Richard Seymour: Raiders couldn't beat a high school team

Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour is prone to mood swings. One week he thinks his team has playoff potential, and the next . . . well, the next Seymour thinks his team is just a wee bit short of playoff caliber.

After insisting last week that the Raiders will make the playoffs this year, Seymour dramatically toned down his rhetoric following a 38-0 defeat to the Jets.

"I don't think we could've beat an Oakland high school team," USA Today quotes Seymour saying after the loss to the Jets.

Seymour noted that "Playing from behind isn't our strong suit," which leaves open the question of what is the Raiders' strong suit. Whatever it is, the Raiders didn't show it off on Sunday, when Seymour's statement that they couldn't beat a high school team didn't look like that big of an exaggeration.

This guy has the balls to talk about what Pierce said about the Raiders and now he says this?? What a tool.

  4. jersey73 says: October 27, 2009 4:27 PM

Playoffs one week, can't beat a high school next week.

Having flashbacks to Spicoli in the car wreck scene of Fast Times At Ridgemont High"

  5. Citizen Strange says: October 27, 2009 4:27 PM

So is this Seymour's way of distancing himself from his previous prediction of the Raider's making the playoffs?

  6. cgmac says: October 27, 2009 4:29 PM

I bet he's not looking so fondly on the trade now is he?

"insisting"??? I guess you didn't listen to the interview, nice reporting!!

  8. JohnnyH says: October 27, 2009 4:33 PM

Well they beat the Eagles who beat Washington.

  9. wmt says: October 27, 2009 4:33 PM

that quote has been plastered all over the place, it's old news. Nice reporting. Are you not embarrassed to be the last resource to report on this? good job.

ha, Seymour, you're an idiot. Take some lithium and cool out. Every time you open your mouth you look dumber than the last time.

  11. Vikes-N-Favre says: October 27, 2009 4:39 PM

How can he not have those emotions? He went from one of the greatest franchises in NFL history to the damn Raiders. I feel for guys like Seymour and Vrabel going from the Pats to the Raiders and Chiefs.

  12. masterblaster78 says: October 27, 2009 4:40 PM

Richard needs to make up his mind. Finally the players on the team are speaking up about how they play. To bad Seymour didn't go further and mention names. Maybe a little embarassment would do some good. Seems the boo's from the stands surely don't. Russell seems to think he's not doing such a bad job. Jeff George is still on the market........just a hint.

  13. schism says: October 27, 2009 4:43 PM

he was just rying to ligh ta fire, its not the d's fault, when th eoffense can't stay on the field for longer than 60 seconds, they can get pretty tired.

Get Jamarcus out of the NFL , dude is holding the entire leauge back,. He only gets plays off when he catches the other teams off guard, playing down to his level.

  14. Lawdog2011 says: October 27, 2009 4:45 PM

They've been pretty good (defensively) when playing with a lead, albeit it's only happened against the Chargers, Chiefs, and Eagles. When you have the defense on the field 60% of the game because of JaBustus constantly turning the ball over, and a crap third down percentage leading to three-and-outs no team can win with that recipe.

Only hope for Oakland is to unload the bust, he's not a franchise player and it was a huge mistake to take him (and DHB for that matter) on day one of the draft. There's 100 million of contract obligations for two bums, imagine if we'd taken Megatron instead of Jabustus, and then Raji instead of DHB - may even have a first round pick for 2011 left to use?

What does that make the Eagles??

  17. wolfpackraider says: October 27, 2009 4:51 PM

You guys are killing me. I saw the transcript, he was asked yes or no, will the Raiders make the playoffs? That was it, he was asked to answer yes or no to that question.

You tell me what kind of player just says "no, we suck"

Of course the man doesn't think we'll make the playoffs, but you taking a response to a point blank question and spinning it to say that Seymour was boasting about playoffs is ridiculous.

I wish I wasn't a Raiders fan because they are the most pathetic excuse for a professional sports franchise in history, but there's enough legitimate reasons to rip them to not put words in a guys mouth who never wanted to be there anyway.

  18. Igottz5onit says: October 27, 2009 4:57 PM

Yeah but they could probably still beat the Skins. Not that we will know about it since Dan Snyder will probably censor all news of the Redskins by week 14.

