Oakland Raiders expressed a desire to ban former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon from the team’s headquarters for production meetings in preparation for a game that Gannon would be broadcasting for CBS.

The team quickly relented, but Gannon ultimately didn’t show, citing travel difficulties.

This time around, Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports encountered difficulty in obtaining a credential for Sunday’s game between the Raiders and the Jets.

Silver tells us that a request was made on his behalf on October 18.  Today, his editor was told that there will be not enough room in the press box.

Silver suspects that the team’s position was motivated by his reporting on the Randy Hanson situation.  Silver’s most recent article includes Hanson’s reaction to the decision of the Napa prosecutor to not charge Raiders coach Tom Cable for the incident that resulted in Hanson suffering a broken jaw.

The article was published Friday, and the response to Silver’s request for access came after the article appeared at the Yahoo! web site.

Previously, Silver interviewed Hanson, who shared his version of the events with Silver, including an alleged threat from Cable that he would “kill” Hanson.  After word emerged that the other assistants who witnessed the incident between Cable and Hanson had not corroborated Hanson’s version, Hanson told Silver that he would take a lie detector test.

It’s not the first time that Silver has been denied access by the Raiders.

“I was banned from the
Raiders’ facility on several occasions in the ’90s,” Silver told us via e-mail.  “Once at Arrowhead
Stadium the team prevented me from entering the visitors’ locker room
after a game.  Al Davis was later fined $10,000.”

This time around, Silver promptly solicited the assistance of the PFWA and the NFL.  And Silver tells us that, after the league got involved, the Raiders relented.

Unlike Gannon, however, we suspect that Silver will show.

And if Raiders executive John Herrera is hanging around, the action in the press box could ultimately be as compelling as the stuff that happens on the field.

Our only hope is that no one falls down and, you know, breaks his jaw.

Silver is a douchebag! He has ties to the Bay Area, and is very biased in his articles to the San Francisco teams. I’m glad that moron got turned down.

    Jeez, Florio…
It took you guys over seven hour to have another negative story about the Raiders. Slow day huh?
    Silver is a tool anyway….

Notice how the lawyer says no discouraging words about the sissy who couldn’t keep his story straight enough to make a case, but continues to, you know, insinuate.

I hope Al Davis falls down and breaks his jaw…..and does not ever get back up! Freakin disgraceful. What happened to my Raiders? Dear Santa, I would like a time machine for Christmas this year.

Oh boy another reporter promotes himself as the story. Silver gets his 10 minutes of fame…
On the “Hanson is willing to take a lie detector test” front…that has to be the biggest load of pure crap since Kris Jenkins flushed his toilet.
If we accepted the results of lie detectors, the Green River Killer would be a free man today. I would rather take my chances letting Hanson get grilled for five minutes by Dr Cal Lightman.
A good lawyer could tell us all about lie detectors here.

Learning from the Obama Administration I see. Pretty soon they’ll try to define who is and is not, a sports reporter.

  8. RTM77 says: Oct 23, 2009 7:51 PM

Honestly, if you’re Big Al why would you send a limo, roll out the red carpet and kiss Silvers @$$ after years of his BS about the Raiders? His hack job with Hanson as “victim” probably made the DA’s case for him. (Hmmm, and when it get’s close to crunch time Hanson shows up and wants to cooperate fully because The Raiders “won’t give me what I want” – there’s credibility for ya.) I want a “reporter” using a guy like this to write a story about my team and coach for a nationwide audience in my pressbox? Please. Maybe the NFL could police some of the reporters (Calling Nancy Gay to the white courtesy phone please…) as closely as they do the uniforms on Sunday and we wouldn’t have dirtbag hacks like Silver around to feed BS like this to all of us. (WOW, there’s a run on sentence!)
I mean, think about this for a second… What if your team pisses him off… What is he gonna make up, err I mean write about you?

  9. IWanttoPunchFloriointheFace says: Oct 23, 2009 7:56 PM

Flowerio – Silver’s a douche, Nancy Gay is a douche and you’re a douche for continually posting crap about the Raider organization. Enough with the John Herrera and ‘broken jaw’ attempts at humor – you’re not funny and it’s over already. Just let it go…
When are you going to admit your mistake in posting blatant lies regarding the whole Cable fiasco? Yeah, we know never – because you think you’re always right and you always believe what the Silvers and Gays of the media world fabricate based upon their ‘sources’.
And once and for all as many people have tried to explain to your ignorant ass on many occasions, Hanson’s jaw was fractured – not broken…there is a medical difference and maybe you can actually do some research on that (something that seems to allude your journalism technique).

