Bucs dealing with the realities of online bulletin boards

Like most if not all NFL teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a bulletin board feature on their official web site, allowing fans to post messages and otherwise interact.

For the bad teams, “interaction” quickly becomes “venting.”
And the fans of the Bucs are venting by applying an unflattering nickname to first-year coach Raheem Morris.
Per JoeBucsFan.com, they’re calling Morris “Radio,” the title character of a movie in which Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays a developmentally disabled man who finds acceptance with a local high school football team.
And now the moderator of the Buccaneers’ bulletin board has asked fans to stop using the name.
Which, of course, will only cause them to use it more aggressively.
But here’s the reality — if you’re going to have a bulletin board or a comments section and you want to keep the people who visit it from using certain terms or names, the only alternative to screening the submitted content by hand is to not have a bulletin board or a comments section at all.
Or to grow thicker skin.
As anyone who peruses from time to time the PFT comments, you’ll realize that we’ve opted generally for door number three.
And I’m glad we did.  Otherwise, I never would have known that my last name can be twisted into so many, um, colorful alternatives.
UPDATE:  As one of our media friends points out, it’s also possible that the “Radio” nickname comes from the “Radio Raheem” character in Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing.  But if that’s the case we’re not sure why the team would be troubled by the use of it — unless there was general concern that some would assume the term relates to the Cuba Gooding, Jr. character.

Crap. We could have been calling Florio Radio all this time!
    Damn you, Bucs fans!

Florio this is great that you acknowledge such a thick skin. Although as a Vikings fan I don’t appreciate a lot of the Favre comments, it’s still a blog–therefore giving you rights to say whatever you want.

I just picked my nose and flicked a Florio off my finger.
Testing commences on door number three…

  4. Citizen Strange says: Oct 27, 2009 2:56 PM

Or ….. and this might seem a little crazy after your well thought out reasoning ….
They could be calling him — Radio Raheem — after the character in Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” just like I have bee calling him that on these boards ever since he was hired by the Bucs.

  5. leatherneck says: Oct 27, 2009 2:58 PM

NFL teams really should not have their own bulletin boards. It might start off nice. Then eventually creeps show up and ruin it. It’s not worth it.

I still prefer my nickname of “Simple Jack” for David Garrard. Nice guy but….not the sharpest QB.

  8. teke184 says: Oct 27, 2009 2:59 PM

It’s probably a double-nickname. Not just “Radio” as in the Cuba Gooding Jr. role but also “Radio Raheem”, as in a character from Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing”.
    Neither one is a compliment.

  9. lilmidas50 says: Oct 27, 2009 3:01 PM

is florio serious????? im not from tampa or anything , but im pretty sure it’s Radio Raheem from spike lee’s “Do the right thing”
i love this site…but all the errors in content by writers and florio’s super bowl prediction of the REDSKINS has me really doubting the credibilty of the stuff i read on here

  10. Levito says: Oct 27, 2009 3:02 PM

Shut up and get back to work, Florio!
On a side note, whatever happened to the ole’ “bang it here” line you used to throw out all the time?

  12. workhorse says: Oct 27, 2009 3:03 PM

Radio Raheem is from Do the Right Thing. It’s not Cuba Gooding Jr, it’s Bill Nunn. Cuba plays a game named Radio in the movie Radio, no Raheem.

It’s from “Do the Right Thing” with Spike Lee.
    There is a character
    called “Radio Raheem”.
Anybody that makes fun of disabled is completely sick.
It has nothing to do with the movie “Radio.”

It’s weird to know that in Denver it came down to McSixenO V. Morris.
Its also an interesting contrast. Morris probably would have played it by the book, brought a ‘sensible plan’ to Denver, tried to fit a bunch of round pegs in square holes while all the while pretending that the Broncos were a pass rusher away from glory in order to keep the media and the inept Denver fans off his back, kept Cutler, and Denver would be, at best, 2-4 and coming off another humiliation in SD. But everybody would be all humble and happy and crap because everybody would know that its next year that JC will morph into John Elway and start carrying us to SB glory, or close, every year.
Orton hears a WhooHooo, baby. Stick that feather up your clueless hiney, ‘Bronco Country’ and the Mr. Magooish NFL media that fed them (PFT among them).
P.S.– I really need to find a job.

I guess by “your” nickname you mean the nickname you heard the guys on 1010XL calling Del Rio?
BTW, it makes much more sense to use “Simple Jack” for Del Rio since, you know, his name is actually Jack…

The original Radio, was Vince Young
at the Red River Shut Out in 2004, I hear a fan yell, “Nice Pass Radio”. I got the domain and had a site up for a few years, and let it expire, it had great photoshopped pics of Vince as Radio.

