Brady says he's never influenced a ref

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter says that when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wants a roughing the passer call, he just has to whine to the referee to get it. Brady says Porter doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

On Thursday, Porter said on NFL Network that “When a guy can tell a ref when to throw a flag, and he gets it, he’s got his own rules.”

When asked by the Boston Globe about Porter’s suggestion that Brady can tell a ref when to throw a flag, Brady said he doesn’t buy it.

No, I don’t think so, ” Brady told the Globe. “You may get more calls.
I don’t know. I think the ref calls what he sees. I don’t think I’ve
ever influenced a call. The refs we have are very good. If they make a
call on that, great. If they don’t, that’s fine.”

According to the Globe, Patriots opponents have been flagged for roughing the passer five times this season. On a couple of those occasions, Brady appeared to motion to the referee that a flag should be thrown before a flag was thrown, though that doesn’t mean the referee wouldn’t have thrown his flag even without any encouragement.

After Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury last year on a low hit, NFL referees were instructed to call penalties on such hits. But Brady says that’s not evidence that he gets special protection.

“Rules are in place that protect the
quarterback, protect the kicker, protect defenseless receivers,
defensive linemen on cut blocks,” Brady said. “I just don’t see it as a quarterback
issue. It’s just that we’re the ones holding the ball, so it’s pretty
visible when it happens. . . . They find ways to protect receivers, and they
should. You can’t just go and knock the crap out of the kicker. We all
play by the rules. If you’re flagged, you deal with it, and find a way
to not let it happen again.”

Hey Tom you didn’t know when your dirt bag coach was stealing defensive signs?
    YA RIGHT!

That’s BS. On the play that Suggs grazed Brady’s leg, Brady turned to the ref and pointed to his knee. The ref then shook his head yes and threw the flag. What a freakin’ liar.

  3. Laxer37 says: Nov 6, 2009 11:02 PM

Not a fan or a hater. Just and observer, and the replay doesn’t lie.
The play Porter is refering to, you see Brady get hit, he turns to the ref and throws his hands up, the ref looks at Brady, pauses for a moment, and only then does he go for his flag.
Seems pretty cut and dry there was some special treatment on that play.

Ya know…. I’m not so sure that the Patriots played by the rules…. But I could be wrong.

Tell it like it is Joey. Tom is a man of few words and as you can see, Joey hit a nerve and Tom is blabbing all over himself.
See flags dropped the minute someone gives Tom a menacing look. I’m taking out my voodoo doll out and I’m sticking a needle in the knees.

  6. shawnc16 says: Nov 6, 2009 11:06 PM

They should give Brady his own flags to throw to save time.
Seriously though if it were my QB, I would be happy so I don’t see why some Patriot fans get bent out of shape by the notion of this.
It does appear as though Brady gets some calls that lesser QBs don’t get especially those questionable ones where someone accidentally landed on Brady’s shadow or somethng. I don’t think the refs are cheating I just think they are a little more aware because of who he is.

  7. Gophersnot says: Nov 6, 2009 11:08 PM

I’m sure Belicheat has something to do with it. Is the NFL trying to keep Brady safe so the Pats can run the score up on more opponents?
The Pats organization shows ZERO class and sportsmanship.

    Sorry Mr. Brady.
All one has to do is review your previous games (and how you reacted when a lineman buzz’d by your knees) and what you did the first couple of games this year.
Joey is right to a significant degree. I’ve seen the video of Mr. Brady pointing to a lineman after he ‘brushed’ by his legs (no hit). From a football standpoint, this is embarresing from a ‘front line’ player.
However, let’s get (at least) one thing straight here…….this, in it’s entirety, is about money. Lots & LOTS OF MONEY.
So much of the NFL image is to try and provide good role models for youngsters out there. What kind of statement is it if the NFL protects some QB’s one way…and others another way…because of money.
Dear readers, this is called corruption. Joey has it right on a football level, but let us not forget the corruption that has started to manifest itself on a ‘game by game’ level inside the NFL will continue until the ‘light of day’ is exposed.
If Mr. Brady can point (& direct) a rep to a foul….well then what is next? Whatever it is, it is not football as we know it.
Money is power and power corrupts.

