Last year, Saints quarterback Drew Brees came within 15 yards of Dan Marino's single-season passing yardage record.
For the year, Brees racked up 5,069 yards. Marino's 25-year-old mark is 5,084.
This year, the record again could be in jeopardy. But not from Brees, who is on pace for "only" 4,585 yards.
Colts quarterback Peyton Manning currently is on track to put up 5,090 passing yards, based on his performance in the first seven games.
Manning currently is averaging 318 passing yards per game, based on 2,227 total passing yards in seven games.
Through seven games in 2008, Brees had 2,224 passing yards, three fewer than Manning's current total.
In all, ten quarterbacks are on pace to throw for 4,000 or more yards this season, which would also be a record: Manning, Ben Roethlisberger (on pace for 4,713), Matt Schaub (4,684), Philip Rivers (4,654), Tom Brady (4,645), Brees, Aaron Rodgers (4,546), Kurt Warner (4,375), Tony Romo (4,361), Joe Flacco (4,226).
Marino's single-season yardage record in jeopardy, again

If you count the yards on interception returns, Delhomme would likely qualify as well ...
Dan Marino is a pompous egotistical prick who only cares about himself and his slimfast diet.
If he had a ring he wouldnt care about his records.
Oh Dan what a hollow life you live
I can't believe that nobody and I mean NOBODY has brought up the fact that the Colts and Saints have maybe the 2 easiest schedules I have ever seen this year EVER. Its a joke. The Saints play only 2 teams that will finish with winning records this year. I mean T.B. and Carolina are in their devision with a combines 1-14 record. They only play 2 teams with winning recoeds this year. Patriots and Giants and maybe Falcons. Same with the colts. Here is a list of the teams the Colts have plated week: 1) Jacksonville 2)Dolphins 3)Cardinals 4)Seahawks 5)Titans 6)Rams 7)49rs. I challenge anyone to say the Colts are a top 3 team playing winless teams week in and week out.
We hear sooo much about the "Tom Brady" rule about protecting the QB's How about the "PAYton Manning" rule. His poor receivers were getting jostled in their route running in the playoffs against the Patriots. Even though it is a football game, lets have our GM, who is on the rules committee, pussify the game and lets get everyone out of the way for our recievers.
Bill Polian never thought, (maybe he did) that this change would give teams with good QB's such an advantage over teams without a decent QB.
Is this the main reason that there is such a competitive discrepancy in the league today.
QB's drive the league. Lets turn the receivers back into football players.
So you suggest we judge teams based on their strength of schedule, not how many games they've won?
novel approach genius!
Both teams have played the teams the NFL asked them to play... and beaten them all to this point.
That makes them the top 2 teams in the league currently.
It's a simple math thing really.
P.S. I didn't notice anyone crying about how easy the Patriots had it when they went 16-0... their schedule was pretty easy most of the way too. In fact every team they played the beat so they couldn't have been very good teams right?
How some of you get on the internet is beyond me,

I believe Favre is in that group.
They are still NFL teams that that are being beat and as you know on "Any given Sunday". Just ask the Eagles about how good teams automatically win against bad ones (Oakland anyone).
Very few people know how easy the Patriots schedule was when they went 16-0 and almost no one realizes the undefeated Dolphins had one of the eaiest schedules in the history of the league.
The point is, the good teams should have won and they did. The fact that they did it everytime makes them special.
WHAT?!?! Derek Anderson isn't on this list?????
Bree's and Manning are both excellent and have the dome for half their games minimum. big advantage. they could do it. how many of the away games are domed for each or will be mild climate away games could determine the answer to the great poohbah's (florio) question.
@ J
Put yourself down...you shouldn't be smokin that stuff this early in the morning. Oh wait, I forgot about the Wake & Bake. Never mind. Please use spell check next time. What about Philadelphia(who is leading their division), the Cowboys. Also, who started the Giants on their current losing streak. Don't forget the Dolphins, The Patriots and the J-E-T-S. Except for the J-E-T-S, all playoff teams from last year. Keep on hatin, your claim is baseless and the Saints are UNDEFEATED.
Strength of schedule does matter. It means you should take the Colts and Peytons stats with a grain of salt. I mean its not hard to throw up big nubers against 1-7 teams. Peyton didn't look so hot this week when he played his toughest team yet the 49rs. (who are not a very good team) Imagine if Peyton and the Colts had to play an NFL team? lol

