Former Vikings pick Erasmus James arrested

The last we heard of former first-round Vikings pick Erasmus James, the defensive end was indefinitely suspended by the NFL.

After an arrest Thursday morning, consider James’ suspension, um, more indefinite.

James was arrested for punching a “friend” in the face.  Authorities say it happened after James tried to order a drink after closing time at a bar near the University of Wisconsin, where James went to college.

If James was a senior without a budding NFL career, this could make for a funny story.  When you are That Guy still reliving college glory while your NFL career is on life support, it’s a little sad.

James was last with the Redskins, who cut him after acquiring him via trade from the Vikings.  This incident may finish James’ chances of getting back in the league if that indefinite suspension ever finds an end.

Please please please don’t ever give us any more details on this story.
I want to always imagine that he ordered the drink, the bartender said “No” and he turned and punched his friend in the face.

Ironically this guy wasn’t the Vikings worst pick in that years draft. We took Troy Williamson with the 7th overall pick that year. People can hate Childress all they want but at least he can draft. Unlike Tice who was a train wreck of a drafter.

UW and NFL player Erasmus James arrested after fight at Downtown bar –
Former University of Wisconsin and NFL football player Erasmus James was arrested early Thursday after a fight at a Downtown bar, Madison police said.
James, 27, who was a 2005 first-round draft choice of the Minnesota Vikings, was released Thursday from the Dane County Jail after his arrest on a tentative battery charge.
Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said James and a friend were at Wando’s, 602 University Ave., about 2:15 a.m. when James tried to order a drink. Told it was past bar time, DeSpain said, James complained to the bartender when his friend stepped in and told James to relax.
The two began to tussle, DeSpain said. The friend had James pinned to the floor, and when the friend got up, James punched him, leaving a cut below his eye.
James, a defensive end, played in 23 games for the Vikings through the 2007 season and five games for the Washington Redskins in 2008. In September the NFL suspended James indefinitely for undisclosed reasons.

There has to be a special wing of the Turd Watch Hall of Shame for the Vikings:
    Wizzinator,
public team orgy on a boat,
head coach lying and scalping tickets,
high speed chase from the police,
public sex in downtown parking ramp stariwells, stealing teammates cars,
players burning their own children’s ears with a lighter and holding a plastic bad over their childs head,
blocking downtown traffic with their vehicle so they can take time to do drugs on the street,
vandalizing the locker room after a road game loss,
fights among teammates throwing chairs (James involved in that one) or fights among teammates wherein the RB puts his FB out for the big game 2 days later,
beating a bouncer with a metal pole when asked to leave at 6 am,
    steroid masking,
    etc, etc, etc.
The viking team of turds is really unique.
The NFL Commisioner had to make a special trip to read the owners of the vikings the riot act and to get their franchise under control!!
James was a first round pick in 2005. I can think of no other team that rid of its entire draft class as fast as team of turds got rid of it’s 2005 draft class!
Nobody cheers for criminals and that is part of the reason the first home playoff game in many years gets only 61,000 fans (including those for the visiting team). Bringing in criminals from out of state does not make them a popular corporation in Minnesota.

Cory Rodgers, Packers 4th rd pick “Rodgers faces gun charges in brawl arrest”

    Ahman Green – Wife Beater
    Mark Chumura – Sexual Assualt
Also, there were more arrests when the Bills played at Lambeau in August, then when the Vikings just played there. I think this shows that this is just typical behavior for packer fans.
Also, how about this one. “Father arrested for taping Packers jersey to son”

What a class act this guy must be. Then again I expect nothing less from a packers fan.

“public team orgy on a boat”
It was a privately chartered boat – the “cruise” was not open to the public.
“high speed chase from the police”
I believe your beloved Packers signed that turd the following year.
    “stealing teammates cars”
That is a classic prank that happens with ALL teams.
“players burning their own children’s ears with a lighter and holding a plastic bad over their childs head”
You mean FORMER player – he was released before it happened.
“blocking downtown traffic with their vehicle so they can take time to do drugs on the street”
We may all know the Moss was high at the time, but there were no drug charges, were there, Bob?
“fights among teammates wherein the RB puts his FB out for the big game 2 days later”
Again, where is your proof that this was a fight?
    “steroid masking”
If the players involved were built like brick shit-houses, then you could say they may have been masking steroids. However, both players are very large men who were taking the substance to lose weight.
“The NFL Commisioner had to make a special trip to read the owners of the vikings the riot act and to get their franchise under control!!”

