Packers' Jolly fined $5,000

Packers defensive tackle Johnny Jolly committed one of the bonehead plays of the year on Sunday when he head-butted Vikings running back Chester Taylor, nullifying a third-down stop deep in Green Bay territory and giving Minnesota first-and-goal, essentially handing the Vikings four free points when they scored after the penalty.

Today Jolly was slapped with a $5,000 fine for his actions.

Jolly was one of three Packers defenders who were fined $5,000; his teammates Al Harris and B.J. Raji also found out they'll be $5,000 lighter in their next paychecks. Harris was fined for grabbing a helmet opening and Raji for a facemask.

Other players fined $5,000 by the NFL this week for actions in Sunday's games included Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett for a helmet-to-helmet hit, Panthers tight end Jeff King for a late hit and Colts linebacker Clint Session for roughing the passer.

What would be a good name for this game when it come out on NFL Films?

    I’m thinking,

    The Lambasting at Lambeau.

    The Trouncing on the Tundra.

    The Smackdown in Titletown.

Packers have to be the dirties players of them all. I was wondering if they would get Harris for that. He does that regularly and they need to start hammering him for that or somebody is going to break their neck.
I had to come to a WackPacker thread to try to find my friend Bob Nelson. I don't seem him around much after the Pack got spanked by the Vikings 2x. Same with Jimmy. Where are you guys?? No fun when the pack sucks, nobody to talk sh!t with!!!

About damn time they get slapped with fines for cheating. Harris always grabs a facemask and never gets penalized or fined for it. Good to see they finally got what they had coming to them, its been long over due.

  8. 2brauneyz says: November 6, 2009 7:20 PM

The inconsistency of these fines is killing me! Couple years ago Urlacher gets whacked $100K, for non-issued headgear, but Jolly, viciously and with premeditation, gets away with his cheap shot for only $5K. Can we say "amazing"?

... well, maybe disgusting is more the right word.

awaiting the comment from bob nelson somehow blaming this on the vikings and "non-christians"

While I agree with Jolly getting a fine, the others (especially Dockett's) are laughable. Goodell is destroying the game with this stupidity..

  11. EasyDrinkingBuschLight says: November 6, 2009 7:53 PM

What a jackass. Blatantly headbutts a guy after a play and costs his team a touchdown for the opposition, and has absolutely no regret about it. Speaks volume to the character of Packer nation that this guy is one of the central characters of their team.

And you gotta love when Jolly's jersey comes untucked on play 2 of every game, and he prances around the rest of the time like he's in a pretty little green dress.

Jolly fined pocket change for a move that could have ended a players season.

More news on how stupid TT and MM are after these commercials.

    ---------------
Viking Homer comment, obviously! Harris ALWAYS gets called for it, especially when they used to play press coverage and his hand checks would slide up into the facemask. The average fan likes to think he's mugging receivers when he's kicking their butt at the line of scrimmage, but they forget that it's legal for the first 5 yards. This year he got called for pass interference when replay clearly showed it was 4 yds passed the line of scrimmage, but the receiver lined up 1 yd behind it, so he gets penalized even when he shouldn't.

  14. erikleif says: November 6, 2009 9:39 PM

harris is a cheap s.o.b - he tried to rip berrians head off after he crossed the stripe - hit ap on the knee last year - guys like him are the reason for fines - would love to see someone take him out

    "Trolltoll says: November 6, 2009 8:11 PM

I wholeheartedly agree with the fine and the stated idiocy of Jolly's actions, but that a simple forehead-to-forehead, helmeted head butt that did not catch Taylor unawares could have "ended a player's season?" C'mon - Taylor can't be that much of a rubberneck.

All that aside, the Pack has been pulling that undisciplined crap the entirety of McCarthy's tenure. How many times have they been top 5 or better in penalties? How many first downs have they given up on penalties? The team needs to get into paychecks or enforce some harsher methods of correction. Whatever the hell they're doing (or not doing) isn't working. Those I've coached would be bear-crawling on the rock-hard Texas caliche in the 100-degree heat until they puked for suckhead s*** like that.

  16. DocBG says: November 6, 2009 9:57 PM

the game is what it is and getting hit is probably the biggest part of the game (there's a reason they don't wear flags at the pro level, at least not yet)

that said, jolly was a cheap shot and was dealt with fairly, personally I don't care about the fine so much as the yards from the penalty, thank you very much. It reflects poor discipline and coaching to have an outburst like that, so no suprise there.

as for Harris, the guy should honestly sit a game for crap like that and lose a game check to say the least. Jolly's was something that was a burst of anger and stupid, harris's was something clearly meant to injure another player. It was a late, unneccesary hit, meant to jar the guys neck and was absolutely disgraceful. stuff like that should be dealt with incredibly harshly, and I'm of the opinion that the guy should sit at least a game, possibly a year, without question for crap like that.

Before you packer lemmings accuse me of being a homer, if i ever see a viking player going way the hell overboard like that against another player, I'll be the first to complain about it. If allen ever picks up a guy off the ground and tries to snap his neck, let me know, ill happily join you in condemning it, but I dont see stuff like that happening because if nothing else, chilly has instilled a little class into the vikings players, something that cannot be said for some of the packers.

  17. Adept says: November 6, 2009 10:03 PM

    @whatthehellisgoingonoutthere

Harris wasn't flagged on the play in question (the one he received the fine for).

