Packers blew chance to challenge Favre-to-Dugan touchdown

After the Vikings scored on a short touchdown pass from Brett Favre to Jeff Dugan, the Packers missed a great opportunity to challenge the play.

Dugan was going to the ground as he caught the ball and rumbled into the end zone.  And when he struck the ground, Dugan lost the ball.

Though it took Dugan several steps to actually fall, he was never upright after making the catch.  If the referee had agreed on review, the touchdown would have been taken off the board.

So the Packers should have thrown the red flag.  Success would have given the Vikings a fourth down, and they likely would have taken the short field goal, which would have pushed the lead to seven.

Instead, the lead is 11.  Though not insurmountable (especially with Aaron Rodgers just giving Vikings fans flashbacks to Steve Young circa 1988), those four points could ultimately make the difference.

Florio showing he has no understanding of NFL rules once again. How surprising.

  2. Fan of Football says: Nov 1, 2009 6:50 PM

It was a catch, would not have been overturned.

Florio, stick to writing. You are full of it!!!

  4. seaner44 says: Nov 1, 2009 6:51 PM

TD would still be good, you are wrong. He still caught the ball and broke the plane of the goal.

  5. TheBigEasy99 says: Nov 1, 2009 6:53 PM

It was a touchdown. Dugan caught the ball, turned and made a “football move” into the end zone. Once he crossed the goal line whether he held onto the ball or not was meaningless.

  6. Deb says: Nov 1, 2009 6:55 PM

Soooo the refs … gave Trippy Dugan … a “phantom” touchdown? Wonder if MrHumble will spend this week wailing about the evil unfairness of it on every article on PFT?
The irony of this is so richly delicious it must be fattening :-)

Making a football move isn’t in the rule definition and Florio was right because he didn’t have clear control as he went to the ground and you must maintain control all the way to the ground the play would have been overturned nice call Mike.

  12. Deb says: Nov 1, 2009 7:06 PM

@Pervy … Before you call me out, I was away from the set and missed the Dugan score, so I’m just commenting on what Florio said. You’re a stand-up Vikes fan, but it’s nice to see the endless whiners get their britches caught on their own pitchforks–even for a moment.

  13. danlinker says: Nov 1, 2009 7:09 PM

yeah, if florio was the coach he would have handled it right? Idiot. It was a TD.

  14. slipkid says: Nov 1, 2009 7:10 PM

looks like the vikes just got another such unchallenged td.
pack laid some wood on favre earlier. vikes then had to punt. pack should throw some more 4-3 in to keep kampman on the field.

  15. R8R_BOB says: Nov 1, 2009 7:11 PM

I saw the dude catch the ball and turned into the endzone. Yes he did go to the ground and yes he fumbled the ball but two things happen to disprove you idea of challenging the TD.
    1) His spin into the endzone would be called a football move to validate possession.
    2) During the spin, he broke the plane with the football so anything that happen afterward would be moot since it was called a TD.
Green Bay knew like everyone else that it was a TD………Goodnight

They made no difference and the game was not as close as the end score would make one think.
With Favres 4 TD passes today and with him having what may be the best year that he has ever played. Green Bay can now expect to take a back seat to the Vikings from here on out.

  34. Sterling says: Nov 1, 2009 7:32 PM

He doesn’t need to maintain control once the ball breaks the plane.
Florio has no understanding of the finer points of the game, if this is any evidence.
Doesn’t matter. Favre handily beats the Pack with 4 TDs. Stuff it, Ted Thompson.

  36. HarrisonHits says: Nov 1, 2009 7:34 PM

All you guys talking about breaking the plane you are wrong where a catch is concerned, as the league has made a point of stressing this year.
A receiver going to the ground must maintain control of the ball after he hits the ground. The league has been very inconsistent in enforcing this rule but that could easily have been overturned based on that.

The Vikes couldn’t challenge Grant’s fumble on first play…whistle blew due to forward progress and it’s not a challengeable play, as the announcers correctly pointed out.

  39. PKep85 says: Nov 1, 2009 7:38 PM

Should have challenged. The ball was constantly in motion, not sure if he had possesion of it. Worth a challenge at least. And no, the TO weren’t all used up by that point.
I was asking for that to be challenged myself, but the stupid Viking fan next to me was just being a retard (not unlike most Queen fans) claiming the ball never moved. It moved, and I would have asked if he ever really had possesion of it.
For those of you claiming you don’t need possesion once it crosses the line, I do need to say, you need possesion at some point in time on the play. I don’t know if that ever happened, and that’s all the Packer Fan Florio was saying. I mean, we all know Florio is a closet Packer fan right?

