Meriweather merits AFC defensive POW award

For his performance against the Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium, Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather has won the AFC's defensive player of the week award.

Meriweather intercepted two passes in the games first six minutes, which put him on pace for 20 in the game.  (He really slacked off the rest of the way.)

One was returned for a touchdown, the first points in the 35-7 rout.

It's the second straight year that the league's London game has generated a player of the week prize.  In 2008, Saints quarterback Drew Brees was named NFC offensive player of the week after New Orleans defeated San Diego in a 37-32 shootout.

it should've been Jairus Byrd. 2 picks for second straight week!

  2. Steeler4life says: October 28, 2009 10:02 AM

I think JaMarcus Russell should have received this over Meriweather. He single-handedly shut down the Raiders offense.

Besides the Cheatriots were only playing the Bucs. They didn't even have to film their practices.

    Bad Choice

The cheater jokes are sooo funny. I guess no one can get enough of them. Especially Steeler fans.
Give the kid some credit, he has really stepped up and become a solid safety. He deserved POW.

  4. Marv_Sleezy says: October 28, 2009 10:30 AM

Jairus Byrd had a much better performance. And he did it against a marginally better team.

Only reason marrywether gets it is to bring attention to the London game

  5. bobinpuertorico says: October 28, 2009 10:37 AM

Rookie Jairus Byrd's development was delayed, due to the final exam schedule at Oregon and he started the year as a backup. Now in his last three games he has five interceptions and deserves to be the leading FS in the AFC for the Pro Bowl!

Merriweather has been coming on strong for weeks. About time he got this recognition.

  7. 8man says: October 28, 2009 10:55 AM

Yes. Meriweather only got it because he played for the Patriots in the London game. Clearly a tone setting interception that resulted in a touchdown on the road, giving his team the lead, was absolutely meaningless.

Kraft is the most respected and powerful owner in the NFL and our Patriots are it's darlings.

Too bad for you if you root for anyone else.

The other AFC Meriweather is a 'roid freak, so good choice.

    Steeler4life,

You're a sad little man. It's over, Bubba. Nothing will ever diminish the ass-whippings that your over-hyped team got at the hands of the Patriots. Stay tuned, more ass-whippings are coming your way.

meriweather has become a strong presence in the pats secondary. his training at corner and safety during his first few years in the league have made him a ball hawking db that the pats have been missing since dirty rodney stepped onto the foxboro scene. kid could be a pro bowler if he continues to develop and stays healthy.

  12. Krow says: October 28, 2009 11:26 AM

Not sure anyone should get a POW award in games against these bottom-feeder teams.

How can the Superbowl Champs be over-hyped? The Steelers have won 2 of the last four. The Patriots have won zero since spygate was discovered.

    I am waiting.

People love to throw the patriots under the bus, forgetting that AFTER the tapes were turned in is when they ABSOLUTELY CRUSH THE REST OF THE LEAGUE....Tom threw 50 TD's....

the next closest guy had 32, the point is... MY PATS are back and you guys can Whine all you want

Can you say SUPERBOWL!!!!! ha ha

How does one merit the defense POW, playing against a virtual rookie quarterback on a 0-7 team? Pretty low standards for POW, I think.

Now kindly explain to those of us on this website how the Patriots stole the Super Bowls, as I recall they got penalize for video taping a bunch of nothing if you saw the tapes. And again the Superbowl had nothing to do with the tapes so that's already 1 hole in you theory don't hate a team for being good.

please if you can't be interesting or funny with your posts, don't post anything

    @Steeler4life:
    Your wait is over.

Number of Superbowls won by the Steelers after defeating the Patriots in the playoffs: 0

Number of Superbowls won by the Patriots after defeating the Steelers in the playoffs: 2

Number of times the Patriots beat the Steelers in the playoffs: 3

Number of times the Steelers beat the Patriots in the playoffs: 0

Number of times the Patriots beat the Steelers in the playoffs IN PITTSBURGH: 2

Number of Superbowls won by the Steelers without the aid of steroids or corrupt officiating: 0

To summarize- the Patriots OWN the Steelers in the playoffs and the Steelers only win by cheating.

Also, "Spygate" was a term fabricated by the media to address a situation where in fact no actual spying occurred. Therefore it was not "discovered", such as when you "discovered" that all you needed was an 8th grade education to be the manager at the local Wendy's restaurant.
    Hold the cheese, beotch.

All the stats you racked up were from the Spygate era. You can't honestly believe that the tapes that had the evidence were not destroyed.

Screw you, Chowder Head. Go "Pak Ya Caw" up Belichicks arse.

  21. deepthreat says: October 28, 2009 1:31 PM

Insecure Steeler fans still whining about taping signals that are right out in the open for all to see. If you are such a purist, how about those Steeler teams in the 1970's that were so juiced up that half of them are dead now ? If the signals were so valuable, teams would tape the signals rather than the game with their cameras in the box. Belichick was just covering all his bases and Goodell overreacted. The Patriots lost a 1st round pick over that, so I think they paid a hefty price.

  22. I♥Patriots says: October 28, 2009 1:45 PM

People need to understand the rule before they go and talk about the made-up thing AKA "spygate."

Taping of defensive signals is permitted from certain areas of the stadium. We taped from an illegal area, we did not make illegal tapes.

  23. Frank says: October 28, 2009 2:06 PM

    Steeler4life,

Very quick and intelligent response to tj-52's post.

And you wonder why anybody with a brain thinks you mullet-heads are a bunch of redneck loud-mouths. Like we from Boston all know, your team just rolls over and takes it up the tailpipe when it comes to playing the Patriots. The "cheating" BS you spew is because you've got no defense against the documented ass-whippings.

You're like a little girl.... wave your towels asshole, you got nothing.

  24. Richm2256 says: October 28, 2009 2:35 PM

Tapes are relevant for only so long in the NFL, people. Without "tapes" of other opponents signs after week one of the 2007 season, New England went on to win seventeen straight games ....... 17, think about that. And without ny "illegal tapes" in 2008 and with a backup Quarterback, they went 11-5 ....... without any "tapes".

You losers who still spout off about "Spygate" have no real answer for that, you just continue to spout "Cheatriots" BS without having a single answer for the fact that New England won 28 of 34 games with no illegal tapes and 16 weeks of a back-up QB ..........

When presented with fact you rebut with outlandish conjecture and unsubstantiated hearsay.

You are what we refer to in the legal field as a "totallus jackassius".

Just kiddin. I'm not in the legal field, I just think you're a total jackass. Yeah, now you get it. You were going to look it up too, weren't you.
There has to be something in the water down there.

I was talking football with a Cardinals fan the other day and they (of course) had to bring up the whole "Cheatriots" thing -and how mad it made them that the Patriots were such cheaters.

So I explained some things to them.

    1) Taping defensive signals is legal. All teams do it.-but (I believe) you have to do it from the sidelines or the coaches booth
    2) The Patriots "cheated" by taping from the stands -basically from a different angle.
    3) The League reviewed the tapes and stated that that Patriots gained no discernable advantage by having them.

The Cardinal fan had an "oh really? Thats not so bad moment" and I had a "wow, you can actually get through to some people" moment.

Not expecting another one here... but there you go. Hate all you want, but the Patriots "cheating" amounted basically to a different angle on the same thing that the whole rest of the league is doing themselves.
