Wednesday’s House Judiciary Committee frolic and detour regarding the fitness of rich folk to buy chunks of NFL teams has given us the opportunity to “sprain” a little news. (Nod to the guys at the Dan Patrick Show.)
Contrary to all prior reports on the topic, “Fergie” of the Black Eyed Peas is not a partial owner of the Miami Dolphins. Yet.
(And the crowd collectively gasps.)
The confusion arises from the news that Fergie was approved by a sufficient number of owners earlier this month to become a limited partner in the Dolphins organization. Harvey Greene, the Senior Vice President — Media Relations of the Miami Dolphins, tells us that approval was obtained in advance of the partial purchase.
“[A]t this point in time Fergie isn’t a limited partner of the team,” Greene told us by e-mail. “While she has been pre-approved by the NFL as a limited partner, that transaction has not yet formally been consummated by our ownership group.”
There’s no reason to think it won’t happen. At this point, however, the deal has not been done.
Greene also tells us that Jennifer Lopez is not a limited partner in the team and owns no portion of it. Instead, the limited partnership has been acquired by her husband, Marc Anthony.
UPDATE: Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Daily properly characterized Fergie’s status on October 14.

In other words, NFL owners approved Jennifer Lopez, and then she sold it to Marc Anthony.
This is the best the NFL can offer in defense of itself? Whatever.

I think the difference is that Fergie or J-Lo (or any entertainer) owning a stake in an NFL franchise will bring awareness of football to music fans. Having Rush as a part owner would bring awareness of Rush to football fans. As an example: Dolphins vs. anyone on a monday night game = A quick 3 second shot of Fergie in a skybox watching the game or chatting with her guests. Whereas if Rush were involved, you would hear his crazy hate-laced comments all the time on his radio or TV shows if he still has them.
Should all people be treated equally? No, they shouldn’t be. If you disagree with that, then why don’t you let the homeless guy on the corner babysit your kids instead of the high school girl? I bet he could use the money more than she could!
Does the NFL ever say what the buy in was for any of these celebrity “owners?”
If it is more than $1,000 it is WAY too much for the NFL equivalent of a vanity publishing.
The gov. has absolutely no right to dictate to Goodell who can and can’t own or be part of an ownership group for an NFL franchise. The other owners have to approve anyways. Politics completely aside, I don’t want Limbaugh in this league and noone else should either. Look at what he’s already said on his radio show. It would have been a disaster of epic proportions. I truly mean that….OF EPIC PROPORTIONS.
The fact that it was even brought up at the Judiciary Committee is sad in itself. I’m not sticking up for Goodell, but I would have loved for him to come back with some smartass remark about them not getting their facts straight about what Rush really did and didn’t say, and who, in fact, REALLY does hold ownership rights with the Dolphins.

Typical of a Congress that adds pork to every bill, they found time to discuss Rush Limbaugh when the topic was concussions in football.
The NFL has every right to accept or reject any person they want for ownership. Fair or not, Limbaugh is a polarizing figure in this country. Fergie is not. J-Lo is not (even though she doesn’t actually own the team). There was no controversy surrounding either of them until King created some.
The vast majority of NFL owners may well agree with Limbaugh’s politics. But these are a entertainment-based, bottom line businesses that strives to have fans unite and embrace their teams.
OT: Fergie and the BEP already have a marketing deal with the team. Fans at Land Shark are familiar with them. And Fergie appears in PSA’s on the jumbotron every week.

———-As somone who doesn’t listen to Rush, I do know that what he says is no different than what other people say. The problem is Limbaugh is a white conservative, if he were a black liberal, we would write it off as he is “being honest” or “keeping it real” or be afraid to say anything. Rush’s comments may be divisive in some respects, but as far as labeling the NFL as something comparable to the “Bloods and Crips” isnt too far off.
Check Florio’s police blotter if you need examples. He calls it it as he see it. If you want Rush off the map, you should be working towards Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson as well.