  19. chugs says: October 27, 2009 5:00 PM

    ...& you. Florio, said??

    "The sky is the limit..."

..& then I was reminded you picked the Redskins
    for the Super Bowl???

...& people come here, why exactly???

    For your expertise??

  20. DJSlyBri says: October 27, 2009 5:04 PM

What a difference a weeks makes. From "Playoffs" to "You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game."

Har har har. I guess your team never laid an egg before and gave an inferior team the W.

Don't let that stop you from your blockbuster jokes. You ought to write for the movies.

Where has Raiturd Nation gone!?! Attendance for their game on Sunday was announced at 39,354. I guess Raiturd Nation is nothing but a myth...much like the orgainzition's claim of a "Commitment to Excellence." The Raiturds are a joke.

  24. Joe in Toronto, Canada says: October 27, 2009 5:12 PM

That's the way it is here, wolfpackraider.

Florio edits and manipulates what people say, and the sheep come running.

On top of that, and this is the best part, the sheep then ignore the truth and keep going, lol.

  25. pacstud says: October 27, 2009 5:13 PM

    To be fair...

    He didn't say

"We couldn't beat a HS team."

    he said:

    "I don't think we could've beat an....HS team."

I believe that means he was referring to that particular performance (the Jets).

"Couldn't" implies that the "beat a HS team" bar is in place indefinitely. It's also shoddy and yellow journalism.

  26. iusedtobeteddybayer says: October 27, 2009 5:14 PM

They come here, chugs, because they feel sorry for Napoleon Florio. Any man under 5 feet tall is a sad, sad thing.

  27. MikeW says: October 27, 2009 5:20 PM

give Seymour a break about sounding dumber and dumber. It's obvious he's just taken up drinking as a new hobby.

wouldn't you, if you were traded from a contender to the Raiders?

as for getting Russell out of the NFL? I'm sure you can use him on the defensive line, lets not be quick to kick him out yet

  28. dakotah says: October 27, 2009 5:45 PM

iusedtobeteddybayer - Florio's under 5 feet tall and bald. I honestly feel sorry for the guy.

I s'pose that "playing behind" stuff is the strong suit of them folks on the other side of the Bay.

The 39,354 was the lowest since the 60"s.

    Humm, "Raiturds are a joke"

    Yep, sure is....much like "Sourdough"

    ------------

They're gearing up for another playoff run. Your team's gonna be sitting at home desperately trying to remember the one SB appearance they're gonna have all decade.

  35. Backinthesaddle says: October 27, 2009 7:05 PM

Seymour has got to be just enormously frustrated. He has played his entire career for the winningest team of this decade. A team with a tremendous organization and players of character that get it done.

Now he's stuck on a team that is the polar opposite. He's got be dying.

  36. comment_submission_error says: October 27, 2009 7:40 PM

Richard just hasn't acclimated himself to his new, bipolar existence. It takes awhile to adjust.

Players of character? Some of them, sure.

  37. TheBigOldDog says: October 27, 2009 8:24 PM

Richard Seymour is an object lesson for all those players who think they can have their cake and eat it too.

How's the cake in Oakland working out for you Richard?

I hope the couple of extra bucks you may (or not now) make next year were worth what you are now going through.

  38. TheBigOldDog says: October 27, 2009 8:32 PM

    wolfpackraider,

Just because somebody some ass in them media asks a question doesn't mean you have to answer it. You dance. "Well, I sure hope we do. I know I am going to do everything I can every week to win." See how easy it is? Even Seymour should be able to do it.

Kitty138 has a point. Both teams know what it's like to make a SB appearance. It's like they say in Hollywood: "It's an honor just to be nominated. Wanna see my 2nd place trophies?"

  40. GoBears84 says: October 27, 2009 10:23 PM

chugs, why are you even here then? like bitching about some free food, its free sucker, don't complain....thats why they play the games, to see who the best is...

Maybe we should do what Chugs wants and we'll just pick teams for the superbowl, no need to have games and playoffs for 20 weeks....no way, obviously the most talented of teams (on paper) execute and perform up to par.... (redskins) (philly) (cowboys last few years)

  41. Fubar the Great says: October 27, 2009 11:14 PM

If I got traded to the Raiders, first home game I'd shoot myself in the head when they called my name during team introduction. If I could wait that long.