  40. favre_owns_pack_2x says: Nov 1, 2009 7:38 PM

  43. Franchise says: Nov 1, 2009 7:42 PM

    1. I dont think the Pack had any TOs left, so they could not challenge.
    2. Dugan caght the ball, took 3 steps, crossed the plane of the goal line, and the ground forced the ball out.
There is no need to dispute he had control (because he did) nor is there any need to dispute a “football move” due to the fact he had control and took 3 steps to the endzone.
    The TD is good.
The question I have is the crappy 4 and 1 call Chilly goes for instead of the FG, and the shotty clock management before the half.
This game could have gone the wrong way, but the Silver Fox and the Vikes still roll on!!

  45. Deb says: Nov 1, 2009 7:48 PM

Okay, Mike, I DVR’d the game and since I missed the Dugan TD the first time around, I just went back and watched three times on slo-mo.
Dugan caught the pass outside the end zone, then crossed the goal line, fell, and lost the ball. Since he was running into the end zone with the ball, all he had to do was break the plane before losing control. He did. Maintaining possession to the ground is about making the catch, which he did before crossing into the end zone.
The only possible challenge was whether he had control of the ball from the time of the catch until he lost it–in other words, was it a completed pass? To my eye, he seemed to have control, but even watching it in slo-mo three times, it was hard to be positive. That means there was not irrefutable evidence to overturn the call on the field–which was touchdown.
Review or no, the call would have stood.

BTW – give Chilly his extension. That way when Favre is done, you go back to trying to figure out who your QB is. Remember Chilly is the coach who thinks TJack is a real QB. I hope he gets about a five year extension. If the Queens don’t make it this year, they never will. Good thing Chilly knows how to get Packer players to come to MN.

Bob Nelson, I don’t have time right now, can you do me a favor and make us a list of Percy Harvin’s plays today? You seem to like your lists about Harvin. Come on Bob, even you have to admit he had a hell of a game against your Pack!!!

LOL @ all you Packer fans who talked shit all week long and thought you had a win wrapped up. We played without Winfield, big deal, you still couldn’t win the game.
The officials gave you gifts, and you still couldn’t win the game. Grant fumbled on the opening drive, the Vikings recover, then they aren’t allowed to challenge because the officials blew the whistle to fast, and giving the Packers the ball when they didn’t deserve it. Then they called the Vikings for roughing the passer on Rodgers when that wasn’t even close, and you still couldn’t do anything with it. Then on Berrian’s TD catch, the defender damn near ripped his head off his shoulders, and no flag. GB should have been penalized on the kickoff, but were handed another gift.
What happened to GB’s defense messing Favre up in this one? So much for that huh? Maybe next year. However, Minnesota’s defense did mess Rodgers up pretty damn good again in this one. 14 sacks in two games this season, wow, what a beating. I give the ole cross eyed QB some credit though, he took a beating and while he was slow to get off the ground several times, he did get up.
Do you feel that? That is the wind of the broom coming across from the sweep. I really hope this makes all those so called “expert” NFL analysts feel stupid for trying to make every excuse under the sun for the Packers and thinking they would win this game. They couldn’t win this game, and they could derail the Vikings because they simply aren’t good enough. The Vikings with Favre are a much better team then GB. 7TD passes and 0 INTs for the old man, looks like he still has it doesn’t it? SKOL VIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Making a football move isn’t in the rule definition and Florio was right because he didn’t have clear control as he went to the ground and you must maintain control all the way to the ground the play would have been overturned nice call Mike.”
WRONG!! Come on people, the only time a receiver has to maintain posession all the way down is during a catch made IN the endzone. If the receiver has posession prior to entering the endzone then all he has to do is break the plane with posession of the football. Watching it carefully in slow-mo Dugan had the ball tightly wrapped up as he broke the plane and it the ball shifted when he was hit, and then popped out when he hit the ground.
I mean I can scarcely believe the stupidity here; people have no idea what they are talking about. It’s almost funny, making statements like the receiver has to maintain posession all the way done: that’s when a catch is made in the end zone, if a receiver already has posession before breaking the plane all that is necessary is that he has control of the ball when he breaks the plane. There is a very obvious and crucial key difference here. Don’t be so quick to think you know something the entire Professional Packers’ coaching staff didn’t.

I must post my weekly comment on how incredibly awesome it is to see the viqueens fans come out of the woodwork again and out from under the bandwagon. When you get smacked for a one and done this year in the playoffs and stand there with your hands on your hips like you did after the Gary Mortenson choke job during the NFC showdown against Atlanta, it’ll make this all the more sweet. Brett will retire (gasp) and your fan base in that piece of shit, half balloon/half bagpipe you call a stadium will once again be half full. Blackouts will ensue and Zygi will move you pigtailed, horn-blowing flamers down to LA…where your team may be man enough to handle the outdoor elements. Philly will whip your asses…but congrats on the NFC North.

