Mangini says he'll have input in next G.M.

By all appearances, Browns coach Eric Mangini hand picked the team's last General Manager, George Kokinis.

Despite a widespread belief that the next General Manager will be someone who'll have full authority over Mangini -- and whose first order of business might be to fire Mangini -- the coach claims that he expects to have input in the decision.

"Yeah, [owner] Randy Lerner and I talk a lot, so I'm sure we'll be very engaged in that [decision],'' Mangini said Wednesday.

"[W]e're just going through the process, so I'm not sure how that will all play out.  We have to really see what's there, see what's available."

If Mangini hopes to have someone who'll accept a position of subservience, the obvious choice would be V.P. of football operations Dawn Aponte, who essentially is acting as the de facto G.M. in the absence of one.  Such a move would help Mangini score major style points for hiring the first female General Manager in NFL history.  It also might help to soften Mangini's reputation for being a butthole, even if he ultimately picks a woman in part because he thinks she'll be more likely to defer to a man.

Still, we can't imagine Lerner again deferring to Mangini.  Regardless of whether Kokinis did something that constituted "cause" to justify his termination without a buyout, Mangini is responsible for picking Kokinis.  So the hiring of Kokinis can be regarded as a failure -- and Mangini bears the bulk of the blame for it.

What he "expects" and what he gets are two completely different things.......

  2. HarrisonHits says: November 4, 2009 4:59 PM

Hopefully Lerner will take Ratgini's "input" and do exactly the opposite of what he recommends.

  3. danlinker says: November 4, 2009 5:00 PM

No he won't, that's just the front office covering Mangini.

  4. mike428 says: November 4, 2009 5:06 PM

Rather presumptuous of Mangini to assume that he would even be around after the season to give his "input".

    Vinnie Cerrato, anyone?

With whom, exactly? You, Florio? Big deal.

What legitimate GM candidate would bow down to this back stabbing little punk? If Lerner had a pair, he'd fire Mangini!

  7. nfcbeast says: November 4, 2009 5:18 PM

The best thing to do with the Browns is just hit the RESET button on their entire staph, oops i mean staff.

  8. Ammo says: November 4, 2009 5:28 PM

Romeo Crennel also said Brady Quinn would be the starting QB of the Browns in 2009.

Mangini is done. Bernie's doing a lot behind the scenes right now.

  9. Mot Ydarb says: November 4, 2009 5:35 PM

OMG - Mangini is stupider than I thought. Fire his facking ass...

  10. JustinG says: November 4, 2009 5:46 PM

Why would Mangini have any input at all? He has proven to be a worthless headcoach. He's traded all the talent on that team, and moreover, he alienates his players and his fanbase. The Browns should just get rid of the guy. He's a joke. Hell, I know that and I'm not even a Browns fan.

  11. GoBrowns19 says: November 4, 2009 5:51 PM

I've watched every Mangini presser since he was hired, and that's what his "sidestep" answer is. The 'Me and randy talk about everything' answer. The word around here is that Lerner and his consultants are going to have the only input. There's been alot of reputable local tv and radio guys that says Mango is good as gone after the season.

  12. Asswipe Johnson (Pronounced Az-Wee-Pay) says: November 4, 2009 5:58 PM

It's time for Randy Lerner to make amends to Ron Wolf...

One can only imagine the type of talent that could be rostered with all those recent future draft picks Cleveland has been acquiring. When you have an NFL legend like Ron Wolf pulling the trigger.

Mr Lerner, pick up that phone and make the offering for the sake of your franchise.

LOLZ This guy is a cut up. My favorite bit of his was when he did the Chippendale's skit with Patrick Swayze.

It wont be too much longer before this knucklehead is "LIVING IN A VAN....Down by the RIVER."

  16. spyboots says: November 4, 2009 6:14 PM

"a woman in part because he thinks she'll be more likely to defer to a man."

    That's not nice!

  17. Ralph Gre Nader says: November 4, 2009 6:16 PM

Do you think when Kosar passes out drunk they're going to wheel him around like Richard and Larry did to Bernie Lomax in "Weekend at Bernie's?"

He'd probably still do a better job drunk than Kock-in-us did.

