The Indianapolis Colts have received some very bad news about one of their most important players, as safety Bob Sanders will need elbow surgery and be sidelined indefinitely.
Sanders visited Dr. James Andrews this week, and Andrews confirmed that Sanders, the former NFL defensive player of the year, will need surgery.
"He's going to have to have something done,'' Colts coach Jim Caldwell said of Sanders. Caldwell said the team should know "within the next 24 hours" how long Sanders will be out.
Sanders is just one of three starters in the Colts' secondary who are injured. Starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden is expected to miss up to four weeks with a knee injury, and fellow cornerback Marlin Jackson has been placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL during a non-contact drill in practice on Wednesday.
And the Colts are hurting on offense, too: Caldwell said wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and isn't ready to return.
The good news for the Colts is that they're 7-0, and if they beat the Houston Texans on Sunday they'll have a commanding lead in the AFC South. But they'll be shorthanded heading into the second half of the season.

they could be in serious trouble when they face the patriots
Let the annual Colts collapse begin ...
Lame
Now this is a huge blow to us. Excellent player when he can play, though it's not too often lately. Jackson and Hagler being out for the year don't even compare to this. We do have Melvin Bullitt who's been playing solid and now a team captain but this just sucks. Get well soon Bobby, we need you for the playoffs. You got about 9 weeks to recover
Cue the "Brittle Bob" comments...
Dude, what is Sanders made out of, balsa wood?
It's amazing to me how you have guys like Brett Favre, Walter Payton and Jerry Rice who never get/got hurt, yet you have others like Sanders and John Offerdahl who are/were talented, young, and in their primes and just can't stop getting injured.
I think some bodies just aren't made for NFL football.
so how many games has sanders missed during his career?
If someone hasn't yet made a Photoshop of Bob Sanders as Samuel L. Jackson's "Mr. Glass" character in "Unbreakable"....it should be done.
Thats a hallmark of a good team. No matter about their injuries they keep winning not whining.
If it is my team (the Jags) the coach JDR will find excuses about the loss whether it is the QB who changed the play or its Mike Sims walker not following the curfue etc.
I have to take my hat off for the Indy Colts organization how they draft people and their pro-personal guy Bill Pollian. They are one great organization.
I think they will find ways to win the division. Winning the division was never their problem since they moved to AFC south.
I didn't think the Colts were for real with him, I guess we won't really know for sure. Shame that he won't be available for the Patriots game, always want to play opponants at the top of their game (unless you're a Steeler fan, of course).
God forbid the Colts lose and we have to listen to their incessant bitching some more.
Injuries suuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Thats 3 starters they've lost on D.
Is Bob Sanders an actual player in the NFL??? I mean every time I see his name mentioned, it's next to an article about him being injured and unable to play in that week's game. For years...... I vaguely remember seeing a safety for the Colts in a game like maybe once last year that could be him, but maybe it was just my imagination. Rumor has it he's a pretty good safety, but he'd actually have to be on the field once in a while for anyone to be able to tell.
This guys missed more games than he's played. TIME TO RETIRE MAN. HANG UP THE CLEATS.
Quick, re-sign Mike Doss!
Overrated.
I could not have said it better than Hayward Giablommi!
"they could be in serious trouble when they face the patriots."
