Westbrook a "game time decision" but signs aren't promising

Eagles coach Andy Reid did not back off his assessment Friday that Brian Westbrook was a game-time decision despite Westbrook’s third consecutive missed practice.

Reid is waiting for more test results to come back to clear Westbrook for phase one of a possible return in which he could test himself on the field.  While there were reports Westbrook’s headaches went away Thursday, Reid dodged the question when asked Friday.

“I think he’s feeling pretty good right now,” Reid said.  “We’ll see how things go here.”

ESPN 950 in Philadelphia doesn’t expect Westbrook to get any good news from doctors that will allow him to play so quickly.  We suspect Reid is just leaving the possibility open, marking Westbrook as questionable, as a form of gamesmanship.

At least we hope that’s the case.  Considering Westbrook lost consciousness on Monday and all the scary things we know and don’t know about concussions, it seems crazy to think Westbrook could actually suit up Sunday.

Also questionable for Philly: Macho Harris and defensive end Chris Clemons.
Victor Abiamiri, Kevin Curtis, and Dmitri Paterson are out.

For the Giants, linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Chris Canty returned to practice Friday, but will miss another game.  Cornerback Aaron Ross is also out.  Ahmad Bradshaw is probable with his foot injury.  Mario Manningham is questionable after injuring his shoulder at practice Friday.

Reid is an idiot – everyone knows that Westbrook is not going to play so quit playing your game. You’re not fooling the other team into thinking they don’t need to study up on McCoy.
I hate when coaches play these games thinking they are being clever.

Reid is desperate. He knows they have less chance of winning without Westbrook. He doesn’t care about Westbrook’s future health as long as the Eagles get a W this week.

What the heck has happened to Andy Reid? Wake up! Do not let Brian Westbrook go out on a football field until a much longer time passes, like a month.
Westbrook could suffer permanent brain damage.
    Wake up, Andy.

(@ CF4L) you’re a moron .. EVERY COACH DOES IT.. so that makes Reid a idiot?? Obviously he isnt going to come out and say “hey Westbrook’s not playing so just worry about studying our Rookie RB and dont put any time into thinking about Westbrook, no problem..” You are an idiot if you think any coach WILL or SHOULD say that and which is why you’re on the computer typing about it like a little moron and he’s out their actually doing something…

Its not really clear that leaving him out for a month vs. letting him play this Sunday will make much of a difference.
The damage may have been done.

no way westbrook plays especially after all the flak goodell received in congress about concussions this week. if westbrook did play and get hurt again, nfl would never hear the end of it.
having said that reid’s smokescreen fools no one – giants know he’s not playing. but this kid mccoy this anyway despite being lightly used has gained more yards than westbrook. and will have a breakout game against the giants defense that has not played well against the over .500 teams they have played.

  7. Ocelot138 says: Oct 30, 2009 4:54 PM

Yeah! I mean, why do the coaches even bother to cover their mouths when they’re calling in plays? I mean, it’s not like the other team’s not going to be able to figure out by the down-and-distance what plays are going to be run.

I am 100% certain that Westbrook will no play this sunday versus the Giants. Team Doctors, Marty Morniwheg, and Andy Reid all said on Thursday that even though Westbrook has played in multiple games without practicing the entire week leading up to that weekends game that this time because it was a serious head injury they wanted to see how Westbrook performed on the practice field before they let him get into a game situation. Seeing that he didn’t practice Friday that tells me he’s not going to play.
If Im wrong please ban me from commenting because I know nothing about the Eagles or football.

how in the HELL is this even up for debate??? Didn’t Goddell just face the Senate committee over long term head trauma brought on by playing the greatest game ever known to man?

  10. vtopa says: Oct 30, 2009 5:32 PM

If I were a reporter and that tub of goo, Andy Reid had the temerity to lie to my face by saying that Westbrook was a “game-time decision” I woul dsimply laugh in his face and walk out of the media room. Does anyone seriously believe that Tom Coughlin is worried about the possibility of Brian Westbrook playing? I don’t think that Justin Tuck is really that worried…

In Philly, they do it to keep the millions of flies that you obese, stinking retarded lowbrows attract from flying into their mouths.

Thus the 1 point the Giants are giving. ‘Zat ‘nuf ?

  13. penguininbondage says: Oct 30, 2009 5:58 PM

As usual Vox thinks using the term lowbrow is amusing.
They cover them because the tv cameras Zoom in and some teams might get a lip reader to steal signals.
Anybody ever meet a lowbrow? Met plenty of unibrows.
Please vox, whay is a lowbrow?

Wow, and what about Hicktown, Texas? Half of the population is inbred rednecks. You’ve probably never been to Philly. All you do is make those gay computer graphics.

Reid is completely worthless when it comes to providing any type of information. But in this case, he should just do the proper thing and say that he believes it is not in Westbrook’s best interest to play, even if he feels OK. It is insane for someone that was knocked unconscious for a while less than a week ago to play this week. I know this is a business but damn. Just do the right thing Andy for once and gain some respect from the football fans and general public. We are not talking about a sprained ankle here.
Can you imagine what would happen if Westbrook did play and he got knocked out again and it caused him to have a life-long problem?

  16. jreed says: Oct 30, 2009 6:55 PM

Come one guys! Really! Wake up and smell the Doo-Doo! There is about a .10% Chance that Westbrook will play this week. AR wants to keep that option open IF (Big if) The Dr’s Clear him to play. I am sure that Westy wants back on the field as does any other NFL Player would. This is not a “Guess which back im starting” Strategy!! That is stupid because the Defense always prepares for the #1 and #2 RBs. Esp if they rotate out like Westy and Mccoy have been doing.

  17. jreed says: Oct 30, 2009 7:08 PM

OMG Holeinone09 could you believe if westbrook stayed out of the game then fell down the stairs or got hit by a car or some jealous ex-girl friend shot him…Football is these guys lives! They choose to live it and injuries are part of it. Think about Firemen…You think they worry about burning alive or choking to death on thick black smoke while they are on the Job??? No…they think of the Rewards of the job..Just like the NFL Players do. I am worried about westbrook at the present..but if he is cleared to play??? Nope not at all. it is a Doctors call…not a Coaches!

Soooooooo What does this have to do with WB’s Head injury??? Oh and BTW. Alot of the “Old School” Coaches cover their mouths because other teams would hire Lip readers and Radio in the Offense play call to the sidelines…I think this is illegal now under that Cheatreiot video taping scandal!

Sarcasm, friend. Why is Andy Reid insisting Westy is a “game time decision”? Same reason. We KNOW that Westy isn’t going to play, but it’s the same probably-inconsequential attempts at secrecy that all teams engage in. I just laugh at these “experts” on PFT and how “disgusted” they are about injury reports, as if it’s a real reason to be mad.

  20. Ocelot138 says: Oct 30, 2009 8:31 PM

    Oh, and Vox?
Everyone’s Googled you by now. You don’t have one fat, greasy leg to stand on when it comes to calling people obese.
You look like Poppin’ Fresh and Rosie O’Donnell tried to abort their love child and failed. You’re the poster child for birth control.

The fact of the matter is that Reid is not trying to be “clever”, he is just going through the necessary motions. While it seems ridiculous for him to make the assumption that someone might actually believe that Westbrook may play, it is even more ridiculous for him to say that Westbrook will not play.

Tell that to Leonard Weaver and LeSean McCoy. It doesn’t look like they got that fun fact.