    Steeler fans say......hahahahahahahhahhahhhahah

I keep saying ever week "They can't get any worse" and you know they prove me wrong every week.

The only input Mangini will have is deciding which exit he will take out of Berea!

  19. wrath4771 says: November 4, 2009 6:48 PM

Mangini's input should go as far as, "I like this guy" and then Lerner responding, "Well, that guy won't be hired."

  20. bearsrule says: November 4, 2009 6:48 PM

If Mangini's involved in the process, no candidate with half a brain would be interested in taking that job.

  21. slipkid says: November 4, 2009 7:01 PM

better yet, wrath, lerner would say...

"that's interesting, eric. we'll discuss that later."

and then, bernie will motion to a rather large man to taker eric out the door to lerner's office.

it is now 'later' and the real discussions will occur.

and "we" will not include mangina.

  22. alewatcher says: November 4, 2009 7:06 PM

Yeah, like Mangini is actually going to be around after the season.

    -------------------------------------------------

Ah, ya gotta love classy Squealer fans.

Newsflash for "Pig Don": With what's going on in the Browns organization right now, a Steelers fan posting "ha ha ha" on a message board is about the equivalent of a bratty 8 year old coming up to a person who's watching their house go up in a 4 alarm fire, and going "Ha ha, the mail in your mailbox got soot on it!"

In other words, no Browns fan really gives a crap right now what Pissburgh fans think because there are much bigger fish to fry (pun intended) than some pipsqueak doofus making a lame attempt at trash talking. I assure you that about ZERO Browns fans are even *thinking* about the Steelers right now.

When the Browns have front office people who aren't lame ducks, a coach who doesn't alienate his players, and players that can play above a high school level- THEN you can trash talk and have it mean something. In the meantime, a Steelers fan gloating about how horrible the Browns are is like a Ferrari driver jumping up and down with glee over just having won a 1/4-miler over a Yugo.

Shouldn't you be concentrating your vitriol on the Bengals fans or something?

  24. johnnydom says: November 4, 2009 7:11 PM

and if you believe the part about I'll have input with the GM decision, you are dumber then the guy that recommended Kokinis in the first place.... Oh wait a second scratch that last statement.
I like the idea of calling Ron Wolf assuming he will even take the call after what that idiot Davis did to him.
Please tell me out there that someday this organization will be as organized as the Steelers, as much as it pains me to say it they are well run and organized.

Maybe the only way the ball boy can hang in the league.

  26. daffy87 says: November 4, 2009 7:27 PM

Eventually the Browns are going to learn that just yanking some jerk from the Ravens front office doesn't mean he's going to be a good GM. Phil Savage came highly reguarded from the Ravens and he stunk, there's a reason there weren't any teams knocking on his door to hire him after he was fired from the Browns. Now Kokinis is the next Ravens reject to get canned. Hire someone NOT affiliated with the Ravens. Ozzie Newsome does the picking there and he does a great job...just beacause some jagoff is his assistant for a few years doesn't mean they're worth a crap.

  27. Irish Billy says: November 4, 2009 7:45 PM

Irish Billy . . . There are many articles on the web that don't even draw a blog. but just mention "Mangini" and look at the response. I agree with JustinG and I'm not a Browns fan either! There's going to be an opening in Oakland soon. Let's ship Mangini out to Al Davis. They deserve eachother!

    @Gobrowns19

What consultants? That's rich. It surely means they must still rerun old 3 Stooges shorts on cable wherever Randy "Slow" Lerner is ... or maybe he received an all hallow's eve visit from the ghost of owners past in good ol' Art ####?

Art #### (4-letter word) once had the great Paul Brown himself escorted from the building in disgrace if you recall your pre-expansion history.

  29. Inge Hammarström III says: November 4, 2009 9:03 PM

How is that Mangini, a coach, is repeatedly allowed to hire his boss? Something is rotten in the city of Cleveland.

  30. JohnC says: November 4, 2009 9:29 PM

That has got to be the funniest thing I've heard from the Browns all week.

BTW, I've been listening to all his press conferences. I wonder if he gets paid extra everytime he says 'process'.