I don’t think people really like the Pats so much anymore-first Belicheat and now this obvious plea by Brady for flags. I, too, saw the play where the player was really just pushed toward Brady and Brady immediately pointed to his knee (which I believe was untouched) and got the flag. “Boo, Brady!”

your an idiot if you think a push could result in a guy changing his postion and flying into a qb’s knee…
Linebackers practice footwork all the time they can control there movements
He clearly hit Brady’s knee witch violates the roughing the passer rule. The refs flag was delayed cause he had to watch the completion at the same time he was already grabbin the flag he just had to follow his fundamaental ref rule of seein the play out first.

Lying through his teeth. Brady admitted weeks ago that he buddies up to the refs to get favorable calls. PFT had the story.
And yes, Brady has gotten calls made for him? Who can forget earlier this season when Brady was tackled, got up, signaled to the ref, and the ref threw the flag?

Uhhh maybe you didn’t notice but this is a football website, no one else is commenting on Lebron because unless Braylon pops another one of Lebron’s friends there aren’t any articles on Lebron here, so why would anyone comment on fake fouls called on him.
You agree that fake calls happen in sports, thats what everyone is saying its just that Brady is denying it, it doesn’t matter who you root against as long as you are honest about what is going on.

  21. VoxVagina says: Nov 7, 2009 12:41 AM

Brady is still listed on the injury report with a strained vagina after he hopped around like a lunatic asking the refs to throw a flag on Suggs a few weeks ago. He’s listed as probable for this weeks game vs Miami, but Belichick doesn’t want him to reaggrivate the injury by calling for flags on Porter and the Dolphins D.

Well I can’t speak for the rest of ProFOOTBALLtalk, but when something happens to LeBron I’m usually completely and utterly not caring about basketball – and the few times I am caring about basketball, it’s certainly not because of the Cavs.
Of course, I don’t really care about Tom Brady getting to call his own shots. He already had the “Tuck Rule” as his own personal flag. This is just adding to the collection. They ought to introduce a pink flag – all Brady-related penalties that wouldn’t be thrown if the same thing happened to Brady Quinn or David Garrard.

  23. bbq says: Nov 7, 2009 1:17 AM

I’m a Chiefs fan, not a Patriots fan.. but it seems to me that there sure are a lot of people commenting here that are really jealous of the Patriots’ success and bitter that their team isn’t as good.
I’m shocked that people are still bringing up this whole “cheating” thing. Get over it. For one thing, it wasn’t even really cheating. For another thing, the Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season and broke just about every offensive record in the book AFTER all the accusations.
I’ve seen plenty of bullshit roughing the passer flags thrown for quarterbacks other than Tom Brady…
I remember seeing one thrown when a defensive player failed to tackle Ben Roethlisberger and ended up wrapping his arm around Roethlisberger’s ankle. That’s it. He didn’t even ALMOST bring him down. And this was BEFORE Bernard Pollard’s hit on Brady.
SO WHAT if Brady pleas for a flag? How often do you see receivers plea for a pass interference call or linemen point fingers on false starts?
Some of you people really just need to get off it.

  25. I didn't hear no bell. says: Nov 7, 2009 2:09 AM

Um, the play in question where Brady asks for the flag… did all of you miss the defender FLYING AT HIS KNEES? If Tom didn’t sidestep it, he would have been out for the rest of this season. The defender was going low and deserved a flag. If a defender went after your QB’s knees and he narrowly escaped a season ending injury, you’d be whistling a different tune.

