Wasn’t it Silver who helped you out with the Superbowl Live Blog in January? Figure you must owe him Florio – first the unwarranted praise for a one-sided article from a plaintiff with credibility issues and now this. If it was any other journo the entry would read like this:
Yahoo! sports journalist and alleged smokin’ pot smokin’ buddy of Tim Kawakami Mike Silver just doesn’t know when to stop digging. Two weeks ago Silver decided to run with one side and one side only of a classic ‘he said she said story’ and gave a national platform to the Walter Mittyesque ramblings of Randy Hanson. Last thursdays statement by the Napa DAs office dismissing the assault case against Raiders head coach Tom Cable surely is as embarassing to Silver as it is to Hanson.
But, instead of laying low, in a week featuring match-ups like Bengals v Bears, Vikings v Steelers, NO v Miami, Cardinals v Giants and Falcons v Cowboys, the game that Silver absolutely, positively has to attend is the 3-3 Jets at the 2-4 Raiders.
Following the Raiders attempt to ban Rich Gannon from the press box Silver obviously knows what the Raiders reaction is going to be. Indeed this anticipated reaction is Silvers sole reason for attending. Cue the faux indignation as the Raiders refuse him entry. In doing so Silver is falling into the classic journalist ego trap of trying to make the news instead of reporting the news from, you know, a game that might actually have implications for who’s still playing in January.
In actual fact Al Davis should be welcoming Silver with open arms – having Randy Hansons ramblings on Yahoo! surely didn’t go down to well with the Napa DA and may well have contributed to the case being thrown out.
Oh and Mike, in future if you poke a beehive with a stick, don’t pretend to be surprised when you’re faced with a horde of angry bees.

All you’re watching here is the demise of a once great franchise driven down by paranoia and greed. This is compelling stuff. There used to be a time when Al Davis was arguably the most important figure in pro football. One could even argue most important figure in the history of pro football. That’s how trail blazing this guy is. So to watch it fall replete with greedy yes men and other dodgy enablers is as much a spectacle as its historic rise ever was. If Al wanted to correct the collapse he would have opened up about JawGate, KiffinGate and all of the other ugly happenings in Raiderville. He’d let the Michael Silvers and Nancy Gays in like a Raider Perestroika. And maybe then he’d be able to find honest friends to help turn things around instead of having to buy self-serving, talentless sycophants who are more intent upon getting paid than restoring the franchise.

Wow. I’m surprised Florio hasn’t yet written a piece covering the countless great players and coaches that have been alienated by the Raiders since Al Davis started riding the short bus back in the late-80′s.
Perhaps because there’s just so many: Stabler, Allen, Tim Brown, Gannon, Sapp, Gruden, Turner, Shell, Kiffen, now Hanson… and I’m sure I’m missing many more. I know there were rumors that Madden left on bad terms but was too professional to talk about it. We won’t even go into the insane anti-media paranoia, and the lawsuits against the NFL.
I’m not sure what’s more disturbing: how many of those alienated players/coaches are wearing SuperBowl rings (and/or are in the HOF), or how few quality players and rings there have been since Davis decided to take over full-time as GM.
Unfortunately for you Raiders fans, he’s not going anywhere: it’s 2 SuperBowls OR over his dead body, and that’s the only way he’s going to give up that GM role. It’s really gotta suck to be a Raiders fan. As long as Davis’ insane hatred and paranoia keeps his artificial heart pumping, that team has ZERO chance to ever seriously contend and will continue to be the laughing-stock of the NFL.
As a Seahawks fan who was at the Colliseum on January 8th 1984, my hatred for the Raiders used to run very very deep. I never cared about the Broncos, it was the Raiders I hated. It was fun for a while. Then Crazy Al started calling Marcus Allen a “cancer” and it was just all down-hill from there. I would be as happy as any Raiders fan if that team could finally make itself worthy of hatred again.
Someone, PLEASE, throw Crazy Al in a retirement home so we can get back to some real football! And this is coming from a hardcore devoted lifelong Seahawks fan!!

Silver may be bias towards SF teams. I dont blame him. SF teams are run with class and run things the right way. Oakland A’s always get rid of their top talent and average 8,000+ a game. Raiders seem to keep stepn on themselves with poor decisions and have a thin petty front office.
Oakland do something positive, SO you would’nt have to worry bout a douche like Silver being forced to write negative articles. ITS HIS JOB!

Silver is a douchebag. He was blatantly wrong in his article last week where he totally insinuated that Hanson was innocent and Cable was Satan.
The Raiders are just sticking it to Silver for being a lying prick.
Maybe if Silver wouldve done the right thing after the news broke yesterday and apologized to Cable, all would be well. Instead, the Raiders had to punish the wimp a little bit.
