Seahawks part ways with Edgerrin James

A league source tells us that the Seattle Seahawks have released running back Edgerrin James.

James, an 11-year veteran, spent seven years with the Colts before signing with the Cardinals as a free agent in 2006.  He asked to be released after losing his starting job during the 2008 season, but the Cardinals kept him around.  Ultimately, he was re-installed as the starter for the team’s inspiring playoff run.

The Cardinals continued to squat on his rights through the draft, during which they picked Ohio State running back Beanie Wells with the 31st selection in round one.

James drew mild interest before landing in Seattle during the latter portion of August.  He rushed for 125 yards on 46 carries, an average of only 2.7 yards per attempt.

Still, his performance was sufficient to pass Marcus Allen on the all-time rushing list.  Currently, James is at No. 10, 33 yards behind Marshall Faulk.

Since the trading deadline has passed, James will be required to pass through waivers.  He has a base salary of $1 million.  If unclaimed, he’ll be entitled to collect the balance of base pay ($529,000) as termination pay.

It remains to be seen whether James, a very strong candidate for induction into the Hall of Fame, lands with another team this year.

James will be in New England no later than Thursday.

Pats should pick him up to fill in until Sammy Morris is healed up. Seattle’s line is nowhere near as good as it was a few years ago. Running behind a good Oline and he’ll do better.

he was always pretty good at pass protection… the packers should dump ahman green and pickup edge strictly for pass pro.

I could see him filling in at New England for a bit

There comes a point with a running back when the saying goes, “is there any tread left on the tires?”. With Edgerrin James the answer is……..the tires are bald.
Very interesting comparison with a player who will always be linked with Edgerrin James (12,246 yards), that being Ricky Williams (8,194 yards). Williams is having a very good year with Miami and has 423 yards rushing with 5.4 yard per carry average through seven games. I think Ricky has an outside chance (maybe 10%) to stay in the league and play long enough to get in position to pass Edgerrin James in career yardage. With that run against the Saints for 68 yards, I have no doubt that there is a lot of rubber left on Ricky’s tires, so long as he doesn’t smoke them up before he is done. He has a very good chance at 10,000 career yards, the next 2,000 would be tough.

Why is it every time a grissled vet gets released, I think the Patriots might pick him up?
Why would Edge want to play in NE? It’s not like he’ll get a shot at the Colts or anything.
    Oh, wait…..

ricky isnt going to catch edge.
but ricky wont look like a joke when he hangs them up, either.

Seattle needs a QB and a headcoach! Mora Jr is just as bad as Mora Sr! Detroit better pick up Edge real fast to pick his brain. NFL is no place for old runningbacks!

  17. WHO DEYvid says: Nov 3, 2009 9:19 PM

I wonder if he couldn’t be a valuable asset back in Indy?

  18. Pantherfan10 says: Nov 3, 2009 10:43 PM

Whoever said he shoudl go for to the Packers for pass protection is actually a good idea. Edge is actually really good with his pass blocking

  19. stanjam says: Nov 3, 2009 11:07 PM

Good pass protection, and might actually have some running left in him if he is on a committee. The patriots just had two running backs in, taking a look at them, and they are currently down two backs. I think you might just see him in NE, at least so they can take a look at him. Running back is a bit thin and they can always use someone to help protect Brady. More time standing in the pocket means more time for Moss and Tate to get down field.
Hey Florio, do you think you could at least tell us if there are any plans to look at the stupid log in errors we all get every day or two? It is a royal pain to be logged in, comment, only to be told there was an error, and have to log out, then back in, to post. It is sloppy.

EASY SOLUTION FOR LOG IN/OUT PROBLEM:
    1) When you see “Comment Submission Error” after you hit the Submit button, hit the back arrow once to return to your comment. It will still be there.
    2) Open up another window of your web browser. Go to PFT and log in at this other location.
    3) Go back to the other window with your comment, and hit Submit again. The comment will now go through. This whole process takes less than a minute.

Mora Jr. just might run the Seahawks into the ground.
RB J. Jones sucks BIG TIME!
Devin Moore is super fast and is the BEST RB on the Seattle Seahawks as it stands right now.
    Doush can’t make plays!
Mora jr. MUST draft O-line first and foremost next year or this team will regress.

    Ugh, Dan Snyder’s new aquisition

  23. texasPHINSfan says: Nov 4, 2009 12:00 PM

yes, seahawks, edgerrin was the reason you are struggling right now. good thing you cut him. it wasn’t your o-line, your defense, or anything else – it was your backup running back. yes, THAT was the problem.
this actually might a blessing in disguise for edge – he might get picked up by a team like the pats where he’ll be properly used. i’m kind of rooting for him to add some yards to move up higher on the all-time list. good for him!

thanks, but my comment isn’t still there when i hit the back button, which makes it so frustrating. i just copy/paste every time i post now to avoid losing my content. when i hit the back button, the comment box is not repopulated with my comment. :(

I was bummed when the cards released him. He’s a good dude and a hard worker. Then he loses his longtime girlfriend to leukemia? Lost my 34 yo little sister to that 2 years ago. Hard to deal with.
I want this guy to catch on somewhere. I can see why Seattle should release him now, but hopefully he catches on somewhere. If nothing else, check him out in blitz protection situations. He’s VERY good at it.
