Pats release Kendall Simmons

The New England Patriots have pulled the plug on the Kendall Simmons experiment.

The team has announced that Simmons has been released.

Simmons, a first-round pick of the Steelers in 2002, became an unrestricted free agent in late February after spending seven seasons in Pittsburgh.

He appeared in only one game with the Patriots, on special teams.

Simmons started every game of the Steelers’ 2005 Super Bowl-winning season. Last year, he ruptured an Achilles’ tendon during the fourth game of the regular season, and he missed the rest of the year.

Since the trade deadline has passed, Simmons will be required to pass through waivers. If/when he clears waivers, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
