Adams will evaluate Fisher at end of year

Titans owner Bud Adams got his wish: Vince Young will start at quarterback this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The long-term question in Tennessee is whether coach Jeff Fisher will get his wish to continue coaching the team next season.  NFL Network’s Steve Wyche said Friday that Adams plans to “evaluate” Fisher’s coaching status at the end of the season.

This isn’t surprising, but Adams is putting his coach on notice. Wyche said that he’s heard this statement “time and time again” from owners that are planning to make a change.

At this stage, that may be speculative. But it’s fair to wonder if this 16-year marriage is ready to dissolve.  Heck, Fisher might not mind getting a chance to be a coaching free agent during an offseason in which a few high profile jobs may be available.

if i were fisher i’d take the year off. 16 yrs is a lot of stress. he should take at least 1 yr off like holmgren, shanny, herm and cowher(2yrs)

“evaluate” = Pack Your Bags, and get that fineeee lookin mullet out of Nashville!

Jeff Fisher is a very good coach. If the Titans fire him after the season he will have several phone calls that very day. I believe Cowher hasn’t come back because he’s waiting for the Panthers job to open up. His family lives in N.Carolina, he has said he wants to remain close to them…He is probably waiting for John Fox to get canned which looks like it will happen after this season. Would be very interesting if this offseason you had John Gruden, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, Bill Cowher, and Jeff Fisher all looking for a job. It makes first year coaches doing bad feel very un-easy I’m sure. Raheem Morris, Steve Spagnuolo, Eric Mangini, Todd Haley. Owners would have to seriously consider firing guys like that after 1 season if they could get one of those big named, proven coaches to come in.

Too bad the Bears won’t let go of Lovie Smith. Fisher would look real good in orange and navy blue.

No, Fisher should go straight to Tampa.

If Adams “evaluation” ends with Fisher not coaching in TN next year, it would be a mistake.
Then again, maybe Adams is just waiting for Cleveland to fire Eric Mangini so he can trot down to Nashville and “change the culture”.
And by “changing the culture” I mean suck worse.
Maybe Mangini can bring all of those former ex-Jets and future ex-Browns with him.

If Adams foolishly fires Fisher after this season, then here’s hoping (foolishly) that Al Davis ponies up the cash to bring in him and the staff of his choosing (ha!).
Already looking forward to the 2010 season…. sad.
    Raiderkarma (thank you, Al Davis)

one thing is certain,if fisher gets the heave ho jerrah will be there to catch him.fisher is the ideal coach for that bunch of misfits, fisher will get them pulling in the right direction quickly and they’ll be winning regularly.much to my dismay.

@Billsfan27 – The picture of Irony…a Bills fan making fun of another team’s coach. As long as Dick Jauron is your coach, and your team is as terrible as it is. I’d worry about your team more. By the way haven’t the Browns beat the Bills like 3 or 4 straight years now? That’s really embarassing for Buffalo.

    Ok, this needs qualification:
“Jeff Fisher is a very good coach”
Jeff Fisher is a very good REGULAR SEASON coach. 1 Super Bowl in 16 years doesn’t necessarily make you very good. Would you say Jon Gruden or Bill Calahan (sp) were good HC just because they got to a SB (and in Gruden’s case, won)?
The Titans (Oilers) have had more than 1 team capable of winning a SB, especially in the late 90′s/early part of this decade.
This is a situation he needs to get out of. That defense is horrible. The offense has a passing game that scares no one. And they aren’t going to beat Indy as long as Peyton Manning is there, and the Texans are starting to come around too.

I agree completely, as for Fisher, i wouldnt fire him, look at how great he did last year, that shows how good a coach he is, fire him, he finds a job fast……as for the first year coaches not doing well, first off Spagnuolo won’t get fired and shouldnt, this is his first year and the team playing badly isnt on him, he was given a horriable offensive team to work with, the defense has played better…..Haley won’t go since Scott Pioli hired him……Mangini may go, but i dont see it yet, since the browns owner may want to see how he does in the draft……and dont see Morris getting fired unless he loses every game.

Anybody who puts on their number 1 hated rival’s jersey in public to, “feel like a winner” wants to be fired.

  13. Neon Archie says: Oct 30, 2009 10:01 PM

Bud should check with Fisher’s wife first before he fires him

  14. employer says: Oct 30, 2009 10:37 PM

You need a quarterback to compete in the NFL.
Fisher doesn’t have one. Hasn’t since McNair. A simple cursory glance at history supports that. If you put in a QB, even as pedestrian as Sage Rosenfels in his system they would be at least a .500 club right now. You can win for only a short period of time with smoke and mirrors.
All this guy does is win. He has organized some very dangerous teams over his career with the Titens. I can recall many occasions over the years when Tenn. was one of those teams that you just didn’t want to play.

Joe C, most coaches can’t even get to the post season. I’m happy with getting there and not winning the super bowl if the other option is not getting there at all.
If Adams fires Fisher, I hope one of my teams jumps on him quick.
Employer you nailed it. The Titans don’t have a QB, and it doesn’t matter who the head coach is you can’t win without one. Kerry Collins overachieved last year and came back to earth this year.

Joe C: No one has done more with less than Jeff Fisher.
I guess if all you do is look at stats, then I understand how you can feel that way.
How Fisher has managed to win as many games as he has, with the Titans constant turnover of key players is a miracle, in my opinion.

  17. Richm2256 says: Oct 31, 2009 3:30 PM

Fisher needs a change of scenery after 16 years with that team, and needs to go somewhere where HE gets to pick who the QB is goiing to be; Tennessee needs a new hand on the wheel as well, someone the players haven’t tuned out to.
In all honesty, Fisher is a good coach given a good team, and a bad coach given a bad one; and the Titans aren’t as good as they’d like to think they are. It’s a 50-50 split, blame-wise
