Norv Turner addresses decision to cut Chris Chambers

The San Diego Chargers formally have announced the decision to cut receiver Chris Chambers.

"There are a number of things that went into the decision," coach Norv Turner said in a team-issued release.  "The reason we're able to do this is the play of Malcom [Floyd] and the way Legedu Naanee is performing.  Certainly there are a number of other things in terms of our football team that we need to address.  Defensively and in the kicking game . . . we need to get some help."

In other words, the Chargers opted to dump Chambers in order to create a roster spot that can be used to address other areas.

As we previously mentioned, any team that lands Chambers on waivers will be required to pick up the balance of his $4.55 million base salary.  If he clears waivers, he'll be entitled to collect the remaining $2.4 million as termination pay.  He would be permitted to keep that amount even if he signs with a new team as an unrestricted free agent.

I'd pick him up if I was playing Madden Franchise, in 2005.

Given that the team has been dealing with major injury issues since Week 1, the decision to cut a receiver to free up a roster spot is a sound one.

However, it should have been BUSTer Davis that was let go, not Chris Chambers.

Floyd has the best hands on the team. But he has also been injury prone. One on one he is hard to stop.

the patriots contact his agent yet? seriously, they need a 3rd receiver. chambers would fit just fine.

Chambers will end up with Cowboys, Patriots or Giants. I should say he will end up stealing more money from the Cowboys, Patriots or Giants.

    My money is Giants.

You couldn't find a way to blame this on Tony Romo ANYWHERE in your post? Amateur.

Honestly, I think the Panthers should give Chambers a shot. He could help the passing game a lot if he were able to fit into a slot type position for a lesser salary than he's gotten in SD and Miami. If the Panthers are going for the "win now" theme he would be at least worth a look bringing him in for a couple of practices.

IMO cut Jarrett and insert Chambers into the roster. I've defended Jarrett said keep Jarrett because this is his make it or break it year but he's still not producing and all he is, is a low salary 4th reciever at this point. He cant return kicks or punts and dosnt play special teams. Chambers is a bigger target and threat. It could be part of Delhomme/Carolinas resurgance

Maybe the Jets will pick him up?

This is the reason I have never criticized Favre.

The nanosecond you are no longer useful to your team you are cut usually without even a goodbye.

If Favre is considered valuable and successful enough to play and deal with a team(s) on his own terms more power to him.

The day will come soon enough when nobody want him. Until then let him do whatever he wants.

In other words, Chris is really hoping he clears waivers and THEN gets signed by another team.

I'd take him in Miami if we had the room, but we're all full up on mediocre talent. I wish you had never left buddy! Good luck!

    come back to Miami, Chris.

older player with a desire to still play + joey galloway cut = potential foxboro tryout

    @ electrogasm

what team in the NFL isn't dealing with injuries every week.

The Chargers are the sorriest group of talent ever amassed.

If they really want to address a big issue they should d
    fire Norv.

  18. Toad says: November 2, 2009 6:02 PM

Wow, Chambers has already earned $2.1M for what? BUSTer would have been cut if not for Chamber's big $$ salary.

  19. Toad says: November 2, 2009 6:05 PM

BUSTer Davis has been so invisible for the past few years, and especially this year, I actually forgot he was still on the roster.

I hope Chambers finds a home soon. He was pretty good as a Charger but played nowhere near his cash. I still think he has a couple years left, there was just too many problems the Chargers had in other areas. Maybe insiders know that LJ will be released and the Chargers are planning on making a run at him or there's another DL on the street that the Chargers worked out or to make room for another ST that the Chargers have in waiting.

Can you imagine Larry Johnson AND Merriman partying in the same SD downtown region?

You better be wrong Stuart Scott's Left Eye.

Really, though, the Chargers need to cut Norv Turner.

  24. Tinbender says: November 3, 2009 2:09 PM

He would be a good pick up for the Raiders, plus he could be a coach on the field. Lord knows they could use one.