  18. Twiz says: November 6, 2009 10:21 PM

I'm a Vikes fan, but I gotta say, this fine crap is getting ridiculous! If a player gets flagged on a play, let that be the end of it (although half the flags getting thrown are bogus also)! We are getting closer and closer to flag football!

does that mean that fans of 31 non-champion teams throughout the season aren't supposed to get excited about how their team plays? if that's the way you feel it musta been tough being a packer fan lately.

football is to only be enjoyed if your team goes all the way right? othwerwise keep your head down and don't say anything?

you're an idiot...and you take this sport way too seriously

Now is the time for you stupid Viking fan to switch on the intelligence because that happened two years ago but apparently you were too busy whining and crying about Peterson getting hurt. Dude, it's football. Get over it.

"About damn time they get slapped with fines for cheating."

and like no Vikings players cheat. Last time I checked, Kevin and Fatty Patty were in court for taking some sort of stimulant that masks steroids. And don't start whining about how the NFL didn't tell them and crap like that because that doesn't change the fact that they still took those stimulants.

As for the rest of you delusional Viking fans, Johnny Jolly is actually a very good player. Another gem found in the late rounds of the draft by Thompson (drafted in the 6th round)

  27. Youngs79 says: November 7, 2009 9:11 AM

I wouldn't expect anything less from the Packers. A team with little talent and no discipline, this is what happens. They are chippy because they are tired of getting their ass kicked by the Vikings this year. This is why they are one of the most penalized teams in the NFL. McCarthy is losing control of the team and they won't win anything as long as he and Ted Thompson are allowed to keep their jobs.

  28. mixman34 says: November 7, 2009 9:47 AM

Guess what idiots, history does matter, whether you accept it or not. If your team HAD a history, you'd understand that too.

Congrats on tearing it up for one half of a season though. You guys have been playing solid ball. Now, all you have to do is just win one game in February, and then you'll start to embrace history as well, instead of ignoring it.

    Good luck.

Jolly's headbutt says NOTHING about Packer nation you freakin idiot. The fans didn't go down there & headbut him. BTW, since Jolly ended up on the ground why was ther not a 2nd flag?

$5,000.00 fine is nothing--McCarthey should have benched his ass and try to start instilling a little discipline in a team that is penalized way to many times.

As I have said before, like all fan bases there are sone good ones & then there are some just pure idiots. Aren't you guys glad to have that "Fudge packer" that may actually get you deep into th eplayoffs. Not a bad Fudge packer kicker either. Hell, thay had to get traindfed somewhere-certainly wouldn;t have happened in MN.

It's all well and good that you're proud of them, you should be. But, what is sickening and immature is to use that for an arguement as to why they suck, why the Vikes swept them and are the better team.
Vike fan- Vikes are 7-1 and beat you twice.
Pack fan - so what we won 3 super bowls
    VF when?
    pf - 13, 41 and 42 years ago!
VF so, what's that have to do with the current teams?
    PF oh quit whining!!

It's an asinine arguement and you know it.
Yes the Pack has 3 and the Vikes have none.

But for you to say the Vikes have no history is ludicrous. They have had some very good teams through the years and have just come up short.

I thought you were a better fan than that and it just goes to show what happens when the Vikes have a more dominant team. Packer fans true colors just bleed right through.

I hate the packers, but I respect what they have done as a franchise, I expected that you could show the same respect. I was wrong.

rulz: I guess it's down to you as a packer fan that I can actually have a decent conversation with on here.

  34. TheBaySay says: November 7, 2009 4:37 PM

Vice fans calling Pack players the dirtiest in the league? Hilarious. Go back to your game vs. the Rams. Hicks ends the season of a Rams DL by shoving him from behind. Another Vice - Fat Williams iirc - nearly twists a Rams QB's head off by hooking his helmet as he goes past him. Were there a lot of Packers on that SI list of dirtiest players? Most of the Pack penalties have been for stuff like false starts or holding. Oooo - dirty! I know you lavender lovers don't have much to do this week, but please - try to stay somewhere within the rationality ballpark, mmkay?

All fan bases have "asshats" (nice word BTW). Beer Cheese & Super are great fans--just have opposing views of coaching--gotta say I'm starting to lean towards Beer's way of thinking. There's just not much there to hang on TT's cap. If Rodgers stays alive I think 2010 will be TT's waterloo (or breakthrough) if he makes it through 2009.

Can't speak for Beer but I think he was addressing his comments to some of the "asshat" posters here today--don't think I have to name any names--they're pretty obvious.

I do agree with Beer & Twiz about one thing--this fine shit is ridiculous. Flag 'em, penalize the team but why all the fines all of a sudden?

    ____________________________________

    I think you misunderstand.

OF COURSE the Vikings are the better team this year, they proved that. Twice in fact. I wouldn't go so far as to say the Packers absolutely suck though. They're not anywhere near Lions or Browns level for instance, but it's still obvious they're not going anywhere even IF they make the postseason.

Which brings me to my point. History is all we have left at the moment. You saw we just got clowned, on national TV, by our own former players. We can't exactly brag about that; we can't talk about how overrated and terrible we think the Vikings are anymore, they obviously aren't; we can't talk about playoffs; we can't even convincingly hate on Childress' idiocy anymore when Thompson is still our GM!

This is clearly not our year. The division's already locked up by a hated rival and the season's only half over. It's not easy to be a Pack fan right now. The only comfort we can take, the ONLY argument we have left, is your lack of championships (and even that may be changing shortly). Can you blame us for using it?

A fan has to have something to be proud of. I'm sure you can understand that.
