Ochocinco on pace for huge year

Back in June, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco and yours truly engaged in a moderate Twitter skirmish, with Chad eventually vowing that he will match his 2008 numbers by Week Four or Week Six.

He didn't quite make it, but he came damn close.

Last year, Ochocinco caught 53 passes for 540 yards and four touchdowns.  Through seven games in 2009, Ochocinco has 39 receptions 573 yards and five scores.

It puts him on track for more than 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns.

So, Chad, congrats.  You've turned it around, and the team is in great shape because of it.

    As a Ravens fan, it is hard for me to say this. But Chad Johnson is just so damn entertaining that i almost like him, especially when RayRay almost decapitates him. Ocho is good for the NFL.

    The team is in great shape because we have a good D and a good running game, aside form that, we're in good shape because the Bengals have been able to make plays when they need them the most. Yes Chad is an integral part of the O, but he's a cog in the wheel, not the sole reason.
    Additionally, cue the Chad haters, sniffle sniffle bitches.

    Maybe I'm one of the few, but I'm a big fan of 85. I think he's a very self-aware athlete who backs up his harmless off-the-field antics with serious production (aside from a bad year in 2008).

    "He" turned it around? Really, you wouldn't give any(any?) credit to him maybe having a Pro-Bowl Quarterback behind the center?

  5. sonvar says: October 27, 2009 12:22 PM

    He's also made me a pretty happy fantasy owner. My most consistent WR with the chance for bigger scores.

  6. DRex says: October 27, 2009 12:23 PM

    Florio you retard,

    Ochocinco isn't putting up better numbers because he's playing better, it's because he has Palmer at QB.

  7. zmcdonald says: October 27, 2009 12:24 PM

    It helps when your pro bowl qb is throwing the ball and not a failed lawyer from harvard

  8. leatherneck says: October 27, 2009 12:34 PM

    Ochocinco is a happy warrior. He's a football player first, but he just makes people happy. Except opposing teams.

  9. ochostinko says: October 27, 2009 12:36 PM

    Could the absence of that locker room distraction named T.J. Houshmandzadeh also be helping out...?

  10. thetruth says: October 27, 2009 1:04 PM

    He had 1,166 yards in 2002, He had 90 Rec and 1,355 yards in 2003, When did Joh Kitna make the Pro Bowl? Chad put serious work into the off season. He gets open this year so he gets the damn ball with or without Carson.

  11. crazamonka says: October 27, 2009 1:10 PM

    Chad's doing better because:

    1. Carson's back
    2. He worked his butt of this off-season
    3. They got a running game like they did back when Rudi was at his best

    @cmspirate

    You ever see the play where Chad tried to block Ray at the goal line and just bounced off his chest? It's hilarious. Look it up on YouTube.

    It's good to see Chad with that fire again. Last year was a mess. I admit that I was calling for Marvin Lewis's head but after seeing Hard Knocks I know why the Bengals are playing better: the coaching staff has made it a better team.

    Gotta admit Chad looks like a first tier WR again. Along with a motivated Cedric Benson, a sober Chris Henry, and a (finally!!!) healthy Carson Palmer, they've turned into one of my favorite teams to watch this season.

  14. Laxer37 says: October 27, 2009 1:16 PM

    Two words explain his turn around:

    Contract Year

    And just think how good he could be if he concentrated on footbal instead of being such a clown.

    Maybe his next team can keep him under control.

  15. bearsrule says: October 27, 2009 1:24 PM

    All I know is he talked all week about what he was going to do, then he went out and did it. My hat's off to him.

  16. Twiz says: October 27, 2009 2:00 PM

    Lord Florio, you said during your lil chat on Sunday night that the Vikings receivers were better because of who they have as QB. Did you forget that? Doesn't the same thing apply to the Bengals?

    I don't agree with much of what ol 85 does during his off time, but gotta give the man credit. He is getting it done on the field and that is where it counts!

    Him bouncing of Ray makes me feel all emotional inside i love it

    I've seen that clip. It's pretty funny.

    I agree with what other's have said. A renewed work ethic, a healthy Palmer, and a "run first to open up the pass" game plan have all contributed to 85's revival.

  19. schism says: October 27, 2009 2:42 PM

    Chad is good for the NFL. He is funny off the field, and its all in good fun. His play this year has been great, it helps to have the double threat of a run game too.
    I'm loving the AFC north right now, 3 competitive teams that could all take first place or get the wild card.

  20. DocBG says: October 27, 2009 2:45 PM

    The guy is an entertainer. He enjoys making people happy and he's a damn good reciever.

    I don't think anyone thought before this year that it might have been dooshmenzadeh that was actually holding the team back, dare i say the bengals knew what they where doing when they let him walk?

    coles has also kept teams from putting too much attention on ocho and palmer being back has helped to. The bengals are a fun team to watch play. best of luck.

  21. texasPHINSfan says: October 27, 2009 3:40 PM

    i think the running game was the biggest addition of help. now the defenses are focusing more on stopping the run, freeing up the secondary for bengals WR's.

    having palmer back there doesn't hurt either.

    all that said, he has talent and he's definitely entertaining.

    Now your learning. That was very smart of you Mr Florio. With a Man like Chad who loves to talk about anything in his life that he does good its smart to tell him he's right. Because you know hes gonna be telling people " I Told Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com that I would match my numbers by week 4, and look what Im doing Im destroying what I did last year, so Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com had to show respect and give me my props, Go check it out im telling you my twitter, myspace, ustream, and blog followers here's the address http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/10/27/ochocinco-on-pace-for-huge-year/#comments"

    @Laxer37:

    Check your facts. Chad's contract runs through 2011.

  27. Stone says: October 28, 2009 1:31 AM

    Or, Palmer is healthy and Chad has someone to throw to him now.

  28. Laxer37 says: October 28, 2009 11:44 AM

    Hey JollyOldMan:

    What I was refering to is the Bengals telling Chad they would re-work his contract after THIS SEASON as long as he quit demanding a trade and acting like an a-hole.

    So in essence, he is playing for a new contract.

    Here I did your homework for you:

    @ Laxer37-

    Thanks for keeping these ochocinco, jizz loving, bengirls fans real. Bottom line is this:

    Chad is about Chad and nobody else. With the incentive for restructuring and more $$$, hell yes he's going to be in camp and behave to the best of his jack ass ability on and off the field.

    TJ was the best receiver on the Bengals team before going to Seattle. He was the only WR for the Bengirls that didn't lie down every time he caught the ball, he actually did his best to gain YAC, unlike Ocho and Henry. Both are thugs, both are twigs and neither ever wants to take a hit for fear of being knocked into tomorrow. Criminals know how to run fast and evade hits or "shots"... need I say more.

    Agree that Palmer, running game, O-line all contribute to better year for entire WR crew for Bengals.

    Let's see Chad try to run someone over one of these days, that will be even more hilarious than bouncing off Ray Ray's chest. Hope we see that again in 2 weeks, except this time, it would be nice if Chad is a little dizzier when he gets up.

    If any of you bengals fans tweet with Chad, tell him he's gonna get what's been coming to him for a long time in the next few games. He'll be knocked so hard the jizz will come out of him.

  30. JollyOldMan says: October 28, 2009 2:48 PM

    @Laxer37:

    The term used in your "homework" source was review, not re-work. There is a difference in meaning between the two. F

    @bengalstink09:

    Your severe overuse of the word "jizz" is disturbing. You might want to keep those latent homosexual tendencies under control.

    Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course...