Everything I read by everyone is wrong. I was at the game. The Packers, because they just blew their 3rd time out before that, could not challenge because you have to have a time out left to challenge. No timeouts means no ability to challenge, simple as that. As for the Packers and Favre, TT should resign immediately and MM should get fired in the process. How embarrassing that must have felt for those two. It hurts being a Packer fan with inept leadership….

  70. Canned Heat says: Nov 1, 2009 9:56 PM

When weeks 19 or 20 are upon us and it looks like the #4 is going to the big show again, I’ll back him and all of you and hope he can win you your first Vince Lombardi Trophy. Until that day, cross your legs, toes, and fingers that he doesn’t somehow morph into the same Favre the Packers and Jets had for the last 5 and pisses down his leg and starts playing .500 with the opposing team’s DB’s. How amazingly similar all of this chatter is to the Culpepper/Moss/Carter years when you purple pussies thought you had the Super Bowl in the bag by week 12…4 words clowns. 1) WATCH 2) OUT 3) FOR 4) PHILLY

TD would still be good, you are wrong. He still caught the ball and broke the plane of the goal.
This is correct. Florio is an idiot. Learn the rules and then write.

I can’t wait ’til Favre goes into the HOF as a Packer and then all of you bandwagon pricks that came out of nowhere can start ripping on Lord Favre again like he somehow owes you clowns.

All you fans talking about football move and breaking the plane are the ones who don’t have it right. If a player goes to the ground in the course of making a catch, including in the end zone, he must maintain posession of the ball all the way through hitting the ground. If they are knocked to the ground that is a different story. I could show you two videos of Steeler players who caught balls in the endzone, were never touched, had both feet down, but went to the ground on their own and lost posession of the ball when hitting the ground. Both times the touchdowns were nullified.
When the play Florio is referring happened I was also wondering why the Packers did not challenge it.

  78. Bones22 says: Nov 1, 2009 10:39 PM

Hey Deb did you watch the Vikings Pitt game last week. Where on that replay did you see a trip by Dugan. Your just a complete idiot, who doesnt have any clue in what you are talking about. Do us all a favor and go watch soccer or something.

  79. dadindebt6 says: Nov 1, 2009 10:43 PM

Steelers vs. Ravens Monday night in September 2008. Santonio Holmes catches the pass, takes three steps and dives for the goal line. On hitting the ground the ball comes loose. Ruling on the field was completed pass, fumble, recoverd by Holmes. On review, the play was rules incomplete because the reciever was never touched and did not control the ball throughout the process of going to the ground.

” Cheap shots galore by Packer defense as well”
Wahh Wahh. Every tackle made you think is a cheap shot. Dude grow the hell up. It’s called football.
and for you moron Viking fans to think you dominated this game is beyond stupid. To dominate a game, you actually have to dominate the entire game not just two quarters. Get it thru those thick heads of yours.
“However, it was interesting to see that Raji’s only contribution was a facemask penalty.”
How about Clay Matthews? The other first round pick? He played great last night but once again you go straight to Raji and try to make it look like the Packers suck at drafting.
“They couldn’t win this game, and they could derail the Vikings because they simply aren’t
    good enough.”
Seriously? They aren’t good enough? Dude the Packers came back from a 21 point deficit to make it as close as 4 points after the Vikings defense once again blew another lead. They had a chance of winning until the final whistle.

  82. Bob Nelson says: Nov 1, 2009 11:05 PM

Raidr fans would agree that the NFL can say that is not a catch.
The difference in those points as well as the Packers missed FG late and the botched 2 point conversion would have lead to a Packer victory.
It was obvious the nation’s NFL fans that the superior team did not win because of too many mistakes. Not challenging a bad TD call was one of them.

When you make a catch before crossing the plane (which dugan did if you watch the replay, the ball doesn’t move) you do not have to maintain control of the ball after the plane is broken,

  86. Deb says: Nov 1, 2009 11:26 PM

    @Bones22 …
Yes, I watched the game. I also thoroughly rehashed that play with several whiny Vikings fans last week. Some of them could even spell and punctuate and managed to call me much more colorful and interesting things than “idiot.” But the grownup Vikings fans have now accepted the loss and moved on to celebrating their win over the Pack, a division victory that will matter much more to them in the long run than the non-conference loss to us (you do understand conference/non-conference and all that good stuff, right?).
But instead of enjoying your victory, you are wasting the night of your triumph whining to a girl about a week-old loss to the Steelers. I’d tell you to man up .. but I hate to suggest something so obviously beyond your capabilities.

