Drew Brees chimes in on undefeated talk

Saints running back Reggie Bush recently said that he thinks that his team can go undefeated.

“Can we go undefeated?” Bush told Sporting News Radio’s The Monty Show.  “Yes.  I do think we have the
players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching
staff, we have the players.”

On Thursday, Saints quarterback Drew Brees was asked about Bush’s comments.

And then Brees, blending Bush’s words together with similar comments from running back Pierre Thomas, suggested that Bush said something he didn’t say.

“I think what they both said was we have the discipline to
take it one game at a time, feeling like we can win each game one at a time,
and if you do that enough times, maybe you go undefeated,” Brees said in comments distributed by the team.

But that’s not what Bush said.  It’s what Bush should have said, and it’s what Bush surely will say if he’s ever asked that question again — even if the Saints aren’t still undefeated when the question is asked.

I’d love to see the Saints go undefeated and win it all. It’d be the feel good story of the year considering all the other crap the fans have had to deal with..GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!

sloooowww news day, pretty boring stuff who cares who said what and what they said. Please find something better to write about. How about you post a paragraph from gaurterback of the future, for our bedtime story.

Hey Florio, it’s sad that this is all you have to write about. Get a real job.

  4. mwcarolina says: Oct 29, 2009 11:59 PM

Can it happen, yes, will it happen, don’t think so, it is too hard to win them all, the patroits almost did it, but they lost the super bowl, i do agree that this team has the best chemistry, Brees is that good, Nick Saban is a big moron for passing up on him for Culpepper.

What’s so wrong with thinking your team CAN go undefeated? He didn’t say they WILL go undefeated. He didn’t make any guarantees. All he said is that they are good enough to be capable of it.
    Did nothing wrong.

  6. VonClausewitz says: Oct 30, 2009 12:19 AM

Mountain out of a molehill. All good players aim for going undefeated. That’s why they’re good players. Anyway it’s irrelevant. You won’t need to use silly tactics like this to manufacture drama. In a couple of weeks it won’t be the players who will be driving this undefeated question, it will be the pundits.
And yes they are good enough to go undefeated. But there’s also a handful of teams who are capable of stopping them. We got a taste of it in the Miami game. Those teams with superior coaching and management will be targeting the Saints as much as anyone. There’s no better recipe for motivating your team for post season success than knocking off the perceived best. However you cut it New Orleans is going to have to earn their way silly drama aside.

Hmmm…you think after watching the Pats get beat durning their 18-1 (ha ha ha can’t help it) run, the Saints would opt for playing it safe a keep their mouths shut about going 19-0.
They better lose that one game before the playoffs so they know what it feels like to lose. Who knows, it could be this week after all this talk.
I love it, the 18-1 Pats are the WORST 18-1 team of all time.

  8. stetai says: Oct 30, 2009 12:33 AM

I just find it funny that Reggie Bush is talking so big, when he’s like the 3rd or 4th best RB on the team. Or maybe that’s why he’s talking big because he knows their wins and losses have nothing to do with him and he knows he’s not that valuable a NFL player.

  9. nolasaint25 says: Oct 30, 2009 12:41 AM

Shouldn’t every player on every team believe their gonna go undefeated?? Or should they say no we’re gonna lose a few.

  10. SF Saints Fan says: Oct 30, 2009 12:47 AM

Can the Saints go undefeated? Yes. Will the Saints go undefeated, probably not.
What I would love to see is some real NFL history made this year. This looks like one of the most lopsided seasons in recent NFL history. The good teams are really good and the bad teams are really bad. How about the Saints and the Colts BOTH go undefeated and Tampa Bay and the Rams BOTH go 0-16. That would be great. Two 16-0 teams and two 0-16 teams in the same year. Then the Saints and Colts can meet in the Super Bowl both at 18-0 and somebody has to win the game. (Hey, McNabb – no ties in the Super Bowl, and no upchucking either.)