@footballrulz: I actually feel for you sane packer fans. But Bob Nelson and Jimmy Smith are more the norm than the exception, which is the challenge you face.
loved the symmetry of the first half in Sheepblow Stadium: the fans open the game with 80% of them booing favre by Ross Tucker’s count, then end the half booing the Packers off the field. BOB NELSON!
    What a man.
I especially like him harping on our 2005 draft, but neglects to mention the positively heinous first-round drafting of the pack in the years thereafter:
2006 – AJ Hawk…at number 5! He would’ve made a nice 4th round pick. Glad to say the Vikes picked up Greenway at 17.
2007 – Justin Harrell. Yup. Meanwhile, the Vikes pick up Adrian Peterson. Yup.
2008 – No 1st-rounder. Green Bay fans insist that Favre was garbage and good riddance, but leave out that the trade cost them a 1st-round pick…but hey, they still got Jordy Nelson in round 2! Minnesota had no 1st-rounder, but that’s because we used it to acquire Jared Allen. Packer fans know him. To the tune of 7.5 sacks in two games this year.
2009 – Raji starts strong…and…fades! No sacks, hardly a statistic recorded. Vikes draft Percy Harvin 13 picks later. Packer fans know him, too.
WHAT A TEAM OF TURDS WHO CAN’T DRAFT
Oh, and @launcher, you forgot to mention Johnny Jolly! If you need Oxy, Jolly got Oxy.

He’s a footnote to all except for Bobby Nelson, whom has spreadsheets on the number of flushes he used in 1994 while on vacation in Zimbabwe while assisting in the recolonization of the Green Tree Frog in the Sheraton Hotel Pool. That and the indiscretions of Vikings employees including speeding, breathing, eating at McDonald’s vs Wendy’s vs Burger King and squares of toilet paper used to wipe their glasses. The Bastards.
It takes Florio a nanosecond to decide on a nonstory like this becoming a PFT headline because he knows the usual suspects will emerge and prosecute/defend the title character; Mike gets paid for those site hits and may have a taste of the advertising revenue, too. Don’t think it has anything to do with the Packer fans, when their team isn’t any good( this year) never failing to remind us Viking fans about all those trophies they have in “titletown” do you?
Half of these jokers have no clue who Don Hutson, Blood McNally or any of the other Packer greats are.
I just wish the Vikes could have won 1 of thse bowls, it would have ended that nonsense long ago.

The Vikes have so many fans…….Why can’t they sellout playoff games til the last minute?…As i age i forget things at a quicker rate, but wasn’t this the case last year?,…..Don’t gimme this crap about the dome, the parking prices , concession prices etc……..Before it was imploded, you have never seen anything like the Vet….Just fair weather now suddenly Favre fans………admit it

Being a fan of this site former feature, Turd Watch, I really wish it would return.
Those of you new to the site, Turd Watch was a point system based on arrests and conviction for crimes. In the very first Turd Watch the vikings got out there an won the NFC (couldn’t win the big one).
For brevity the oldest item on my brief list above was the Wizzinator (May 2005). All of them have been mentioned on PFT. I mentioned how special the recent crimes by viking former players are unique and people get angry and insulting.
It is rather funny to be thought of as a Packer fan.
Nobody accued me of being a rival’s an when I listed the Michael Vick problems (flipping off paying customers, the Ron Mexico lawsuits for the spread of herpes, the Rolex and the “water” bottle problems at the airport) nor when I list Raider problems.
The story that a viking first round pick gets arrested and I point out that none of their 2005 draft class made it to 2008 except Marcus Johnson who is now a Buc. I just don’t recall such a failed draft class in the NFL.
Call me names but it does not change documentable facts.

Newsflash Florio, You’re an idiot as usual!

    Eskinsux: you sure do.
Just another in a long line of Packer fan idiots taking credit for the Packers sellouts.
I’m sure you are 1 of the 99% of the packer fan jerkoffs that doesn’t even go to the games, yet takes credit for it.
If you aren’t a season ticket holder, you need to STFU!
I guess you have 2 tacks to take, trophies and sell outs huh?
Anything to deflect from the fact that the Vikes swept you, and you are essesntially 3 games out huh?
At least you have trophies from 13, 41, and 42 years ago, right?
    Asshat!

“2009 – Raji starts strong…and…fades! No sacks, hardly a statistic recorded. Vikes draft Percy Harvin 13 picks later. Packer fans know him, too.”
You forgot Clay Matthews, moron. He is having a great rookie season.

