Rex Ryan says he won't tolerate penalties

The New York Jets got overtime off to a bad start in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, with a personal foul penalty on the overtime kickoff that got James Ihedigbo ejected and five more penalties in overtime of a game the Jets would ultimately lose.

Jets coach Rex Ryan says he's mad as hell and not going to take penalties anymore. So Ryan is going old school in practice, forcing any player who gets flagged for a penalty to run a sprint or do up-downs.

The Jets have been flagged for 44 penalties, fourth-most in the league. Ryan says he doesn't want to coach a team that's close to the lead league in flags.

"That's not the way we're going to play football and I won't tolerate it," Ryan said. "We want to be the most physical team in the NFL, but within the confines of the rules."

Ryan said he considered cutting both Ihedigbo and Marques Murrell, who was involved in the skirmish that got Ihedigbo ejected. Instead, he said he'll bench both this week, and let them know that they've run out of second chances.

Get tough, Rex! You don't want to get a rep like the Raiders, do you?

  2. FireJerryJones says: October 23, 2009 3:02 PM

I'd like to see Rex run a few laps.

Doesn't take huge stones to bench a guy like Ihedigbo...

I see the Jets beating the Raiders 3 - 2

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really getting tired of the Jets passive/aggressive sh**. Verbal throwdowns with the Dolphins and winning the SB in week 2, followed by the humiliation of a three game losing streak (culminating in the Bills, the BILLS!) and now this?

Rex Ryan makes Wade Phillips look like Vince Lombardi

If you only have one "won't tolerate" then you should use on something more important. How about "won't tolerate 6 INTs"?

  5. bluenoser says: October 23, 2009 3:12 PM

Rex Ryan is a blowhard and has no balls. What a clown. I feel sorry for R-A-T-S fans. Great market, passionate fans and who wouldn't want to play there. Unfortunately they are mismanaged and hbe to play in the same division as the greatest team in the history of football.

Let's hope Thomas Jones doesn't suit up for the game as well. Maybe Rex will get hungry on the long cross country plane ride and eat him..........

    Go Raiders!

"......and for every penalty you guys commit, I'm obviously going to eat an extra five dozen donuts. Do you hear me?"

The Jets are poor-man's Ravens. They have some talent, but no bonafide superstars.

Most of all, they lack the killer instinct of Ray Ray in their LB corp.

Mike McCarthy - take note, then get back to adjusting that pad level.

  10. Tdk24 says: October 23, 2009 3:14 PM

This is a story? I have never heard a coach say that he does tolerate penalties.

Maybe you're next article with be titled..."Jauron won't tolerate drops" or "Fans won't tolerate refs blowing calls" or "Readers tolerate articles about coaches not tolerating things that should not be tolerated by coaches"

Hope you enjoyed that September Super Bowl Jets fans. Your done. Doesn't matter how mad the fattest coach in the NFL gets.

  13. ftomeo says: October 23, 2009 3:23 PM

Doing sprints, up-downs, or shuttle runs is old school? I thought it was standard practice procedure for most teams.

  14. JSpicoli says: October 23, 2009 3:24 PM

    They play like their coach.

  15. Babie Hoodie says: October 23, 2009 3:25 PM

He also won't tolerate losing to bad teams, but they are pretty good at doing that also.

  16. Fan_Of_ Four says: October 23, 2009 3:25 PM

Mad as hell and won't tolerate it anymore ?

Hmmm, somebody should introduce Rex to Green Bay's Mikey " Mindset" McCarthy. The Slackers are en-route to breaking the all time record for penalties.

At least your Slackers are leading in something eh " Mikey Mindset"

    As opposed to which coach...?

  18. leatherneck says: October 23, 2009 3:33 PM

The vaunted Jets blitzing defense has 5 sacks on the year.

I don't think the problem they have is penalties.

Rex Ryan does have a point, though. For one thing, if you are going to throw a punch on an NFL gridiron, throwing the punch at someone called "Fine" is just asking for trouble.

Yeah Art Shell did this too.... look where it got him

  20. RK says: October 23, 2009 3:48 PM

Wait? What? I thought he was the 'anti-Mangini' and was lauded for not doing things like Mangini does in training camp - like making players run a lap whenever they commit a penalty?

  21. rodstiffington says: October 23, 2009 3:48 PM

How refreshing as a Browns fan to see Braylon drop, what 2-3 passes?
Oh by the way, I thought Pencil Dick and Dirty Sanchize were the 2nd coming. What happened?

  22. finsbooyah says: October 23, 2009 3:51 PM

The behavior of the players reflects that of the head coach... What's the over/under on how long it takes before Rex throws a punch? If they keep losing, I'd say 4 games.

  23. denverpilot says: October 23, 2009 4:10 PM

The good news is that he tolerates turnovers. OVER-RATED!

  24. lebowski says: October 23, 2009 4:14 PM

In a related note, Mike McCarthy tells his team he won't tolerate anything over 10 penalties a game.

  25. jamaicamecrazy says: October 23, 2009 4:20 PM

Only for penalties? What about interceptions? How many more interceptions will Rex Ryan allow before he benches Sanchez? Will Sanchez have to run sprints or do up-downs for each interception he throws?

  26. CliveRush says: October 23, 2009 4:35 PM

Rex is now going to discipline players for performing the very acts he encouraged them to do. Sounds like he could use some professional dog training tips. He will get bit in the rear end by one of these suckalicious players before the end of the year. Why do these bums get the amount of coverage that better teams don't get but deserve? They have accomplished nothing for generations.

  29. Drat says: October 23, 2009 4:59 PM

Bad signs from NY. Rex was in this love-fest with his players early on, talking tough regarding the opposition, everyone bonding, emotional unity. Now that he has discovered the players actually flork up and ruin his beautiful vision, he's going punitive. No m&m's for you anymore. Do pushups. Suffer for making Rex angry. Bad bad players, he says, with the newspaper rolled up, banishing them to the backyard.

Oops, there goes all that idealism.

  32. Ken1313 says: October 23, 2009 7:08 PM

Rex Ryan will ALSO not tolerate anyone cutting him in the post game buffet line...fines will be handed out dammit !!

  33. CTifer says: October 23, 2009 7:13 PM

It's only a matter of time until he imposes a penalty of having to fight him if they get flagged during a game.

  34. db3300 says: October 23, 2009 7:34 PM

As someone who has run his fair share of sprints and 'hills' in his younger days, I don't recall punishment ever having an effect on reducing penalties. It did have an effect on those asking the coach asking if we had to practice in the rain.

  35. RayDaMayor says: October 23, 2009 7:40 PM

Rex will send over 12 Triple Meat Cheese Whoppers from BK to Ihedigbo's and Murrell will meet there too after the loss to the Raida's.

Rex told the guys 8 of the Whoppers are for him and if the guys dig into Rex's share he will cut them on the spot.

Rex for King baby!!! By the way, Rex doesn't give a crap what you fools think of his big mouth.

Seeing as the Jets readilly admit they played their "Super Bowl" in September, is it any wonder that the team is exhausted and making errors in October?

Ryan had these guys "peaking" in June when he and the team couldn't get enough trash talking in. Too bad for the Jets he didn't save some of that energy for the regular season.

  41. Backinthesaddle says: October 23, 2009 10:58 PM

Those thugs mugged that guy. I bet if you strip searched them you would have found illegal hand guns too. They deserved to be penalized with misconduct penalties....absolutely.

Anything that goes badly for the Jets I'm all for.