Trust me on this one. The Saints know what it feels like to lose. Forget about their 40+ year history, just look at the last two years…a good team missing the playoffs for various reasons. They know what it feels like to lose and don’t want to feel it again this year. They probably will, but hopefully not too much and not at all after the playoffs.

  12. stadanko says: Oct 30, 2009 12:59 AM

Jesus, Florio. Sell the site to NBC 100% and get a job with ESPN if you’re going to manufacture a story like this. I almost wish my Saints were under the radar again if all the media is going to do is come up with garbage.

  13. benjua says: Oct 30, 2009 1:06 AM

For christ’s sake, why is what bush said even news? someone came to him and asked him about an undefeated season, it’s not like he went out spouting it on twitter or wherever else. not only that, but he didn’t say he’d carry them to it, he sounded pretty much like a top-notch team player. and what exactly is he supposed so say to that question? “no, there’s no way we’re good enough?” i’d have a much bigger problem if he felt they couldn’t do it.

  14. Tommy_Blah05 says: Oct 30, 2009 1:38 AM

“Can we go undefeated? Yes. I do think we have the players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching staff, we have the players.”
Exactly what is wrong with that statement? If your team is winning games (which the Saints have been VERY good at doing), what is wrong with this statement? I could be one person, but I wish ALL of my team’s players thought this way if in the same situation.
Either way, it doesn’t sound like he guaranteed to go undefeated. Sounds like he was asked if the could go undefeated.

  15. LighTsouT says: Oct 30, 2009 2:02 AM

He was asked: COULD you go undefeated.
    he said: “YES WE CAN”
what the hell is the problem here? he said its possible, he never said they’ll do it. people need to stop making a big deal and READ and LISTEN to what he actually said. READ THE WORDS THAT CAME OUT OF HIS MOUTH, THEY “CAN” GO UNDEFEATED. HE NEVER SAID THEY WILL.

  16. AutumnWind999 says: Oct 30, 2009 2:17 AM

Really what’s the big f-ing deal. What’s Bush supposed to say “no, we’re definitely going to lose some games.” WTF? Shouldn’t every player think they “can” win every game in front of them.
Bush wasn’t guaranteeing anything. He’s saying the Saints have the potential to do it. He was taking it as an opportunity to praise his teammates and coaches. And you know what, he’s right. I doubt they will do it. They’re not as dominant as the 2007 Patriots and it’s a long season. But there’s no team in the NFL that would be favored over the Saints right now the rest of the way.

  17. Occam says: Oct 30, 2009 2:55 AM

“….and it’s what Bush surely will say if he’s ever asked that question again — even if the Saints aren’t still undefeated when the question is asked.”
And why would anyone be asking, or would anyone be saying that the Saints can still go undefeated if they’ve lost? Someone should send this quote to the ‘fail blog.’

  18. kurtismantronik says: Oct 30, 2009 3:09 AM

Who cares what this guy says anymore? Before last season, Reggie Bush said he wanted to be MVP. The year before that he talked about his off-season ballet-karate-tumbling exercise crap and how strong it was gonna make him for the upcoming season. He’s the last guy who still believes the Reggie Bush hype but the truth is Reggie Bush’s NFL career got it’s milkshake drank up by Sheldon Brown in the 2007 playoffs.

  19. piemaster says: Oct 30, 2009 5:06 AM

What a nothing story. Bush says the Saints ‘can’ go undefeated (which they can seeing as they are undefeated and hardly have any unwinable games on their remaining schedule). Brees says basically the same thing just with more of an emphasis on ‘taking one game at a time’.
    Saints – 2
    Media – 0

  20. Chris Fiorentino says: Oct 30, 2009 7:41 AM

I could see if Bush said something like “Do I think we have a chance to go undefeated? No man…I KNOW we ARE going undefeated!!! We ain’t gonna lose no games man. We are the best team in football, and we will kick every team’s ass we play against between now and the end of the Super Bowl.”
That would be a stupid statement and deserving of several posts on here.
What Bush said, “Can we go undefeated? Yes. I do think we have the players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching staff, we have the players.” is both harmless and shows no bravado or cockiness whatsoever.
Florio, sometimes you treat athletes like they are on trial and have to watch every little thing they say for fear of poisoning the jury, which would be us football fans. We are not stupid man…we can read what Bush said and didn’t take it as being cocky. We took his words at face value…they CAN go undefeated…he didn’t say they WILL go undefeated.

