Chiefs cut sixth-round pick

Coming out of McNeese State in this year’s NFL draft, Quinten Lawrence looked like an intriguing prospect: He was raw, but he had blazing speed and looked like he might be able to contribute at wide receiver, or at cornerback, or as a kick returner.

The Kansas City Chiefs took a flier on Lawrence in the sixth round, but it hasn’t worked out: Lawrence rarely got on the field except on special teams — and was mediocre there — and now the Chiefs have cut him.

With the roster spot freed up by cutting Lawrence, the Chiefs promoted wide receiver Lance Long from the practice squad. Long will get a shot returning kicks, where the Chiefs’ otherwise solid special teams have struggled this season.

If Lawrence clears waivers, he’ll be eligible to join the Chiefs’ practice squad.

Lance Long is a great name, up there with Rod Biggs.

Raw. Blazing speed. No true position. Not proven to have NFL talent.
How did he get past the Raiders in the 3rd round?
