Cable talks about benching of Russell

In frank and candid terms, Raiders coach Tom Cable addressed on Monday the decision to yank quarterback JaMarcus Russell from Sunday’s loss to the Jets for Bruce Gradkowski, per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle.

The basic problem?  Failure of execution.
On the team’s first play from scrimmage, Cable dialed up a deep ball.  And Cable said that, despite days of preparation, Russell didn’t get the offense lined up properly, he ignored the check-down option when the deep routes were covered, he took a sack, and he fumbled the ball.
“You wouldn’t expect to have that kind of mental error on the first play of the game,” Cable said.
Ouch.
Cable also called out Russell for his two interceptions.  As to the first one, Cable said “[t]here wasn’t anybody there to throw the ball to.”
Ouch again.
On the second, Russell seemed to blame receiver Todd Watkins for failing to catch a ball thrown behind him.
“It’s not up for the coach and the quarterback to debate this in the media,” Cable said, “but when you see it on film, it’s pretty obvious that would have been a tough play for Superman.”
And . . . ouch.
Russell’s side of the story has not been told publicly; he’s scheduled to address the media on Thursday.  But it’s clear that the Raiders are taking a new approach with the first overall pick in the 2007 draft.
If public humiliation generated by his head coach won’t force the light to finally come on, then it’s fair to conclude that there’s simply no switch.

Russell still doesn’t get it. He blames everyone but himself. Yes, the receivers have dropped balls, but as a QB he has to prove he’s a leader which he fails to do. It’s about time someone takes a stand with him. He’s fat, lazy and apparently doesn’t do his homework when it comes to reading defenses. It seems the defenses he plays against has more receptions than the Raiders receivers…….The season is shot because of his stupid mistakes, bad judgement and executions. I’ve been a die hard fan of the Raiders for many years, but Russell just takes the cake when it comes to losers. I’m looking forward to the 2010 draft now. Bring back Marc Wilson. I thought he was bad.

Is it possible to get a negative score on the Wonderlic? I bet JaMarcus got one. He’s so dumb, he doesn’t even think it’s his fault that he stinks. Wow.

Pretty obvious that Russell is just another overweight, overrated, and underpeforming first round busta rhymes. At least he made more $$$ than leaf, shuler, couch and the rest.

JaMarcus Russell will be out of the league in 3 years….he will owe millions to the banks and the IRS for backed taxes and buying things he cant afford

Why do I get the feeling Russell is going to sustain a jaw fracture and go on IR…hmmmmmmmm.

If you read between the lines the message is clear,
Russell has the rest of the season to turn it around big time.
Failing that, he WILL be cut in the off season, thanks to the uncapped year.

  17. schism says: Oct 27, 2009 10:57 AM

When you watch the team, he really seems like the problem, they have a decent defense, but russels poor play and leadership put the defenese on the field for 3/4 of the game, he is the definition of a bust, he needs to be benched so he can get a taste of reality, I think he has the skills to be a productive QB, but really needs to put things into persepctive and realize how lucky he is..

  18. bearsrule says: Oct 27, 2009 10:57 AM

Bottom line is, Russell flat out doesn’t care. He got his $$$$$ and he’s set. In a few years you’ll hear he’s bankrupt and living in an apartment.

  19. Strick says: Oct 27, 2009 11:01 AM

Good for Cable. I feel bad for him. I really do.
What’s he supposed to do? Smile and nod while Al Davis runs the team? All that will get him is a 3-13 record and a head-of-the-line privileges in the unemployment line. He’ll probably get both of those anyway, even if what’s wrong with the Raiders isn’t his fault.
Russell sucks. Always has. Letting go of Garcia was a stupid move with that doddering old fool’s fingerprints all over it.

  20. John Cittebart says: Oct 27, 2009 11:07 AM

I’ve read articles that Kiffin was not interested in drafting Russell. Given that Kiffin was the headcoach at the time, he had a job to do. And he was on the right track by bringing Russell along slowly. Russell looked promising before Kiffin left.
Since then, everything went wrong. Not only with Russell but McFadden wasn’t performing before getting injured. Etc.
And the player that the coaching staff doesn’t care to see succeed is performing the best (i.e., Fargas).
Perhaps, the coaching staff should treat all of their players the way they treat fargas and maybe they’d start winning!

again I would like to know why this site is the only one pointing out that this guy is a total bust.why doesn’t he get the grossman treatment?you know where is not only blamed for everything that is wrong with his team but everything else that is wrong with the world including global warming.and he wasn’t the first pick in the draft who got what 30 million bucks to sign and then suck worse than anyone has sucked before.why do the rest of the media and so called experts ignore or say he needs time to devlop?why isn’t st. dungy pointing out the fact he sucks or reaching out to “mentor” him?