Favre's on pace for 3850.
J,
"The Saints play only 2 teams that will finish with winning records this year."
Are you going to share what you're using?
You're saying the Eagles & the Cowboys both will finish at 8-8 or below?
Agreed that the Saints have a very easy schedule, due mostly to the fact that they have two sucky teams in their division. I don't know if that is actually an advantage come playoffs tho. It does help them get home field, but they also won't be used to playing hard fought games either. Atlanta didn't win, but they certainly took it to them last night for example.
J,
He had 350 yards this week. Can't wait til he does "look hot"
He also had 350 yards with his #1 WR slowed by a hamstring injury and no threat of a running game to keep the 49'er d honest.
Step away from the computer you are too stupid to use it properly.
Devils Advocate,
Lucas Oil has had the roof open every game so far this season.
I realize it's not a total open air but with the roof and window there are winds to consider.
Sunday it was VERY windy inside and swirling on one end of the field.
So it's not quite as pristine a passing environment as the RCA Dome or the Katrina Dome.
Brees won't get there because his team is too balanced and talented all across the offense. Unless Thomas AND Bell get hurt, Brees will "only" have a great season, not a record-setting one.
Manning probably won't either because he'll be sitting out the final game of the year and maybe even the final two.
Brees could have easily ad the record last year. Last game of the season Saints are down 33-31 and have the ball with no shot to make the playoffs at 8-7 going in.
Last play of the game Saints send all receivers to the goal line and one stays underneath 15 yards down field, no one around him.
Brees could of made the short pass and gotten the record but he lobbed up a hail mary for a shot at winning the game, it would have broken the record as well, but hail marys hardly ever work.
Plenty of people could have jumped on him and said he was only after the record, but chances of winning were slim anyways.
He was asked about it after the game and kinda shrugged it off. Said something along the lines of personal accomplishments are meaningless when you lose, etc. Just made me a Brees fan, not a Saints fan, but gives me someone to root for when my team is not doing great.
Also look forward to him kicking the sh*t out of the Viqueens, just like he did to the Giants and Eagurls.
When the Patriots went 16-0 their schedule was far from easy. Their schedule last year was easy, which allowed them to go 11-5 without Brady. But the 16-0 season, the AFC East was down, so that obviously helped. But the Patriots beat the AFC West winner, San Diego (38-14), beat the AFC North winner in the Steelers (34-13), and beat the AFC South winner the Colts in Indy (24-20). The Patriots also played the NFC East that year, which produced 3 playoff teams - The Patriots beat 13-3 Dallas in Dallas (48-27), beat eventual champ NY Giants in NY (38-35), and beat the Redskins who made the playoffs (52-7), plus beat the Eagles. With the exception of the Packers, the Patriots in 2007, basically played and defeated the top teams from around the NFL to get to 16-0.

How do you know that NE had an easy schedule? Because they went 16-0? Did you check their strength of schedule? The Patriots had the NFL’s second-toughest strength of schedule heading into the 2007 season, and all they did was go 16-0.
You don't know WTF you are talking about. How you got on the Internet is beyond me.
I'm a die hard PATS fan but I have to say the Saints are for real. They take care of business all over the field. All they have to do is stay healthy and who knows... I do think the PATS / Saints game will be a good one but we'll see how NE does over the next 4 weeks. One game at a time!
GO PATS!
@ SMACKMYVICKUP
Actually, Lance Moore was supposed to break off of the Hail Mary route at 15 yards and didn't. Brees threw the pass short & noone was there to catch it. If Lance Moore does what he was supposed to Brees would have had the record.
J
Imagine if Peyton and the Colts had to play an NFL team? lol
so the colts aren't good, nor the saints or 49ers? 2 undefeated teams and san fran is NFC best rushing D. colts beat 2 playoff teams from last year in primetime games on the road by MORE THAN 20. saints r the greatest show on turf with a defense that scores almost every game. Ur a donk and should be banned from posting.
Anyway as the colts start to lock up division manning wont put up as many yards....Brees has so many weapons and uses them better than anyone...he had 2 lackluster games early but is about to eat up his "easy" schedule...my money is on him breaking the record
Sir Manning will slow down. He's got some tough games coming up. Teams like Baltimore, New England, Denver and even the Jests have pretty good pass defenses and will probably make it difficult to reach that mark.
@ J,
you are right, they've plated every one of 'em
German Packer--I don't think Favre's going to need 5000 yards (sigh).

