Scratch Holmgren off the Redskins' list

Many think that former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, who has made clear his desire to get back into the game next year, could land in some capacity with the Redskins.

Think again.

Holmgren, in a Monday appearance on Waddle & Silvy on ESPN Radio in Chicago, took issue with the Redskins' treatment of coach Jim Zorn, a former Holmgren assistant coach.

"I thought it was very unfair to put him in the position," Holmgren said, via NFL.com.  "The position they put Jim in, it shouldn't happen.  You can be upset with me as a play-caller or how the team's going, [then] fire me.  But don't do that.  Don't pull the rug out from under me, tie my hands, make me look foolish . . . take away what I came there for to do in the first place.  Don't do that."

So how much did it bother Holmgren?

"That bothered me a lot," Holmgren said.  "Jim Zorn is one of the nice people.  I'm a nice guy, but I'm not that nice.  Jim Zorn is really a nice man.  What they did, I did not like it at all."

So, basically, if the Redskins want Holmgren, they'll have to make a Donovan McNabb-style "financial apology."

Not to Zorn, but to Holmgren.

You're moving too fast today, Florio. Slow down, catch your breath and edit the title from "of" to "off".

    :)

So, what are we down to Shanahan, Coach Chin and Jeff Fisher? I think Shanahan may be the only one that can get passed the Slimy-Snyder effect. Unless it's a "no-name", which Slimy-Snyder can't risk doing, the new coach will require quite a premium just for the risk. As you've said before, why not drive to MD and hand Ozzie Newsome a blank check. $100M for fat Albert and $15-20m per year looks great for Ozzie and what he brings to the table.

    Good for Holmgren. That's beautiful.

I wish the Walrus would come back to Green Bay. We damn sure have had enough of McCarthy and his lousy coaching.

"I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well." -- Mike Holmgren

If I owned a little league team and the coach blamed a loss on the refs I would fire him.

    Here's an idea:

    1. Stop spending all your money on terrible players

    2. Get someone who knows about football so that you can draft someone that can actually contribute

    3. Let Jesus be your head coach because he is the only one that can get you out of last place in the NFC East

  8. VoxVeritas says: November 2, 2009 7:04 PM

Holmgren wouldn't be the first coach that criticized the way Snyder does things then went on to take a job with them.

  9. spyboots says: November 2, 2009 7:21 PM

I don't think Shanahan or Cowher either one would be interested in that job either.

I think(hope) that Holmgren has more class than to work for Snyder. Snyder is a bad imitation of Jerry Jones, who had the sense to getout of Johnson andlet him get a team on the field that can win. Then jerry got to cocky and thought hecould do it on his own...how many Super Bowl wins since Johnson's team broke up...don't count swisher, he got Johnson's team whle they where young...any way back on track..snyder is an idiot with money and as the comedian once said...YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!!!!

Lil Danny Snyder has the need to be involved in running the team, which, as the owner, is within his right. However, no reputable coach will go to Washington without 100% control over all aspects of the football operations, that means Vinnie, at the very least must go!

  12. slipkid says: November 2, 2009 7:56 PM

i think either might if they could pull a mangina and pick their own GM.

holmgren would be his own GM. and since snyder would consider that either...

I love the way Holmgren calls out Snyder, but he's not the guy for the Skins anyway. They need someone who tells Snyder "I run the show, sit back and shut up and let me do my job." I'm not sure who that person is, maybe bring Marty back, I don't know. One thing I do know is there is no easy fix to the mess Snyder and Cerrato have made out of once respected team. I've been a Skins fan for 40 years and I won't even go to games if I get free tickets. I love the team, hate the owner.

Holmgren is right on about this.

Zorn should have stood his ground. He's too nice.

  15. troll_aikman8 says: November 2, 2009 8:12 PM

That filthy crook Vinny is to blame for this mess just as much as lil Danny Snyder.

Vinny is an incompotent rat and he must have nude pics of lil Danny to have survived this long.

Snyder needs to bring Schottenheimer back and give him 5yrs and full GM power. In spite of horrible GM-ing, Marty almost had that team on track before he was cut loose.