  22. Richm2256 says: Oct 27, 2009 11:17 AM

There is literally no humbleness on the part of Russell. It’s as if he can’t even consider the possibility that he may just suck and needs to work harder.
How far do you think this denial is going to get him with his teamates as he continuously points the finger at THEM?
He’s got VY syndrome, a fatal disease for NFL quarterbacks.

It seems to me that during a real game Jamrcus fogets all of the thing the coaches taught him. And the things he does in practice, such as check downs. Maybe he gets nervous during real games.
I’m not joking or anything, I’m really curious how he would do in the UFL. At this point if the light doesn’t eventually go on for his kid and the raiders cut him, I don’t see another team picking him up so playing in the UFL or CFL might be good for him cause maybe he will calm down and actually go through his progression, and throw balls away instead of taking sacks or throwing INTs.

Russell’s problem is work ethic! Too rich too quick! The kid has tremendous upside, absolute tremendous!
But you can tell he doesn’t have it in’em to take it to the next level. 6’6″ 260 and some change, can throw the hell out of the ball – but he doesn’t have the fire in his belly.
It’s a waste of talent. I hope he realizes it, before he gets too old and its too late.

One more case for a rookie salary cap. The owners want it. Most of the veterans want it. The union doesn’t want it.
I guess enough talented vets haven’t yet been given the heave-ho in favor of a rookie free agent making the league minimum.

  28. sim448 says: Oct 27, 2009 11:45 AM

rangersleadtheway, what is YOUR problem? you related to Russell? 24 is ok, not good, just so you know. Russell sucks, he has no clue on the field and their are 32 backups who are better than him. He is the biggest bust since Ryan Leaf. he makes Tim Couch look like a Pro Bowler. As Cleveland Brown would say, he is “turrible”. If the Raiders had Jeff George, they would be so much better off, and i am typing this with a straight face. Also, has anyone noticed how many busts are coming out of LSU? People talk about USC(which is a load of crap because they have stud players all over the NFL), but these LSU guys cant seem to take it to pros. Russell was 50 pounds overweight in college, scouts didnt pick up on this? I just dont get it. How could a guy this bad get picked so high? When are these “experts” going to start getting it right when it comes to qb’s? It makes me think that the so called experts know just as much as I do.

    ————————————————–
Just hearing or seeing his name makes me cringe in anger. Marc Wilson was garbage and his step-son JaBust Russell is following in dear 0ld dad’s footsteps.
Russell is the reason why the NFL needs to reign in paying overrated rookies millions of unearned dollars for being bums. The fact that JaBust would hold out and perform like this every given Sunday is karma for the RAIDERS. Kiffin told the RAIDERS not to draft him and now Big Al will be paying out millions to a bum who should be out of the league.

  36. 1nationraidernation says: Oct 27, 2009 12:10 PM

now Tom Cable is making execuses…gimme a break, put Peyton behind that o-line and he would suck to.
First play of the game inside your own 10 yard line and let alone call a pass play, but you are going to call a deep ball pass. Are we surprised that he got sacked because the RT got bull rushed and ended up on his you know what.
On the other interception the OLB came in untouched, in a matter of less then two seconds. I think Russell was trying to just reach the line of scrimmage and avoid the sack.
My point is you can draft all of the skill position players you want, and if there is no o-line they will all be a bust. That goes for TRussel, McFadded, and Darrius “bottom” of the Bay.
Plus why does cable have to throw on every first down?
It’s time for Al to call Bruce Allen and make him the GM. He can bring a friend back to coach as well.

That is why there needs to be a rookie pay scale for real! Unproven commodities making millions and the do not deserve it.
The NBA has the best system in place, the NFL should follow suit quickly. Remove the power from the agents. After 4 years, then let’em renegotiate. Fresh out of college what is there to negotiate, come in – prove yourself and then you get a pay raise.