  26. Brohamma says: Nov 7, 2009 2:36 AM

When are you people going to realize that ALL THE QUARTERBACKS in the NFL are being overly protected?! When?
The fact is that as a fan of a team there are other players throughout the league that you would like to see playing for YOUR team. Brady, Peyton, Fitzgerald, Moss.. the list goes on. So when these players get a flag ESPECIALLY against your favorite team… well we just can’t have that can we!?
So here’s what I would challenge you with. This Sunday try and keep in this whole discussion in mind and pay attention to the players on your favorite team; in particular, their calling for a flag. See how often they get it… defensive or offensive.
As Brady said.. “we’re (quarterbacks) the ones holding the ball, so it’s pretty visible when it happens.”
Put your hate aside and take a solid look at the game. I think you will see that the fog surrounding your perception will lift.

  28. Route36West says: Nov 7, 2009 3:21 AM

This is total BS. Does he think were stupid or something. Florio didnt you post a story after one of the questionable calls given to Brady where he said he goes up to the refs before the game and greets all of them personally and that he knows them all. So that the refs will like him and call penalties against the other team when it relates to him. If I remember correctly he also said that he does and will ask for calls even if there really wasnt a penalty because if it will help his team win he will do it.
I mean whatever you get special treatment b/c your the nfl’s 2nd favorite player(Behind Lord Farve) and get away with using that to influence the refs even when nothing happened. Thats fine it is what it is. We know how the Patriots teach to be. Do anything you possibly can to win no matter if its against the rules or not. Dont play us like idiots. I dont expect you to come and and say o ya we do all that. But dont say something weeks ago and then act like you didnt say it. The NFL and the refs might buy your lies on purpose or just b/c their dumb but dont try that with us we dont care how much money you make for the league.

to be honest, we’ve all seen wide receivers + the crowd influence pass interference penalties. It happens all over the league depending on the circumstances. This type of action by the refs has just carried over to Tom Brady. If it were your team, you’d love it. I hope Donovan McNabb at least tries it on Sunday night.

    You jealous losers.
Is it o.k. that the receivers on every team in the league beg for interference calls on almost every pass play?
Tom is a winner. Period. He isn’t asking for flags because he is afraid of getting hurt, or thinks he is above the rules. He sees a flag as 15 yards for his team. 15 yards closer to winning. He is a trained killer on the field, with 1 goal…to win. When he sees an opportunity..he takes it. Whether it is hitting Moss or Welker, or making sure that a ref saw that he was hit on the play, WHATEVER. It is a means to an an end. Tom Brady Rocks. Best Ever.

  37. promichael says: Nov 7, 2009 7:46 AM

Great job by Porter to go public with this. Now the Dolphins should have some influence and perhaps the refs will not over protect Brady. The notion that Brady lobbies for flags is news??? EVERY NFL quarterback and any other player for that matter calls for lobbies for flags. Watch how many times Joey Porter cries to a Ref that he got held on a play……you will have to go to the game though, because they won’t show it on TV, its not news worthy. If Tom Brady does it though…..it is……so idiots like you all will get all over it just like you did the Favre saga. When I watch the video of Suggs diving at Brady’s knee, I see his efforts as intentional, and believe that had he hit the knee (had Brady not side-stepped it, in other words) Brady could have been out for another season at least. Is that what real football fans want, for one of the best QBs in the history of the game to be knocked out permanently because of a cheap dive at the knees?

I am honestly embarrassed for him. I hate when you hear the analysts on TV talk about how Porter and even T.O. at times are “good for the league” for saying what they think. What they are doing is showing kids all across the country how to be a crybaby and blame anyone but yourself and your team for your lack of success. These are the same analysts that said Favre’s drama was “bad for the league” because a dude who just wanted to play football and live his life came back and is now playing at a pro-bowl level.

I hate Tom Brady, and I LOVE the Dolphins!
However, that Suggs play linked in the comments IS a penalty. I’m not saying that Brady doesn’t influence the refs, or didn’t with that call. However, that was a penalty and warranted a flag, regardless of the ref waiting till after Brady and his O-lineman called for it.
If we’re going to say for certain that Brady influences the refs we need an example of a play that isn’t a penalty, where he calls for a flag and gets one.
I hope the Fins take Brady out of the game. Starks? Wake? It’ll be up to you two with the Pats focusing on Porter and Taylor.

