The man accused of pumping a baker’s dozen plus one bullets into former Jaguars offensive lineman Richard Collier finally is facing a judge and a jury, nearly 14 months after the incident occurred.
According to Paul Pinkham of the Florida Times-Union, the case went to trial today, and it will hinge on a secretly-made tape of an alleged confession by Tyrone Romaro Hartsfield.
Stephan Wilson, a friend of Hartsfield’s who is on federal probation for brandishing a weapon during an armed robbery, agreed to wear a wire after being threatened with arrest.
The contents of the tape have remained largely secret, due to a Florida law that permits prosecutors to conceal from pre-trial discovery evidence relating to confessions.
Hartsfield has proclaimed his innocence, which means that he’ll have something in common with the other prisoners, if/when Hartsfield is convicted.
Collier is permanently paralyzed from the waist down, and one of his legs was removed.
Given the sheer number of bullets fired, it’s amazing that he survived.
Now, he’ll get a chance to see justice meted out to the person responsible for Collier’s current condition.
If, of course, guilt can be established beyond a reasonable doubt.
the people who mock jags fans with LA Jags will be the first in line to say the LA Jags get to much play on espn.
angrypirate way to stick to the story.. oh wait..
So, Florio, how many fortnights are there in 14 months?
I’m one of those backward individuals who believes we should bring back old fashioned justice with public hangings, the guillotine and public humiliation via the public stocks. There is an element in society today that hold no value upon human life. I see them deserving of no mercy in return.
The individual who shot Collier is just such a person. He’s a certified lower than a cockroach scum of the earth and needs to be removed from being a menace to society in a very public and brutal fashion so as to demonstrate to all his of ilk that his “way” is the wrong way and will not be tolerated.
Crime would drop precipitously. I know the lawyers would like it…..but that just makes me certain it would work.
I meant to say:
I know the lawyers would NOT like it…..but that just makes me certain it would work.
“Hartsfield has proclaimed his innocence, which means that he’ll have something in common with the other prisoners, if/when Hartsfield is convicted.”
Ha, good one!
I’m not laughing at Collier’s situation, though, that’s messed up and he better get justice.
Are you an attorney? “If, of course, guilty can be established beyond a reasonable doubt.”
How about guilt? Florio, you’re not good or as you would put it “your not good”.
Assuming Hartsfield gets a fair trial and is convicted, I hope he gets life without any parole at one of Florida’s less comfortable prison institutions.
I hope big Rich has a good life and I’m confident Wayne Weaver and the team will keep him part of the Jaguars family as long as he wants to be part of it.
