Zorn: Cooley has broken ankle

The nightmare season for Washington's offense just got a lot worse.  X-rays on tight end Chris Cooley's ankle during Monday night's loss revealed a break.

"He's got a break in his ankle," coach Jim Zorn said after the game. "It's on the inner side of his tibia.  I haven't seen the X-rays yet, but we're quite certain it's broke or fractured in some way.  He'll be out for a while.  I don't know that it's a season-ending injury yet. I can't say that."

Rick Maese of the Washington Post tweeted that Cooley is likely to miss the season, but that's not confirmed yet.

Second-year pro Fred Davis will likely take Cooley's spot on the field. Davis struggles to block, but caught eight passes for 78 yards and a score Monday, albeit mostly in garbage time.

    Gregg,

Fred Davis had 8 receptions, not seven.

    Sucks about Cooley though.

maybe it was that gay bleached hair he had. Our season was over long before this. This is just the nail in the coffin.

Too bad, hope he heals well. Cooley is a baller...

Ugh, sorry to hear, Skins fans.

Cooley is one of my favorite rival players, and probably the best tight end in the division. If he had the supporting cast Witten, Boss or Celek had, his numbers would pop.

    Condolences from an Eagles fan.

I am certainly not a Skins fan, but was it painful for anyone else watching Zorn trying to look busy last night on the sidelines?
Man, the whole football world watching you on Monday Night while you mentally knit a cute little sweater for Dan Snyder's Yorkie.
    Let it end.

Nice hair Cooley. What are you in High School? Grow up!

I'm pretty sure Cooley might be the HAPPIEST person in DC this morning.

With Cooley out that makes Shockey the gayest tight end in the NFL. Sad to see the competition end so abruptly. Especially after Cooley when the extra mile with that hairdoo.

I actually felt bad for Zorn. The playcalling was not and is not the problem.

Well stated, I wish they would just fire him and get it over with. He doesn't seem at all interested

Perhaps pursuing a career as a doctor is Zorn's best bet a this point anyway.

who cares anyways...as a skins fan, i can't watch them anymore....last night i ate a plate of nachos and buffalo chicken dip. Then i went and took a big smelly shit....and it smelled like the Washington Redskins

This is a big blow to Skins fans/Skins organization. It's certainly not something anyone, even your rivals want to see.

I do take an issue with your assessment of him though. As a Dallas fan living in DC, even most of the skins fans around here think Witten is the better TE in the division. Still, the differences between them are not huge, sort of position 1, and position 1a if you will.

The actual difference between Cooley and Witten is that Witten has a slightly more competent QB throwing the ball.

Riiiight, this explains Cooley's 8 fumbles, despite playing in almost 20 games less than Witten (Witten has only 3). Or that Witten has more YAC than Cooley. Both of these are stats clearly indicate that Witten just has had better QB's (/sarcasm).

Plus, since so many redskins fans are so hellbent on telling us Dallas fans that we haven't won a playoff game in 700 years, and Washington has, the Skins can't possibly have a slightly more competent Qb.

Lastly, I'm not sure I'd call Vinny and Bledsoe all that competent, especially since they were Witten's QB for the first three years.

Almost everyone in the NFL recognizes that Witten is the most complete TE in the league right now: Madden, Schefter, Collinsworth, Gruden, all have commented on something saying as much. The only people that seem to think Cooley is the better of the two are Redskins fans.

Zorn needs to do something to force Synder to fire him. It has to be something that will not hurt Zorn's reputation though.

I think the difference between Cooley and Witten is negligible. I think Witten is one hell of a player, too, maybe the only Cowboy I actually don't hate with the passion of a thousand suns.

I just wonder what the difference would be if Cooley had Romo throwing to him. J. Campbell is no Tony Romo, playoff win or not. It's just a different class of player. Worse QB + worse O-Line is gonna = Worse TE.