jesus man, put the pipe down. this isn't about marino, but two great QB's that could possibly break the record. (what did marino say that made you say that?)
I don't think anyone outside of the two QB's trying to break the record care about that much anyway. Most records will eventually be broken, it's inevitable. Manning & Brees are two great QB's. Good luck to both of them.
oh and to those talking about strength of schedule and wind and whatnot - keep in mind the record books don't care about circumstances.
all they see are the final numbers.
is strahan not credited with 22.5 sacks that year? of course he is. record books don't mention the circumstances of that last sack....
just as they won't mention circumstances of how these records were set/broken.
i just enjoy watching gunslingers like manning & brees play. fun to watch pass-heavy offenses.
ADX, put down that crack pipe … the Patriots schedule in 2007 consisted of wins against such “easy” teams as (in order): Chargers, Bengals, Cowboys, Dolphins, Redskins, Colts, Eagles, Ravens, Steelers, ‘Fins again, and oh yes, a schedule ending meet with the soon to be Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.
Real easy schedule, wasn’t it? And to think that they smashed all sorts of offensive records against such “easy” teams as these.
You are below even “moron” status as a poster here.
@ Massappeal
"Lets turn the receivers back into football players."
Hines Ward would agree.
@Massappeal
No rules were changed because of the Patriot DBs playing dirty football. The rules already on the books were simply enforced more strictly.
Be grateful they waited a couple years to bother enforcing that rule. The Pats' trophy case would be damn near empty otherwise. No chance in hell would they have beaten the Colts, or the Raiders the year before, without the refs swallowing their whistles in the face of blatant pass interference and defensive holding.
But, hey. Don't let the rule book interfere with your argument.

You are a fuking moron. anyone can make statistics work in their favour. of course the Colts look like they have an easy schedule. The strength of their schedule is based on last years win-loss record going into this season.
strength of schedule is relative. going into the season the colts had a tough schedule. titans x 2 (13-3), Cardinals (9-7), dolphins (11-5), ravens (11-5), patriots (11-5), texans x 2( 8-8), broncos (8-8). Thats nine of 16 games against teams with a .500 record or better. Not an easy schedule by any means. see how i just used win-loss record to make it seem like they have a tough schedule..... MORON!!!!!!!

Patriots .387 - 32nd out of 32 teams for final 2007 Strength of Schedule.
RichMoron and his lame 2nd toughest SOS claim certainly didn't end up holding up once the season progressed. So much for his deceptive post. Typical of pathetic Patriots fan losers like him.

Lemme guess? Typical jealous Pats fan commenting here.
CornFlorio, did you ever stop and think that maybe the reason why the Patriots had such a weak SOS when they went 16-0 was because they didn't have to play that 16-0 team while everyone else did? You come off as kind of a nitwit, but even you should recognize that.
Think about it, moron. The Patriots play a 1-15 team twice, that's 2-30 total. The Dolphins play a 16-0 team twice, that's 32-0 total. You don't think those 30 MORE wins come into play on a SOS?
Take the Patriots off the Dolphins SOS, and the Dolphins off the Patriots, and the Patriots end up with a harder schedule.
Their division was terrible, sure, but the Patriots had 8 wins against playoff opponents, and also beat the 10-6 Browns, and the Eagles who despite their record are never an easy out.
They beat as many NFC playoff teams as possible in the regular season (3). Including the 13-3 Cowboys by 21 points on the road. They also beat the 13-3 Colts on the road, the 3 seed Chargers, the 4 seed Steelers, and the 5 seed Jaguars in the playoffs.
Use what little brains you have before you comment, CornFlorio.
@ Doctor(in his dreams) Connors -
YOU think about it, MORON, applying YOUR "formula" to EVERY team, it is basically a WASH and the Pats STILL would end up in the lower quadrant of the Strength of Schedule percentage chart. BOTTOM LINE is that the numbers don't lie. And most importantly, in the end, their overall record was EIGHTEEN AND D'OH!!!! YOU LOSE, fool. LMFAO!