If the Lions ever went 11-5 they would throw a parade for them.
Pats fans embrace the hate because when your hated like this it means your freakin good and it annoys people that they won’t go away just the Yankees. Always good and always contending unlike some of these other chump teams who can only hope to compete maybe every 4 or 5 years or so.

I’ve watched that video over and over in slow motion and it sure looks to me that the ref is reaching for his flag either before or at the same time Brady is looking for a flag. Play it back in real time rather than slo-mo and it’s obvious there is no way the ref reached for the flag as a reaction to Brady asking for a flag.
Every QB looks for a roughing the passer call. And every RB looks for a facemask call, every WR looks for pass interference, every CB puts his hands up after a pass as proof he didn’t touch the WR, every DL pantomines a holding call when a flag is thrown, OL point at DL every false start, punters flop like soccer players, etc.
As for Joey Porter, what happened in Vegas speaks volumes about his character.

I cant stand ppl that HATE against Good Football:
The patriots play GREAT football, they win by outsmarting their opponents…then after Outsmarting them they turn around and OUTSMART them again.
By far the best QB of his time is Tom Brady, he has Earned the Respect of the NFL. Everyone complains in one way or another, but when the Greatest QB of all time (Tom Brady) does it you HATERS want to cry about it.
Even Michael Jordan complained about a few calls, so stop whining because brady whoops your teams “week in and week out”.
Im not sure if you guys noticed, but Bradys has… 65 TD’s and 12 Int’s in his last 23 regular season games,
THATS RIDICULOUS!!!!!! if you cant appreciate Those stats then your a HATER,
Bet you cant name a player with stats similar to that

    Preach it, Brother Porter!
Joey is 110% correct. The idiots that are getting bent out of shape over it are Pats fans, who keep telling everyone else that they’re getting bent out of shape over something that isn’t happening. It IS happening! Video doesn’t lie, Pats fans. Brady should be given his own damn flags to throw to save the refs the trouble

Oh a Patriot story! Let’s see cheaters, liars, whimps.
I can only hope that Porter gets his tomorrow from Seabass Vollmer…. (He’s German so can the N word can’t be far behind?) Natzi
Tom made a short, consise and cogent argument visa vee the Refs.
I have never seen a WR complain he was interfered with and that’s why he dropped the ball, have you???
A RB gets facemasked, they never ask for the flag…. Never saw a kicker fake getting ran into….
Never seen Porter ask for a holding call…
Horse collared WR never asks for a flag….
If it makes you feel better about your stinky team, go ahead with the cheating nonsense…It provides you comfort when your team is Golfing during the play offs…..Like John Lennon said, whatever gets you through the night…..

Pats fans embrace the hate because when your hated like this it means your freakin good and it annoys people that they won’t go away just the Yankees. Always good and always contending unlike some of these other chump teams who can only hope to compete maybe every 4 or 5 years or so.

I present to the court exhibit A) The classic bandwagon fan. You see, your honor, this man likes a Boston football team – and he then turns around and compares them to the YANKEES. A real Boston fan would throw up in his mouth to compare his team with the Yankees, so we must conclude that this guy is another bandwagon-jumping win-at-all-costs ass. Like about 2/3 of Patriot Nation.

Was porter a raven player? He sure whines like a raven player. I’m sure Brady is protective of his knee. Its easy to jump on the bandwagon and criticize someone who is successful. People have always been critical of him. Well, get over it! He’s HOT, he’s awesome and your NOT! The rules are the rules. You can’t go for the knees. And that should be a rule. Its a horrible injury to experience. I deal with them everyday and people not only have to physical get over the injury but the pyschological part of it also. And the ravens were getting desperate like they always do and start making cheap shots. Just like lewis did on bengals ochocinco. So just face it. Brady is gonna beat you down!