As a Raider fan it makes me cringe when I hear they tried to ban Rich Gannon, but with this Silver dude, he is the king of all douche bags and I dont blame them at all, it really pisses me off when a pussy like Silver who has probably has never put on a football uniform on (except maybe while jacking off) writes these really critical rants about the Raiders and other teams and players. And whats up with these songs he makes up for teams, absolute trash, I am glad I am not a pro football player who has access to this guy he would wish he was banned from the team facility.

  16. City_Native says: Oct 23, 2009 8:17 PM

If the Raiders worried about their team as much as they worried about the media . . . they wouldnt be the worst team in the last six years and the laughingstock of the league.
Cant wait til Crabtree gets more catches this Sunday than “more names than catches” has on the year.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/23/white-house-loses-bid-exclude-fox-news-pay-czar-interview/
Which is it, are the raiders bumbling idiots or not? If they are, they appear to have a lot in common with the current administration which is also sporting about a 2-4 record so far.

  21. tnsteve says: Oct 23, 2009 8:40 PM

    Florio –
Silver is a douchebag. He was blatantly wrong in his article last week where he totally insinuated that Hanson was innocent and Cable was Satan.
The Raiders are just sticking it to Silver for being a lying prick.
Maybe if Silver wouldve done the right thing after the news broke yesterday and apologized to Cable, all would be well. Instead, the Raiders had to punish the wimp a little bit.
Good for them. Just win, baby.

  27. Scoop says: Oct 23, 2009 9:43 PM

NFL media V. Raiders sort of has that bin Ladin V. Hussien vibe. You hope each can land a simultaneous lethal blow, thus saving the NFL from constant peril.
It’s hard to pick a favorite– the Gumpian caucus called the PFWA; or the just get-worse-and-more-embarrassing, baby, Raiders.
I guess in this analogy, North Korea would be represented by Raider fans. Menacing and loud, but difficult to view with anything but bemused pity…

Funny how the losers on here complain about Obama and call him a commie, yet at the EXACT SAME F’N TIME bash Florio and Silver for posting a report on how the Raaaaidaaah’s embarassment of an organization is finger painting baby poop on something defined as “freedom of the press” in my beloved constitution.
Clearly, the Raaaaidaaah’s were in the wrong, considering Silver got his credential. Suddenly, there IS space in the press box!
Gotta love how the constitution hating part of my country likes to consider itself the patriots of our beautiful nation.
But, hey, because of that wonderful little document(read it some time, what you’re looking for is in the first sentence of the first amendment((I know how much you hate to read, and only elitists and celebrities read.))) you jerkoffs have a right to be contradictory to your own damn selves.

Silver may be bias towards SF teams. I dont blame him. SF teams are run with class and run things the right way. Oakland A’s always get rid of their top talent and average 8,000+ a game. Raiders seem to keep stepn on themselves with poor decisions and have a thin petty front office.
Oakland do something positive, SO you would’nt have to worry bout a douche like Silver being forced to write negative articles. ITS HIS JOB!

    ===================================
That’s exactly what it’s become, encinitasraider.
Florio deliberately post bullcrap and the sheep come running, all in the name of ratings.
What Florio doesn’t see though is that eventually he’ll jump the shark, and leave the back door open for a new CREDIBLE football site.