  31. ClevelandJets says: November 4, 2009 9:30 PM

    What did anyone expect?

Why would anyone trust Lerner's next hire to run the organization, the 3rd choice in 51/2 years?

Lerner isn't in the building. Mangini saw a leadership vacuum and did what all thin skinned people do that lack competent skills... he puckered up and made it his kingdom.

Savage wasn't the right hire so Randy goes right back to the same pedigree and hires Kokinis the Pro Player Director of the Ravens with no experience in running a draft, negotiating contracts or hiring/firing staff.

I'm one Browns fan that has had it and am divorcing myself of this situation until he sells the team.

  32. Richm2256 says: November 4, 2009 9:40 PM

The man (Mangini) is delusional, the most ego driven coach in a league full of egomaniacs.

    He actually BELIEVES this crap?

  33. Browns_fan_in_therapy says: November 4, 2009 9:42 PM

What a great idea. Give Mangini input on the person who is going to fire him at the end of this season. Brilliant!

  34. DEALMAN says: November 4, 2009 9:49 PM

Lerner, Mangini and Crennel have created more Bengal fans in Ohio than any cheerleader from Cincy ever could.

What do ALL the great NFL franchises, year after year, have in common? None of those guys!

    Can you spell INCOMPETENT?

  35. mwilk says: November 4, 2009 9:57 PM

  36. Dinger says: November 4, 2009 10:05 PM

Dawn Aponte? Pattitude thanks for the link giving us a visual, but to call her "kinda hot?" That's like calling Mangoo kinda fat. Puleeeeeeez.

  37. GoBears84 says: November 4, 2009 10:07 PM

trick bunny has a great point...you guys need a WR coach sooo bad.. shitsburgh is so nice they cant even beat chicago. better get AAA because the steelers bandwagon is sure to snap an axle or something....this guys probably a TRUE FAN since '06. I cant stand steelers fans. almost as much as the patriots. if yoru from pitt, or from boston, then do your thing, but all these "true fans" since the teams last great season is a joke...

  38. ImJustSaying says: November 4, 2009 10:46 PM

"Hello.....McFly....Helloo....is there anyone in there? McFly? McFly?"

Ok...its official, Man-Gina is so pleased with himself and his efforts that he self inserts himself into a position of authority and feels he is qualified to be at the decision table.

Man, I guess if I was called "Mangenius" and was on the Sopranos I might have an inflated ego too.

Word of wisdom...start eating humble pie. You won't last another season as Browns head coach. If by some chance you do Man-Gina, the NFL should take the frachise to LA and leave Cleveland without a team once again.

  39. songbre says: November 4, 2009 11:46 PM

Mangini needs to go ... QUICKLY
I'm not even a Browns fan, and I feel 4 them ... This dude sucks as a coach, mentor and seemingly a human being !!!
If the Browns have ANY hope of a future, it dam sure ain't gonna be with Mangini around !!!

  40. SmackMyVickUp says: November 4, 2009 11:50 PM

I'm sure I can offer input for the next GM as well, doesn't mean anyone cares. Just keeping Mangina under control until they get far enough outside town to safely dump him without causing a scene.

  41. JFowler says: November 5, 2009 12:42 AM

This is similar to the bizarre statement Crennel made when he named Brady Quinn the starter for this season. Seemingly the only person on earth not to understand he was on the chopping block.

  42. whatev says: November 5, 2009 1:04 AM

Trickbunny, browns fans like you make it easier for Steeler Fans to harass you guys. Why bit on what he says, truth his your team does suck & it is on par or below with the Raiders The Bucs are winlees, Rams won for the 1st time in 17 games & the only thing most people talk about is how bad the Browns are, its not just Steeler fans it's everyone see this. Across the nation, Football fans think Manvagina is in way over his head & most fans across the nation would laugh at him if they came face to face with the fat sour grinch.

  45. Dawgpound2009 says: November 5, 2009 1:07 PM

The only input Penguini should havein the front is choosing what kind of paper they use in Berea to print his "notification of termination" on . Perhaps grocery bag brown would be the proper choice with pre cut eye holes so he can wear it on his way out of Cleveland
