Raiders make it interesting, but botch final drive

You never know what Raiders team will show up.

The team that went to San Diego Sunday tried its best to make up for Jamarcus Russell, but ultimately came up short 24-16.

After a great red zone stop forced a Chargers field goal, JaMarcus Russell got the ball down eight with 4:43 to go. After Russell completed a clutch fourth-and-seven to move the ball past midfield, I was silly enough to tweet that Russell might just pull off a great drive.

What followed nicely encapsulated the Raiders season.

First down: Russell is sacked and fumbles, but the Raiders recover.

2nd-and-23: False start on the Raiders

2nd-and-28: Russell is sacked again. (By Shawne Merriman.)  On the play, two Raiders wide receivers ran into each other and both fell down on the play.  Seriously, you have to see this.

3rd-and-31: 11-yard pass to Zach Miller

4th-and-20: Russell throws to Johnnie Lee Higgins over the middle.  The Raiders have a pretty good looking hook and ladder set up, but Higgins forgets to catch the ball first, instead attempting a touch pass like in basketball.

Game over.

Russell finished with 109 yards, one interception, and the fumble.  The Chargers finished with a much-needed victory to move to 4-3, but face the Giants, Eagles, and Broncos the next three weeks.

This was yet another game that fat slob cost us, he was beyond brutal. Game after game, he lets the team down.

He sees nothing and he's dumb as a box of rocks.

With ANY kind of QB, this team is in the playoff hunt.

Doesn't make any difference, Gregg, Al's gonna start Russell next game anyway. Poor Raider fans. They deserve so much better.

did you watch the game? Barnes stinks and we dont have any WR's...all of our wide outs are rookies...last time that happened was 1996.
    Come back ChAZ

Poor play calling by Al's puppet and JaMarcus and Cable looking lost on the last drive did not help!! How do a QB and a coach not realize that you don't burn time outs with 2 minutes left when you need 8 points. If you dont get it, you can't get the ball back. Cable and JaMarcus need to go..And it starts with saying bye to AL!!!

It's no surprise that San Diego won, but they should be worried. The Chargers have Rivers, Jackson, Gates, Sproles, and the shadow of LT in a home game against a team that sports an incompetent quarterback and wide receivers that run bumper-car routes, and still struggled to get the victory. That defense is soft inside, and probably would have been rolled up if Oakland had a quarterback that could throw downfield and a receiver that could catch.

    You say this about J.R.:

"He sees nothing and he's dumb as a box of rocks."

I'd say that the people who drafted him and own the team have to be about as dumb or dumber.

But hey, it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of fans...

Congrat to JaMarcus for throwing for 1,000 yds ... wow it only took him 8 games ... HOF is right around the corner.

We have a dumb owner, coach and a qb that is fat and no heart. This season is over.

Question for you, how can the Raiders fumble the ball on 1st down, be called for a false start and have the yardage marched off then have the fumble reviewed and not have the ball returned to the pre penalty spot? Five yards would have made a big difference on that fourth down play.

Anyone in Oakland still think that Heyward-Bay is a better pick than Crabtree, raise their hand. To date, Heyward-Bay has 5 catches for 74 yards in 8 games. Crabtree has 11 catches for 137 yards in 2 games. I see a disparity here. I guess all you Oaktown Faider fans were right. Al Zombiebones Davis knew what he was doing. ;-)

    So, the Raiders blew it?

    That's certainly news.

Hey I was just wandering if the refs screwed up on the the last drive. When Jamarcus got sacked it was 2nd-23 then the false start made it 2-28 but then they decide to review the fumble. It was correct to be a fumble but didn't the false start mean another play started where the review shouldn't have been called and if it was such a close play in the first place that booth review should have came up a lot sooner than it did and the false start should not of happen when it did.

In the end though hook and ladder was setup perfectly but leave it to the inexperience raiders to screw it up.

the Raiders have an offense thats beyond terrible. Horrible play calling, bad clock management, no WR's, and one of the worst QB's of all time. This whole unit needs to be dismantled and built up from scratch.

Russell just does not get it. He never will. Sorry Raiders fans, you guys really deserve much better than this pathetic bunch

oh, look, ANOTHER game that JokeMarcus can't average 10 yds per pass...
i'm still crying that the raiders didn't take cavin johnson instead of this clown...

Both picks suck. DHB is a project and Crabtree is a primadonna. Neither one is going to amount to anything in the NFL.

Reading the summary of the final drive is crazy. I guess they don't practice that 2 minute drill as much as they should.

I'm starting to think the Jacksonville PD deliberately ran Khalif Barnes' ass out of town. He's as bad (or worse) than that other check-casher, Erik Pears.

The funniest/saddest/sickest part of the game was when Murphy Morphed into 2 (yes, TWO) all pro CBs for SD. He knocked himself & JLH down on the final drive of the game & thus did a better job of "shutting down" 2 WRs than 2 probowl CBs could have. Both WRs were totally obliterated from the play & Russell had to take the sack.

Enough already with Murphy. BENCH HIM. Even he has enough tape to watch of himself to admit he's not ready to be a starter in the NFL. Why put Murphy & DHB on the field at the same time? Neither of them can catch.

You merely end up with a RT who can't even passblock long enough for the QB to overthrow his rookie WRs who can't catch anyways...even if the QB happens to hit them with the football by accident.

Plenty of rookie WR's play well every year...the problem is that the Raider rookies aren't any good.
Of course neither is their owner, coach, QB, etc.

Oh really? If the stats were reversed and DHB had those numbers his first two games you and half of Raider nation would be annointing DHB as the next coming of Jerry Rice.

Crabtree may indeed be a primadonna but so are many top WR's, see Ochocinco, TO, Housh and a few others. They all have one thing in common though with Crabtree vs DHB, they can actually catch the ball.

You may be right about DHB having a short NFL career, I hope for his sake he handles his signing bonus & other monies paid the Raiders wisely. It's not his fault he is just another in a long line of Raider first round picks to be (in his case he's still a potential) busts.