  87. Frank Burns says: Nov 2, 2009 1:03 AM

Well well, the same Vikes fans who don’t know what a LEG WHIP is, are now ripping Florio for having no “understanding of the rules.”
The delicious irony is that both plays involved Dugan.

Let’s petition the league to get the win taken away! This was a grave injustice. How can the officials sleep at night? The commissioner must inform all officials that they must screw the Vikings.

  90. josdin00 says: Nov 2, 2009 10:34 AM

It was a close enough call to justify a challange. Dugan did ‘catch’ the ball outside of the endzone, but he was falling down as he caught it. Even though he was able to take a few steps to try to maintain his balance, it still might have been determined that he was ‘going to the ground’ as he made the catch.
If that’s what the refs had decided, then the TD would have been taken off the board.
Two different sets of rules apply to making a catch, depending on whether or not a receiver is ‘going to the ground’ when he makes a catch.
If he wasn’t ‘going to the ground’, then it was clear that he had possession as he crossed the plane of the goalline, and that the ground can’t cause a fumble, and all that other stuff that people are citing to say it was a TD. All you need, in this case, is control and two feet down, which is what everyone is used to looking for. Dugan had that.
If he was ‘going to the ground’, then he never had possession of the ball, and therefore, he couldn’t have crossed the plane of the goal with the ball. In order for possession to be established when you’re ‘going to the ground’, you have to maintain control of the ball all the way through hitting the ground. Dugan didn’t.
It sure seems that there are a lot of people that don’t know this part of the rule. And it sure seems that a lot of them are happy to call Florio an idiot because he does know the rule.
And would you please stop talking about a ‘football move’. That term is no longer in the rulebook….a change that occured before last season, if I remember correctly.

  91. mrcrea says: Nov 2, 2009 1:42 PM

Let me put forth two rules that seem to come into play here, ok 3 then.
    1) Player must have contorol of the ball….Check
    2) Ball must cross goal line…..Check
    3) not a fumble if the ground causes a fumble or breaks the ball out of the players hands….Check.
Lets remember football 101, any of these touch and the person is down…Butt, Back, Ball(this applies here) Knee(also applies here actually hit before the ball or the butt.
So to recap, he had possession, the ball crossed the goal line( TD Right there) He stumbled or rambled or however you want to justify them not being steps into the endzone and then sat on his side and the ground cause the ball to pop out. Even a 10 yr old can make this call. How can guy who runs a football website not be able to?

I wasn’t on here telling any of you purple pussies to watch out for the Packers, because I knew they’d have a tough go of it. When you clowns sober up from the Favre flavored Kool-Aid and realize a seriously shit team almost came back on your asses and think of what the Eagles and/or Saints will do to you pukes in the playoffs…it will be sweet. I can handle the shit talk about Favre because I watched him pound you fairies for most of the 16 years he played in GB. And just like it’s always been…the second Favre is gone and you’re back to reality, your games will be blacked out, there will be a surplus of that piss swill Grain Belt across that shit state of yours, and hiding at the Mall of America will be your only means of recreation other than some ice fishing. The fact that you clowns continually piss in the face of karma and predict yourselves the next Super Bowl Champs when leading or tied for the division only half way thru a season is astounding. I’ll give you guys credit…you’re optimistic. We’ve seen this before with you turds…(see 1998 choke job). Sit back, enjoy some football and cherish the time you have at the top of the NFC North. Trust me and anyone else that doesn’t go to bed with yellow f-ing braids in their hair when we say you will not be watching your team anymore by the 17th of January.

    @Canned Heat
Whatever bud, we won the North last year without Favre too, we did it with T-Jack, and i think that is pretty much brutal on the part of the Pack that they couldn’t muster up a better record with A-Rod “the chosen one”. Look at all the teams that dominated and didn’t win the superbowl the 1998 vikes aren’t the only one, correct me if im wrong but the Patriots who won all but one game in the 2007 season didn’t win it either. Not saying we are going to win the super bowl but i am not going to lose sleep over a team who lost to the Oakland Raiders, the saints are a legit team, no doubting that one, never said that we would beat them but i am not going to say that the vikes are going to lay down and take the loss from them either. I don’t get into pissing matches with big tough guys on the internet cause in the end it isn’t worth it, but don’t take away from a team just because you can’t cope with the fact that Favre is playing for your rivals, i would be pissed if moss or carter or smith or tarkenton went to play for the Bearly’s, the Hackers or the Lamens.
    Cheers
