Manning moving, Colts settling

Peyton Manning's numbers tell part of the story of today's 49ers-Colts game: Manning is moving the ball efficiently, going 20-of-31 for 244 yards, with no interceptions.

But the scoreboard tells the bigger part of the story: The 49ers lead 14-12 after the Colts have been forced to settle for four Matt Stover field goals.

Although Manning and Reggie Wayne are having their customary big games, they haven't been able to get into the end zone. That's in large part thanks to the 49ers' front seven overpowering the Colts' offensive line. The Colts have managed just 24 rushing yards on 11 attempts. The 49ers have also sacked Manning three times.

Quarterback Alex Smith, making his first start for the 49ers in two years, has been mediocre, completing 11 of 18 passes for 121 yards. But Smith has a touchdown pass to Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore has a 64-yard touchdown run, and that's why the 49ers are surprising the Colts in Indianapolis.

"Quarterback Alex Smith, making his first start for the 49ers in two years, has been mediocre, completing 1 of 18 passes for 121 yards."

He may not have a great completion percentage, but his yards per completion is extraordinary.

1 of 18 for 121 yards and a touchdown? That must have been one hell of a completion.

"completing 1 of 18 passes for 121 yards"

So threw it from the back of the end zone to the other back end zone? That's one hell of a pass!

Mediocre? 1 for 18 for 121 yards? Come on florio. He's looked pretty good and if he had completed one pass for 121 yards that would be pretty friggin amazing.

11 for 18 121 yards and a Touchdown you said were his stats at the time of this post?

Completing 61% of your passes for an 11 yard average and 1 touchdown isnt mediocre in my book thats pretty darn good. Its not Smith's fault that he's not getting the play calls to put up 300 yards. They have a good running back and there a running team under Singeltary so you can't expect much more out of a 49ers qb no matter whos under center.

Route36West, Those numbers translate into a QB rating of around 77.

    That is mediocre.

The Niners lost the game because of Jimmy Raye. He is not running the offense in a way that will play to his team's strengths, he's licking Sing's butthole and running for 1 yard every play. Jimmy Raye is the reason why the Niners do not have an offense.