  21. Guy Incognito says: Oct 30, 2009 9:38 AM

Ok, I’m a Panther fan and normally if the Saints had screwed something up I’d enjoy the story line. But…
What do you mean it’s what Bush should have said? He’s not a flipping politician. It’s not like the Saints have done anything to disprove the notion that they could go undefeated this season.
Seriously, this isn’t the off-season, there must be a better headline.

  22. sofakingdope says: Oct 30, 2009 9:47 AM

Well next time I’m sure Bush with make sure is says nothing but bad things about the team and be a downer. Just to satisfy the people that comment here.
Cause you know he’s at home waiting, and reading everything you guys have to say. Hanging on every word.

Atleast he’s been there to upchuck, what have you guys won 2 playoff games in 20 years?
Now you go 7-0 and all of a sudden are king dingaling?
    Whats that about?
The saints, can’t and won’t go undefeated this season, won’t be in the superbowl either.
With our backup making his first start, and no westbrook the Eagles gave the saints a tough game. Don’t let the score fool you, it was alot closer than that.
Here come all of the, score was right, you loss we win comments, but for any saints fan who watched the game you know you were sweating bullets through most of it.

  24. Boudin says: Oct 30, 2009 10:49 AM

oh yea, i was totally sweating it. especially when we went up 31-13 at the beginning of the 3rd. back to back touchdowns in a little over a minute each. man, that was close!
    typical Eagles fan…
Saints averaging 48 points against the NFC Yeast.

Hey buttmunch, they are one of only 3 teams to ever do it (Bears and 49′s being the other two). You are just jealous that your crappy team never has, nor probably ever will get that distinction.

I admit it, we have sucked for decades. But we don’t claim to be the greatest team in the history of the world like the Eagles do just about every year. It must really suck to be in the same division with three teams that have won 11 Super Bowls between them: Dallas (5) Redskins (3) Giants (3), and to have a QB who looses his lunch at crunch time, doesn’t know you only get 3 timeouts per half and has no idea that a regular season game can end in a tie. He is a good QB, but that 14 Wonderlic score does rear it’s ugly head every once in a while.
And one of our playoff wins was against the Eagles. Thanks.

Honestly this has gone to far. Media types are way to sensitive to this type of comment. What is the big deal. He said he thinks his team can go undefeated. Ok whats wrong with that. He’s confident in his team and answered truthfully. Im so sick of hearing this crap on tv and reading it on the internet. The guy did nothing wrong. But the idiots in the media want to make it into some big controversy. When did this country get so sensitive that now its wrong to have confidence in your self and express it truthfully when asked the question. I mean why ask the questions if you dont want the answer, and dont complain about the answer once you hear. Especially when the guy isn’t even saying anything bad about anyone or anything remotely innapproitate. And Im not saying this to defend Bush I dont really like him as a player. Im talking in general. If a guys is asked questions and responds by saying I think were going to win this week, or I think we have the best roster on paper, or I think Im gonna have a certain amount of catches this year, or I think our team can go undefeated theres nothing wrong with that. And you guys need to stop trying to make it a problem because knone of your audience gives a dam* when players say harmless things like this. If Bush is asked to explain his self or rephrase his answer I hope he says the same thing b/c its what he believes is the truth and thats what I want to hear the TRUTH not a watered down BS PC answer.
Now Im not singling you out on this one Florio your just a sheep like the rest of the world media in this case.