  39. Dave The Dude says: Oct 24, 2009 6:21 AM

Wow. I’m surprised Florio hasn’t yet written a piece covering the countless great players and coaches that have been alienated by the Raiders since Al Davis started riding the short bus back in the late-80’s.
Perhaps because there’s just so many: Stabler, Allen, Tim Brown, Gannon, Sapp, Gruden, Turner, Shell, Kiffen, now Hanson… and I’m sure I’m missing many more. I know there were rumors that Madden left on bad terms but was too professional to talk about it. We won’t even go into the insane anti-media paranoia, and the lawsuits against the NFL.
I’m not sure what’s more disturbing: how many of those alienated players/coaches are wearing SuperBowl rings (and/or are in the HOF), or how few quality players and rings there have been since Davis decided to take over full-time as GM.
Unfortunately for you Raiders fans, he’s not going anywhere: it’s 2 SuperBowls OR over his dead body, and that’s the only way he’s going to give up that GM role. It’s really gotta suck to be a Raiders fan. As long as Davis’ insane hatred and paranoia keeps his artificial heart pumping, that team has ZERO chance to ever seriously contend and will continue to be the laughing-stock of the NFL.
As a Seahawks fan who was at the Colliseum on January 8th 1984, my hatred for the Raiders used to run very very deep. I never cared about the Broncos, it was the Raiders I hated. It was fun for a while. Then Crazy Al started calling Marcus Allen a “cancer” and it was just all down-hill from there. I would be as happy as any Raiders fan if that team could finally make itself worthy of hatred again.
Someone, PLEASE, throw Crazy Al in a retirement home so we can get back to some real football! And this is coming from a hardcore devoted lifelong Seahawks fan!!

  40. Dave The Dude says: Oct 24, 2009 6:38 AM

    @WashingtonRedstorms:
There is no way LA would take the Raiders back. Not if Al Davis is involved with the team.

  41. Snowman2008 says: Oct 24, 2009 7:08 AM

What is wrong with Raiders fans? They continue to support a team that is a total joke outside the Bay Area.
Good owners concentrate of fixing their teams not the reporters.
Davis should alter that logo. But patches over both eyes and duct tape over the mouth.

  42. VonClausewitz says: Oct 24, 2009 9:51 AM

All you’re watching here is the demise of a once great franchise driven down by paranoia and greed. This is compelling stuff. There used to be a time when Al Davis was arguably the most important figure in pro football. One could even argue most important figure in the history of pro football. That’s how trail blazing this guy is. So to watch it fall replete with greedy yes men and other dodgy enablers is as much a spectacle as its historic rise ever was. If Al wanted to correct the collapse he would have opened up about JawGate, KiffinGate and all of the other ugly happenings in Raiderville. He’d let the Michael Silvers and Nancy Gays in like a Raider Perestroika. And maybe then he’d be able to find honest friends to help turn things around instead of having to buy self-serving, talentless sycophants who are more intent upon getting paid than restoring the franchise.

  43. ConorMalone says: Oct 24, 2009 11:21 AM

Wasn’t it Silver who helped you out with the Superbowl Live Blog in January? Figure you must owe him Florio – first the unwarranted praise for a one-sided article from a plaintiff with credibility issues and now this. If it was any other journo the entry would read like this:
Yahoo! sports journalist and alleged smokin’ pot smokin’ buddy of Tim Kawakami Mike Silver just doesn’t know when to stop digging. Two weeks ago Silver decided to run with one side and one side only of a classic ‘he said she said story’ and gave a national platform to the Walter Mittyesque ramblings of Randy Hanson. Last thursdays statement by the Napa DAs office dismissing the assault case against Raiders head coach Tom Cable surely is as embarassing to Silver as it is to Hanson.
But, instead of laying low, in a week featuring match-ups like Bengals v Bears, Vikings v Steelers, NO v Miami, Cardinals v Giants and Falcons v Cowboys, the game that Silver absolutely, positively has to attend is the 3-3 Jets at the 2-4 Raiders.
Following the Raiders attempt to ban Rich Gannon from the press box Silver obviously knows what the Raiders reaction is going to be. Indeed this anticipated reaction is Silvers sole reason for attending. Cue the faux indignation as the Raiders refuse him entry. In doing so Silver is falling into the classic journalist ego trap of trying to make the news instead of reporting the news from, you know, a game that might actually have implications for who’s still playing in January.
In actual fact Al Davis should be welcoming Silver with open arms – having Randy Hansons ramblings on Yahoo! surely didn’t go down to well with the Napa DA and may well have contributed to the case being thrown out.
Oh and Mike, in future if you poke a beehive with a stick, don’t pretend to be surprised when you’re faced with a horde of angry bees.

  44. 1nationraidernation says: Oct 24, 2009 11:53 AM

I don’t blame the raiders, i would keep the puke out of my house as well, if all he ever said about me was a bunch of crap…but that would mean you would have to keep 90% of the media out.