    @ JJ Jones:
You are an ignorant person if you think David Garrard is retarded. Does he read defenses as good as Tom Brady or Peyton Manning? Of course not, but he also parlayed one great season into a $20 million dollar guaranteed contract. He is one of the most thoughtful and articulate human beings in the NFL. He is an asset to the Jaguars both on the field and off. How stupid can you be if you have a season when you throw 18 TDs and only 3 Ints? Turn off the Pete Prisco show and take off your Tebow panties.

I’m in the Tampa Bay area, and I’ve heard several “Radio” cracks about Raheem Morris that were definitely calling him retarded. I’ve also heard people say Matthew Stafford looks like “Corky” from “Life Goes On”, so what?

Florio – you idiot – the post in which you reference and the same post JoeBucsFan references was actually added on September 9th, 2009 – while it’s funny, I guess you two bozos could be a bit more timely….. This Radio thing started early and ended early and you two clowns are just now figuring it out…

  27. Opie says: Oct 27, 2009 4:04 PM

Cornflorio is one of the better one’s!
However, we do need to come up with some more “creative” names to “bang it here.”
    Like Perez Florio…..
And why can’t people make fun of the disabled? Is there a law against that? Or is it just one person’s opinion……I’ve been disabled on jager and people made fun of me?!? Wait, I didn’t like that…..so, we should just stick to making fun of idiots like Vox….

  28. JoeSchmoe says: Oct 27, 2009 4:14 PM

Radio Raheem in DTRT was also a mentally challenged character. Either way, it’s not a nice connotation to Morris.

Bucs fan right here, 26 years, using ‘Radio’ daily and using it excessivly on Sunday’s.
I chant it in the stadium, the whole damn bar chants it at Alehouse when his little picture comes up on the TV.
It has EVERYTHING to do with Cuba Gooding Jr’s movie.
Go to a game and ask some people. Why would they refer to ‘Radio Raheem’? Don’t think so.
Yes, we are that mean. You try having him as your coach. Go ahead.

Why the HELL do you THINK that?
Almost every bulletin board in EXISTENCE has a filter on it. It alters, asterisks, or throws out posts altogether that had specific words used in them.
I really don’t get why you think you have to manually censor EVERY post.

I’m not sure if anyone frequents the Buccaneer’s BBS but there was a HUGE flame war between the owner of Bucschat.com (another relatively large Buc’s forum) when he posted some Photoshop pictures his members created on the main Buc’s BBS. One was a movie poster doctored up adding Raheem’s face in place of Cuba Gooding Jr. and the other was the popular shot of Radio in a shopping cart.
The moderators at the Bucs BBS did not delete the thread, but instead let it run and it got real ugly real fast. A lot of personal information was being tossed around and the owner of Bucschat.com apparently received a lot of death threats because of it.
I personally thought the images were funny but I’m not a PC automaton that is told what is right and what is wrong. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck…
I’m not sure why they would create a rule stating that you can’t create a username or reference the coach as Radio. Get some thick skin, you’re 0-7 and you want all the fans to gather on the 50 yard line at Ray Jay and sing Kumbaya around a campfire?

  36. WashingtonRedstorms says: Oct 27, 2009 6:15 PM

Bucs fans should be concerned about this team leaving Tampa.
There is a reason this team is being run into the ground. Radio Raheem is just a tool.

  37. eaglealan64 says: Oct 27, 2009 7:09 PM

  40. Okey says: Oct 27, 2009 11:43 PM

Just because Morris is SOOOOOO atrocious at being a HC, or a coach of any kind for that matter, really doesn’t justify the reason to attack him as a person by resulting in name calling. He is CLEARLY just a guy that has chosen the WRONG career path and is learning the hard way that he needs to GET OUT NOW and find something that he IS ABLE to do RIGHT!!!

    London or L.A. Buccaneers.”
You continue to prove my point. You are in fact an idiot.
Once again you are commenting on something you know nothing about.
    1. Radio Refers to DTRT. WRONG!
    2. Bucs could leave Tampa. WRONG!
Do some research or stop commenting about a team you know NOTHING about.
In 1995, when the buccaneers asked the city of Tampa to PAY FOR Ray-Jay, they signed a 30 lease with the city to guarantee the tax payers (who paid for the stadium) that the team was going to actually stay in Tampa, and use the stadium (that we paid for).
The lease started in 1997 (bucs started there in 1998) and expires in 2027.
Also, do some research about the (7) teams who LA is pursuing to go to LA……. who’s not on that list? THE BUCS! Why? Because they cannot leave Tampa till 2027.
So, while us bucs fans rest comfortably knowing they are not going anywhere, you just continue on pretending you are some kind of reporter and keep those ‘facts’ of yours coming.

  43. bucjason says: Oct 28, 2009 3:46 PM

On my message board we call him “mushmouth” after the Fat Albert character.
