Andre Smith's status for Sunday uncertain

Bengals first-round pick Andre Smith is finally participating in full-scale NFL practices.  It’s uncertain, though, if he’ll be ready to play against Baltimore on Sunday.

Marvin Lewis said Smith “would have to be one of the best 45 guys” to suit up against Baltimore.  It’s possible Smith will be used in certain situations, like clear running plays.  Smith has only participated in five full practices since ending his holdout.

The Bengals are as healthy as they have been all season, but the PFT picks believe Ravens will find a way to split the season series.

And for everyone upset with Florio that he said Joe Flacco is a better quarterback in 2009 than Carson Palmer, direct your anger at me.  I love me some Carson Palmer and the sons of Hard Knocks, but Flacco has played at a higher and more consistent level.

Flacco can be the better QB, watching the playoffs at home while Carson and the Bengals are still playing this season.

There’s really no way to say who is the better QB until all the numbers are in. That’s why all these picks and projections and all that crap are useless fanboy banter that means exactly zilch (though I’m sure you’d disagree since you like collecting paychecks). Palmer outplayed Flacco last time and we’ll see if he can do it again on Sunday.

I really do not want to see Son of Flubber on the field…EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

the Bengals drafted Carson Palmer, Carson did not draft the Bengals
If Flacco had to play in Cincy…. I would argue that he would have sucked his rookie year like so many others in years past…. but Baltimore is a strong organization that can support a franchise player….. not a player supporting the entire hopes of a franchise like Carson does
quote Collinsworth … “Carson is Porsche going thru the Bengals carwash, but the Bengals organization doesn’t have any wax”
    ….thanks Showtime

Well…Mr. Florio is STILL a jerk!

Smith will play on Sunday. Marvin’s just being a coach, trying to keep Smith working.
When Andre hits the field, he’ll be the kind of road grading tackle Cincy hasn’t had since Munoz.

I’m a Bengals fan and don’t want to see Smith on the field. NO reason to mess up what’s working right now. Our line is playing solid. No reason to throw a kink in it now. Keep him off the field until at least after the Pitt game. Don’t throw him in during one of these two games.

Oh Rosenthal, so you’re the guy with his head up his behind, thinking a sophomore QB is better than Palmer. Way to clear Florio’s good name and journalistic integrity.

Uuuummm, Flacco has ONE FULL YEAR IN THE LEAGUE, hardly enough time to give him an edge over a veteran like Palmer, Christ, gimme a break Rosenthal. That’s like saying that Michael Crabtree is a better WR than Calvin Johnson.

    That’s easy. FAT!

oh yeah, just like last year, right?

Carson Palmer owns the Ravens. You can look it up.

Palmer is 7-3 against baltimore. Bungoles have their broom out to make 8-3 after this week.

I’m confused Rosenthal, did Flacco miss 10+ games last season with a career threatening injury? Did he miss the entire pre-season? Just curious.

Andre Smith on the field this week?
Maybe that explains why they can’t sell tickets to this game.

It’s funny. I’m a huge Carson Palmer fan, have and still expected great things. Love watching the Bengals.
This season, he’s been inconsistent for whatever reason until the Bears game. Line has played well.
Flacco is a borderline MVP candidate and it won’t be the last time. Palmer has been good, Flacco great. Baltimore’s three losses came to good teams on a missed kick, defensive penalties, and a dropped pass. I can’t kill Flacco for that. I think most coaches and GMs would take Flacco too – even just for 2009.
Love the comments – thanks for reading.

Carson is the most talented QB in the division by a chunk. He had a slow start but managed to get it done in the crunch. I’d like to see any other QB that missed most of last season and most of training camp start off crisper. as far as Chunky’s first game, he needs to dress and ease his way into playing time. hopefully he can play the fourth quarter while Cedric is going for another career high trying to kill the clock. although I wouldn’t mind seeing the Ravens cry about getting flagged at the end of the game again. “It’s not fair the ref throwing the flag right there. I’ve been holding him the entire game!!!!!”

I disagree with you a bit brother. I think they should ease him in starting with this game. I don’t think they’ll stick him in at right tackle, which could possibly upset the chemistry a bit. They’ll use him as a receiver eligible tackle in an unbalanced line like they have done with a few other guys.
And by the way Rosenthal, super cool of you to respond in the comment section. You made a statement, you can in the comments to give an explanation, big props brother. While I don’t necessarily agree with you, the fact that you came and defended it is cool in my book.

Palmer sustained a high ankle sprain early in the preseason that until lately has affected both his footwork and the stability of his base when throwing. The Bengals also have gone away from their customary in-game no-huddle attack except for appropriate times, which led to lots of higher perentage completion situations for Palmer. He’s also now playing with a defense that doesn’t basically try to hold the opposition to 1 less point than the Bengals would score, so he isn’t able to generate the same gaudy stats that he has in the past continually facing extensive prevent situations playing from behind, where he typically excels.

@steveinohio … you can’t be serious. While I think Carson has shown flashes of greatness in a few seasons, Rosenthal nailed it … he hasn’t been that consistent. This year is clearly a better year for the Bengals due to the emergence of Benson and a line that is healthier and playing together.
Flacco and Roethlisberger are tremendous talents, as I think Palmer can be. However, Carson is going to have to do it for more than a few games in one season to earn stud of the AFC north.
Who has more wins since entering the NFL as a starting QB than Palmer? Flacco or Roethlisberger? Just making a point that you need to bring facts not emotion.