WHAT A TEAM OF TURDS WHO CAN’T DRAFT
Oh, and @launcher, you forgot to mention Johnny Jolly! If you need Oxy, Jolly got Oxy.

I REALLY wish I could disagree with you, but you’re right. The Packers under Thompson can’t draft at all. They’ve picked about 5-6 decent players total, even despite repeatedly trading down for extra picks. That’s one or two a year, thanks Ted. Of course, they could compensate for that somewhat by trading or picking up FAs to fill gaping holes in the roster, but that just doesn’t seem to be an option.
However, you’re wrong about Jolly, and it’s a moot point because charges were dropped anyway. Jolly (allegedly) has the CODEINE, not the oxy. Bob Nelson has the oxy, and lots of it. It’s okay though, because he’s a Christian. He can do what he wants, unlike those amoral Vikings.

    Beer Cheese,
Thompson is a good GM. His job entails more then just players. What are you going to say IF this team wins it all in a couple years? IT TAKES TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bobby Bobby Bobby. What’s up, man! Another list of Viking failures. We all pretty much knew those things, though. This was a topic of discussion about 4 months ago when there was little to no news worth reporting on any football team, so the real reporters dug up this very point.
Yes, the 2005 Vikings draft class was an utter bust. Notice how the lack of any of those players has hurt the Minnesota Vikings in 2009? Notice that, if Stony Hands Williamson was worth a crap we wouldn’t have taken Sid (Astaire)Rice? There wouldn’t have been a trade for Jared Allen (one of the single best NFL trades in history, I might add). There would have been no need, as far as I can see, for Percy Harvin. Stony was to be a kick returner, too, Bobby. There would not, in all probability, (you stats scamp) looking at the RB position for the Vikings, recently vacated at that time by the single dumbest human ever to call himself SOD/Wizz, a need to draft an RB. Adrian Peterson would be playing in Cleveland with the bravest face in the league. And, in tradition of idiots around here making predictions about what positively will happen in the future, I will sarcastically say that Cleveland’s AP would have run up 180 yards on Green Bay and beaten them singlehandedly in 2009. And Brady Quinn would be starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings rather than in limbo/hell. There would be absolutely NO talk whatsoever about Brett Favre on this site unless he fell of the tractor into the swamp.
There you are, Bobby. I just served you a lob softball to hit out of the statistics park. I defy you to bring up the Herschel Walker trade.

That’s a very huge IF. Also, I think we’ve all seen exactly how much “time” it’s taken the Vikings to become competitive.. Good teams don’t need to promise great things in the near future, good teams win now.
I already agreed with you that Thompson is up on the financial aspect of the sport. He’s also fielded one winning team in five seasons. Great accountant, terrible GM.
I think I’ve figured it out now though. We’re just different types of fans. I’m more a fan of the GAME of football, I like my team to win. You are clearly a fan of the BUSINESS aspect of football, all the profits and contracts and other things where my knowledge is relatively limited, and you don’t care quite as much about actually winning games. That would explain why you love Thompson so much, the dude is a financial wizard. He maximizes profits, he lowballs and then cuts FA signings to save money, I think he even led the league in cap space twice.
I suppose neither one is wrong, I just don’t see your side of things as much. It’s hard for me to understand a fan being so willing to accept these humiliating losses. To each his own I suppose.
One other thing though, don’t you think more wins could equal more profits for the team by itself?

  73. Supersuckers says: Nov 9, 2009 8:58 AM

    Beer Cheese,
Ok we will agree to disagree. I run a small business so I tend to pay attention to those things more I guess. Wins DEFINITELY equal more revenue. Regarding Minnesota? This is the 4th year of that regime. This is the 4th year of the McCarthyregime. Clearly Childress is ahead. By three wins this year. I care about winning games but a guy like Thompson looks at the big picture. A team like Minnesota is one that is good today but three years down the road could very well cycle down to 4-12 like Sherman did to Green Bay. You will never see another 4-12 the way this packers team is built. You will see 8-8’s an occasional 6-10 but also 13-3’s 12-4’s. etc. So far this year is on McCarthy. We may see one OR MORE head coaches under Thompson. If he feels the Head Coach isnt getting the most out of the teams players he will pull the trigger. But remember these fellows have 3.5 years left. Green Bay isnt going to buy them both out. If the season gets away from us McCarthy would be the one to go.