Of course, I'm a Cowboys fan so I'm kind of enjoying this meltdown.

  16. Deadskinsfan says: November 2, 2009 9:38 PM

I think we could have scratched Holmgren's name off the list a while ago, along with Cowher's, Shanahan's and just about every other "big name" coach out there. The only exception may be Gruden, who reportedly became fed up with the Glazers' frugal ways and might be willing to put up with Little Danny because at least he's not afraid to max out his cap space (sure, Danny might trade five draft picks for an RFA punt returner, but he'll eventually learn from his mistakes, right?).

It's going to be every bit as difficult, if not more, for Snyder to find a suitable replacement for Zorn as it was to find one for Gibbs. Remember, Zorn wasn't his first choice. It was only after Steve Spagnuolo and Jim Schwartz decided they'd rather spend another year as assistants than take a head coaching job under Little Danny. They took jobs with two other crappy franchises, but I'd bet the farm they're both glad they didn't take the Redskins job.

  17. willmose says: November 2, 2009 10:42 PM

It makes no difference who is the Redskins coach, they will stink as long as Danny boy owns them. The fish rots from the head. It will take five years after Danny sells them to get back to .500. Hail to the Deadskins, to hail with victory. Outside of the Cowboy fans, this couldn't happen to a more deserving group of fans. Keep ponying up the big bucks for the seats while Danny laughes all the way to the bank.

"Jim Zorn is really a nice man" ... that is also what Zorn needs to change

  19. IMAREDSKINSFAN says: November 3, 2009 8:10 AM

Oh well...looks like Holmgren won't be coming to Washington. That leaves Gruden and Shanahan, and they probably won't put up the Danny's BS either. Look, until we FIRE VINNY, and DANNY picks a good GM, we are S.O.L !! Do you think that is going to happen anytime soon?....Nah,....wishful thinking. All I know is that during the Eagles game, when they were inducting Brian Mitchell into the Redskins Ring of Honor, when Brian tried to thank Daniel Snyder, everyone started booing. Also, a few people sitting next to me had on SNYDER SUCKS...CERRATO SWALLOWS Sweatshirts, and they were asked to leave the stadium. I wonder how this guy can't feel that nobody likes him.

  20. Quagmire says: November 3, 2009 9:34 AM

He's such a bad owner he won't be able to get anyone decent without overpaying...a lot.
    He'll have a hard time getting 2nd & 3rd tier guys.

But he could probably get one of these guys to take his abuse:
    Dave Campo
    Herman Edwards
Mangini (he should be available after this season)
    Cable (see above)

  21. dcfan-1212450 says: November 3, 2009 9:46 AM

You guys do know that Danny Snyder has been in contact with Shanahan a lot already this season. How can you scratch him off the list if he gets what he wants, which is full GM control. And he will, if the skins finish with less than 6 wins, and they will, Shanahan will be our coach. Snyder is a business man but also a huge Skins fan. He does care how the team does and may have finally realized that he MUST get a proven head coach next year. And with that he knows he has to give up power and Cerrato. He did it once before with Shottenheimer. And why did he fire Marty and rehire Cerrato, because he is too much a fan. His favorite players, his idols complained. Namely Daryl Green and especially Bruce Smith. If Marty stayed with the skins, these players would not have finished their careers here and we would have been a good team. Thats what Dannys needs to understand and may finally have. He can't win without making sacrifices. And i think he finally will. Cerrato, Zorn, and Campbell gone. In comes Shanahan and a new QB, hopefully Mccoy!!!

  22. Florio'sahotdog says: November 3, 2009 4:14 PM

I don't care what any body says. When Danny Boy gets out his checkbook and starts writing down seven figures and 100 percent control, all these guys who are making comments on the radio will come running like there's no tomorrow. That includes Holmgren,Cowher, Shanahan, and any other big time name.

  23. dfowlerj says: November 6, 2009 3:26 PM

The only way anybody will get full control is when he fires that TROLL Vinny! But Danny Boy wont do that, he likes the way Vinny holds his nuts
